Title: Hello new site
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on February 15, 2018, 02:47:37 PM
Dear LAF members,

welcome to the new LAF ship! We completed the handover, LAF left Germany and arrived in UK and I think it looks good :) Thanks to everyone being involved into the handover process for their great support and input. The software had been upgraded, some old bugs had been fixed, data transfer completed. From now on if you have any questions to the owner of LAF, please contact Nick Eyre (nicknorthstar). This is my last post in my role as administrator of LAF, looking forward to join the ranks of regular users now :)

Have a good time and thanks for your patience.

Best wishes

Alex

So, I don't post very often and mostly lurk and get inspired (I should post more but I get intimidated, sorry), but I just wanted to express my gratitude for the maintenance and continued upkeep of this special corner of the hobby world and the internet.

Thanks guys and gals.

Good to see a site back. But formatting is very odd.
Sidebar combined with the user name and logo is wider than the thread post area.
Pretty much all the included images force the page to scroll off the side of the monitor.
Looks as if the column widths need to be amended.

That's odd. None of those things are happening for me.

Good to see it is back and thanks to prof. Witchheimer for running the site all those years  :).

Glad that the transfer seems to have gone well. I have a couple of minor issues such as my avatar going missing but I am sure I can re-load.

One annoying thing is that you can't navigate directly to your sent items without first opening the My Messages page, and even then you have to hover over the messages icon to bring up the options.

I also notice that the column showing who started the thread has been lost.  I found that quite useful to find the canon of work of a particular member in that board section.  Any chance of resurrecting it or is there another way to get that functionality?

Thanks to all who navigated us through the transfer.  We have now folded space...

Now to photograph and post some of the things I've managed to finish...

No, it is the widths of the various columns that is causing me problems.

This image previously remained within the thread post box area. Either the column widths are off or the resize is not working.
Also note the left hand half of the screen is taken up with the sidebar and member ID/Avatar panel. These are both much wider than they were before.

robh - I've been able to toggle the sidebar on and off using the small arrow button immediately at the top left above the post. Any good?

More of a potential issue is that images previously uploaded to threads (rather than linked)aren't displaying for me, although they are showing as attachments and can be clicked on. Can this be fixed? Haven't tried uploading any new images yet; that'll be next...

I'm also not seeing anyone's avatars where these have been personally uploaded rather than taken from the forum stock images.

Anyone else having this problem?

Now weirdly they are displaying on my phone but not on the laptop. Suspect this means the problem is with my ageing tech rather than the site, but they displayed fine on both before. Probably just a temporary glitch.

Yes I know what you mean, this is an issue for me. However it does seem that the arrow at the top right of the thread / board hides the left hand column and gives enough room for the images.

I also notice that the column showing who started the thread has been lost.  I found that quite useful to find the canon of work of a particular member in that board section.  Any chance of resurrecting it or is there another way to get that functionality?

Yes that's the first thing I noticed! I would really like to see it back to how it was, as I like to be able to quickly scroll through and glance at user names to see who is behind each thread.
At least it's not like a certain other wargaming message board where it doesn't tell you anywhere who the thread author is until you open it....

It’s still there, guys, below the thread name:

Yes but I can't now sort the thread by 'Started by' and see the whole of a members work in that thread.  I found it useful to get a feel for a particular period and see someones whole work on that particular board.  It is particularly useful tool to find those members who post lots of work but use a different thread each time.

On the other hand the less useful (at least for me) button to see how many posts/views is still available.

Can this be fixed?

It’s still there, guys, below the thread name:

Yes I know, I just prefered how it used to be a separate column and was easier to see at a glance. :) It's just a minor thing, but if it's simply a different setting that could be switched I'm sure a lot of other people would prefer it how it was before.

I had the same at first. The correct address is http://leadadventureforum.com/

The address http://leadadventureforum.com/ redirects to Wargames Illustrated, which as Prof.Witchheimer and Nick have said provides technical support.

Let us know about any problems. Somethings we'll just have to live with of course, but if we can change anything we'll try to.

Mark from Wargames Illustrated did all the technical swopover stuff and gave us space on their server, which is why their address comes up. They've done it all for nowt, so thanks very much to Mark for his work.

