Title: Zombie Hunting with Style *UPDATE 12 JULY 2012* New Red-Coats added
Post by: Pappa Midnight on April 20, 2009, 10:27:15 PM
I haven't painted any minis for months ( lots of real life hassel at the moment!!!) so I decided to blow the dust off my brushes and have a go at a couple.
Being quite partial to Zombies and VSF I thought I'd combine the two.

First up is a Victorian Zombie Hunter ( complete with steam assisted hunting rifle) in the form of Lady Sarah-Jane Fairfax. She's an Anima Tactics mini.

Obviously Lady Fairfax requires some "Sport" so I've started converting some Bluemoon Miniatures into Zombies.
Here's the first one I've finished.

More Zombies and Hunters to follow.... ;)

Very, very good, PM. The conversions are great, and they ooze Victorian period! Can't wait to see more!

Thank you all for the comments!  :)
I should have mentioned that Lady Fairfax is not a conversion but a straightforward Anima Tactics mini. She's a little tall compared to the Bluemoon stuff but I'm not overly concerned with accurate scaling for "game" pieces.
It seems an absolute age since I've painted or modelled anything. I really enjoyed doing these two and I have a number of suitable minis lined up for some VSF Zombie type mayhem.
I'm also trying to get my head around some 3D Paint programmes to create some Georgian/Victorian card buildings. I've seen some American type ones but nothing for Regency style terrace houses etc. Finding suitable source material without copyright issues is a problem.
I'll post my results as i go.

You might want to check out this book.  Don't let its title throw you.  The book's strength lies in its abundance of beautiful watercolour illustrations of the various styles of English architecture and construction methods, from about 1500 to 1900, with lots of floor plans.  There aren't a lot of samples of Georgian architecture, other than a couple of multi-storey homes, but there are a few more plans for Victorians.  There is a good number of Tudor and Stuart buildings shown, though, as well as some cottages.  It's one of those books than I treasure for its simple beauty as well as the information it contains.  Well worth the price.

Cheers Archangel1 for the tip about the book . I'll look out for it.

Just a quick pic off two more Zeds from my Bluemoon civillians.
The "Drunk" has had his bottle removed and replaced with a half-eaten head and the other one hasn't been modded at all ( she looked kind of zombie-like anyway!!!)

I'll hopefully get some more done at the weekend.

PM,

I love these figures. Please keep posting more pics  :-*

By the way, if you do get around to making some card buildings, I for one would be very interested in getting some PDFs if you were to make them available. I'd be happy to pay a contribution, as I need some 19thC British buildings for my upcoming "Torchwood 19thC" project, the idea for which I stole from another LAFer whose name I forget. Sorry  :(

I can't afford to buy resin etc and my scratchbuilding skills are dodgy at best, so card is the best thing for me.

Please keep us updated on any progress.

Cheers  :)

Post by: Pappa Midnight on June 11, 2009, 11:07:53 PM
Thought I'd post a couple more pictures of some Victorian stuff I've been working on.

I'm not sure how good the hansom cab would be in a zombie infested London ( my steam coach would be more practical) but I like the model. It's from Westwind and is a lovely little kit.

Next up is "Seamus O'Keefe" a gentleman's barber. Armed only with his trusty razors ( and sharp wit!) he is ready to take on he undead hordes....
"A little more off the top , Sir?

He's another Westwind mini with a razor made from plasticard.

I'll post some more Zombies and Survivors shortly.

Thanks for the comments!  :D

The hansom cab wasn't that bad to put together, although I must admit some of the casting lines were a little off and needed filing down. The reins were about the hardest thing to make although I don't know how they'll hold up to gaming!!

I've just completed  4 minis more for my collection: Two Zombies ( flower seller and tramp), Back-street brawler survivor and a Gentleman Monster Hunter who looks a little like a 20th century rock icon.......

The varnish is drying at the moment so I'll take few pics later today.

Post by: Pappa Midnight on June 14, 2009, 07:34:08 PM
Thanks again for the comments.

As promised some new Hunters and Zombies.

First up is an Ironclad Minis Conversion in the form of "Sir Presley King".
He's a Monster Hunter, Actor and Singer........ Long Live The King, Baby!

He's had a hat change, sunglasses added and a new arm.

Next up is a converted Bluemoon mini, the quiet and demure "Miss Lucy Thorne".
She comes equipped with a Portable Revenant Assault Machine (P.R.A.M.) It contains a phonograph which plays baby cries to attract Zombies and a gatling gun to deal with them when they turn up!

Finally for the Hunters is "Jack McKay"  a former Scotts Guards Sgt Major. He prefers to fight up close and personal. He's another Bluemoon Mini.

Not much point having Monster Hunters without some enemies so here's a couple more Zombies!!

The flower seller has had an arm change and the tramp is unconverted.

Hope you like them.

I've just realised one of the reasons why these zombies are so appealing. The blood effect is nicely restrained, almost to the point of being under-done. It's obvious what it is, but it isn't too graphic or garish. It looks like old, dead blood, rather than the usual "pumping arterial" stuff.

Lovely, if that is the right word  :?

Thank you for the comments. I try to make the blood look "Old" and don't actually use red, tending to go for GW Dark Flesh which is a nice red/brown colour.

Thank you for the comments. I try to make the blood look "Old" and don't actually use red, tending to go for GW Dark Flesh which is a nice red/brown colour.

I make my zombie blood similarly, thoughI use watered brown ink (with an extremely small amount of black) and mix in a little of what is called 'Watermelon Red' from a cheap acrylic paint line (Crafter's Acrylic)  I use for terrain painting. It has a different consistency to GW's stuff that gives the mix a 'redish' feel but also gives it that dry blood texture because the paint drys a little chalky regardless of how thin or thick the paint is. That gives it the coagulated texture for the dark brownish/redish dry blood on my zombies.

