Title: Nic-es sculpting log. PAGE 6.WATCH THIS SPACE.
Post by: nic-e on December 04, 2017, 12:30:48 AM
At the title says basically.I wanted some generic non period specific spearmen/warriors in 15mm but wasn't happy with the selection i found online. Not that they were all bad, I just couldn't find what i was after. So i knocked this guy out this evening and I plan to use him as a template to sculpt up a few more troops.
He isn't finished, The back of his head is still flat and he needs a helmet/hair. Other than that he's good to go. (Also alot smaller than my usual 15mm.Closer to ral partha scale.)

Really lovely job - it's a period I'd love to do some skirmishes in for 15mm but agree, not a whole load of choice - at least not until Totentanz rerelease the Corvus Belli HYW range. This is great though - sculpt 30 or so other poses including villagers then release them? Please??

I looked for ages in hope of finding some of the Corvus belli HYW stuff to no avail.
There's plenty around, Kurasan has some food stuff, But not what i was after.

I can't say much now but this MAY see a mould at some point.

in the mean time, I've started a second sculpt.
Another spearman ,this time with shield raised, pushing forward.

A side note, trying to get a picture of a 15mm scale face on my phone makes you look very hard at your finger nails....

Second sculpt is done!
He's come out pretty good, I'm fairly proud of his clothing and facial expression.
Here he is with his comrade in arms and a perry knight for scale (Or to represent dark souls.)

Hands and spear of the second soldier are removable for casting, So if he was cast you could replace his weapons with a sword and shield/lantern and bill, bow  ect ect ect.

A small (hahah!) project.
I got a couple of sprues of travel battle figures with the intent of converting them to medival/fantasy humans.
here's the first test for a knight, mounted man at arms and basic infantry.

They're very small , but if you do want some nice human figures to sculpt on top of they're great!

Yup, but this works out cheaper and gives me something to do sculpting wise. Plus i always think 6mm is just a little TOO small, things end up looking quite squat or barely visible. These figures have nice proportions that i can destroy with oversized shields.

Fair enough!

These figures do have very nice proportions (not surprising from the Perry's). I have no idea how you work with green stuff on such a small scale.

The smaller you o the easier i gets because you can abandon certain details. Here I'm just putting on flat shapes or rounding out/covering small areas.
In 15mm I can relax with drapery and fabric since it isn't as visible as it would be on a 28mm figure.

I painted the converted banner knight last night.
I may add more to the banners in future but i'm pretty happy with him as a test figure.
One point about converting these figures. I haven't done anything to the knight himself except added the greenstuff helmet. The rest is just his body painted silver. That's a nice little feature of this scale, you can get away with alot of suggestion.

Agreed, I wish i liked napoleonics enough to enjoy the game itself. If they did an agincourt version I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

It's certainly smaller than the figures, Closer to 3mm I think, But I don't think it really has a consistent scale.

I started a new sculpt tonight. 4 hours in and I hve this. HE's lacking forearms ,a head and a weapon, but I'm fairly happy with him so far. I wanted something more dynamic than the last two spearmen so this chap is going to be running forward , sword in front of him ,shield held in his off hand.

Cheers chaps!

Not done yet, Tonight was D&D so I had to stop making toy soldiers to play with...toy soldiers.
HE's got his soon to be sword and shield (without detailing) in place. I'm worried his sword hand is WAY too big and may trim it down when i have him all together. If his hair makes his head bigger it may balance it out and not be too bad.
I'm pretty happy with his pose, like he's running forward, shielding himself from arrows as he charges into the enemy or makes a desperate dash for cover.

(p.s. Forgive the low quality pics, my phone HATES taking pictures of small stuff , especially stuff that's completely green and shiny.)

Cheers. I don't , I generally just try and keep the figure in proportion with itself, or at least looking like it is. I do alot of life drawing so that helps.

Very kind, thankyou. I am pretty happy with him.

