Title: Looking for galley ruleset Ancient and/or Renaissance
Post by: Pijlie on February 18, 2018, 01:36:06 PM
I am looking for a ruleset to play Mediterranean naval games, preferably with galleys. This would ideally include anything from the Ancient period up until the 16th century AD. But I am willing to settle for less  :D

Scale is not very important, nor is the number of ships. A squadron game might be just as challenging as a fleet game. Availability of models is irrelevant as I will most likely build them myself.

I don't mind a little complexity. I perused Poseidons Warriors for example but found that too flat and simple. Some sort of command system, morale and ship class would all be welcome. Bookkeeping within reasonable limits is no problem. Turn length should ideally be under 30 minutes.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try Rod Langton's Serenissima. It covers Renaissance galley tactical warfare. Also you can try his other ruleset, for Ancients Naumachiae, which, by the way, you can check for free in his website.

Ha Jan-Willem,

I have Diekplus (Society of Ancients) and Naumachiae (Rod Langton), you are welcome to borrow them.

Grtz,

Luc.

Thanks for all the replies! I lost track of this thread for a while since I found my response notifications in my spam box, but LAF and my mail server are friends again.

I will seek out your suggestions (and start building galleys) as soon as I find some time!
