Title: BSC2018 Juxt's Sorcerer's cabin... you'd be ill advised to knock on the door
Post by: Juxt on January 01, 2018, 06:51:04 PM
Deep in the forests of Yokainoyama there is rumoured to live a hermit, wise in the ways of the supernatural and unreal, but despising of all mankind and their follies.  After living alone for over a hundred years with only the company of wild animals, he has gained an insight into the natural world that few can rival.  This shining beacon of knowledge and power is often sought out by the local residents for the lifting of curses or spells and the crafting of amulets, but you would be ill-advised to seek his advise, the rumours also say that he only accepts a very special form of payment for his work, perhaps one that you're unwilling to pay...

A massage from a producer?

Looking forward to seeing a step by step process of one of your creations.

And so it begins!  I don't want to spoil the evolution of the project by posting any concept sketches, but I will drop a few keywords in here to get you thinking:  Onmyoji, Howl's Moving Castle, Baba Yaga, Karakasa Kozo...

I started off with a simple foamboard structure- I'm not really that bothered by how square things are for this build, I want the end result to be a bit crooked and run down so the odd off angle here and there will probably help me out.  To help hide the seams in the foamboard and add a basic texture to the model I covered the structure in heavy watercolour paper.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180109_115107_zpskpwqkyqy.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180109_115107_zpskpwqkyqy.jpg.html)

The whole model was stippled with an uneven mixture of liquid green stuff and stucco texture paste.  I sponged it on with a bit of blister pack foam and then gouged in a few random marks and scratches with my finger nail.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180109_132842_zpssdbviskb.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180109_132842_zpssdbviskb.jpg.html)

After a quick sanding to knock the bigger bumps and spikey bits from the stucco, I built up some wooden panels from various bits of wood I had hanging around (I'm trying not to spend any money at all on this build, everything has to come from my stash)  I used a mixture of veneer inlay wood, balsa wood, a broken bamboo hand fan, coffee stirrers- anything spare and wooden.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180110_112835_zpsc5wrjll7.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180110_112835_zpsc5wrjll7.jpg.html)

At this point I realised that the first level of my house was starting to look too square and symmetrical so I threw on a quick and hasty extension with a bark shingle roof.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180110_112929_zps9wovo3u1.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180110_112929_zps9wovo3u1.jpg.html)

Here you can see the start of my first experiment with joists to support a thatched roof.  After raising a square section in the middle of the roof I extended some matchsticks at an approximate angle...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180111_175559_zps3hwly6h2.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180111_175559_zps3hwly6h2.jpg.html)

...and layered on some boards cut from the ribs of a broken bamboo fan (I may as well use Japanese materials for a Japanese build right?)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180111_175615_zps7jjg2ldw.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180111_175615_zps7jjg2ldw.jpg.html)

I left the roof removable for now so I can sculpt thatch on it and reach the undersides easily... All I need to do now is find the bravery to start sculpting  ;)

Thanks guys :)

Nearly every Japanese building of size requires a raised platform to keep the wooden structure from rotting away on the wet ground, now seemed like the right time to build mine and set the final footprint.  It's just a piece of foamboard edged in coffee stirrers and then planked on the top face.  I'm undecided if I'll need to plank the underside of it, and I still need to build the supporting legs and some kind of hand rail.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180118_080407_zpsc9evymct.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180118_080407_zpsc9evymct.jpg.html)

The ground floor of the building sits quite comfortably off-centre on the platform- the two doorways having the most space around them, while the side and rear of the build wouldn't see much traffic or require a real walkway.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180118_080440_zpswoldjtkr.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180118_080440_zpswoldjtkr.jpg.html)

I topped the roof of the ground floor with another foamboard structure.  Again, wrapped in watercolour paper and textured the same as the other floor.  I'm yet to decide what wooden panelling will or won't be on this floor, almost certainly some windows are needed.  This floor is intentionally off centre- it will eventually be supported by a crude buttress made from bamboo I think- although it isn't as crooked as the picture appears.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180118_080505_zpsfhjcxc7s.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180118_080505_zpsfhjcxc7s.jpg.html)

Another roof and tiny room as before, this time marking out the final height of the building itself, although the rest of the build will bring the top of the roof another 8" higher up than it is now
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180118_080600_zpsn4msj9jx.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180118_080600_zpsn4msj9jx.jpg.html)

almost time for the interesting stuff to start, almost  ;)

Blimey, this really is taking shape nicely.

It is also certainly going to be a much more imposing piece than I had in mind at first, certainly not just a 'cabin in the woods'.
I really do not think that the curious should be knocking on that door.

Awesome. Are those 1:1 chicken claws?!

