My 'ill-advised' entry for the the Build Something contest will be another modular section for my 40K Space Hulk layout- a spaceship research station housing very dangerous plants (what could go wrong?). I'll be using Rogue Trader for some ideas on plants. I've just completed an extensive alien jungle for the regular table top so I may as well tie this in.
The working title is 'Laboratorium Malum Plantae', although I'll admit to knowing almost nothing about Latin- so if anyone has a better suggestion, please feel free to chime in. The 40K 'High Gothic' language is a pseudo-Latin mishmash, so if it ends up sounding like a room in Hogwart's- that's okay :)
I don't have anything to show as of yet as I'm still trying to decide on layout of the section(s). I've had some clear plastic domes in the bits stash for a couple years and a large part of the build will be Hirst Arts castings so it fits the rest of the hulk.

Good idea...
-
Very cool - I'll be plagiarising this, I think :D :D
-
Looking forward to this based on last year's entry.
-
So far not a lot of progress. I did get around to laying out the section, so that I had an idea of how many Hirst Arts components I might need.

I have a few ideas for some 'focal points' or little scenic features, however I haven't quite decided on how I want to integrate them into the section to allow for movement. I may end up making some removable elements that fit in as seamlessly as possible.
This section is ridiculously large but I wanted to include at least three domes housing plant terrariums and a little research station with some smaller domes. I picked up a little scribe station from Shapeways and I also want to have some bookcases- I designed those in Tinkercad, had them printed via Shapeways, made some silicone molds, and cast them in resin.
-
What about putting some famous(?) plants in those plastic domes? Maybe The Little Shop of Horrors plant, Triffids or Groot? Looking forward to this after your escape pod section last year!
-
Great to see Space Hulk getting some love again.

I like this idea. I second it so it must be done ;)
-
Oh my, looking forward to more of this. 8) 8) 8)
-
And another joins the queue to drool over this as you proceed.
:D

That is a good idea; I was thinking of doing a larger open room with some bigger containers in them (another section) and Groot would be a good choice for that. I had considered an Audrey II after seeing her show up on GWs Sly Marbo base ;)
I haven't seen Triffids- it's a classic, so perhaps I'll do that :)
-
So would this board link up to last year's? If so I REALLY want to see that gaming surface once done! 8) 8) 8)

I haven't managed to put in as much time as I intended at this point. I'm hoping to get in some good build time tomorrow.

The section outline has been cut out, and some Hirst Arts tiles glued down. I ordered some doors and frames from Armorcast (which arrived faster than expected) so I hope to get those installed soon. They allow removal of the doors, and more importantly, they're resin- so they will be more durable for handling purposes.
The raised terrarium area has been started as well- I've glued a 'ring' made from soft 'craft foam' around the perimeter of the domes to help integrate them visually.
I also modified two of the cast tiles and cut a hole in the section so that I can make a grate that has been pushed aside with a void beyond.
-
Nice - and that grating has tonnes of potential 8) 8) 8)

Sorry, I forgot to answer this question. This section will have four exits that will be compatible with the rest of the space hulk layout. I think I'm going to alter the color a bit though.
-
Looking good so far.

A few 'gardening tools' scattered about would be a nice touch. And maybe a couple of slugs....
;)

I'll see if I can work 'em in ;)
I made some good progress today, developed the section border, and built some tabletops for the work station. I'm probably going to use a ready made sink and table surface from Antenociti.

I wasn't using my brain when I made the rings for the terrariums- there was a seam that I could have positioned in a less conspicuous spot. I hadn't decided at that point to cut some sections away for climate control apparatus, and those could have also been aligned with seams. Oh well, that's what filler is for I guess.

Ahh, the things we see when we are half-built. Almost makes you wish you had a timemachine to go back and "fix" them.
-
Nice looking build Matt! Love the way your laying out the details of the controls and pipes.
-
I’ve never been a fan of the Hirst Arts Stuff, but you really are changing my mind about that! So we’ll placed, they work sooo well! 8)
I think I may have asked this before, but I can’t find it, are they bought pieces or did you get the mounds and do it yourself?
-
Loving all the detailing!
:-* :-*

this is coming along really nicely mate, I especially like the cut out floor panel, lovely detail
-
Thanks all. Still a long way to go!

I own a couple dozen Hirst molds, so I'm doing the casting. I've been using them more or less since he started business- I think he maybe had around six molds available when I got into it. Plus A few years ago I did some miniature painting for Bruce Hirst and he paid me in molds :)
I have made a few molds of my own as well- the two bookcases are objects that I designed in Tinkercad and then sent to Shapeways for printing. I then proceeded to cast them in resin, with the idea that I would be making a big library someday. I recently designed some 2" tiles that match the new Necromunda boards fairly close, and have been casting those up too.
-
I really like how this is progressing! :-* :-*
-
Wow, lots of nice detail on this one. :-*
-
Found a little time to work on some details. I made two little cabinets (one is locked- that's where the anti-plant spray is kept ;) ) and some other 40k-ish doodads that adepts need around.

Some of the plant life is being placed- these are going to be dried up and dead with some desiccated leaves added later. They are castings of some little berry/seed things I plucked off a plant and replicated with a silicone mold.
The door frames are installed, as you can see the top is removable and the door can slide out. The top has little pegs that hold it in place, which may need removal and replacement with a longer pin.

I'm getting to the point where I'm probably going to have to start painting, so there might not be a whole lot of action in this thread after this update :)

Where is the drooling emoticon when you need it? :o 8) :-*

I may have to look up that Hirst Arts mould as those sections that you are using around the edges look rather useful.

The borders/edges are 'Industrial Edge Mold' #325.

An image upload problem is ongoing, but is being tackled; BUT due to this issue I decided to extend the deadline by a week, so you have a little more time.
-
Okay, thanks for the heads-up.
I just sent my image in to the updated address.

No fair holding out... where is the image? Or are they all going in one new thread?

The painted images will only be revealed in the voting phase - the competition building time ends Sunday, I'll probably give a few days to finish paint jobs, and then I'll set up voting threads.
I promise it'll be worth the wait, the ones I've seen so far are all gorgeous 8) 8) 8)

Absolutely lovely :-*. I love all the little details. What a great addition to your SpaceHulk boards.
-
A wonderful end result.
:-* :-*
Waiting with baited breath for the forthcoming close-up shots showing all of the details.
:D
-
I’m still waiting for the full-board shots, with last years entry, this and the rest! :(

Full board shot went into my Space Hulk thread- looks like you saw it :)

I haven't done a bunch of detail images yet, those will show up after the run of the contest.

You will have to forgive Andy, but his mind has been reset by his latest project and may not be functioning in the same way these days....
;)
-
To be fair the full board isn't very impressive, I had to zoom out pretty far to get the whole layout in the frame :)

Ok....ok....I’m old and senile, but I’m still coming around to yours for a shot on that! ;)
