Title: BSC2018 McMordain's Post-Apoc/Necromunda Bar
Post by: McMordain on December 28, 2017, 11:32:53 PM
Well I think the most ill-advised thing is that I did enter the BSC again...
Apparently I still have enough free space for half-done projects. lol

As for what will I build, I'm not sure. I want to try to concentrate my hobby efforts for next year a little, to get things done. At the moment there is two game which have my interest and are played or will be played at our club.
These are the new Necromunda and the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. So for now I will try to think of something that fits one of these games.
I'm not good with abstract thinking so I have a hard time getting my mind around this years theme.
The two thing that comes to mind is either a vehicle of sort with an out of place engine or a building built on or under something dangerous. Maybe... I don't know, this will need some time.

So after thinking I will build a bar/gang hideout for Necromunda. As for ill-advised, the owner(s) thought that it is a good idea to build it over a large pool of acid. Some sketches will follow probably over the weekend.

I like this... :D also because I'm working on a Necromunda project too.

While I haven't started to build anything yet, but I sort of finalized my plan. I mean I have a general plan now for the build... a starting point. (I need one, so I can deviate from it later lol)

The idea with this is that someone (maybe with some orkish taint) thought it would be great to build a thing over a big acid/chemical pool in an abandoned and ruined factory.
The base for this is 40 cm x 40 cm. The bar will be around 20 cm x 20 cm, but it wont be an exact square. Probably.
I want this to be somewhat compatible with the Sector Mechanicus terrain from GW so the height of the levels will be based on their stuff. I have a Promethium Refinery kit for reference.
Also I plan to build this to be mostly generic, so I that I could use it for other games, beside Necromunda.
So that's it for now.

Finally I had time to work on this.

The base:

I glued together two 3 mm thick HDF board. This helped somewhat to flatten their warping. It doesn't lay perfectly flat, but it's good for now.

The placement of the pipes. This will be the height of the levels.

I cut a grove for the pringles tube. It should help with gluing it in place.

This is how the other pipes will be fixed to the base. I can't cut straight with my hot wire cutter, that's why the smaller bits are conical.

And the start of the support structure for the main build.

Still a lot to do, but at least I started :P

I look forward to seeing where this goes as I have a load of stuff to build in a similar vein, so ideas WILL be stolen.

Pringles seem to be a prime material of choice this year too -I'm almost feeling a bit less accomplished as I haven't used any... :D

Ship? What ship?  ???
I'm kidding :) It's in the same "one-day-I finish-it" phase as a lot of my other projects. There was absolutely no interest in any kind of skirmish sci-fi game which really killed my motivation.
I may finish it this year if I can play Necromunda regularly in our club. Don't hold your breath though...

I look forward to seeing where this goes as I have a load of stuff to build in a similar vein, so ideas WILL be stolen.

Well I steal get most of my errr.. inspiration from the amazing threads here on LAf so if you don't mind stealing second hand ideas, feel free to do it.  ;)

Pringles seem to be a prime material of choice this year too -I'm almost feeling a bit less accomplished as I haven't used any... :D

I have a lot and it takes up space, so it's about time I use them up. Some of it are quiet old  lol

Today's progress was not much. I spent a hour last night thinking about how to proceed. I realized that if I start gluing things together (which would be the easiest way to build), then it will be quiet hard to paint the thing.
So I have to build it in parts, and possibly paint some of it before assembling.
Obviously the first thing I need to finish is the base. Which means I need to do the detailing on the pipes before I can fix them in place.

The small pipes. The pins for the lower rings will be put in when I'm ready to glue them in place, as they will help fix the tubes to the blue foam inserts.

I made a template to help positioning the steps.

The first three will be "full" steps, like the one the Escher ganger is standing on. The other 12 or so will be an assortment of different designs. The first step on the above pic will move up, because the water effect will be around that level.
I like doing these (and the whole thing as well), because I don't need to worry much about precise measuring and cutting. :D

I also decided to make much lower wall ruins or I may forgo them entirely. They would be to big when two levels high and too much extra work.

While walking home today I come up with a rough history for the building. It came from the ideas of the little details I want to include in the build.
So while the current use of the place is as a bar, originally it was the dwelling place of a hunter. I share other bits and pieces as I go along.