One time when I had a bit of excess of this mix, because I had to stop painting, I tipped the mixing pot right over my painting setup (without forethought I hasten to add) and it actually looked like a bad accident had occurred on my workbench. Should have seen how my mum reacted upon seeing that ghastly mess the next day when I was otherwise alluding her sight in the attempt to scare her (which is too easy as it is). And she's well aware of my frequency for hacking up my index finger while reshaping bits of plastic. I know, I'm terrible.

Can't wait for that chimney-sweep! There should be a Mary Poppins sized collection of those fellows.

I really pleased that my project is getting such positive interest, thanks guys.

Bako Ikaporamee: Sounds an interesting way for making blood. I might well give that a go. Cheers!!!

Thorbjørn Nielsen: I will probably stick to my own skirmish rules. The only things really era specific are the vehicle rules, which wouldn't require a huge ammount of tweaking for steam vehicles or horse-drawn carriages.
Hopefully I'll publish them one day.................

Next is a late Victorian Zombie Postman. He's a slightly converted Bluemoon mini.

More to follow.

I think we have one of those delivering our mail  :(

Great work - again! I love Mr Harper's stubble. Very subtle! He reminds me a little of James Cosmo, as a sort of 19thC Morris Gerald Cafferty from the Rebus novels/TV series. One of my favourite villains!

...and then send the rest of us pictures! I, for one, would love to see that game!

Great work as always, Pappa Midnight. The Zeds are great, but what's even better (at least in my humble opinion...) is the fact that your survivors and Zombie-hunters are drawn from every class, and every walk of life. It gives the whole project the depth and character that really puts it head and shoulders above most gaming projects, however well executed they may be. Speaking of which - the paint jobs and the bases are superb!

Looking forward to more, as always!

Thanks for the comments gents, it gives me a little push to keep going!!!

Malamute: I would love to. Maybe when I finally move (groan!!!) you could visit Chez Midnight...!

Hawkeye: You hit the nail on the head with my choice of minis. My way of thinking is that the "plague" would hit everyone so I'm trying to portray a cross-section of Victorian society. I also quite like the idea that the zombies retain a little of there former lives... Zombie "Gentlemen" tip their hats to a female survivor or try to flag down a cab, an undead flower seller offers you a bunch of flowers or a rotting organ grinders plays a tune as he shambles after you. I'm thinking of using this setting for an RPG aswell as a minis game.

Thanks again for all the positive comments.

A couple more minis added to my collection.

"Bardsley" is the First Footman of Sir Harcourt Rhymes. Always impeccably dressed and ready to do his Master's bidding. He hopes one day to rise the dizzying heights of Butler.

Do you remember the film Sean of the Dead? Early in the film I seem to remember the undead wandering about the street - I think one of them pushing a shopping trolley. So how about a zombie nanny using one of Eureka's nanarchists?  :D

Another two excellent additions to the project, Pappa Midnight! Those Blue Moon Victorian civilians are looking more and more tempting with each of your posts! I'm working on my Old West project, I want to follow it with a Pulp project, but now I'm seriously considering a VSF zombie project too! The Blue Moon minis would be top of my list, I think, and I love the idea of building some Victorian London terrain, so I'm looking forward to more inspiration from this wonderful project!
The wine-colour on the footman's uniform, by the way, is beautifully done.
Excellent stuff!

It was initially thought that the "Revenant" Virus was restricted just to the lower classes and that persons of good breeding would never contract such a terrible illness...........

What was even more disturbing was that having been shot four times at point blank range, the dead fellow not only stood back up but he retrieved his top hat and straightened his jacket...... Quote from Sir Harcourt Rhymes' journal September 18 1887

Thanks for the positive comments. :)
I'm having a great deal of fun "twisting" the Victorian era with a Zombie/Horror vibe, rather than the more traditional gothic horror ( vampires etc)

Mancha: I have a slightly warped mind ( and also a copy of Sir Harcourt Rhymes' journal....) :D

I thought "Zombie Virus" sounded too modern and as a "Revenant" is an animated corpse (folklore) I thought that it would fit the bill.

The Affinity Bridge has corpses animated by, I believe, the revenant curse.  And if you haven't read it already, I'm at the start of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and I thought of your project.  I don't think you have a vicar yet, do you?  That thought came to me whilst watching A Room With A View.

I love the extract from Sir Harcourt Rhymes' journal - the idea of the zombie straightening his jacket and retrieving his top hat is great. And of course the mini is excellent - really beautifully zombified.
I, too, have been infected by the 'Revenant virus', in that I've been turned onto all things zombie now as well. First some modern zombie stuff, and then some Pulp era zombie stuff. Yet another genre to hopelessly lose myself in, and all thanks to wonderful threads like this! Still resisting Victorian for the moment, though...

"The Bloody Flux" has a really horrible sound to it!!! cheers Karl!! :D
I'm afraid Sir Henry has been stricken with the Bloody Flux.........
Some of the more "old fashioned" doctors would probably put it down to "miasma" ( bad smells/air) and link the stench of an infected person with its spread.

I haven't heard of the Affinity Bridge, I'll keep a look out for it. You will have to tell me what you think of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I saw it on Amazon and wasn't too sure about it.
Vicar............ a bit of a must really!!! I think I have a mini in mind.

Thanks Hawkeye. I pretty much jump from one genre to another, but I thought Zombie Victorians would kill two birds with one stone!!!

Cheers

Hammer horror, but not at its best. The  Zombies are just reanimated corpses used by a land owner to strangle people and dig for riches I think. They are certainly not flesh eaters ala PM's vision. :?

First up is another Victorian gentleman...........His good breeding didn't save him from infection..

Next is the former barman at the "White Swan" public house

and finally what was Edgar Rice a Whitechapel blind beggar

They are all Westwind minis with slight conversions..
Hope you like them

Mancha: I agree that some look more "Zombied" than others, my excuse was that they were a little "Fresher".  :D
(Although that's a fair comment by Malamute about British Zombies not shambling!!!  lol )

Hawkeye: the one with the top hat is from the Westwind range ( either Gentlemen or Civillians..), he originally had a bowler hat but I made the top hat from greenstuff. He's also had an arm swap.