I decided to do something new and make a small youtube 360 video of the sculpt. Because of his pose there's no good angle to get a picture from. He's done now, i decided to sand down the wire forming his sword base rather than sculpt onto it, so i could keep his sword relatively slim and realistic looking.

I have this guys body all done but I wanted to get feedback on his face. Does it look monstery enough for people? I know i want a pointy goblineque nose, but what do you lot think?

Also yeah.....I need a camera if I'm gonna keep doing this, because trying to get anything near a clear photo of this face with my phone was a nightmare.

I never though of sculpting faces that way. I might give it a go for some practice. I've been wanting to do some more sculpting but have been lacking enthusiasm.
Title: Re: Nic-es sculpting log.Is it orc time?

more progress on the orc.
He's got a hunched back and will have a smoother, flatter transition from his head to his neck once the joint is dry enough to work over.

I'm going to give him skinny,, lanky arms and legs to counter his quie squat body, to give him a really unpleasant inhuman look.

He'll most likely be holding a spear or rusty halberd across his front.

Orc looks great - he's got a real feel of the the old 15mm HOT goblins, which is a good thing.

How easy are the faces to remove from the surface when you sculpt like that? Very sharp scalpel?

Generally a light nudge gets them free. As long as you sculpt them onto something smooth like acrylic or an enamel tile, the greenstuff won't adhere too strongly.

Well i decided my phone has probably had enough of being strained to breaking point trying to photograph miniatures, SOOOO i picked up a little camera.
Turns out it hates it aswell. Nothing makes you miss having free access to a professional photography studio like trying to take pictures of things this small with a lamp and a strip of leds.

The orc is now done. I'm really not thrilled with alot of it, i think there are too many sloppy parts that show up badly on camera and his weapon and pose really don't stand out as anything special.
But he's done, and i like his face.

A cheap camera won't be much better than your phone for macro work. There are several brands of clip-on macro lenses for phone cameras. Maybe that would work better for you?

I did this chap today.I had to work Saturday so didn't get my two days of sculpting/slouching around, So I managed to crank this guy out in about 3 hours today.

I'm thinking of giving him a big flowing hood for him to scowl from.

He's a mm or two shorter than the other chaps , mostly because of his stooped over position, like his back has been arched by years of pouring over arcane scrolls.

I have just cut the wizards feet off to give himn an extra mm of height. He was actually a perfect 15mm to the eye but he's smaller than EVERY 15mm miniature i own, so i decided to give him a little more height.

I also sculpted a hood ono him but hated it, so i did a quick image search for the sort of headwear that felt right, and i decided he would be an excellent alchemist. after a few seconds i realised that the go to hat for all good alchemists , pyromancers and dealers of pigshit it....

Hi all

Please Ockman can you explain why 15 mm is supposed to be from foot to eye ?
I've seen it a lot on forums and websites but it seems weird to me. Where does it come from and what's the rational behind it ?
I don't know but for me the logical way should be from foot to top of the head (without hat), when I want to get the height of
my kids, I don't measure foot to eye but if there is a good reason ...

Of course there are different traditions, but a rational I've seen is that one might not see the top of a minis head (due to helmets/gear), but the eyes are more often seen. 15mm scale is often refered to as 1:100, which also makes the case for minis being closer to 17-18mm rather than 15mm, also.
Since most 15mm models are closer to 18mm (foot to top of the head), the ones closer to 15mm look rather small.

Ok, thank you. Mine are and will be 1:100 scale so I was wondering why.

Interesting side note, my original ventures into 15mm sculpting used 1:100 figures as armatures. Because of this they have almost no facial definition and are pretty basic. 1:100 is much finer because it obeys proper rules of scale rather that just trying to give a stylised impression of a figure. A 15mm figure and a 1:100 figure may be the same height, but one is going to be bigger than the other.

Its also the reason my early sculpts didn't survive vulcanisation! They came out as green and white blobs of melted plastic.

