I have been painting Victrix Carthaginians for quite some time now. Always one box each summer during our holiday. I never had any plan for it. I just really liked the models. Last year I found "To the Strongest" rule, and really liked it. I suddenly realised that I actually had enough Carthaginians and Spaniards to plan with. The Carthaginians had to take on my old Galic army, as I had no Republican Romans at the time. Now I NEEDED elephants, but I wanted the Victirx ones, which they had promised for some time. Finally just before Christmas they came out, and they were really worth the wait.
I painted them using the transfers by LBMS, and as with the shield transfers they look smashing (in my humble view).

Can't see the pics at work but will check tomorrow!
-
Very well done. :-* :-*
-
Woah! They look sweet!
-
Fantastic! :o
-
Wow! Just, wow! :o!
-
Great work Erik :-*
I see you moved the shields a bit upwards so that the tower design could be properly seen - I think I'll move mine the same way.
-
Smashing!
-
Lovely work.
-
Great work, happy to see posts of these fairly new kits so quickly.
-
Fantastic painting. Can't wait to see more of your army.
-
Very nice! What size base do you have them on?
-
They look awesome. The bases look really nice.
But now you have to show us the rest of your Carthaginian army.
-
Impressive
-
Thank you for all the nice comments.
Its true I moved the shiels up a bit. The transfer does have room for something there, but not the shield. Its still to big and would cover the nice Pictures. I think these transfers are way to fine to just cover up with a shield.
The elephant is mounted on a 6X8 cm base. Most of my infantry is mounted on 6x4, so it matches them.
I will post some Pictures of more of my carthaginian stuff soon.

Beautiful, simply beautiful.

They look awesome!

Its been awhile since I posted the pictures of my war elephants, but it doesn't mean that my Carthaginian army has been completely forgotten. I just haven't put any pictures of my progress on LAF. In order to make up for this here is a large block of greek hoplites that I have been working on and of for quite some time. It's an entire Victrix box of 48 hoplites. I usually use them in blocks of 24 but they look awesome in a large 48 block.
I don't have plans for a hoplites army any time soon so at the moment they serve as mercenaries in my Punic army. I might expand them into a Syracuse army using all the new Victrix greek cavalry and maybe one more box of hoplites, but that all in the future. I think that one of the really great things about a Carthaginian army, that it can serve as a springboard for lots of other armies as it is so diverse.

More Carthaginian veterans and citizen infantry on the way

Nice phalanx. I completely agree about the Carhaginians. Not only do they have the coolest troops but so many different types. The problem is that you don't ever stop collecting them. :D
-
Gotta love them Phanties!
:-*

Great work. Massive blocks of infantry really looks awesome.
I thought you were on a strickt painting schedule and only painted crusaders. Have you cheated with these guys?

I am and yes it's a bit cheating. The miniatures were painted some time ago, but a hadn't done the shields or the bases. I have been doing a little here and there in between our Danish crusader project.

After some time away from painting medieval miniatures from various periods I am back with my punic war miniatures. It was a god game of Too the Strongest that got me going again. That and of course the mega nice new fanatics from Victrix. As always the paint up easy and nice and the shield transfers look fabulously.
I have another unit on the way. Combined with these guys my old gallic army will be ready to join the fight both on its own or as allies the others.

These guys are impressive! :o :-*
They really give the impression of a berserk charge! You'll need more of them for sure ;D
-
Very cool looking unit.
Looks like someone did an awesome job of airbrushing the base colors. ;)
-
Excellent painting. I have these on order so it's nice to get some inspiration for when they arrive.
-
Glad to be of help Hu Rhu. As Dr. Zombie said, this is really all up to airbrushing and washing. He is referring to the fact that my airbrush is broken at the moment and he was kind enough to base color my celts. What he should be crediting himself for however is that he insisted on me putting fore miniatures pr. base instead of three as I had initially planned. As DintheDin wrote they truly look like a beserker wave when ranked up so close.

I'm glad that my comment probably tipped the scales for 4 minis per base!
For many years I was playing DBM.
Gallic warriors (15mm) had two basings, the Warbands fast with 3 warriors per base (4x2cm) and the Warbands Ordinary and Superior with 4 minis per base (4x1.5cm).
I myself have painted these warriors, I've put them 4 per base and they look like a terrifying berserker wave!!!
Keep up the good job! Cheers!