I had a choice of asking WI, or getting my tech guy to do it. The difference is Ian who looks after the North Star websites isn't in the hobby, and WI are.

What'll they get for it? When I introduce the banner ads, you'll see me, Miniaturicum/ LAF Miniatures and Wargames Illustrated there.

My problem is, that the screen is not really fitting for iPad/Pads.

Same issue with IPhone. Unfortunately when reading a thread the two left hand info columns take up half the screen, making it very difficult to see the actual post content. Other than that (which is a big issue for me as I don’t use a pc, just iPhone and iPad) it’s smoother/faster.  :)

I'd say keep reporting issues but give it some time for adjustments to occur.  My basic concern is that the forum is now located near darkest Nottingham where much good hobbiness gets sucked into oblivion.  Okay, a few good things come out of there, too.   :?

Great work with the transfer and I definitely felt the loss of the LAF for those couple of days.

My only suggestion at the mo is to make the thread titles in bold on each board as now when I look at a board I kinda get a dyslexia-inspired blur and have to really stare at the text to break it down into thread titles in my head.

Hi Alec - I just wanted to express my gratitude to you for setting up this site and maintaining it for many years. It is without doubt the best War Gaming Site on the internet with the most civil and polite membership I have come across and this I believe is down to your guiding principles as well as the board moderators influence and I hope this continues.

I'll be honest and say that I am saddened by the fact that it has moved from Germany to Britain partly because it's likely to change from an Indie operation to a commercial one with what ever that might imply and partly because the War Gaming world is Anglo Centric UK and US and having this very influential forum based elsewhere just seemed a good thing to me. You will note I am from the UK.

The final thing I would like to comment on, are the few replies that have asked if it's OK to portray the swastika, the reason we have not done so in the past is because it's illegal in Germany but also because it offends quite a few people, hence the law, I believe we should continue to have the same respect for all our neighbours sensibilities in the future as we have in the past.

All the best to the new LAF and all who sail in her.

The legal imperative has gone and I'm sure there will be a relaxed rule revision in due course. Ultimately though it will come down to the owner's desires as to what he wants/permits to be displayed on his site.

Title: Re: Hello new site
Post by: Captain Blood on February 17, 2018, 05:32:27 PM
It’s just the way they appear now. The forum software is a newer version, and the way some things manifest is not quite the same as it was before. PMs now appear to display in a chain, like a thread, as you say. Not sure if that’s a settings issue that can be changed by the admin, but it doesn’t seem like a problem to me? Just different  :)

Here's another one - links within posts that reference discussions on the previous incarnation of the Lead Adventure Forum are now broken, e.g. one from this post about a previous Red Dragon junk build:

The previous, and now broken, link was:

It ought to work as follows, however:

Might I thus suggest a search-and-replace for URLs within posts that used to reference the old domain, replacing them with ones citing the new domain?

Without a fix, cross-references from before the migration will, effectively, be lost, losing some synergy and likely diverting the curious towards making more use of the search functionality.

For info, anybody who was using feedly, or another RSS reader, should change the feed URL to http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml

I am informed that efforts are underway to resolve this issue. It is hoped that this will make manually changing all the links unnecessary. So you might want to hold off doing so to save yourselves some effort.

Surely a simple search and replace of the code could sort much of those issues out.

Well I've got about a hundred links in my "Links to Colonial Battle Reports" thread. If there's an automatic way to fix all those, I'm damned if I'm going to do it manually. Sod that for a game of soldiers. :)

Have you tried setting your PM preferences in your account?  There is a conversation setting there.

Thanks! That did the trick!

However, what happened to my "sent" messages? Aha! Although the PM section and tree view seem to default to the Inbox, the Sent messages folder can be found by clicking on the "Messages" icon.

Above the list of messages there's a tab that says "Messages Actions Preferences." The Messages option has a drop-down menu, one of the options on which is to look at your sent messages.

A bit clunky, compared with the old system, but there we are.

Is the list of users viewing a particular board/ thread gone now, or am I just missing it? How ever will be know when there's 1000 spam bots on the Post-Apocalyptic board now?!  ;D

Mark from Wargames Illustrated did all the technical swopover stuff and gave us space on their server, which is why their address comes up. They've done it all for nowt, so thanks very much to Mark for his work.

