Obyekt 279 - ill advised in so many ways:
A heavy amphibious breakthrough tank which can withstand a nuclear shockwave...
Looking forward to this one! Fingers crossed that it becomes the master for a kit.
I'm tempted to make the obvious riposte to Obyekt 279 myself, just not sure if I have enough time before I head OS.
-
Looking forward to seeing it :)
-
I want one!
I had to look that one up, I'll admit. Looking forward to seeing this.
-
I'll admit, the only reason I'd ever heard of them was because of Metal Gear Solid 3. It's a truly obscure bit of hardware. And yes, crazy in more ways than one. Looking forward to seeing the scratchbuild.
-
Thanks all! Got a load of other stuff to do too...
-
A quick trip to Wikipedia later, I'm excited to see this 4 tread computer mouse take shape! lol
-
Apt description lol
It' going to be a bloody nightmare! Hardly a straight line in it!
-
Can I start yet? SWMBO want me to rip out a bathroom... I want to build tanks!
-
Can I start yet? SWMBO want me to rip out a bathroom... I want to build tanks!
Well I've been hanging wall lights, so no! :D (but I sympathise)
-
Argh...
Now going to be out on Business at least Sun-Mon-Tue! I want to start work! :-X

Argh...
Now going to be out on Business at least Sun-Mon-Tue! I want to start work! :-X
Well, if you start but don't post pics, the coordinator won't notice, will he? ;)
-
Just googled it, :o :o
You’ll have fun building that :D :D :D
-
Oh! That’s going to be a challenge! :o......not for you I’m sure! ;)
-
lol
thanks chaps
-
Progress has been made....
Pics will follow...
What a completely ill advised project... there isn't a straight line in it and it's covered in double curves!!
-
Egg box construction allows me to control the final shape. A bit anyway. Its really hard to get the lines right as there isn't any way to measure bits! So its best guesses!
-
I dont envy you building this one, very fiddly.
A great start, though.
8) 8)
-
Little bit more then away until Tuesday
I was going to make the sides removable (they fold down for transit) but I realised the side plates I'd built were wonky... fixed sodes it is! Thin plasticard now covers the egg box structure. Most of the rest will be packed out with scrap and fillered! The thin plasticard will just about do a double curve if forced... this plastic magic glue is a bit odd, slower to grab but faster to set than tamiya and revell contacta.
-
I agree with respectable colleague.....great start though!
Is that plans just out of shot? Did you find blueprints anywhere? Or is that just a mock-up you’ve printed out from the computer to cut out the tracks and wheels?
-
Thanks I just use google image search for object 279 drawing most of the time. The-blueprints.com is my usual favourite source.
-
Ok, that IS an impressive start. :o :o 8) 8)
For the record, I am designing my transporter with VERY straight edges and flat sides - I guess that makes your choice more ill-advised than mine. ;D
-
Looking good! The hull looks like a bugger but I'm intrigued as to what you will do with the turret.
-
I like your "egg carton" technique. My first impulse would be to carve the compound curves out of wood but your method is very systematic.
-
What a start!
-
Thanks!

So am I :o
Probably end up cutting and stacking plasticard rings and filler over the top.
I like your "egg carton" technique. My first impulse would be to carve the compound curves out of wood but your method is very systematic.
It allows me to set the shapes I can measure and the plasticard curve extrapolates the curves. It wont be perfdct but it'll be close enough! Problem I'd have with wood is symmetry.
-
The next step will be the underside and turret ring. Then loads of filler...
-
You mad bugger!
-
I'll take that as a compliment ;)
First round of hull filler last night. Needs a good filing/snading and another round of filler no doubt.
Next will be Turret ring and more filler, then on to the tracks... the tracks are going to be interesting.
I need to make them sturdy enough and removable for casting. The tracks are surprisingly flimsey looking for such a large beast but seeing as there are twice as mnay as are usually needed it shouldn't be a surprise! This thing is also pretty tall as a result and the hull is over the tracks as a result.
I've ordered some of Archer's 'Weld line' Decals for the upper hull so I can add the weld lines, I figured I could make them fomr other stuff but I do like a nice 3d decal...
Turret will be 'even more fun' as it's not even hemishperical!
-
Very impressive!
-
Filler, filler and more filler...
-
Looks great! nice precise work
-
Filler hides a multitude of sins... ;)
Tracks next.... but another day....
-
That’s a cracking shape! It screams “big sci fi tank” to me. What are your plans for painting this when it’s done? Is there a particular camo your going for?
-
Kubinka has the prototype in 3 colour camo.
That or Russian green... lol (my painting is passable at best!)
Got to keep it light as it'll be cast eventually so no heavy weathering.
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/de/Object_279_in_the_Kubinka_Tank_Museum_pic4.jpg/1200px-Object_279_in_the_Kubinka_Tank_Museum_pic4.jpg)
-
Actually it would make a nice hover tank right now if I added a turret!
-
Maybe some VTOL thrusters either side too? ;)
-
Track struts started. Also is it wrong to get excited about decals? Archer 3d weld beads
-
Looking good.
I've never seen those weld bead decals before. That looks handy.
-
Yours looks to be in better shape than the original! lol
-
Slow progress...
-
Nice sanding.
Another one with the patience of a saint, I see.
8) 8)
-
That’s some great lines on that! 8)
-
Its cold in the garage so not started on the tracks yet. Working on the back deck and hull details
-
BTW the best ref pics I've found are here:
http://serkoff.narod.ru/photoalbum110.html
The whole back end will be covered by what looks like an extended range fuel tank (An ill advised shape in itself!)
-
this is looking rather splendid
-
Very nice work Rich!
-
Thanks.
I'm struggling with the sides. The ribby bits are really subtle more like dents than deliberate! Might have to leave them off :(
-
Thanks.