Do you ever just have a bad hobby day?  lol
I went to start sculpting the other day, got most of a figure done, but when i was doing the mail coat i found a lump of hard unkneadable yellow in my greenstuff. I had to cut it out,and it took most of the torso with it, When i removed the putty to redo it it turned out it was full of gritty old lumps.
I cleared it out, tried again, and the armature snapped off it's base. I took the putty, put it on another armature so i could at least use it to build up some forms, and that one snapped in half! In the end i just made about 10 shields out of it ,But my god what an infuriating evening that was!

On the bright side, I've fully costed up the kickstarter idea and you know what, I'm bloody well going for it. I won't promise alot right now, But expect one or two pledge levels, a core pledge of ten character figures and MAYBE some stretch goals if it gets that far. :)

I have also just received word that the two spearmen from the start of this thread have been cast successfully and so should be receiving some of them myself in the near future!

Some WIP shots from tonight. I decided to counter the bad luck i had the other day by getting three sculpts started at once.
From left to right we have a barbarian fighter, A knight in plate armour, and a warrior in scale mail.
I'm pretty happy with the anatomy on the barbarian. He'll probably have a loin cloth and maybe some fur lined boots, but other than that I'm going classic conan comics with his sculpt.

I'd also forgotten how different in consistency fresh greenstuff is to old greenstuff. The stuff I've been sculpting with up until now is at least 10 years old!

Incidentally, My fingers are cramped as hell right now!

So thats good news for your 15mm sculpting but bad news for your cut off airships? :)

Slightly off topic: You can buy clear plastic rod as thin as 2mm diameter and cut it in appropriate lenghts.

Weirdly enough, about a day after my order from warlord arrived I received an email from element saying my flying bases were enroute! Clearly the hex base embargo has been lifted, so I look forward to getting them based and painted

The first casts have turned up! These are the two spearmen from the first page of this thread, soon to be avaliable from alternative.

They've cast up really nice and clean, fa r better than i had hoped! It's quite odd sending off a lump of greenstuff and getting a bag of pewter in return.

Congratulations!

It feels kind of like you have produced offspring!! Must be cool to see something you created by hand, now being produced in volume.

The figures look good.

It is indeed, These are my pewter children, and with them i shall conquer the lands of men.

Honestly the strangest feeling is that someone else cast them after i spent three years learning to cast and working as an art technician. Admittedly these aren't bronze so it's a little different, but still Having someone else do all the mould prep and work for me is pretty nice ;D

So far everything is 15mm :)

Cheers for the encouragement everyone!

right, so following on from that, I'm still looking at the kickstarter idea.

This isn't an announcement, so much as a watch this space.

Most likely in the next couple of months, only two pledges.
One for a pack of ten 15mm characters,
One for a pack plus a custom sculpt of your own design.

I'm hopefully looking at end of feb, but maybe beginning of march. When i have a more concrete idea of what's happening with it, I'll add it here and create a new post just for kickstarter news and updates.
I want to keep is short, simple and managable, so anyone that is kind enough to back is rewarded with their figures as quickly as possible! :)

In the mean time, Here's a rough mock up of some banner artwork so you can literally watch this space....

(the font is a placeholder.I'll be doing it all by hand but typography and a 9 hour shift don't mix.)

On the sculpting side, The I have finished my harry the hammer tribute sculpt and have almost finished a more noble armoured knight.
I'll have pics of those in the next couple of days, and then after that i want to add a skeleton, a warrior queen and a dwarf to round out the ten sculpts.

More sculpts.

Here's the finished harry the hammer tribute, Barry the basher.

And two more WIPs.
A skeleton that may be armed with a big sword and shield, or a crossbow.

And a knight lunging with his sword.

These are fantastic -  I feel like 'Oldhammer' is really underrepresented in 15mm, and these'll help solve that! Can't wait for the kickstarter...

Expect more soon! :)

I promised more soon!

I sat down and got this skeleton chap done last night. HE was fiddly but I'm quite happy with him, especially the way he's peering out from under his rusty helm and mail.