Might I suggest some sort of notice when redirecting, especially now that the transfer is still very recent? The difference between http://leadadventureforum.com and http://leadadventureforum.com isn't immediately apparent to everyone, I assume. Just a five second redirection notice along the lines of "Looking for LAF? Lose the www! This address leads to Wargames Illustrated, who are hosting LAF" might be useful for the first few months.

Other than that, absolutely no gripes. Great work!

Glad to have LAF back. Looking good!

Is there a way to increase the font size on the main topic page? Much smaller than before.

Thanks

Chuck

I'm with Chuck on this. The font on my PC is a bit smaller than before making it a little less comfortable to read. Is there a button I can press to fix this?

I managed to toggle the side bar using the button top right above the bit that contains the posts.
[This might have come up elsewhere in this thread, sorry if that is the case]

Could it be differences in browser rendering?

OOOoh yes.

There is a list of links to games AARs on my ruleset website, I just notice that they are broken too.

It is a little bit strange, when you use the adress: http://leadadventureforum.com and you find yourself on the website from Wargames Illustrated.
Only the less popular site http://leadadventureforum.com brings you to the forum.
Does it mean, that this forum will be "eaten" by the wargames illustrated? Or how will the link redirect in the next days???

Thanks for that NurgleHH.

That's a mistake. I'm not Wargames Illustrated. The new server for LAF is the same as Wargames Illustrated is on, because I asked my chums at WI to do the technical side of things for the change over. We'll get it sorted tomorrow.

Alright, I'm now getting used to this outlook though there's one thing, likely just me having a problem with:

That line, it's just so barely visible there that it strains my eyes.
Any chance it could be made a bit darker someday after the more pressing concerns are looked after?

I miss the "started by" column from the good old days. It made everything look much more organised. The board looks more scrambeled and cluttered now.

I realise I can stille see who started a thread, but it was easier to scan through before.

You still have a sorting option for "Started By" next to "Subject" in the board views. It's not yet there in the "Unread" view and related items (i.e. those views that collate Posts from various boards), but in the topical boards, you can sort by topic starter.

However, the Gallery can be reached via this link

Thanks for the link, pictures do load and link to reports, I've just done it. A very timely post as I was scratching my head wondering where the gallery had gone!!

I normally load pictures at 800 pixels wide and they used to display fine on the laptop - now they are overlapping the page on my post, has anyone experimented with picture size on the new layout to find out what displays correctly?

A little thing but I'm not convinced the 'Notify' button works (y'know, so you get emails when your threads are commented on) - anyone else experiencing that? I tried toggling it too and it doesn't seem to be working...

As you know the site admins have now fixed the problems with the gallery URLs (picture address) there are still a few errors hiding in nooks and crannies around the forum. I noticed one by people pointing out that the impressive array of Painting Club honours had turned invisible. The reason was that I had uploaded a jpeg-image with the honour badges  into the forum gallery and linked to it in my signature. I had to go to my profile and change the address from 'http:// www.lead-adventure.de/...' to 'leadadventureforum.com/...'

See attached image...

The above case is just an example of how this issue can appear. In the described case you can amend it yourself in your profile but should you need help, let us know.

We have another issue where avatars have become invisible. It seems to be browser or device related. We are still working with that one but will let you know when we have resolved it.

The Lead Apocalypse painting club badge survived across the domain change and redirects fine, but the Future Wars Painting Club: 101 Space Oddities didn't.

They are, however, both at the new leadadventures.com address if folk update their signature

Apologies if this has been covered (in this thread or elsewhere) - I've rarely been on the site the last few weeks. Happy that the move went well though.

I'm colourblind and I have trouble with reading users names on the dark green (e.g. "zemjw" in his reply above. I didn't have this problem on the old version of the site.

Can we personally change colours or can that combination be tweaked to assist those of us that are colour blind?

And I just ran a search and the highlight of my search term (different colour in bold) is impossible for me to read. I don't think all colour matches occured from the old to new site. Thanks in advance to the mods.

After half a year off I was quite surprised by the changes. Not only because of the big banner-ad in the middle of the screen but also that I had to google the new address, because my bookmark was pointing to LA-minis website. Nevertheless I'm happy that this great community continues and that I can log in to my account without any problems. Good work! And a big "hello" from me to the "new" site!