Anyhow, digging through my attic I found this photograph. It's from Sir Harcourt Rhymes' Journal and appears to show a Zombie infestation in Lambeth..............

Excellent photo! Clearly an important historical document, and the question is, how did it end up in your attic?

As for the guy in the top hat - I was thinking that the resemblance was to a real person, but an older version of him, perhaps, before he grew the (very impressive) lamb chops... Who could it be? Thanks, though, for identifying the model you used for the conversion!

Pappa I think you would enjoy a movie I just viewed this past weekend.
It is called I Sell The Dead.  The movie is centered on two Victorian Era
grave robbers who discover the undead.  And that the undead sell for a bit
more than normal corpses.  Very fun and unique movie and it seems to fit right in
with the theme that you are going for.

Thanks for the comments. I'm still only learning how to use PhotoShoppe properly.

Just a quick pic of a new "Survivor".
She is the mysterious Countess Morevna. Little is known about the Countess beyond her obvious wealth and her uncanny knowledge of the plague which has swept through London.......

....She bore all the hallmarks of a Lady, good breeding and all the trappings of her station. It still vexed me somewhat that she had little knowledge of her Mother Country and I can swear that her accent had changed since first we had met. But, she had asked for my assistance and as a gentleman I am duty bound to.......

Oh, the basing question again - how do you do them? They look great, and they're nicely consistent too.

Sorry for being cryptic, by the way, about the top-hatted gent with the lamb chop whiskers - the photograph was directly adjacent to your avatar, and I couldn't help but be struck by the similarity between them!

Thanks Hawkeye. I'm sorry, you did ask in an earlier post about the bases. They are textured plasti-card from my local model shop. The old geezer in the top hat does look like an older version of my Avatar......although there is a younger version ( non Zombied) that I posted ages ago.

Four more zombies to add to my growing horde!
The first three are Bluemoon miniatures conversions, the last one ( with the zombie cat) is a plastic mini of unknown origin.

Suddenly the door burst open and it was as though the gates of Hell itself had given way under the pressure of the horrors held within. The stench was unbearable as the shambling horde spilled into the courtyard. I had only four rounds left and at least twenty or so of the filthy creatures betwixed myself and freedom. "I'll have to make every shot count." I half breathed............... Extract from Sir Harcourt Rhymes' Journal 27 September 1887

Thank you for the kind comments! :)

I haven't got a clue where the plastic mini with the cat came from ( although it may be from an old Waddingtons board game). I don't think I've seen a Zombie cat either ( well they've got dogs in Resident Evil so why not!).
I'm pretty pleased with the way the newspapers came out, although it's a London Tribune dated January 1800 so it's a little bit early!!!

As soon as I've put together some scenery I'll get a group shot done.

These are all wonderful conversions. You have hit the nail I have been looking for.

I've just finished watching BBC's Little Dorritt way too many times through for architecture ideas(Well that's what I'm saying). Now I've got it in my head to do a Halloween Zombie game with the residents of the Marshalsea debtors prison overcome by a zombie plague and wreaking havoc on the neighborhood. I think I'll call it "Night of the Living Dorritts".

I haven't got a clue where the plastic mini with the cat came from ( although it may be from an old Waddingtons board game).

It's from a boardgame that was called "the legend of Zagor" over here. It also included a pretty nifty dragon skull throne and a rope bridge. I should get it out somethime and scavenge it for the bits. ;)

Edit: more info here, but no pic of the plastic fellow with cat. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3794 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3794). But he's definitely from that set.

There's no good having Zeds with no where to fight so I've decided to start doing my own card buildings.

This first one is just a prototype.
There are a few faults with it: the front door is a little small, the back door a little too big and it could do with some more shading. The rear windows will be different sizes from the front and the finished building will have a low wall and pavement at the front. I will probably recess the front door aswell.

Anyhow, what do you think?

Pappa, you are still the man!

 :)

Some very inspiring minis AND now you are doing your own buildings...

The back door is maybe a smidge tall, but victorian buildings do tend to have grand entrances - if the front door was a similar size, it would be less noticeable.  If anyone starts being pedantic about it...just zombiefy them  lol

Nicely done - so how did you do it? Printed and then stuck onto foamcore? If so, where did the image come from - you didn't do it yourself, did you? Good god, man, give the rest of us a chance!

Looking forward to seing the city, and its zombified citizen horde, grow!

Thanks for the comments!

The building is all card and is a simple "cut out and fold" affair. I created the image myself using photo shop, overlaying different bits ( The door from a photograph, the windows scratch drawn, the brick and tile work from a model rail drawing programme etc.). The hardest bit was the actual template itself ( getting all the folds and tabs right). Now I've done one it shouldn't be too hard to do some terrace houses, shops and pubs etc.

I was thinking of doing some "Normal" houses aswell as some "Steampunk" versions with a darker more gothic feel to them.
I'll post more as I go.

Hey PM, that looks great!

In my humble opinion I wouldn't worry too much about proportions. You're putting together a Victorian Zed project so why not give the buildings a degree of artistic licence? I think it would add to the fantastical and fictional atmosphere of the project, giving it an original edge.

Having had a short break from painting I thought I do some more Victorian Zombies ( Spurred on by some new minis from Fritzy for my Birthday).

First up some more Zombies ( Westwind Conversions)

Next "Reverend Swan", man of God and Monster Slayer
(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c334/pappa_midnight/ReverendSwan.jpg)

and finally "The Limehouse Ratman" which I've painted for Fritzy
(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c334/pappa_midnight/LimehouseRatman.jpg)

As an Englishman and gentleman I have always known that God was on my side, but even I was suprised to see Reverend Swan strolling unmolested through the throng of undead..... Extract from Sir Harcourt Rhymes' Journal 29 September 1887

Excellent minis, your Zombieness! The zombies, as ever, are a great product of tweaking, good painting, and the ability to see the zombie in every mini!

