Title: Upsheet Creek 2: The Shanty Town ('Upward' build completed) 02/03
Post by: Mason on December 28, 2017, 10:39:38 PM
I had an idea for the 2018 Build Something Competition that fits into my new project plans for 2018.....
 :D

Unfortunately this was never going to be completed in time for the BSC, but I am going to continue with this particular build and attempt to get around to doing the rest of the town as well....eventually!

Here is the plan:

An 'upwardly mobile' shanty build.

I have had plans for this for a long time. It involves taking the town of Upsheet Creek...

........... and building upwards.

This should help me create the rather ramshackle and and unplanned look that I am aiming for, a kind of 'sci-fi' version of the Ghost Market from The Good, The Bad and The Weird.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLPdsbN5U1o

I have used Upsheet Creek in our Inquisimunda games before with the simple addition of a few 'period' pieces added to the scenery set-up, but I would like to do this 'properly' and have dedicated scenery for it to get the 'look' that I am aiming for.

This approach did look 'OK', but not specifically 'sci-fi' enough for my liking.

Hopefully the new 'shanty' additions will make this work much better.

This BSC entry will be the first of these additions that will 'fit' onto an existing Creek building and transform it from an Old West settlement to one on Outland.

Hopefully.....

Those are absolutely fantastic looking town setups. If that's you're normal standard, I'll bet this is going to look really cool.

I am going to be making a start on this today, having spent a while this morning digging around in the loft for the bits that I had earmarked for this project.

I have found most of what I am looking for, the main part of this project will be accomplished with MDF.
MDF offcuts. Waste. Sprue, call it what you like.

The first picture below shows where I am starting with this effort. There is more 'waste' as I have been putting stuff aside and stealing any 'waste' from others if they are going to bin it. There is a fair pile of this now, which will be very useful as there are quite a few buildings to do.

The second and third pictures show some plastic 'bits from my bits box that may well be incorporated as well, although the Necromunda bulkheads may be used on a different 'building'. The hair rollers will definitely be utilised, though!
(Since I have had my hair cut I no longer need them......I thought I would say that before anyone else did.  ;D ).

Now, I just have to make that pile of bits into something that resembles an 'Ill-Advised' shanty structure.

Thanks, chaps.
Hopefully the scrap will become something useful in the end.
 :)

Foundation Level Part 1.

Well, a start was made earlier but I am going to have to post the progress in several posts to make the explanations tie in properly with the pictures.

First up, the top picture shows the original building that this structure is being made to sit on top of. This way I get to keep the Old West town and also make a new one with less work. Note the differing roof heights and angles on the three buildings (sorry for blurry piccie but you get the idea).

The second picture shows the underside of the first 'foundation' level that was built for the new structure to sit on top of.
There were quite a few different heights and angles to contend with here.
The yellow blocks are the only things that actually contact the original building so that should help preserve the paintwork on it.
(I hope!)

More to follow.....

Foundation Level Part 2

Once the 'foundation' level had been made it meant that the 'upward building' could begin.

One of the issues with this upwards expansion of the Old West town was storage:
Getting two set-ups with much only a small amount of extra space needed to store both was key.
With this in mind my first intention was to build an extension piece for each building so that several could be stored in a single large box.
Then, whilst the foundation level was being built I had a better idea: Make this in several pieces so that it takes up even less room!

So that is what happened: The rest of this build was going to be in sections that 'clipped' together in some way for stability and could 'fold' into a very small space.

With this in mind, another method was used with the next level to be built, a plastic box was taken from the junk pile and MDF bits stuck to it, including three pegs that would hold it in place on the foundation....you cannot see the pegs in the picture but basically, three of the MDF pieces that are glued onto the plastic shell extend downwards slightly creating pegs that fit into holes in the foundation level.

Post by: Mason on January 18, 2018, 08:58:33 AM
Foundation Level Part 3.

The third section made so far is the part that sits on the angled roof.

This made use of some leftover roofing sections, cut and inverted, so that it sits flat on the existing roof without moving.

The two yellow blocks clip onto the two raised 'lip' sections on the left hand side of the foundation structure in the final picture in the previous post.
This section will have a separate building built on top of it.

