Hello everyone, I am returning to the miniatures hobby after a 10 year hiatus. I've lurk'd for some time on this forum and have been so inspired by many of the wonderful creations you all post here. I've decided to create my own thread to share my progress, and, perhaps, inspire others in turn.
My warband consists of a human wizard and apprentice with a gang of mercenary dwarves. Why hire dwarves instead of humans, you ask? Perhaps their steadfast nature, affinity for treasure hunting, or ability to fit into narrow underground passages... Or perhaps because I just own a lot of old Rackham dwarves!

Kelt Sessairs Shaman as my wizard's apprentice! This was my first attempt at object source lighting. I think it came out a little dark, but not bad.

8) way cool!!!

marvellous figures enhanced by superb painting :-*
-
Beautiful paint job.
-
Thank you for the kind words!
-
Very nice work!

A couple of new additions: Warhounds! These were fun and quick to paint as they don't require a lot of colors. I used them as an opportunity to try out some new basing material, and some new paints & additives. They're actually a friend's models so they might be going in his warband, not mine.

again, what brilliant sculpts and painting.
-
This makes me want to work on my Confrontation figures.
I didn’t realize how grotesque are the non-human races compared to humans within the Rackham range.
-
Wow! Exquisite painting!

They really are! The Confrontation dwarves are especially unique looking with regards to other fantasy dwarves, I think.

A new addition arrives! He has somewhat a mystical/druidic thing going on what with the bark totem and what appears to be an animated stone boar companion. I was thinking he'd make a good apothecary. I was uneasy about bright green as the dominant color to the point of almost changing it entirely, but my desire to not do extra work triumphed over my indecisiveness. I think it turned out OK. Pretty happy with the contrast on this one.

Something a little different from my other models, a purple horror for a minor demon! Painted it up Sunday afternoon during a session with a friend, so it has a simpler paint job than my dwarves, but I quite like how it turned out. These old GW figures are pretty fun and characterful.

I have this figure too, and I'm quite fond of the colours you've chosen.

Glad you like it! I didn't like the color scheme of the Rackham studio model, so I tried to pick colors that I thought fit it better.
-
It's been a while, but I've still been working on things. Today I present three thugs, one of which has gotten a nasty face burn(elemental bolt?!). They're converted dwarf wreckers. While painting these I've discovered I struggle to paint hair, and am currently trying to solve this riddle. Regardless, they were a lot of fun. I went for a more drab color scheme to make some implication of their status as lowly foot soldiers.

This guy^ in particular had a very strangely sculpted and difficult beard to paint. I tried many diffrent approaches but eventually gave up. I may be revisiting this beard at a future date.

:) very nice...especially dig the metal on the weapons!!!

Awesome figs and paint jobs! This is a classically cool warband for G.A....

Those faces are amazing though!
-
Thanks! I have been making a lot of progress on painting faces and skin lately.
-
Some lovely painting of some very strange figures. Your skin tones and metal effects are particularly good.
-
Metternich +1.. man, you have grasped some mad skillz and very peculiar figures.... both, very cool.
-
those dorfs look amazing... if you need more: confrontation will be up on kickstarter somewhen this month ;)
-
This is excellent painting on superb sculpts! :o

Really? HMMM... Thanks for the tip! I had heard about this Confrontation Resurrection game allegedly in the works, and noticed that Cadwallon recently stopped selling the old minis. Glad there will still be a way to get them! Looking forward to some new models as well!
-
It's been a while since I shared anything here, I've been working on some non-Frostgrave minis I got at Adepticon a little over a week ago. I'll be back at it soon, but in the mean time here are some photos of previously unshared Frostgrave bits!
Treasure tokens! Mostly repurposed from old Mordheim stuff.

Some Confrontation figures that were missing parts became living statues! What will my wizard think when he encounters a statue of himself, I wonder?

Bonus Barbarian! Not sure what this guy's future is. The base might need a little more... something.

Love those statues!
-
Lovely work on those old Conf figures...not long 'til they're re-released.
-
Made some furniture out of polymer clay for the ulterior motives deck this week. I went ahead and made 3 more statues to complete the set as well. From left to right: Stone arch/gateway, trap door, sarcophagus, arcane disc, well, pit, statues, runic stone, and skeleton (found him like that in a box, just gave him a new base).