As for the Reverand Swan - I have that model, and now I know what to use it for! Excellent - and it's always nice to have a word or two of wisdom from Sir Harcourt Rimes's journal!

Nice, very nice. I like the doorman/thug a lot. I've had my eye on that model to use as a prize fighter in Legends of the Old West - when I eventually get my town and its inhabitants finished!
Actually, on that note, a question springs to mind - the Victorian zombies (quite apart from looking great!) are gaming pieces, isn't that right? What rules do you use? Are they an adaptation of your modern-day zombie rules? If so, what's happening with those? I'm curious, in particular, about the process - in other words, did you start to pick up the models first, then start devising the rules, and so on, or did it all come about quite differently? I can't speak for everybody else, but I, for one, would love to find out more about how the different parts of what is clearly a very creative process all come together.
And of course I'm looking forward to more zeds! Excellent!

Thanks for the continuing support and kind comments!

Hawkeye: I will be making some minor modifications to my own rules set, the main ones being no automatic weapons! ( except for gatling guns). I'm also looking at rules for "Horse" powered vehicles aswell as steam powered super-science ( steam coaches, trains etc).
My own rules ground to a bit of a halt at "Campaigns", trying to work out an appropriate experience system.
The rest of it is pretty much finished with rules for creating survivors, combat, vehicle rules, zombie movement and spawning rules. The playtests I ran a while back seemed to work well.
Hopefully when I finally move house ( yes it's still dragging on!) I'll get them finished with the Victorian theme as an add-on.
I pretty much decided to do my own rules as I haven't played anything that has "hit the spot" for me. The figures pretty much came first and then how I could game them second.

Marko: Not a good score so far with the number of Victorian Zombies ( only 25 painted). As for the Survivors, I have 12 painted with 6 of those being properly armed for dealing with the undead menace. Compared to my 100+ modern zeds I can only really do small skirmish type stuff ( although not having automatic weapons makes things a little difficult for the Victorian Survivors!!)

I'll be looking at doing some more buildings this week.

Thank you all for the interest.

Thanks for the info, PM. I remember reading your modern Zed battle reports with interest, and was curious about how the rules were coming along - and how the Victorian game would be connected. Sounds good so far! Happy to hear that the basic in-game rules are working well, and to hear that you're working on campaign rules. To be honest, I think that's the hardest part of a games system to find the right balance in, so I'm looking forward to seeing your take on it!
Best of luck, by the way, with moving house. These things can take forever, and it's almost as stressful as getting married! (so they say, anyway....)
Looking forward to your buildings!

Excellent painting! Those bobbies are great, but it's Bosswell that steals the show for me. Brilliantly done - where's the miniature from? I always like to have a few dogs in my games, and he'd look great in my Wild West collection as the dog of an eccentric English gunman! The bases, as always, are excellently done. This project is really moving forward!

The night watchmen looked more than a little perplexed.
“So let me get this straight. We’re going to re-enforce some coaches with boiler plate, race across a city filled with a few thousand dead cannibals and sail away on that fella’s boat?”
I looked around at the remaining survivors, noting their nods of approval. This indoor market had been a safe haven for nearly 3 weeks but we all knew it was only a matter of time before the infected managed to break in.
“I believe that’s about the sum of it my man.” I replied.
He eyed me up and down, perhaps trying to gauge my mettle.
“Alright Guv, I’m in……………..”

These are great minis and an interesting setting. If you get the chance, have a look at 'The Victorian Undead' comic book. It is all about late Victorian London being menaced by a horde of zombies, whilst the main charcters, a certain Holmes and Watson, try to unravel the secret of their mysterious origins. If you do find copies of the first 4 issues, I guarantee that you will not only see some great artwork but will also return to this forum with a desire for a whole new range of miniatures! ( I won't post extracts because I want the different ideas to come as a joyous surprise as they did for me on first reading)

Thank you all for the comments!

With regards to horses in a city over-run by undead I was thinking of a few possible options:

1# I was thinking of using some sort of "barding" in the form of chainmail or leather with metal strips. I should be able to find suitable models or Greensuff some existing ones.
2# Horses are a viable feast for the zeds and have been replaced with steam powered versions.
3# The horses are NOT considered food ( like the dog in new Dawn of The Dead)

The third option is a bit of a cop out as it involves no extra work!!!!

A Zombie Jack the Ripper sounds like a good idea. An "Intelligent" Zombie with all the murderous tendencies of his undead kin........Hmmmmm......maybe Jack WAS a Zombie that kicked off the plague.......

The latest addition to my "Survivors" comes in the form of Professor Hinchcliffe.
He is a converted Black Scorpion cowboy with a new head, sculpted waistcoat and a new pistol.

The Professor drew an enormous brass coloured revolver from within his coat and fired a single shot at the approaching revenant. The noise was astonishing, more akin to a 2lb cannon being fired than a small arm. The whole upper torso of the revenant was blown assunder, scattering bone a rotting flesh like some sort of obscene confetti.
"I thought you were a pacifist Professor!!!" I said, my ears still ringing from the din.
"That creature should, by the laws of nature, already be dead. I was simply returning it to its natural state...."

Thanks guys.

The top half of the head was from a Westwind Victorian Genleman mini. I merged it with the existing head and rebuilt the nose. I then added some sideburns and the glasses.

The latest addition to my "Survivors" comes in the form of Professor Hinchcliffe.
He is a converted Black Scorpion cowboy with a new head, sculpted waistcoat and a new pistol.

Brilliant - the subtle conversion, the painting (you're clearly developing a niche in the 'painting morning suits' market!), and nice backstory, as always. Where - out of curiosity - is the gun from? Is it a Necrumunda pistol? It looks great - by a strange coincidence, I'm planning to paint a Nerf gun to look just like it.

A few more new additions to my VSF collection.
The first two are a couple of familiar Victorian Characters.......