The first picture below shows the underside of the third section.
The second picture shows all three sections built so far sitting in place.
The final picture shows the three separate pieces alongside the original building.

That is the extent of the progress so far, and I have not used (and now probably wont be using) the 'commercial' kit in this build, so my 25% of commercial parts allowance can be spent elsewhere if I wish.
Result, as I have a few plastic and resin parts that really should help bring this life at a later stage.

Thank you, sir.
 :)

I do realise that there is nothing to really look at yet and what is there looks like a mess, but I am confident the next update will show where I am going with this in a much better fashion.

I think it will continue looking a mess for the time being, though.
At least until it is primed/undercoated.

Hopefully then it may start to look more presentable.

That's rather clever that is. You can transform your Old West layout much more dramatically than just adding scatter terrain while minimising the additional storage, etc required.

That is certainly the plan, mate.
I intend to make additions for all of the Upsheet Creek buildings, mostly building upwards to get a kind of Necromunda/Mordheim feel as I love the three dimensional nature of the gameplay in both of those settings.
It really does feel very different with there are more options when manoeuvring.

As for the storage solution: I am hoping, with the additions breaking down into smaller sections that it will not impact anywhere near as much as it would had I simply made new stuff from scratch.
Fingers crossed.

Cheers, Matt.

The foundation level was always going to be the fiddly bit as it needs to be stable for gaming, when those ever-so-careful gamers starting putting their filthy mitts near it.
I do not want the whole thing toppling over in a 'Bullock Moment' after all.

This building was always going to be the most difficult to 'pimp' given that it has four different 'levels' of roofline, the rest of them should prove much easier as they are all smaller and only have two rooflines to deal with at most.

Anyway, now that the boring levelling exercise is out of the way I can get to the fun bit: building it up higher and detailing it.
 :D

This will jot win ANY competitions, never mind this one, but it is fitting in with one of my projects for this year and fulfilling the most important factor of it: Not to take up too much space!

It is also fun to build something where I can literally just make it up as I go along.

Anyway, back to the build.
Here is a little bit of progress made yesterday, again in several posts so that proper descriptions can be written.

First up is a bit of work that has been done to the foundation that fits on the pitched roof.

The first picture showing the underside with the extra 'support' detailing, whilst the second picture shows the beading that helps hold the new building securely in place

Next, some more MDF off cuts were added to another plastic box to form the basis of the second building, which fits snugly into the foundation level, although seeing the pictures now I notice a couple of bits that need sorting out ....

I also decided to make use of a few odd shapes to make a small stairway.
The bit that slots into it will have the ladder attached to it which will be one of the access points from the ground floor level.

The final picture shows the current state of the build.

Are you going to paint over the clear plastic? Would some of it not looked good, see-through?

I know the earlier pics really did not show what was happening but these should give a hint as to the final intention.
Plenty more to do yet, though, loads more!

As for the plastic: I am torn with painting it of not and may opt for more of a kind of colour 'wash' over the 'windows' to allow that, although I may well just go with painting them in.

Those MDF offcuts have provided some nice shapes for the windows, I reckon.

I am privileged enough to see the work being done as it happens as Mason kindly allows me into his home to share his kitchen table, slapping some paint on little plastic men. He even makes me cups of coffee! It's enthralling watching the great man work, and I can see how well this one is progressing. It's gonna be good when it's finished, and it is fiendishly ingenious. The staircase is a doddle, just the same shape stuck on top of each other at an angle each time.
As for the transparent stuff: I really am unsure but will probably just paint the windows as it may just end up looking like a bit of clear plastic compared to the rest of it if I dont.....

I will probably go for 'painted' windows as that will be easier in the long run as there are quite a lot of buildings that will need the same treatment in the end.

There has been a little bit of progress but not much. Going to see Darkest Hour ate into the available time this week, but it was worth it. Piccies later if I get a chance....

Progress so far.
It is starting to come together as a viable shape now.
There are two more sections to add, one at either end on top of the flat areas, before I can get to adding a few details.
I am hoping to get the rest of the main pieces built by the end of the weekend so that detailing can begin next week.
Fingers crossed on that one.