Tomorrow more work on the stairs.
Till next time.

Well last week was not very productive...
Any way I make progress on the stairs, and did some detailing on the pringles tube. Which will be a tank instead of a pipe.

Most of the stairs needs support from below and a few doesn't have all the bolts added.

While I don not have nice rubber mould for nuts and bolts like tomrommel1, I have the next best thing, which is instamold and some nice details from various terrain sets.

GW's Sector Mechanicus stuff has some nice details which is really useful.
I'm on holiday today and the plan is to finish the base. I need to do the sides around the base for the water effect and do any detailing on the tubes that cannot be done after they are fixed in place.
Then I can start working on the upper level.

Still a lot of work on the base and I need to go to work in about 6 hours, so that's it for now.
On the bright side, I just noticed that the deadline is not Feb. 10, as I thought for some reason, so I'm not that far behind schedule. lol

Well I'm yet to get to the bar part in the build. I can't wait to start on it though, I have a lot of ideas to make it unique. Everybody is invited for a drink, once it's drunk done (I should really sleep, and use the preview button...).  ;)
Yesterday I finished the walkway to the stairs and fixed the steps 6-15 to the tube. I will fix steps 1-5 after painting.

I also added supports for most of the steps. Some will need a little GS detailing.

The floor is also not glued to the frame of the walkway. I'm worried that I will not be able to get the water effect under it nicely. So it will be fixed after painting and the water effect.

I will have to work during the next two Saturdays though, as I cannot work too much on it during the week (I realized yesterday after finishing the walkway, that it's 2:30 am... actually I should be sleeping now o_o).
Anyway the base is almost done, and if not with the progress rate but I'm satisfied with the build itself.  It does look great so far :D

Made some progress during the (extended) weekend.

Detailing is done on the walkway to the stairs.

I also made sign for the bar, with some lights (not actual lights, mind you. That would be a little too much for me... o_o)

I'm not 100% happy with it, but it will do.
So, as I said before, the original owner (and perhaps the builder) was a hunter, and his/her place was always known as the Hunter's nest. So when the first enterprising businessman took the place sometime after the hunter went missing, he decided to keep the name. But this was a really long time ago. Nowadays no one remembers if hunter was the name or the occupation of the first owner. Also most people call the bar simple The Nest.

I'm almost done with the base, only the wire fence left on the backside.

Some detail of the bigger wall piece.

Some of it will be more visible after painting, which I will start this week. This probably means I will not post any more pics about the base.
Now onto the main course: the bar.

I'm certainly hope so. I will be a very sad panda, if it wont be used much. :(

Yeah, the GW Skulls set is great. The bird skull isn't the only one I will use in this build  ;)

I forgot that my paints are in our club, so I have to take them home first to start painting. In the meantime I bought some supplies to do it. I will try something I never did before, that is using salt for weathering. clanmac have a great tutorial in his awesome Junktown Scrapyard Crew thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=79344.msg1325293#msg1325293) about the technique, I will follow that. His thread and work is also one of the main source of inspiration for this build.

I also started working on the upper level, I will post pics tomorrow.

Where are the bolts head moulds from?

I mentioned in an earlier post (here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=106266.msg1334352#msg1334352[u)), that I use instamold to copy details. It's best to use for one sided moulds, but I used it occasionally to make "normal" moulds. It's much trickier, but it can be done.
The various nuts come from GW's Sector Mechanicus set and the bolts from a piece that was part of a snap-together building kit.

I made some progress, but much less than I should have. My motivation was really low this weekend. The good news is, I don't have to work on next Saturday, so my hope is that I could spend the entire weekend on getting it finished for painting.

Some added details for the side of the upper floor's base.

I made a connector from two carbon tablet tube's cap. They are a perfect fit for the paper tubes. This helps me with securing the upper floor, without gluing, while I work on it.

A walkway around the Pringles tube. It will not go fully around the tube. The two supports on the upper left side are for a base of the stair that will lead to the roof. That should add some more play area.

I also base coated most of the base parts, and I will start painting it soon.

Nice job on that walkway, reminds me of one around the bridge of a small tanker we were building (1:1 scale!) at the old shipyard in a former life - this was 5 decks up, and VERY narrow. Looked a lot like this, except the surface consisted of square bars with one edge top, to increase grip, as it was extremely narrow (40cm?). It was only used for inspection, cleaning and maintenance of the bridge windows from outside.