Next up are Harcourt Rhymes' niece Lucinda and her American companion Marianne
(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c334/pappa_midnight/LucindaRhymes.jpg)

No VSF game is complete without Queen Victoria ( Gawd Bless Her!!)

And finally another version of a certain Victorian Detective. This time he appears to be a little under the weather...

Of course Holmes isn't a REAL zombie!  ;)
I did this one as a Character zombie to fit in with my horde.I do like the idea that he has used his mastery of disguise to infiltrate the horde in an attempt to find the cause of the outbreak.......
Anyhow, everyone knows that he wouldn't be caught dead wearing a deerstalker in the city!!!!

Certainly is.

PM, are you aware of the book 'Queen Victoria - Demon Hunter' by AE Moorat? My girlfriend is reading it at the moment, it seems to involve some foolish lord who experiments with resurection techniques leading to a zombie outbreak, which means the Dear Old Queen (Gawd bless 'er) has to become a zombie-slayer. The cover has a pic of Victoria, looking rather like yours but less happy, with a big axe in one hand and a zombie head in the other. Just thought you might like to know about if you didn't already.

Keep up the inspiring work!

A new addition to my hunters is Cyrus Quinn, professional monster hunter. He is a converted Black Scorpion Cowboy ( new gun, legs shortened and a top hat of course!!!!)

“I borrowed a few ideas from the Maxim. She’s not quite as cumbersome but lacks a little punch.” said Quinn as he leveled his weapon at the group of revenants crossing the footbridge.
“Unfortunately she tends to eat ammunition at a fair lick if you are too heavy on the trigger.”
I looked on in astonishment as Quinn opened fire, the weapon bucking violently with each pull of the trigger. The rounds scythed into the horde wreaking bloody ruin in their wake.
My ears were still ringing as the last of the smoke cleared revealing a bridge devoid of any movement

Brilliant! I'll never look at those Black Scorpion Cowboys the same way again! A great idea, and the execution is spot on - from the goggles on the top hat (I think they're goggles, at least - angle is a little difficult), to the foot rested on the zombie head. Genius.
So, you shortened the legs - is that to make them fit scalewise with your collection? I ask, because the proportions still seem spot on, and I wondered if it was because of the proportions that you decided to do it. Also - that gun. Where's it from? It works perfectly where I guess he originally held a rifle. Excellent, in any case.
Looking forward to more professionals!

Thanks Rob. I've got quite a few "Doubles" of Black Scorpion minis and thought they'd come in handy sometime ( I NEVER throw minis out!!!)

Hawkeye: Thanks for the comments. I shortened the legs a little  ( I took a few mm off just below the knees) as the Blackscorpion stuff tends to tower over Westwind etc. I don't think it really makes a lot of difference to the overall look as BS minis tend to be a little longer in the limb ( realistic proportions)than other manufacturers.
The gun is a HMG from some 20mm WW2 Russians!

How about 2HW's "All Things Zombie"? Lots of fun for solo games and should only need a few minor mods to make it good for Victorian era. Maybe use the vehicle rules from the "Colonial Steam Punks" VSF supplement for their "Colonial Adventures" rules or adapt the contraptions rules from GASLIGHT?

I thought it was about time I painted some military types to bring order to the zombie infested streets:

He's a slightly converted "Reaper Chronoscope" mini. Sergeant and troops to follow.

“No offense was intended Sir. I merely observed that as a former military man, your uniform is not familiar to me.”
The Officer’s demeanor relaxed somewhat, as he lowered his revolver.
He was not a young man, his face heavily lined from years serving in foreign climes.
As he approached I noticed he had a pronounced limp, his left leg stiff and slightly ungainly.

I've also finished my British Infantry (Reaper Minis) to bring some order to the streets.

The force of the blast almost tore the creature in two sending its fetid remains tumbling into the street.
“Good shot Groves!” said Harte, drawing his revolver from his jacket,
“But leave some for me old boy!”
Groves reloaded his shotgun as his friend stepped in front of him and emptied his pistol into the approaching horde. Two more former residents of Lambeth fell motionless to the wet cobblestones.
“Hah! Bagged two of the blighters!”
Groves couldn’t help but smile at his friend’s exuberance

I have seen some of the Reaper colonials, they are really great models, but also kind of on the big side, I have only compared to Empress and Foundry, but they were far too big to use together with them...

So depending on what they are needed for I guess?

Anyway, on topic, this thread keeps surprising me, really high standard and character on all models...

I especially like the head conversions, I wish you could make a head sprue and sell the casts  ;) wink

By 'colonials' I assume you mean the infantry? They're not colonials - look at the helmets! I can't say I'm very fond of the reaper infantry - they've all got the same facial hair, and just look a little 'odd'.

The painting is fantastic, though.

Answer_is_42, I think they have the same facial hair as they are meant to be stereotypical colonial period Brits.
They are not colonial troops no, but they are home service infantry of the Colonial period yes?

They do look a little odd, but they are 'heroic' 28mm, so I am sure they fit in better with Black Scorpion cowboys.

My main problem is the size of the bayonets, surely they are too big! Or was this done on purpose, for extra zombie smashing goodness?

What I want to know, is why is there a Zombie Incursion in this era anyway? I would love to read some background!  :D
Perhaps an experiment of Dr. Jeckyll's, or the evil work of Moriarty!!!  :D

I love them, really well painted and they suit the rest of your minis perfectly. Only thing I would suggest is MORE! :)

The British Army of the period had 17 inch steel bayonets, so these are probably the right size...

By 'colonials' I assume you mean the infantry? They're not colonials - look at the helmets!

They are not in correct home service uniform either - look at the puttees!

 ;)

They appear to be sculpted as VSF types, so can quite easily be used as colonials in this context.

Whatever - I agree with you that the sculpts themselves are not my cup of tea, but PM has done his usual superb job of painting them  :)

PM, did you use top-hats from other figures on Messrs Groves and Hart, or were they made from modelling putty? The reason I ask is, that I got the new Slash album today - absolutely splendid, especially the track where Fergie does the vocals - and I'm enthused to do a Slash zombie-hunter/near-future gang leader. He needs a leather top hat and I was wondering if it would be easier to stick a metal hat on his curly locks or sculpt a new one.

