My entry for the Build Something Contest 2018...
In the year 1884 the chinese imperial navy was ill advised to use wooden war junks against modern french warships.
-
Always love a good junk. :)
-
This should be good - what scale?
-
Thanks for the comments,
i want to build something for 28mm. At the moment i have to plans at the start:
The Red Dragon made by Artesania Latina. Super-Hobby is a great side, they show all relevant infos for the construction of this ship
https://www.super-hobby.co.uk/products/RED-DRAGON.html (https://www.super-hobby.co.uk/products/RED-DRAGON.html)
The other plan is a Shaohsing Chuan, I ordered the german book but the plans are the most complicated i have ever seen and I am not sure if I can build something like that...

For the BSC2018 I assembled my team...
... and started with scaling up the pictures of the Red Dragon plan found on the super-hoppy side by 300%. The plan was printed and clued to 4mm plywood
(https://i.imgur.com/HlInx4I.jpg)
After assuming a waterline, everything fits more or less together...
...but some members of the team soon show a great lack of interest...
.. to be continued...
-
That looks like a great start, very promising, and a good use of plans.
8) 8)
I must say that I can only sympathise with the lack of effort. Some of my own team mates put in the same kind of shift too....
;)
-
Hey, you're meant to do this on your own. >:(
Then again, getting a cat on your side is ill-advised, so it adds to the theme and cancels out any dog-bonus.
I should know, I have 4 cats.... :D
And - nice progress! :o 8)
-
Pussy!..... he痴 a slacker!
Good start! :o How easy is it to cut the 4mm plywood?
-
Nice project, ichwillauch! Don't know if it would be of any help, but I built that same Artesania Latina ship in kit form 3 years ago, here's the link:

Wait a second, I was told teams were verboten. Now I need to convince my wife to move up our puppy-acquisition schedule so that I too can take advantage of this "team".
The junk looks awesome, this is going to be a neat build
-
great start of a classic ship build

I've got 5 with 1 being a puppy, unless you want someone judging your arm as you try to paint it's not the kind of team work you hope for.
-
Get on with it, and post many updates. I want to learn from you so I can make one of these in 1/30 scale. ;D
-
A Ship :-* I like Ships :D
Good start, I will follow this closely.
-
Thanks everyone for the nice comments

This is a very accurate and beautiful version of the ship!
Pussy!..... he痴 a slacker!
Good start! :o How easy is it to cut the 4mm plywood?
Maybe I used a wrong word, I am using a jigsaw.
Meanwhile the decks were planked...
and the innere structure is filled with balsa to stabilize the plywood construction
(https://i.imgur.com/QRQ5Teb.jpg)
next step will be to sand everything into right shape and start planking the hull
-
Very informative build! Thanks for showing us the process!
-
Very nice project! you've clearly done this type of ship model before?
-

No, this type of ship is the first one, but i have started the Half Moon before where I have learned a lot of things (reread as: made a lot of mistakes I hope to avoid this time...)
An Angle Grinder is an awesome tool to work with... next step is starting with clueing the first planks

-
Ah the Half Moon is an important part of my local history (Hudson Valley, NY). Are you steaming those planks? - they bend like noodles when they are steamed
-
Fascinating to watch how this is done.
-
Very nice progress. It looks great.
-
Wow. Looking good. :-* Thanks for all the step by step pics
-
Thanks everybody for the nice comments
Planking the chinese junk is a time-consuming activity, waiting until the clue is dry enough for the next plank to be fixed. So the idea was born to build a second ship, this time an Aviso class ship for the french navy that is faster and more heavily armed than any chinese junk. The plan is taken from tin-soldiers, its the "water witch" paper model upscaled to 1:50
First step: the inner structure

See, now that's only possible when you have a team behind you. It's the cat, isn't it? :D
-
that looks neat indeed
-
Thanks guys. In fact I have a large team assembled, two cats and a dog...
Meanwhile...
Parts of the decks of the water witch are now planked. I have found some old Foundry guns in my lead mountain and waiting for the big gun to arrive ordered by HLBS.
The lower part of the Red Dragon hull and the decks are finished, now the sides are build up.
And now to something completely different...
Yesterday a chinese laser cut model kit of a junk arrived. Its a very nice model bought via ebay http://www.ebay.de/itm/chinesische-Segel-Zhoushan-Segelboot-aus-Holz-Modell-Satz/321661758918?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 (http://www.ebay.de/itm/chinesische-Segel-Zhoushan-Segelboot-aus-Holz-Modell-Satz/321661758918?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649), but it's too small and would fit to 10mm or 15mm.
So everything is scaled up to 166% and by now the inner structure is more or less ready.
-
This is looking SLICK! :o
-
I love your build as I am into all things Chinese! Plus it is a very neat and tidy build. You and your team are extremely productive and I hope that you will continue to show us the side builds in your shipyard :D