These shots show a view from either side, the breakdown of the parts for storage, and finally, a quick stack of the pieces so far to see just what size box the extension will need to be stored in so far....

I think it is still quite difficult to actually 'see' what I am going for here, it does just look like a oile of junk on top of a building at the moment, I know.
Hopefully, when the details are on and a coat of primer is applied, it will all look so much better.

A final update of progress before the deadline....and here is the evidence that I completely failed to get it finished in time.
 ::)

To be honest, I just did not get enough time in the last couple of weeks to finish it.
A couple of hours having fun by adding small details yesterday was never going to be enough.

I am not bothered, though, as I am still going to finish it over time, and have had loads of ideas for bits to add to this piece and how to approach the rest of the Town, so it has certainly been worthwhile and WILL be finished

I have enjoyed getting this far and am looking forward to having another crack at the beastie when I get the time.

EDIT: I have tried to add pictures as attachments numerous times and have now given up...............I may try again later.

Keeping the option to use the OW buildings in their original guise was the main priority.
As for being responsible for your hoarding is fine with me. I can ease my own conscience by telling myself that I am only keeping crap so that you do not feel so bad doing it all by yourself.

Will there eventually be any additions which come down to or are at street level, to help it all blend together?

Thanks, chaps.

Yes.
There are going to be girders supporting the whole 'added on' structure, which will be attached to the external 'walkways' (the black plastic shims that have started to be added to the sides of the build) to give the impression of being able to support the additional weight.
This is one of the reasons that it will not be finished in time as I have only just figured out how they will 'lock' on to the other sections in such a way as not to fall off during gaming.

 lol lol
I aint finished with them yet!
 ;)

I did get a bit more done today, pics tomorrow, but I wont be finished in time for the weekend.

If one of the mods could move this to the Future Wars build I would appreciate it.
That way I can just rename it and continue the (re)building of Upsheet Creek 2 over there.

Many thanks to Captain Blood for moving this thread over here, and to Vanvlak for being so understanding of the move.
 :)

It was never going to be completed in time for the BSC but I am going to finish it, so I asked for it to be moved over here from the Workbench area so that I can bother you lot with the continuation of the build instead.
 :D
.
In fact, I am going to have a little time to tinker today so I will chuck some pictures of any progress up later.
 :)

The  progress made yesterday....

The 'upwards' building has pretty much finished now with the addition of the final 'hab unit'.
This was made from another plastic display box (I am really glad that I picked up all those diecast cars recently, as MDF sticks to it like a dream with superglue!).

A few bits of junk from the pile, some plastic bottles tops from my recycling bin and a bit of green stuff for cables, windows etc and this level is pretty much done. I may add bits but they will just be for detailing.

Here is a breakdown of all the separate elements so far....

It also appears that I will have to, at least partially, glue them together as the latest addition is making the whole structure lean too much. In fact, you can see the lean in the first picture. This is due to the sloping roof of the building underneath.
This is not a problem, but I will be painting first as getting in all the nooks and crannies would be a pain if it was stuck together beforehand.

The final bit of building will see the addition of the stairs etc that will connect it to the 'ground' level, which also includes adding the 'supports'.

I've only just stumbled across this thread, I like the demented genius of what you're doing here & look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thanks, chaps.
Much appreciated.
 :)

I am hoping to get the build finished at the weekend and then I can get on with the best bit: Painting and assembling the bugger!
Then it will, hopefully, all make sense.

Coming along nicely mate! 8) What about some support beams to hold the levels upright? That way you would have to glue too much together.

Thanks, Suber.
It has been fun and relaxing putting this together from junk, so I am looking forward to painting it when it is done so that I can get on to the next one.

The pieces for that arrived this morning in the form of a kids car park playset.
 ;D ;D

As for sticking it together: I think that I will have to glue a fair bit of it together for stability.
Just how much, we shall see.
 :D

If I had not gotten carried away and kept on building upwards it would have been fine...

It's looking pretty interesting Paul, really varied textures and parts which will look just like a proper shanty build. I like the plastic rooftop window and pipe details  8)  8)

Even primed it will look rather hodgepodge, but if you do the base colours and hairspray/salt effect I think it will look pretty amazing mate.

Good luck Paul.

Cheers