Something like this, but with a bloody big gun:

Thank you all for your continuing interest in my project!!!

Answering a few questions:
The top hats are made from green stuff.I cheat a little with a very small wooden dowel as the hat's core. I find it easier to sculpt around!!!

The Reaper minis are BIG and wouldn't fit very well with foundry. The uniforms look "odd" ( puttees etc), because they are VSF "Colonial" type troops with a simple helmet re-sculpt. I needed home service type infantry and I quite liked them. As you can tell I'm not overly concerned with 100% historical accuracy ....and I'm also too lazy to re-sculpt the legs.. :)

The Zombie outbreak first appeared in early 1887. At first isolated episodes were put down to a disease brought to England by migrant workers as such a terrible ailment couldn't have possibly originated from blighty. It took quite a while for the scientific world to realise that the victims are actually dead. Initially it was thought that the disease put the victim in a kind of torpor and when they awoke they had suffered brain damage, making them violent. As for the "cause", the Church claims that it is a judgement from God for trying to explain everything with the application of science. The real cause is unknown, although several outbreaks have occurred concurrently in wide ranging locations, indicating that possibly the hand of man is at work ( rather than God)

BTW love the idea of Slash as a Zombie Hunter... :D

Foreigners, eh? I always suspected there was something dodgy about them. I suppose once the British infection is put down an expedition force will be needed to purge the European mainland? And what of the Empire?

I've been working on converting some more Victorian Zombies ( Bluemoon Tombstone Civilians) which I will post soon aswell as some Victorian buildings.
Just as a little filler a short extract from Harcourt Rhymes' Journal.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘They’re learning’? I was under the impression that they are mindless brutes.” I replied, still trying to take in what I was seeing.
The dead fellow driving the hansom cab brought it to an unsteady halt at the other side of the street, almost falling off it. He regained his balance and shakily climbed down. He looked around briefly and stumbled forward to his horse where started to brush it!
“You obviously haven’t heard of Sir Pillsbury Knight’s gardener.” said Professor Hinchcliffe, who then imparted a most unusual tale.
Sir Pillsbury Knight had a large estate in Surrey which had been with his family since the 1300’s. He had, as befits his station, a large compliment of servants including a gardener called Tom.
Tom, had like many of his servants, been with his family for years. He lived on his own in the gardener’s cottage, seldom mixing with other servants.
One morning, whilst out strolling in his grounds, Sir Knight came across the half eaten remains of a deer. The poor creature appeared to have been torn to pieces by some sort of wild animal.
It turned out that Tom had been infected for over 2 months and no-one had noticed! He still tended the lawns and had even pruned Sir Knight’s prize roses.
When asked how this could happen, Sir Knight replied “Well, the old fellow didn’t speak much at the best of times and you didn’t want to get down wind of him on a hot day. If anything I thought that his gardening and personal hygiene had improved somewhat!!!”
“What happened to the gardener?” I asked, intrigued by the tale.
“Oh, he’s still looking after the roses. Almost as good as horse manure apparently…………”

Excellent! A new installment! I LOVE the zombie bride - very cool, and the blood on the hem of the dress is a very nice touch - but of course they are ALL great. I like the zombie physican (nice idea - infected while treating the poor souls of London), and the oriental chap is very nicely done.

Are they all from the same Blue Moon Pack or different ones?  YOu see I can't be bothered to go and look myself :D

Thanks for the comments Hawkeye, I'm pleased that you like them!

Reggie, Old Boy, they are all from the Bluemoon Old West "Tombstone Civillian" pack. There are a few minis which aren't suitable but the majority wil be having the "Z" treatment.

The Foundry "Victorian Gents" would be a natural for this too.

Wow! This is one magnificent thread!
17 pages and I want to see more!

This gives me a great idea for a game at the upcomming Steamcon II, here in Seattle in November.
I better get painting! (and buying) ;D

Back again............... I've been a little distracted of late by the latest addition to the Midnight household in the form of a bulldog pup. He's a real character but is taking up most of my free time at the moment.
I've got loads of unpainted, half-built projects which I don't seem to get the time to get stuck into!!

Anyhow, I managed to get these done whilst the little blighter was asleep!!

Thanks for the comments guys.

My new pup is a bulldog from the "Mollett" bloodline. They are an attempt to breed out some of the normal problems which English Bulldogs suffer from ( damned Edwardians bred pugs into them to give them that squat face and breathing problems). He will be a lot larger and more athletic than a standard bully.
The photo is a few weeks old now, so he's a little bigger ( just over 32lbs!!!). As for farting he can already stun an adult bear at 50 paces!!!

Cheers

Way cool!

It is cruel and weird of Dr. Moreaux proportions what show dog breeding has done to some mutts. Crippling degenerations in perfectly healthy working dogs like Altasians are rewarded. Some dog owners should get their ears and asses trimmed just for the pedagogical effect.

And on topic: stonking conversions, Papa. Glad to see you back on track.

Next up is a werewolf hunter complete with silver stakes and crossbow(s). O.K so he's not a Zombie Hunter as such but he fits right in wit the other hunters.
He's another convertd Blackscorpion Cowboy (new coat, stakes, weapon swaps and hat)

Lupus: Glad you like them. I was thinking of doing a ladies club for their better halves......

Grimmnar:He's OK ( the pain meds have him a little stoned) and is already trying to run on his fixed leg. Animals are so damned tough when it comes to injuries. Anyhow he should make a full recovery so he'll be back to causing mayhem and wreckin my house!!!  As for carrying him, he waits for me to carry him up and down steps..not sure if this is due to his injury or he's just lazy. :)

WK: The basic body is a hotwheels bike, the rest is just odd bits from my bits box. There's an un-primed picture here showing some of the parts ( even I don't know the origin of a lot of them) near the bottom of the page:

You know, when I said, earlier on another thread, 'having gone looking for a bit more of your work', surprisingly, I hadn't looked at this sticky. 1) Didn't realize it was you, 2) Couldn't think of why a single game thread should have a sticky...