Many thanks for the replys, but today I can show a perfect example of ill-advised, because my team and I were...
- ill advised to build the third ship too fast lol
- ill advised to not build the lower structure of the hull first lol
- ill advised to clue the sides one after each other lol
and the whole structure bends while drying... :'( :'( :'(

The Red Dragon ship is, so far, amazing! :o....I知 sure you値l work out the problems with the new one! 8)
-
More ships! YAY :-*
Good work.

I have to agree with my esteemed colleague: 'Tis all looking mighty fine from here and, as you are an experienced shipbuilder now, I agree that you will certainly find a solution to your warping problem.
8) 8)
-
And if you dont, you can just say that its ill-advised to ship out with a warped hull :p
Seriously though, building several ships for this challenge is quite impressive and your planking pictures are very educational.
-
Thanks for the comments, I think I will start again from the beginning with the third ship, because the waterline was a little bit to high.
Meanwhile, the decks of the water witch are full planked, the sides will be made of Card, that is much easier and faster to build.
The Red Dragon made some progress, too
(https://i.imgur.com/KWxf4Uo.jpg)
-
A thing of beauty.
-
Very cool - nice planking there, and that grille is the works. 8) 8)
-
Next Steps:
The water witch got her hull, and meanwhile the big gun arrived. A parrot gun from HLBS, super nice model and super service, came with two sheets for instructions.
I found some late medieval guns in my lead mountain for the Red Dragon. The gun ports are simple grommets.
-
Loving the lines on that hull! 8)
-
beginning with the third ship
Enough now! That's just rubbing it in. :D
The Red Dragon is really looking nice. :-*
-
Dang, those are really freakin nice. :-*
-
Thanks for the comments!
Meanwhile at the shipyard...
The hull of the water witch is more or less finished, now the upper structure is to be done.
This will be converted into a wreck (the banana boat)
The hull of the Red Dragon is finished, now the deck must be detailed
(https://i.imgur.com/2sMS3tI.jpg)
And the third ship was redone, this time with a strong inner structure to prevent the ship to bend like a banana
(https://i.imgur.com/MiNFAFY.jpg)
-
Really beautiful work. And good on you for deciding to convert the banana boat into a wreck - never waste an opportunity.
-
I am in awe! :o So much work in so little time! And such quality!

Looks very very good. What is the darker edge made of? Putty or something else?

Looks very promising as well. By chance did you save the plans for this in a format you can share? :D
-
The Red Dragon is really looking very good. Great modelling :)
-
Looking good.....
No looking fantastic.
Well done.

Great work! 8) are you putting filler in between the planks? Does that not hide the detail when it comes to painting?
-
Fabulous work :o :o
-
Very impressive! :-* :-* Have you considered the paint scheme yet? My understanding is that the sails would be red if the junk was out of Canton (Guangzhou) and green if out of Amoy (Xiamen). I am not sure how long that lasted across time or if other cities/regions had their own identifying colors.

The wood was primed with ebony glaze. For the plans pm is sent.

Yes I use a filler, its called Moltofill and you can't see a difference after painting.

Thank you very much for this info. I think I will go for red sails or using washes to darken them.
Meanwhile, there is nothing new on the Red Dragon, but the Water Witch made an update.
First parts of the ships are primed now. The ship will have four launches, the first is made with balsa, three more will follow, at the moment I have no idea, how a Davit for such a ship should look like.

The mighty gun of the water witch
(https://i.imgur.com/jnRurUq.jpg)
The transport junk got some planking.
-
That Water Witch is amazing! :o Such a clean build!
-
A small Update:
The water witch has now more upper structure and the gun got its slewing ring.
The planking on the transport junk is more or less finished. Now a lot of sanding is necessary.

I知 liking this :)
cheers

Thanks for the nice comment.
Now the third ship needs some painting before continuing with the details and the sailing, so these are now the last pics, hope you like it

Indeed.
I would be proud to own any one of them.
And you have three!
:-* :-*

An image upload problem is ongoing, but is being tackled; BUT due to this issue I decided to extend the deadline by a week, so you have a little more time.
-
Final pic sent for the BSC2018. I wouldn't have accomplished it without my Team and the additional week granted by Vanlak.
-
Your team did well :o 8)
-
Excellent work! A double ration of beer is in order for your team!
-
Excellent. Hopefully we"ll see some side shots soon.
