Title: Corso's Punic Wars
Post by: Corso on January 07, 2018, 07:00:57 PM
An attempt to stop acting like a butterfly and do an army properly. :D

My aim is to do a Carthaginian army for Hail Caesar. I had tried to do it time ago, but without much enthusiasm.  Focusing on a single project is not easy for me, I get easily distracted.

However, I rekindled my interest in the punic wars last summer. During a heat wave in August I joined a trekking group, and crawling on hands and knees reached Carthaginian remains in a cliffside area known as Ras ir-Raħeb. It is an abandoned building where statues of Tanith and Melqart were found years ago and with stunning sunset views (Pict 1).  It wasn’t hard to imagine carthaginian vessels in the sea, priests in the temple of Melqart and so on.

Besides, this year marks the 22century anniversary of the conquest of Malta by the Romans at the start of the second punic war 218BC.

On the hobby side, a Carthaginian army is a diverse force, with troops from across the western Mediterranean and beyond– I won’t be bored doing such an eclectic army.

So I started with a bang – a war elephant. My wife gave me the kit as a birthday present and spent days on it. It was fun to do, though it wasn’t easy because I had to attach the LBMS transfers before painting. For basing I used local fields as a reference beside Tunisian and Sardinian landscapes.

That is just fantastic!

It certainly helps when you visit places associated with the army you're building. Very inspiring pictures.

Really! Visiting historical places triggers your imagination and help you enter into the atmosphere!
Your painting is awesome, very well done! Good luck to your project!

That's a lovely model, and I feel the same about the diverse nature of the Carthaginian forces. Is the pattern on the howdah cloth painted on or is that a transfer as well?
Either way along with the basing it sets the figure off a treat :)

Great model. I just finished mine yesterday. Pictures to come shortly, but I am still strugling to find a replacement for photobucket.

All the best with your Carthaginian army.

Wow, Corso, fantastic elephant. Really nice paint job.

did you say that you're building a Hail Caesar army.... and you're not done yet???? :D

Seriously, that's an undertaking. But from the looks of the first piece, it should be a beautiful project.

Focusing on a single project is not easy for me, I get easily distracted.

I know how you feel, brother, I know how you feel...

Thanks for the feedback guys 8)

Richard - Yes, HC requires a lot of miniatures but it's a great game to play so well worth the effort. Especially from a butterfly like myself lol

Erik - looking forward for your nelly

Jeff - the howdah tabard is a transfer too

Dinthedin/Irregular Wars - such places are great for inspiration. It wasn't easy for that ruins, heatwave at 40C+ and the return was on my own since the trekking group went elsewhere and I had to find the way back before complete darkness (no electric light in that area) - utter madness lol :D

That is a fantastic first model for your Carthaginian army, the colours are very vibrant.  Also a nice touch to use the local colours on your model's base.

I look forward to seeing more as my wargaming buddy is also building a Carthaginian army to match my Republican Roman one, also set in mind with Hail Ceasar.

You can't go wrong with the Victrix Punic war models and with the Gauls just about to arrive you have started at the perfect time.

Nice job with the elephant.
I am not going to try to match you with a rival army as I could never focus on one project for long enough.  :D

If you want more inspiring scenery during heat waves you can join us on fieldwork in July; only trouble is you'll be going the opposite direction: it's a Roman site.  >:D

First there was one, now there are two! Second elephant ready - this time moved the shields a bit up not to obscure the howdah designs. Did the same with the first elephant.

Numidian horsemen next.....

Wow, love your two elephants.
Have always loved this period.
Many times I have started painting this period,
only to sell off the figures for one reason or another.
In fact I have a number of Victrix boxes put away.
Am about to go to Victrix's web site to see what is new.

Marine0846 - go for it mate!

Unit of numidian cavalry ready. Went for a darker skin than their libyan counterparts.

Not much happy with how the horse's eyes turned out - they look like they're shocked! Any suggestions how to make them better?

Hi! Your Numidians are great!
From the pictures one can't tell much about the horses' eyes, I suppose you made the pupils too small.

Here are plenty of examples of horse eyes, the white usually shows as a small part of the whole area. If not at all.
https://www.google.gr/search?q=horse+eye&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiNyfi-_ozZAhXnhaYKHcwVCFwQ7AkIPw&biw=1600&bih=783#imgrc=_

And here is a beautiful pastel painting demo, although different technique, I think it has also a lot to offer to a figure painter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_5uejo0thA
And another one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vB6wxw_qXc

According to my opinion the solution is to paint the pupils bigger.
Watching the progress of your project with great interest. Cheers!

I agree with Din. Horses pupils cover almost all the visible part of the eyeball, so I don't bother with painting any white.  I love the Numidian cavalry, lots of colour and plenty of dash in those poses.  Great minis.   :-* :-*

I paint the horses eyes all black then add a very small dot of white at the rear corners, the smaller the better.

Cheers

I only know the Relic Miniatures Hannibal:

Mounted (https://www.relicminiatures.com/product/hannibal/)

Elephant vignette (https://www.relicminiatures.com/product/hannibal-vignette/)
I will be at Trumpeter's in Vancouver in a couple of weeks; if Relic is there I could grab you one. :D

You don't do things by half, do you? At least one big unit per month is quite a tally. Keep it up!
Adding some WIP pics would be nice, so we know what comes next? I like such previews.

As an aside, it's actually the 2200th anniversary of the war between Eumenes II of Pontos and Pharnakes I of Pergamon in 182 BC. Sorry. lol

Might I ask (and sorry if I missed it) why the LBM transfer had to go on before painting began?

Codsticker - very kind of you.  :D

MDMorris - good idea about wip pictures, I tend to forget to do so.

Oshiro - I find it best to do the transfers on the elephants before painting the rest of the mini because when I do so the parts with transfers would still be in the sprue and I can manage better. I do the same with the shields. As a base for the decals I give the area three light coats of ceramite white from gw.

Same here. Made many friendships there.

WIP on heavy cavalry, using Victrix greek heavies and converting them. Whilst assembling them on single bases you must be careful about the second rank not to bump into the first rank due to the tail. I've used ceramite white as undercoat instead of spray because I am 'recycling' some horses from another unit and had done them with that undercoat and was afraid colours might show different if I used Corax white.

Thanks for the feedback!

Finished the general's command base, representing Hannibal and his entourage at Zama. The models are all victrix plastics kit-bashed. For Hannibal added an eye-patch out of green stuff.

From left to right, facing front:
1 - a Numidian, faithful servant of Hannibal (inspired by Khalid, servant of Gordon, from the movie Khartoum)
2 - a Magna Greek/Sicilian Greek exile
3 - a Carthaginian noble, standard bearer/representative of the Carthaginian senate (don't know if white lions existed in Africa - I went for aesthetics here)
4 - Hannibal himself
5 - a Garamantian, attached with the staff
6 - a Mauri, risen through the ranks
7 - a Libyan veteran, wearing italian armour similar to the ksour es sef cuirass

Maybe I'll write some background for them...........

A small unit of Mauri archers, part of the first line (or the skirmishing line in front of it) at Zama. Used victrix greek archers with numidian heads. The skin tone is a bit different from what I used for the numidians. For clothing went for a pale yellow. Don't know if they wore that colour but contrasts nicely with the dark skin.