Now that I've followed it through, it is the perfect example of what a sticky should do: challenge the brave, daunt the proud, demonstrate imagination AND talent in many aspects. Your background 'fluff' was fun without the figures, and the images each stood on their own.

No wonder everyone sounded taken aback at what appeared to be criticism from me. Good Lord, sirrah, I was lucky not to be lynched!

I see many interesting and varied games in your future; I certainly can't see the whole crew on one table at one time without threatening those paint jobs... ;->=

I must say, I'm not a fan of Zombie games, but this is all really rather nifty. I certainly think armed police are needed. A line of constables with revolvers would be very cool.

You need to send the Hunt club to me totally unsuitable and below par for your usual standard (and they would be ideal for my Deadlands games)

Thanks for the continuing interest in my project, it keeps me motivated!!!

When Blackscorpion released their cowboy range I bought the lot. My mate fritzy also bought a fair number aswell. When he decided he didn't want them anymore I gave them a good home. After gathering dust for a while decided to "play" with the doubles I had to make some VSF minis. So basically the minis aren't from any particular pack as such just a cross-section of the range.

I have a few police painted up but the poor blghters are only armed with truncheons, whistles and the majesty of the law!!!
Interesting comment about extended quotes... I looked at the link referring to cross-posting..... Hmmm... I think I've done a little of that with the assault bike although I only included one pic in the other post and a link to this thread ( didn't want to post pics twice)

Thanks LTD. How did your fella get on with a pin missing? It was a litle hit and miss with mine but he's recovering well.

I wouldnt worry about the odd cross post, seems to be getting a little anal around here, its a forum and for fun not a newspaper editing team  ::) ;)

He did and is doing ok. The big thing was keeping him entertained until it healed, we did lose out to his chewing habits or rather a 3 piece suite did :?

It was his front leg and with being so young (6 months) adapted very well, we have had a couple of scares especially with his hind leg breaking through a stress fracture (he hops like a rabbit to get around).

Now he is around 7 years and starting to slow down, it will no doubt shorten his life span and we have noticed he isnt so active as he used to be but he is doing well. :D

Vets bills are quite frightening and I think in all the amputation, aftercare etc worked out around £2,500 :o. I just wish I had studied at school and become a vet

7 years and still going is pretty damn good considering the trauma he's had. An excellent testament to the owner I think. As for becoming a vet, you and me both mate!!! I thought mine was bad at £1000.00. It grips me that £400.00 of that was a titanium pin which they will remove when he's healed.........My wife says I should get a refund on its scrap value...... :)

I don't know where to start!
Is there a fairly large, motley assortment of victorian civilians out there?
I know I can pick up a hand full here and there, which I would probably do for the hunters.

There's a nice serialized campaign being made for roleplay called War of the Dead, I'd like to perhaps do it victorian style!

I am currently working on the vehicle construction rules. Pretty much finished them for modern gaming but have had to re-write a lot for Victorian style stuff ( Steam power, horses etc).
Will keep you posted.

Just a quick pic of my latest addition to my Monster Hunters:
Lord Anthony Beresford, Master of The Kensington Hunt Club
(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c334/pappa_midnight/TheLordOfTheHunt.jpg)

He's another converted Blackscorpion Cowboy ( Head change, new weapon and walking cane)

“Lord Beresford was an impressive figure, fully six and one half feet tall, with his top hat pushing him closer to seven. He stood motionless in the street his hand resting on his silver-topped walking cane as the remaining survivors hurried past into the deserted station. I was just about to call to him that everyone was inside, when, without turning he raised his right hand for me to remain silent.
I could hear them now, a low animalistic groan indicating the approach of a large group of revenants.
Without further ado he began to walk casually towards the source of the noise, sweeping his long frock-coat back and drawing his pistol …………”

Extract from Sir Harcourt Rhymes' Journal 17 November 1887

Brilliant - the Hunt Club is a wonderfully imaginative addition to an already fantastic thread, and this guy is no exception. Love the beard, the cane is very nice detail, and the gun is a real room-clearer! Nice!

Another nice conversion and paintjob.

As I struggle with just getting some basic minis painted, I can really appreciate the work put into these creations.

Now, Beresford.... what pop culture phenomena do I think I know that name from....?  ::)

Is it just me or does he bear a striking resemblance to Alan Moore...?

From left to right:
Mantic Zombie with Green Stuff shirt and legs from a Westwind mini
Westwind Nun with Mantic "Face"
Converted Westwind Thug
Mantic Zombie with legs from a westwind mini and GS braces.

Those Ghouls and Zombies from Mantic are ideal for conversions...........FERAL Vampyres on the way.....!!!!

As great as the rest.  A question: Is the blue around their eyes supposed to be bruising, or is it your intention for their eyes to look as if they're glowing?  Either way, I like the effect.

Thank you for the continuing interest in my thread. This April it will be 2 years old!!!!

Mancha:
I started using blue ink in the eye sockets as I find it gives better definition to the White eyes rather than just using black.

Commander Vyper:
I'll be going into hospital at the end of the week for an Op. I should have quite a while on hands afterwards to catch up with stuff. I will definitely be taking some group shots with my zeds and hunters so far.
Most of the weapons are BlackScorpion ones which I have removed from converted minis. Prof Hinchcliffe's handgun is a necromunda revolver, the "triple R" ( Rapidly Repeating Rifle ) carried by one of the Hunt Club is a converted 1:72 ww2 Russian HMG, the vampire hunter's weapons are a Mordheim crossbow on his back and the pistol bow is from a horror clicks teenage vampire hunter. Berresford's pepperbox pistol is scratch built using thin plastic dowel and greenstuff.
Hope that helps.

Just waiting for the varnish to dry on the "St Augustine" monster hunters ( nuns ), pictures to follow shortly.