Great looking band of warriors. Was it cold when you painted them lol

Excellent paint job on the fanatics.
I've just started on Gallic fanatics myself!
I'm wondering about the hair colour?
I believe they brushed lime into the hair in order for it to stand up and go spikey?
How would this affect the actual colour, if at all?
Is it just like clear hair gel you can use today, or would it go white?
Just asking ???
-

I believe it went white or a close variation.
-
Interesting that you ask now. I'm painting Gauls myself and was just searching trying to find some photographic evidence from Gallic reenactors. Seems like most of the reenactors want to be Romans - don't know why. I only found a couple of photos and the ones I saw looked like gray hair, but just on the tips of the hair with the base color still showing. Kind of like a bleach blond a couple of weeks after the bleaching. But, I'd really like to have more info....
-
Popular book on celt depicts their haircolor as grey, so thats what I went for. The beards should ofcourse be a differet color, as I dont think they were spiky as well. I did'nt get that untill I was half way through the unit, so many of them have grey beards as well.
Thye second unit is ready and I hope to have pictures in a couple of days.
Cheers

I believe it went white or a close variation.
I'm of the same opinion, I made an off-white going to grey, but I made them in 15mm. In 28mm they probably need more detail.
-
Limewater would have bleached and lightened the user's hair, as well as making it coarse and stiff. Similar effects also could have been obtained by using chalk.
-
So, what are we going for guys,
Grey,
Off white,
Hair colour but lighter,
Any other suggestions?
My thoughts are standard Celtic fair hair, reds, etc but dry brushed almost white on the tips?

I like that idea. I might just follow suit.
-

I agree.
I have some Celts to paint for OGAM sooner or later and may well do just that.
:)
-
Love your figures.
A mighty fine looking army.
-
I was considering posting a picture of my fanatics, but then we'd be comparing our little naked men!
lol
-
Thank you for all the nice comments and I agree with Tim. Lets not!! lol
Here are pictures of the last unit I bought. I have deliberately not painted any with tattoos to see how that looked. I must admit I miss it a bit, so in the future, I think around a third will look good. Both units are painted using Vallejos air 72.769 Flesh (courtesy of Dr. Zombie) with Army Painter flesh wash. No highlights. A very easy, fast and in my opinion good result that allowed me to get this unit from the sprues to finished and based in one week! For my painting speed that is very fast.

I used two different settings on the camera to see what looked best. That why the pictures look a bit different.

Your fanatics look fantastic!

As mentioned earlier in this thread I wanted some greek light cavalry. Last week I finished them, so here are the pictures. I thought the shields pointed more towards heavier cavalry so I based half of them closer than I normally do. This way they can double as light and medium cavalry. The other half was based more loosely and I found some leftover bucklers from my Spanish cavalry.
First up the light/medium cavalry

And then the light cavalry with bucklers

I have also finished some commanders. Carthaginian, Roman, Numidian and Gallic. Except for the druid they are all from 1. Corps. I can't remember where the druid is from.

Wow, some fantastic work there. And to have completed a 28mm unit to that standard in a week is very impressive!
-
Super read, great thread, full of loads of inspiration. :)
-
Nice commander vignettes, but the light cavalry steals the show! All are well painted and I mostly like how you did the shields and bucklers! Also your horses are very well done, impressive in their full gallop! Great!
-
Terrific work, and a pleasure to look at.
-
They look amazing.
I can’t wait to kill them.

This summers project for my Punic Wars armies was a box of Victrix unarmored Greek Hoplites. I have had my eyes on these since they came out, so it was nice to finally get to grips with them. The box gives you enough miniatures for 48 hoplites and 8 archers. I think they will end up in two unit of 24, but a massive 48 since unit does have a nice fell to it. As always the models are very well sculpted and easily assembled. Painting was easy and with the beautiful transfers its hard to not end up with a cool looking unit.
At the moment I now have 96 hoplites and some light cavalry and skirmishers. Not enough fore a full Greek army, but as this is the Punic Wars, Syracuse is a more obvious option. That being said I absolutely love hoplites, so I might do another box next summer. Problem is the Romans really need some backup.
Here are a lot of pictures of the hoplites in different formations.

Very nice work. An impressive looking collection.
-
That's interesting. I've never been able to find any info on the arms and armours of the greeks during the punic wars (only on the macedonians, and I think it's more of a best guess than based on solid archaeological/historical proof). Where did you find it?
-
such an awesome collection !!
-
Looks great!
They are an intimidating bunch!
-
Thanks chaps.
I am afraid I must admit to not having done any research on Greek arm and armour during the Punic Wars. Unless of course armylist from wargames count lol.

Another year and another box of Victrix miniatures are ready to join my Punic Wars armies. This year I went for the Samnites. These guys can fight for just about everyone including themselves. I have based them five to a base instead of my usual six. I want them to have the image of being in a more loose formation, than their Roman and Punic adversaries. A bag of unarmored and a bag of armored Samnites gave me enough for 10 bases (two Roman velites joined in as well).
Their first job will be fighting on their own in DBA which is my main thing at the moment. Later I will probably use them to form an Italian allied division in Hail Caesar. As I wrote earlier my Romans need reinforcement so these guys will do just fine.