:o wow great work!!!
-
A new dorf! He still needs a little snow on his base, but I didn't want to wait to share. I plan to use him as a second crossbowman. I've been trying to work on my speed and not be too much of a perfectionist, and in that regard I'm pretty happy with this piece. It took about 3 sessions to complete. I decided on a whim to do an object source light on his backpack, which admittedly is not something I'm great at yet, but I think it turned out passable.
Thanks to everyone for the kind comments in this thread, they really help motivate me to keep painting things and getting better.
Happy Frostgravery!

Very nice work - love the tattoo!

what fine work indeed.

Thanks! I also love that detail, it's actually sculpted on the model.
-
This guy was a bit of a departure from the rest of the dwarves. Seeing as the model is called 'Magnus the Mystical' I decided to try painting him up in some nice bright high fantasy colors. It was a good exercise in NMM, fun to try a stab at the Rackham style. I'm thinking it might be time to take a group pic of my ever expanding warband of dwarves, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. Until then cheers and happy Frostgravery!

He looks amazing. You're right, a group shot is definitely in order!
-
I have to comment again... dang.. I love that style of painting and those figures are pretty dang cool too!
-
I finally managed to take a group shot. I have a lot more dwarves I'd like to paint up and add to the gang, but I'm currently painting a lot of Skaven for general fantasy gaming purposes, and a piece for a painting contest, so new recruits are a few weeks out most likely.

I've been making an effort to create some respectable terrain as well. I made this wire tree after watching some model railroad videos. Those guys are seriously amazing at miniature landscapes. I made a snowy mat (unpictured, I know) as well with a yard of canvas and acrylic paint, an idea I borrowed from Jennifer's Frostgrave thread.

Also a great use for those old CDs in the closet!

tree's looking ace.
figs brilliant.

Thanks, it really is surprising how convincing twisted wire with a couple coats of acrylic medium can look.

Recently I've been painting lots of Skaven, not spending more than a couple days working on each model, sometimes painting in small batches, all in an attempt to learn to paint faster. I was getting a little burnt out on that however, so this week I took a break and painted this female mage model for a friend. It's from Cadwallon's Legends of Signum game. A great choice for an Illusionist and impressive looking model once finished, but man, not easy to assemble!

There was a roleplay system which had their illusionists done up in a similar style. Like they were all a bit mental and with Illusion being the magic of controlling and abusing reality they looked like they were abusing their spells too much.
With Frostgrave you can use anything, and stuff like that's a great find. Do they already have an apprentice as well ...or is the Apprentice some misshapen blob who failed at their experiments (or succeeded)? :)
-
fantastic paint-job.
gorgeous colour.

There is no apprentice yet! I'm keeping an eye out for one. Playing Frostgrave has opened up a lot lot of model ranges from small companies and sculptors for me. So many cool wizards to choose from!
-
Can't have too many demons, right? I got this guy on a whim with a Hasslefree Miniatures order because I liked the model. This was another attempt to learn the famous "loaded brush" technique popularized by Ben Komets. I think I'm starting to get a feel for it now. My first attempt was a total failure, it was last year when I had just come back to the hobby and had not the skills or materials to succeed at something like this. My regular opponent plays a witch, so this guy will probably be springing from a bottle and wrecking me sometime soon, heh.

very skilled and painterly effect.

Agreed - great work sir.

Hey yall, I have here a Rackham wizard painted painted for a friend's warband. I thought I was going to paint this in one session, but it ended up taking three. Damn all these straps and flappy robes! It's a little messy but I'm proud of it nonetheless and glad to call it done. Looking forward to this guy in an upcoming Maze of Malcor campaign!
Cheers!

splendid figure - and your paint job appropriately evokes another Rackham- a certain Arthur! Lovely.
wish I'd been 'into' the Rackham stuff when it was current and relatively affordable.

I concur - brilliant!

Loving the colour combination on that wizard. Coupled with the extreme highlighting it gives a very suitable frosty feeling...

Yeah, they are prohibitively expensive these days, sadly. I was lucky to have bought many when the company was liquidated and the game stores were selling off all their products years ago.

I imagined this guy standing on a rocky outcrop with a blustering wind whipping his robes about. I'm glad that comes through! Thank you.