The last figure is from Reaper, he's called Smedly Cloverdash, Evil Villain.

Foggy the Great posted on a few days ago in this thread here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=25155.0) and I decided I had to have one.

Pappa Midnight, I think he fits in excellently with the rest of your stuff. Where else would an obviously insane but dapper evil gent want to hang out but your thread? Well, Froggy's got a country mansion of course, but while he's in town, I figure he's going to be at your place! As always, crazy and gorgeous stuff there. I love the Nuns!

Stunning! It's strange, I was just looking back through this thread a few days ago, marvelling at the creativity, and wondering when the next installment might be - and then there it was!
As always, the black and brass scheme is done to perfection, it's got heaps of character and steampunk flavour, and it fits perfectly into your vividly imagined world. But wait, that's not all! I also love the bases (always have - they look great, and pull every part of this project together).
As for parts, and their sources - is the engine from Ramshackle? I'd guess the coal tender is from a toy train (because I have one for my old west project that's the spitting image of it - except that mine's unpainted....) although it looks like you might have modified the wheels on it, and the caboose/shooting platform looks like it's scratchbuilt, but I'd love to learn more about the whole thing! Actually, I'm going to check the thread you refer to, because I seem to have missed it first time around.
Great to have an update on this project, PM! Brilliant work.

No real time for hobby stuff of late but I managed to paint up a couple of "Reaper Deadlands" minis when I was off over Christmas.
No conversions this time, just a hat change on the male to fit in with rest of my stuff.

Really like the new reaper minis and I will probably buy some more when funds aren't so tight....... :)

Great stuff as always... still waiting for you to share your recipe on black.  lol

Sorry, I believe you asked me this ages ago................
I use a black base-coat then highlight with a little "flesh" ( I use Vallejo Medium Flesh Tone) mixed with black. Not too much initially. I then highlight again with the same mix with a little white added ( just on raised areas and edges). Finally I use a black "wash" ( GW wash is good). It blends it together. I use the flesh tone as a mixer because it looks more "organic" and natural rather just mixing in white. Finally I use matt varnish.
Hope that makes sense.

You must post more pics of what you're up to next, how many revenants have you left to convert/paint before one can call one's self done old chap? (Sorry been listening to Professor Elemental and it's left me a little 'colonial'! Geoffery, my fighting trousers!).

Thanks for the comments.

I'm away for a while with work so I won't be doing much for a while. I will try and get some more decent group shots with my scenery etc when I get back.
Haven't got many minis left for "zedding" ( but I am always on the look out!!!) but still have a few hunters primed up for painting.
My "rules" have been coming on quite well and I have almost completed the vehicle construction section. I will keep you posted about the progress.

Brilliant stuff - lovely earthy tones on those three, particularly on the chap in the middle. It's also great to hear that the rules are coming along - I'll throw my hat in with everybody else in the call for a group shot with buildings - or even better, a battle report! Excellent painting, and a fantastic vision for the world you've created.

Still here, and still plodding through my little project......
I've been finding it really difficult to stay motivated at the moment due to a lot of real life stuff going on. It's nice to see people are still interested in my work.
I've been struggling a little with my eyes and find small details a little difficult which has made painting a bit of a chore. Maybe a trip to Spec-savers........
Any how, i had a rush of blood to the head and have just finished 12 new zeds and 3 new hunters. They are drying at the moment but I will take some pics shortly.

12 New Revenants to add to the mix and three Hunters.......... I've been a busy boy.......

All the Zombies are westwind ( although one is a conversion of a detective from their gothic range)

The second from left and far right have had some minor conversion work ( Pose change and added shirt in that order)

The woman??? has had a hand change and the one on the far right is a conversion.

No conversions...straight out of the box....

And the Hunters

LAF Miniatures either side of a limited edition Westwind mini.

I enjoyed painting these over the last couple of evenings. Hope you like them.

Beautiful - I love how your zombies all look different (whether it's through model choice, "tweaking", converting, or what have you) but they also all have a wonderfully cohesive quality to them. Brilliant. And the Zombie Hunters are very nice. The striped pants and the plaid are handled wonderfully, and I love the gun of the guy on the right! The goggles not only pull the models together, but are one of those things that unite the whole project. Wonderful attention to detail that has a really far-reaching effect for the project overall. Sorry to hear that there are life issues causing problems - sometimes an escape for an hour or two to a cohesively created world like this is just the ticket for those times. Hope things pick up/sort themselves out soon.

Just finished some new Hunters:

Sir Douglas Barnette, Senior Member of the Kensington Hunt Club armed with sabre and "Lancaster" Pistol.( Converted Spinespur mini)

Mr Garrett, Professional Monster Hunter wearing his patented "Contra-Miasma" hood.  ( converted Blackscorpion Mini)

Professor Tobias Lane, Kensington Hunt Club Chief Mechanic. ( Ratnik Miniature)

Lady Alicia Devalle and her daughter Grace. ( Ironclad & Ratnik Minis)

I think I may have to repaint "Grace's" face as the paint was a little too thick. Doesn't look too bad in the flesh but it looks a little lumpy on camera.  :(

Anyhow, hope you like them.

Fantastic conversions and great painting of some lovely minis. Whilst they're all great, I particularly love Sir Douglas's expression. He looks surprised and annoyed at the same time, as if he's horrified by some zombie's dashed bad manners.

Thanks for the comments. I'm also very pleased with Sir Douglas. The original mini was an impulse buy and I had no real use for it.
Hopefully I should receive some Mage Knight "steam tinkers" I ordered from the US this week. They should be a reasonable base for some "Professor Niles' patented fighting trousers" ( steam powered exo-armour).

Where all time goes: sucked into a small opening in a black lemon the size of a bowlingball located in the London subway system where it travels up and down (as well as sideways and diagonally) along the tube in order to feed a tribe of hairless kiwi's with three eyes and one leg who are secretly in control of most of the "civilised" world's government and all of this is funded with your tax money.
