Not the bloke on Dr Who, but the master of terrain, Alan Sheward, whose Stalingrad build project posted here inspired us all. Anyway, I have long wanted to do some urban fighting in Stalingrad and, failing driving to Al's house for a bit of breaking and entry, the only way I'll achieve it is to build my own stuff. The first step in the process is now on Lard Island News where I do a trial run on one building to try to learn a few lessons to help me get the rest of them right.

Here's a few snaps.

The plan is to have the table ready in time for Salute where we will be running a couple of games in the Lard Zone. It is slightly frightening to try to copy a master like Al, I feel like Nosher Powell trying to imitate Rembrandt, but I'll do my best...

Go for it Nosher , I,ll be checking back on this thread .
-
Good start Rich.
-
Looking forward to the completion of this project....can't wait to see this in a few games!

As much as I’m enjoying following the terrain building, I’m eagerly awaiting publication of the pint-sized campaigns. Can’t wait!

Nice! A thread to watch.
Richard, if you are looking for some variety to those MDF buildings you might want to check out Battlefield Accessories range. A number of bombed out apartment and factory buildings that were originally designed for a Stalingrad game at Little Wars in Oz. Mikes's buildings are usually well designed and quite cheap although the postage to the UK might hurt.

Thanks for your kind words chaps. Hoping to get more done today unless the missus comes up with some absurd jobs for me to do. Which wouldn't be surprising...
Carlos. Nice link; thanks. There are some lovely ideas on that web site, even if I don't buy any I will probably copy some of the detail work on those models.
Cheers

I am looking forward to this.
I am also thinking of trying to do something inspired by Alan's amazing Stalingrad table.
Which Polish company did you use?

Heartily seconded! Right where did I stash those assault pioneers.......

Great blog Rich, watching avidly and hoping to steel hints and tips for a build for Chechnya

Well, the missus had a headache all day so I did manage to escape her evil clutches and get a bit more done. You can see more here with a bit of a report on what I did: http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=7226
More snaps to tempt:

I still feel like I am doing nothing more than to parody Al's work in a rather tawdry manner, but I am hoping that I can get it to come right in the end.

That looks very good.
-
Coming along nicely I’d say.
-
I particularly liked that you literally burnt the wood of the floorboards. Realism taken to the next level. :D
Looks really good. You can't have too much rubble, considering what the Luftwaffe made of the place, so parts of the building being impassable due to big piles of it makes perfect sense.

Loving watching this come together!

Morning boys and girls,
Another update.

I'm not exactly happy at this stage, some pretty stupid errors made, but hopefully I can still pull it all together as I go into the detailing section next.
Snaps:

I'm glad this is for Salute as this is NOT a fast process. Or pleasant.

From the forum photographs I could not tell if they cladding was flat or textured (from the blog post it appears to be flat).
The finished walls look good, but I do agree the lintels look a bit large.
I look forward to seeing this at Salute.
-
very good indeed
-
Well the proof of any such construction surely must be in the resulting pudding ...as it were! Looks pretty good to me ....even if the undercoated rubble is causing me chocolate cake cravings?
-
Looking good I reckon.
-
Looks good to me.
Did the original MDF building help, or have you added so much stuff you could have built this without it?
-
Fred
If I were Al, I would not need the reassurance of the MDF. But I'm not. The MDF was a HUGE help.
I'm not a great modeller, but I hope to get a decent end result due to copying techniques. The very thought of building this alone would horrify me.

That's useful to hear. I wondered after you have added so much to the basic frame, whether you still thought the MDF building helped. I can understand having a good solid starting point lets you add the various cladding to give the interesting textures and colours, without having to worry about the basic 'box' staying together.
-
I've done something very similar. Cutting all the windows is a bit tedious!
-
I think it looks quite reasonable. The size of the lintels/sills aside my only niggle is the disparity in size between the bricks in the rubble and those in the wall covering, it rather diminishes the effect of both IMO.
-
I think it looks amazing. You are being to hard on yourself. I am certainly taking notes and stealing what I can for a planned Grozny table.