They might look more like casting imperfections than actual details yeah.
-
This is looking great
-
Superb work there. I'm feeling rather ashamed of the straight lines on my small build. :o
-
I long for a straight line...
-

That looks superb.
Tony
-
Just incredible!
I'm glad I'm aiming for wonky on my build rather than accurate straight lines, I've nowhere near the patience for that 😣
-

Would you say the tank has an extended rear? ;D
-
lol A fat arse? ;D
Added the weld lines to the front. I'm going to ignore the other lines as I assume they aren't really supposed to be seen.
Hopefully tomorrow I can escape form the domestic duties (moving a radiator int he bathroom...) to get the lasering started. I need some bits for the fat arse and transmission. Then I can start on the track units. I'm ignoring the turret for now... ???
-
Weld lines. They took AAAAAGGES to get even approximately symmetrical.... :? Not sure if I can bear to do the underside welds...
(Probably will )
-
I’ve never tried those decals before. How do they stick on? The same as normal decals? Just with water?
-
That's really looking good! Makes me want to build another tank!
-
:-* This is super impressive work.
-

Yep, the glue is very light so they come off the backing very quickly but take ages to stick.
Got to be very careful handling the model as even after half an hour or more they still move around!
They need softening with microsol or similar to go round tight corners.
Once set they are very robust. I've used a lot of their rivets but they aren't cheap!
-
This may have been commented on earlier, but have you seen this YOU TUBE article?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRbVCPTni9Y
Tony
-
That vid is a good spot - thanks!
Lots of good footage of odd angles which is always good!
Hopefully some more progress can be made tomorrow... Next up either tracks if I can get into the garage or the turret....
-
A very impressive work.
-
I'm hoping to make some progress next week... but I've got 1000 tiles turning up on monday :(
I need to make a start on the tracks they will take some time, the challenge being make them detailed yet strong enpough for casting
They will be seperate so Jeff can cast them up easier but that does somewhat complicate the build.
The turret is the shape of nightmares...
-
Bit of spare time so on with the horrific turret...
Its not even symmetrical...
Basically I make the underlying structure picking up what lines I can. Pack the space with scrap and miliput the gaps...
-
Come visit the UK. It gets to 35 degrees once per decade if we are lucky lol
-
Serious modelling skills with that turret! :o
-
The hull and the turret are looking awesome
-
The hull and the turret are looking awesome
Indeed.
Very smooth.
8) 8)
-
lol
I really need to make some progress on it... but been tiling all day and now full of beers...
But the tiling is nearly done! Hopefully tomorrow... :?
-
Managed a couple of hungover hours this morning.
-
Oh and the tiling should be finished today. yay.
-
The turret is looking the biz mate! 8).....The tiling not so much. In my picture it’s at 90 degrees! I’d check your spirit level! ;)
-
I wondered why the tiling was taking so long...
-
I really like it. Have you thought about making a mould and go into mass production for this tank?
-
I make masters for Die Waffenkammer so I'll probably send it to him for casting eventually
-
I appear to have lost most of my finger tips to abrasion...
I've remade the gun as it was a bit droopy...And I still hate making muzzle brakes...
I'm hoping to get some time this week to get the tracks started.
-
Turret looks real nice Rich. That muzzle break looks a beast though - I built JTFM's SU152 and struggled with that muzzle break as well. May I suggest turning a piece of styrene in a cordless drill.
John
-
Cool! :D
I've started on it but I suspect it'll take a few goes! I might end up laser cutting a few bits.
That ISU-152 muzzle brake looks like "fun" o_o
-
(http://serkoff.narod.ru/279-k031.jpg)
-
I'm wondering if I use a hacksaw blade against a styrene tube in a drill will work.
-
That sounds like a good way to lose a finger, but it might work. If you have access to a lathe or a lathe like setup, where the styrene tube is secured at both ends, that might make things a bit safer.
*Edit* Given the theme its actually the perfect way to proceed :p */edit*
-
Printer resolution isnt good enough but I might try anyway.
-
I'll have a look
-
OK... due to stuff... (Mostly a bathroom refurb and work) there has been no progress...
but all is not lost... yet!
I've managed to get he CAD work done for the tracks...
Just need to Cut them and assemble them...
Only 4 sets of tracks.. probably 250 parts.... :o
Plan is Friday... but I've a leaving do to go to... so Saturday... afternoon... lol
-
You can do it!!! lol
-
Progress...
-
:?
I'm trying to upload pics like I have in the past but I get this failure:
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.
So...
I've got the undercarriage and track CAD work done and the first set of tracks cut.
Started to assemble too....pics once I figure out how to post pics again...
-
There seems to be a problem, am trying to see what's up.
-
Thanks!
OK so I built the first set of tracks... mostly... and scrapped it all... This is why it's ill advised!
I decided that it wasn't right so I had to add a layer into the roadwheels...
Mostly remade now... but got to go drink copious amounts of beer and Chinese food.
Hopefully can finish tomorrow.... :o
-
Rich - take it easy. :D
Due to the image upload problems currently on I decided to extend the deadline by a week, so take a deep breath before continuing.
-
Lucky for me!
Tracks are done... They have come out pretty well. Very tedious....!
Left to do is the turret top detail and the muzzle brake, but I am tempted to do the other model without the muzzle brake!
-
Got some good progress.
Main construction is completed and undercoated again. Just two searchlights and the hatch detail plus some handrails.
Even managed to make a reasonable muzzle brake...!
Loads of pics to upload once we are back online :)
-