Yep!  :D  Pewter hawk feet intended for taxidermy use.  They have some awful mould lines which'll need working over, and the rest of the legs will need sculpting somehow.  Really nice bits though, and they make them for all size birds from little songbirds up to big birds of prey.

Thanks guys :)  the Baba Yaga element will be started next week I think, for now though, the often ill-advised act of attempting to sculpt thatched roofs in 28mm.

I started off by applying a layer of wood glue to my roof structure, air-drying clay has a habit of not sticking to anything and this helps it grab on whilst sculpting.  While the glue was still wet I smooshed on (technical term there) an even layer of fimo air light and shaped it into the thatched shape that I wanted, not being too careful about getting anything square or completely smooth.  The next step was just scoring the bejesus out of it with a dull scalpel blade, and picking at a few areas with a pin to tease some bits apart and add some uneven waving, maybe it's being blown by some magical breeze?  You can also see a few areas of crackle paint added to my plasterwork for extra texture.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180121_101058_zpstobe1kuj.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180121_101058_zpstobe1kuj.jpg.html)

The groove in the front?  To allow a bamboo and wood buttress to be fixed in place, supporting the crooked first floor. Sculpted in greenstuff over a length of styrene tube.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180121_101431_zpsnzb3wd6y.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180121_101431_zpsnzb3wd6y.jpg.html)

Also, inspired by Mason's build, I scrounged some mdf sprue offcuts from a friend and fashioned a section of railing to prevent my sorcerer from tripping and falling off the walkway...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180121_101118_zpsso04e2sg.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180121_101118_zpsso04e2sg.jpg.html)

First floor roof and the second floor.  Same as the earlier thatched roof just slightly less putty  ;D  I still need to apply some edging to hide the seams between the thatch and the wall...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180121_101215_zps80vk18ig.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180121_101215_zps80vk18ig.jpg.html)

...and where the shack currently stands, starting to look like something

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180121_101141_zpsnxe16mes.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180121_101141_zpsnxe16mes.jpg.html)

The next steps will be building doors, adding windows to the first floor and finishing the thatching off.  After that a few little character pieces like amulets, charms, tatty door screens, sculls, herbs etc.

Just a quick update for now-

I need four identical windows for on the first floor of the shack, luckily I had enough ancient silicon and resin to knock up a quick mould and blast a few out.  Considering how out of date the chemicals were, I'm pleasantly surprised by how well the casts have turned out.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180124_092344_zpsqaqzsa3n.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180124_092344_zpsqaqzsa3n.jpg.html)

the master for the windows was just a piece of foam board, edged with coffee stirrers and the bar detailing made with 1mm x 0.4mm inlay veneer wood.  The wash of liquid green stuff was just to help me see if there were any areas that needed further attention.

It was just some random silicon I had knocking around, I think it was t28 from Tirantis but I couldn't swear to it  ;)

A bit more progress on the front door and surrounding area, it really needs a spray of primer to bring all the differing elements together and make it all visible.

This week has seen some detailed progress that you'd probably not notice without being told, but it's all important stuff...  and a blast of spray primer to help get past the confusing mishmash of materials

Firstly a big shimenawa (enclosing rope) on the second floor sculpted from greenstuff.  Shimenawa are used as both a warning to people that a mighty spirit is contained within something- like a spiritual high voltage sign, and as a means of suppressing the spirit and containing it behind the rope boundary.  Normally seen on shrines and wrapped around particularly old trees, I'm still uncertain as to whether it is warning of the sorcerer who lives in the shack or the building itself...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180129_083106_zps3d3iv899.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180129_083106_zps3d3iv899.jpg.html)

The bamboo support buttress was gently heated over a candle flame and bent into a slight curve to suggest the pressure applied to it by the crooked walls.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180129_083124_zps1615vhbp.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180129_083124_zps1615vhbp.jpg.html)

A greenstuff straw hat and broom were sculpted and applied to the build to start to give it a lived-in feel.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180129_083144_zpsyc1hoedy.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180129_083144_zpsyc1hoedy.jpg.html)

A roll of straw thatching was sculpted and applied as a join between the walls and thatched roofs, providing a slight decorative element and ensuring that the building is watertight.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180129_083200_zpsrmfdwjwr.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180129_083200_zpsrmfdwjwr.jpg.html)

The rear of the building, I wanted to keep this area relatively plain, nothing spooky or supernatural going on here, honest...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180129_083238_zpsrnvdtrrr.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180129_083238_zpsrnvdtrrr.jpg.html)

...and just a scale shot with an Onmyoji- he's not the man who lives here, he might be the enemy of the inhabitant, I'm not sure yet, this is the sort of detail that evolves as the build goes on.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180129_083500_zpshyhfcchu.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180129_083500_zpshyhfcchu.jpg.html)

I'm quite pleased that I've gotten this far with £0 spent and no commercially available parts used.  I think I'll be able to carry on with the £0 target, but the feet come into play soon so my not-scratch-built ratio is going to drop a tad

Well, the whole thing looks stunning as it is and if you called it a day there it would be a spectacular build, especially as no commercial parts were harmed in the making of it....
 8) 8) 8)

...but you have yet to add the bird feet, so I am guessing that we all cannot wait to see just how that is going to turn out.

