Title: Yankeepedlar’s Italian Wars Project ~ a small camp scene added 22/1/19
Post by: Yankeepedlar01 on February 19, 2018, 07:33:22 AM
Phil and I have started a joint project to build armies for the Italian Wars. Phil chose Florence for his army and I chose the Papal States for mine. I’ll post my progress on this thread periodically. This is my first base of pike and the eighth base I’ve completed so far. The figures are by TAG.

Not much interest by way of reply though to justify the effort of posting.

Really like the yellow you painted on your crossbowmen.
Hard color to get right.
Excellent start on your army.
How many figures to you plan for your army?

Thanks for those kind words of encouragement.
That’s a difficult question to answer though about figures. Why? Well, Phil and I set out jointly on this project intending that each base will be a unit, figures on the base are largely representative in that case. All bases will be 100mm wide and most 50mm deep, with pikes at 100mm. We shall use a mash up of Neil Thomas’ rules ~ Ancient & Medieval and Pike & Shotte ~ together with our own additions. In this case an ‘army’ can be as few as 8 bases. We are aiming at about 16 initially. I have finished 12 bases so far and Phil about 3. When we can muster 20 or so bases between us we will give a game a go.

A riot of colour!

Hats off to Mr. Bickley. I was going through the broken mess that is the Colonial Adventures list of battle reports the other day and noticed just how many of them were by Mr. B (and unlike mine, the pictures on his are still working). I know you sometimes talk of giving up on LAF, but it will be a duller place if you ever do. Your work is valued, even if sometimes we forget to post a reply saying so.

Thanks Plynkes and others of course. I get easily discouraged as an average painter and value feedback like that. My painting skills are moderate really, but I am reinvigorated by this Italian Wars project, the figures are a joy and there are no uniforms to worry over!

Warlord Games has some nice figures for the period, specially civilians for the village that is going to be pillaged by your troops:

It's all coming together rather well Dave.   :)

I understand your frustration with the side-shootin' mtd crossbows. There really is no reason why they can't have been posed shooting forwards for 'wargames purposes', even if they are possibly depicted in a 'realistic' fashion for a quicker getaway.

To answer the questions:-
1. Rules?
We shall use a mash up of Neil Thomas’ rules ~ Ancient & Medieval and Pike & Shotte ~ together with our own additions. In this case an ‘army’ can be as few as 8 bases.
2. The figure in question.
From a now defunct range for The Orc’s Nest in London. I got it via a second hand figure stand at Wargamer because it was sculpted by Matt.

Like the crossbowmen very much, David  :)

On the whole though, I'm not quite sold on the sculpting for this TAG range. I think they're still being done by Nick Collier, who used to be one of my favourite sculptors when he produced those brilliant ECW ranges for Bicorne and Renegade, and some of his earlier work for TAG's renaissance range. But there's something about some of these more recent figures (not all) that just doesn't look quite right to me... The heads are a bit too big, the legs a wee bit bandy, the poses a bit wooden... Can't quite put my finger on it.

Anyway, it doesn't detract from your painting and impressively rapid progress with the army. Just an eye of the beholder thing I guess...  :)

Well, it's sometimes hard to think of something fresh to say about every single new entry in an ongoing thread like this, but it doesn't mean we aren't interested (that's why, unlike most of my contemporaries, I approve of the concept of the "Like" button, as you can express interest and approval when you don't actually have anything in particular to say).

Anyway, coming along nicely. Don't stop.

My guess, command and control issues.

This is great to see this project on the table, really looks very smart and appealing.

Do you have any close up pics of your Italian infantry, the ones that use the Perry 1450-1500 metals? The 'heavy infantry' with poleaxes, plus the metal handgunners and crossbowmen. I'd love to take a closer look, as I've go those ones myself and am puzzling over how best to do them as a unit.

Sadly I have none of the figures you mention in the post, Phil has more Perry Miniatures. On an unrelated note I have two more early Landsknecht pike blocks from TAG in the Lead Pimple and a further Command Stand of two figures from Bicorne. I got a great bargain at Penkridge Table Top Sale last Sunday, a number of Ian Weekly Battleground hard foam tent and marquees for £10. I’m busy rebasing and repainting these at the mo.

Nice looking camp scene?  What's cooking in the pot?

Love the Camp.  Is that a re-purposed TAG not-Blackadder in the background ?

Thanks! Of course you are right, it is the TAG set of three Black Adder- like figures. I got a free Henry VIII with them but can’t think how to repurpose him yet.

Sorry for not commenting lately, I've had a rather trying few months, health-wise. But I am right glad to see this project is still moving forward.

Great efforts - not Baldric looks particularly good.  You can tell it's Baldric because he appears to have lit the fire in the cooking pot rather than under it.  Shouldn't the smoke be coming from below the pot rather than from the pot itself?

Steam not smoke! It’s early Renaissance smokeless fuel! 😉

Thanks to all who visited or commented here or on my blog. If you are interested the whole project features in this month’s Wargames Illustrated.