1/56 Sherman (Warlord) Crab (working ;) ) for scale.
-
that is amazing
It is indeed! Smaller than I imagined it to be as well.
-
I think the problem is railway loading gauge.
The sides fold down above the tracks to reduce the width.
Its a similar size to a KV hull.
-
Need to make the searchlights and brackets next. Barrel lock and more turret details and the odd rails around the turret ring.
-
Really nice work!
-
Cracking work Rich! :o How well do the turret details stick to the primer?
-
Thanks all
Generally they stick fine, but most of them are mounted in holes drilled into the turret filler!
-
Build very near complete and only 3 days late...
Pics to follow...
-
OK standby for broadcast....
This is a taste of the CAD work
Tracks in ones and sections. You can see there are 3 sets of drawings per track.
Right most is engrave, middle is hole cut, leftmost is the outline cut.

Paint is underway... going to try enamel wash for the first time... Might go horribly wrong!
-
First go seems OK... pics taken of the WIP but saved for later!
-
Well I'm going to quit while I'm ahead!
The enamel has worked very well and I'm impressed! It's a prototype so no wear or weathering needed (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) I'm going to try and pose it and take a decent piccy for the competition tomorrow!
-
Another cracking build Rich. 8)
Always an avid reader of your build threads in the BSC or elsewhere
-
Thanks!
The more I practice the luckier I get! lol
-
Painted pic received safely, and it's another beaut. :o 8)
-
Good to hear :D
-
I have to say it has turned into one of my favourites.
I think it looks ace, so weird and futuristic.
Be sad to see it go to casting... not that I have a use for it!
That said I doubt I'll be winning anything this time around the competition is (as usual!) out of this world! :-*
-
Have you never thought of building any sci fi stuff Rich? I tend to find a lot of the vehicles available out there lack realism. With your details you build your tanks, anything you come up with I imagine would be great!
-
Simply incredible stuff, I can't wait to see it painted
-
Thanks Chaps!
It's pretty boring paint job - just green - but it is appropriate to the era!
I've done Sci-Fi stuff in the past, I used to make a lot of Ork 40k stuff. I like to make things practical and believable. I had a lungburster (Might still haev it somewherE) which started with a fully detailed engine which then got covered up! I also built a Warhound titan and a knight (Well before they were commercially available!) Inspiration is usually the problem.
Like any artwork (though I hesitate to call my toys art...it feels wrong!) they are never finished mearly abandoned. I can get a little carried away with detail on occasion! I built my railway gun with a movign working breech and recoil system... then built it into the turret.... and you can't get to it!
-
I can relate lol
I spend more time thinking how things connect or how should they work than on building. But with my working speed I have to make compromises to get things done. And I have to remind myself a lot that I'm making gaming pieces not dioramas. Some things are really unnecessary or in the way when gaming.
-
Indded, I have principals... but they can be flexible at times lol
Problem I always have with free form stuff is inspiration.
I'm fine at using exisint gthings but lack the raw imagination to come up with new things.
Even my enw things are evolution not revolution.
Might try and get this finished:

You will be able to soon... ;) I build models that get turned into kits usually for Die Waffenkammer :D
