Title: 15mm South African Border War project
Post by: mrcleh on January 25, 2018, 05:50:02 PM
Hey all,

as promised in my "Introductions" topic I am going to chronical my current 15mm Border War project on here.

This project started last summer after buying the Force on Force supplement "Bush Wars". Reading through the book I became really interested in the South African Border War, all the more so having travelled through Namibia myself in 2016.

Not long after that I started collecting miniatures for the project and around Christmas I finally started building and painting some stuff.

Anywhere, here goes and please excuse the poor pictures:

That's the three groups of SADF mechanized infantry I currently got painted. I need to paint three more groups so I'll have the three full sections of a platoon. And they are still missing their rides of course.

Now as far as accuracy is concerned: The miniatures carry FN FAL rifles, but should actually be carrying R4 rifles, a South African variant of the Israeli Galil and the LAW should actually be a RPG-7. But it's good enough for me.

Currently I am working on these things:

These are my wip Olifant Mk1a tanks, South African-upgraded Centurion tanks. As far as I know nobody does these in 15mm, so I bought some Centurion tanks and started converting them. As with the infantry I am not going for complete accuracy here. In a trade-off between effort and result I decided to add the visiual features that to me makes these things identifiable as Olifants and sets them apart from standard Centurion tanks - The stowage boxes on the rear of the turret and the stowage boxes on the side of the engine deck (which is completly wrong for example, but converting that too is a step too far for me, time-wise  ;) )
I'll need three of these at most and am currently building one more. I hope to have these guys finished soon!

That's all for now. I am looking forward to your feedback!

Don't Peter Pig or QRF do an Olifant? I could've sworn I'd seen one somewhere!

But your models are beautiful, I look forward to seeing the rest  :)

Thank you!

Peter Pig only does Centurions and the Israeli Sho't variant of the Centurion. QRF also has various British Centurions, but sadly no Olifants. QRF does all the South African APCs though, like Ratels and Casspirs. I'll be ordering some soon. ;)

I am sorry for the inconvenience. I was originally using Google Images, but apparently that is not working anymore.

Anyway, I moved the photos to a new location, so hopefully they should be showing up now!

What range are your infantry from?

Thank you for the kind feedback! :)

The infantry are Peter Pig "Professionals". They can be found in their "Modern Africa" range: http://www.peterpig.co.uk/ak47.html (http://www.peterpig.co.uk/ak47.html)
Lovely figures!

The texturing on the bases was done using GWs "Armageddon Dust" texture paint.

Beautifully painted and a great project to start.

What forces are you putting together and in what formational groups?

If FoF doesn’t work out then a modern Chain of Command variant would be worth a look to put together or a variant of Jay’s Wargming Madness Modern Bolt Action ( if that suits). I’d be interested to hear your experience of using FoF Bush Wars for the Bush War.

Looking forward to seeing this project expand and will be following with interest.

Nice job 👍👍

Cheers

Thanks again for your kind feedback! I most definately share your enthusiasm for Centurion tanks, jamesmanto. ;)

I plan on doing the following forces:

SADF & UNITA:

- SADF Mech Platoon (4 x Ratels 20s, 3 x infantry sections, platoon command section)
- 4 x Ratel 90s
- 3 x Olifant Mk1a
- TAC and FO 2 x Ratel OP/Command
- 1 x Impala Mk2 for CAS
- 2 x Alouette G Car
- 1 x Alouette K Car
- 3 - 4 UNITA infantry sections
- Various UNITA support weapons (Think DShKs mainly)
- 2 x UNITA Land Rovers with recoilless rifles
- A couple softskins for UNITA, mostly captured trucks

Eventually I'd like to do Koevoet and 32 Battalion, but at the pace I am working at right now that might take some time. :D

FAPLA & SWAPO/PLAN:

- FAPLA mechanized infantry platoon: 3 infantry sections plus HQ, riding either 3 x BTR-60s or 3 x BTR-152s
- 1 x extra infantry section
- 6 x T-55s
- 5 x T-34s
- Maybe a couple Cuban T-62s
- 3 x BRDM-2s
- Maybe a couple PT-76s
- Various support weapons (DShKs, Sagger ATGMs and SA-7 Grail)
- Random support vehicles (Think truck-mounted ZU-23 aa guns)
- A couple of softskins
- 4 - 5 x SWAPO PLAN infantry sections

That is all based off the FoF Bush Wars supplement. And oh boy, that is a lot of stuff! ;D

Now as far as rules are concerned I'll be glad to give you my thoughts on FoF Bush Wars. Unfortunately the first game is still a ways off, most likely sometime this spring. Still got some painting to do first. :D

Chain of Command might work as well. I haven't bought the rules yet (let alone thought about adapting them to the Border War), but I have read a lot of good stuff about them and I think they might be well suited for this kind of conflict.

Bolt Action might also work. Thank you for the link to the Modern Bolt Action playsheet, I'll give this a read sometime this week!

@Mrcleh

That sounds like a mighty fine force there. Quite a bit of ‘kit’ so it’d be interesting to see how FoF goes with that. I know there is alot of info on that game system around and I guess your just getting all the options...your core force being Infantry....isn’t it always 🙄...PBI

@Happy Wanderer:

You are of course right, that list is just what I'd like to collect eventually so as to have every option available. All that kit will most likely never be used in a single game.

For example, in the largest scenarios in the Bush Wars FoF supplement each side has about 25 to 40 infantry figures and about 3 - 6 vehicles. Considering that the PBI was highly mechanized on both sides in the Border War that feels about right.

Given common table sizes I think for larger mechanized and/or armored formations 15mm is the wrong scale. But as always that is a matter of taste. ;)

Thank you! I actually stumbled upon your work last year, thanks to Google image search. Your Bush War and Rhodesia miniatures are absolutely amazing!

Sadly, I've been swamped at work lately. But I hope to make some progress this week, maybe even get some paint on an Olifant. ;)