Ahoy!

So, the bad news first: there is very little chance that the thing will be done and painted by the deadline. If I push myself hard, I could probably finish the building part, but there is no way I can paint this in an afternoon. The only thing in which I'm slower than building stuff is painting stuff  lol
Also even if I "finish" building it, the only way I can do that if I don't do the interior. But I want a playable inside and I cannot consider the thing done if I would still work on it later. I did some calculations as well and it seems the one bottle of water effect (200 ml) I bought for the competition is not enough to cover the base as much as I would like. It would be around 1 mm thick and I wanted at least 5 mm. I don't have the time and money to buy two more bottles at the moment. And applying it would take 2 or 3 days as well...
After last years fiasco with the big and complicated spaceship, I planned to do something simple, which I can finish on time. It seems I cannot do that though  lol

On the bright side I did manage to make progress. Lots of pics below.

The Pringles tube is done.

I added some gs nuts to the rim, but forgot to make proper photos of that. You can see them on the next couple of pics though.

After the Pringles tank, I started on the structure of the bar.

I decided that the stair tube was/is an air vent, so I added a little ventilator to the side. The builder cut into it and floored it to add some space.

I cut the base for the roof as well.

The floor of the bar was done next.

After this I got to the part I really enjoy, detailing the place. I started with the owner's room. It is his/her living place and doubles as a safe room, if tempers get heated after on to many drinks.

I added some magnets so I can take the door out if I want it open.

Some more gs nuts.

The other side of the door and the wall between the room and the bar area. I added a video/computer screen, also magnetised, if I want this to be more high tech. I think I will add a little magnetised satellite unit to the top of the Pringles tube somewhere to make some sense for it.
I don't have any furniture, so I made some as well.

For low-tech settings, I made two lockers.

And the last two walls. The bed is on the opposite side to the computer and the wall with the gun and escape hatch is facing the door. In hindsight it would have made more sense to make it the other way, as the hatch opens over the toxic sludge. I mostly make things up as I go which complicates things sometime. But I come up with a solution for this, which I will implement tomorrow.
The shelf will be over the hatch. I don't have many useful bits to make the place lived in so I added whatever I could find in among my stuff. The gun can also be taken off the wall. That is for a scenario I have in mind for the place, when it's done. Taken of it can be used as a token to indicate who has it. And I can make one with a more 40K like weapon later.
The bed need some gs work. I need to do a mattress, some covers and a pillow. Or maybe I will try to do a sleeping bag.

After this is done I will start on the bar/kitchen. And after that comes the drinking area and the roof. THEN I can start painting it...

This looks amazing.  You made the right choice.  Deadlines and contests are well and fine but rushing such a fine project would be selling it short.  Keep at your build and give it the amazing finish it deserves.

If you don't make the deadline, post a pic of the incomplete model for the finish - it'll still be nice to see this there, even if incomplete - it certainly deserves to be part of the show.

Thanks for the nice words guys, as always, I'm happy you like my work.
I will keep working on this, till it is finished this time. I really do not need an other box with a half-made stuff on my shelves.  :P
I still can't promise that it will be done till the deadline, even with the extra week...

What is the mesh used on the walkway floor below?

The mesh I use is cut from an old mosquito-net.

Today I started to work on the bar.

The bottles and mugs arrived today (they are not glued yet to the counter). The mugs are okay but most of the bottles from the set I bought are to big. I put the three smallest on the counter to get a look. The rest is much bigger unfortunately. So if anybody could tell me where I could get beer-bottle-like bottles in 28 mm which are not as big as a Goliath ganger's arm, I would be really thankful. I cannot have a bar without bottles  lol

Beside drinks, the owner serves food as well. Though only the really hungry or really stupid customers eat at the Nest. And even they don't make the same mistake twice  :D No one knows where the meat comes from, and no one wants to know either. But the owner is happy to cook anything the customers bring, for a price of course, as well.
Of course this is a rough place, so there is a gun under the counter.
Speaking of the owner, I'm also looking for a suitable figure to be the bartender/owner. If anybody have a figure in mind, feel free to share it. He/she does not need to be sci-fi/post-apoc looking, I'm confident enough in my converting skills to make even a medieval one working.