Thanks buddy  :)

Here's a super quick mock-up of the legs.  Just with the feet, a length of hardwood dowel and a bit of wire coated in green stuff to extend the ankle slightly.

I also made myself a little texture stamp out of miliput to speed up the skin sculpting procedure, should work quite nicely I think...

I hope it'll balance alright-  the building currently weighs exactly 200g, the legs have no flex at the moment even when I put 1kg of weight on them so that allows me to make a few adjustments if needed and add paint etc. The centre of gravity seems to be right where the feet connect with the ground (the angle of the photo makes it look further back than it actually is)  of course it could all go very wrong, but I'm quietly confident for now...

...damn! now I've cursed it  ;D

Just a quick update for now on the legs- I fleshed out the armature with air drying clay over a layer of pva glue, then rolled out sheets of green stuff and applied it over the top before sculpting and pressing in the details.

I'm not too happy with the join between the metal feet and my sculpted legs, and after sleeping on it I remembered that during the late 1500s (when most of my games are set) cock-fighting was a thing in rural Japan.  While prosthetic spurs were not commonplace, they did exist, and would be the perfect strappy item to conceal the joins and mask the differing textures... more on that solution later

Nice legs! ;)

This is going to be a great model. Have you put any thought into colours or how you’re going to photograph it?

A Ghibli style mountain back drop would work well (think Howls Moving Castle)  8)

cheers

Thanks for the support guys 👍

I hadn't even started considering hot to photograph it yet- it'll be FAR too big for my normal gaming table backdrop, I do like the thought of a Ghibli backdrop, either Howl or Mononoke would work well if I can find a good scene and a big printer.  Gives me an excuse to watch some great films anyway  ;)

A couple of plastic GW scythe blades from a skeleton something or other and a bit more green stuff equals quick and simple prosthetic spurs 💪 and a 'square' of plastic with a couple of magnets to help locate it into the building's base.

How to base a 'miniature' of this magnitude? I found an old Teflon coated saucepan in my shed which was around the right diameter, and poured a layer of dental plaster into the bottom of it.  While the plaster was still wet I pushed a sheet of Hessian sack cloth into it to provide some reinforcement.  When the plaster had cured for a couple of days I popped it out, filled and sanded any imperfections and proceeded to texture it. Since it had more real estate than most bases I went a little coarser than normal, using a mixture of sands, gravels dried crumbled earth and a LOAD of superglue to fuse everything together.

I just need to beaten up the joint between the legs and the building then I think I'm ready for undercoat  8)

A creature that big would leave really deep footprints!

A creature that big would leave really deep footprints!

Luckily the base isn't big enough to squeeze in any footprints #phew!#
Or my excuse could be that a mystical magical creature such as this leaves no impression, no sign of its presence, not even bending blades of grass under its feet...

Aside from additional parts which'll be added as the paint job progresses I think I'm about done on the build part of this.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/20180206_150155_zpshqrhw8xc.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/20180206_150155_zpshqrhw8xc.jpg.html)

A few hitherto unseen details- the tattered noren curtain, tanuki statue and lantern bracket.

A couple of wara ningyo charms which'll be nailed to the top storey for protection against curses and spells...

And I guess that's my last photo in this thread for now, measuring in at 'big' inches high, this is easily the biggest thing I've ever attempted, let's see how the painting goes 👋

Do the legs connect with the 'square' or is there a, for a lack of a better word, crotch area underneath the 'square'?

They just abruptly stop and join the building.  I toyed with a few options:

Crotch
Legs breaking out of the wooden structure
Abrupt joint

And after looking at loads of versions of chicken legged huts they mostly just connect to the building's abruptly, so I went with that version.  I might add some bits here and there to disguise the joints during the painting stage though

I think the 'magic/reasoning' behind it is that the two elements are just joined together so it doesn't have to be anthropomorphic, if that makes sense  :?

An image upload problem is ongoing, but is being tackled; BUT due to this issue I decided to extend the deadline by a week, so you have a little more time.

I take it you have noticed there’s an extra weeks grace? Just in case that helps.....

I'm going to be in Japan away from my modelling gear unfortunately, otherwise it would've been the perfect amount of time to finish it off. Never mind though, I'm still pretty happy with it  :)