May I suggest you trawl through ebay?  I bought some coca cola bottles off of there that are pretty teeny tiny.  They were linked in someone else's thread here on LAF.

Thanks, I had a look at the ebay offerings. There are some which looks good, until I get to the shipping price... paying 35-40$ for a 5$ thing is way over my limit. Something form inside the EU would be preferable. Although this gave me an idea. I will take a look at aliexpress. Maybe they have something I can use.

Yes! That user also did tin cans, also from plastic sprue or thick straws, and they scored the lines with a pipe cutter. pics may be a victim of the photobucket fiasco as it was an old thread, but the info will still be useful.  :)

I built a thing:

I also made a chopping table.

The Nest Special is made inhouse  :D

With this I call the bar/kitchen done. Next is the tables for the drinking room, the stair to the roof, the roof itself and some decoration here and there.
I also started painting yesterday, in-between teaching some basic painting for a couple of new guys at our club. I tried out the sponge technique on the two small tube and the walkway to the stairs. I like the results and it was done really quick. Don't hold your breath, but I may be able to finish this in time.

Fantastic!  If you still haven't found your barkeep yet I have two for you to have a look at.  The first is a fantasy bartender from the reaper Townsfolk sets.  He is the stereotypical portly, surly, middle aged and balding.  The other guy is the black scorpion barkeep from their tombstone old west range.  More burly than than an outright porker he has an apron, a beard, and a mallet that you could keep or swap out (it might be good to have a mallet for bashing in things heads before you put them on the grill).

Hm, there are some good ones here. Thanks, I will try this when I have some spare money.

I don't like the Reaper one, but you just reminded me that I have that Black Scorpion set. I think the guy with the hammer supposed to be a blacksmith, though he could work as a barkeeper. But there is a bartender in that set as well, and I like the look of him. I will see what can I do with him after the competition ends.

Love how this is coming along!  I may have to (poorly) imitate those I-beam stairs, those look great.  :D

It was not that difficult to make. I made a blueprint for it on paper, placed the I-beam on it, and marked the steps. Then used a small saw to cut the notches. Fortunately the steps fit into it perfectly. I glued the steps into one side, then put on the other side. That was the hardest part, as the notches do not lined up perfectly, and the plastic glue was drying fairly quickly. After this I put small strips of 1x1 mm plastic to inside under the steps for additional support.

Also I did a lot since last time.

Here is the top half of the Pringles tank undercoated.

I also did the salt weathering on both the top and bottom half. The result is... well not very good. I ran into all sort of problems. Hopefully the sponge technique will cover it...
I undercoated the bar as well, before adding the walls.

Then to distract myself a little, I did some gs work. A thin mattress and the remains of some unfortunate creature on the chopping table.

I did some decoration for the place...

...which turned into this:

The skull trophies and the prepared insect are remnants from the previous owner. The current one has a taste for some art, and a collector. He has a side business as a fence for artistic items and accepts it as payment if he likes it. The big mask and the little fella under it will be painted with metal colours. I'm still undecided if I will paint the bird as a sculpture or as a stuffed one.

The side walls added.

I do not thought out how I will attach these, so I had to do a lot of improvisations. This also meant that I had to add larger sections and it's not as patchworkie as I originally wanted it to be.

This is how the inside looks with just the walls:

And with most of the stuff:

I'm in a process to add the nuts and bolts which secure the panels to the outside.

I will cheat a little here and I will not do their counterpart in the inside. I ran out of nuts so I will make some more tonight and sculpt a blanket and a pillow for the bed as well. Then I will finish the roof before going to bed. At which point the build will be mostly done.
Tomorrow I will paint the base, finish detailing the walls, then start painting the bar. Hopefully I can finish it before the deadline.

The blanket and pillow added.

Roof mostly done.

Bare metal parts undercoated, I just need to add the remaining 44 nuts to the white plastic strips. That will happen tomorrow, as I ran out again, and had to make new ones.

The sides got the securing bits added as well.

Painting is underway. See you at the finish line :)

Thanks. The beetle is from the Treelord kit. Most of the Sylvaneth stuff have an assortment of small animal like sprites. They are quiet useful as strange critters.
