Title: Realscale Space Sharks
Post by: Suber on March 15, 2018, 08:19:17 PM
I've always liked the idea of Space Marines as they were presented in the fluff from WH40K 2nd Ed on; giant genetically altered monk warriors, towering over regular men, each one an army on its own. I've toyed with the idea of realscale marines for years and in fact I built a squad some years ago:

I of course couldn't use the regular rules for them, but that 'movie marines' silliness that appeared by... 5th ed? Quite cinematic and fun.

Anyway, I'm digressing before even started. Though the new Primaris marines stuff is perfect for realscale projects, I found I had been amassing bits for years in order to build a realscale force... So it would be rude to get rid of those! ;D So here it is my first experiment in this new project.

I took Marneus Calgar legs as a starting point:

I changed the approach I took with the Crimson Fists years ago and I used a terminator torso:

I have dismantled my Raptors army ('regular' space marines; I noticed years ago that I had too many marines. When you get to realise that, it means you have a problem :D). I'm keeping my Ultramarines Rogue Trader army and this new realscale force, so I won't be needing anything else. Liberating feeling.

To the point. I used bits from that army, as said...

And then I had to pick a Chapter. I thought of keeping the Raptors, but on a second thought I opted for starting a new army. Space Sharks (or Carcharodons, how you the young ones call them these days) got my eye. I didn't want red or bright blue marines, grey seemed a fin option. Besides, the new fluff gives them a Maori inspired aesthetics, so it was decided:

You can read Whetū on the greave, Maori for 'Star'. The front shield bears a Koru, a symbol of new beginnings and regeneration.

Ururoa is Maori for 'white shark', the Carcharodon carcharias, so it was the perfect word.

I painted a Moana sign on the cape, a symbol of sea. I thought it appropiate for a sea oriented culture (I didn't sing Disney's 'Moana' songs while painting it! ::))

These patterns are spear heads and shark teeth, traditional Maori warrior symbols:

Finally, a size comparison shot:

You can find it all on the blog (https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2018/03/when-new-became-old.html).

I have some crazy ideas for expanding the force. Still have to see if they are even viable... I guess I'll only discover it when I try!

That is a wonderful bit of conversion there, sir.
Lovely paintjob to top it all off too.
 :-* :-*

Even better as I am collecting plenty of Horus Heresy era marines as a basis for my own Carcharadons later this year.
Great inspiration, keep going.

I'm trying a new thing for this realscale nonsense. I'll use the new Space Hulk terminators and convert them into regular marines. Yes, I need this to be so complicated ;D

I'm starting with the Librarian, as I think it's the easiest mini of all...

Just cut the back part and repositioned the arms and bits...

...until I finally got this result:

I painted some Maori iconography on the kneepad. It is a Tiki, a symbol of the relation between men and gods; the mystic part sounded good for the pkyker guy:

I'm using Renedra bases, just copying Elbow's idea (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=89784.0) (Thanks mate!). In fact I rebased the Captain, here you have the both of them:

You can find a few more things on this on the blog (https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2018/04/space-sharks-realscale-librarian.html) ;).

I plan to make a Veteran squad and some characters from these minis, being as baroque as they are. Who knows how this will end...

It certainly did.
Nicely finished, sir.

I can't believe I haven't updated this thread for ages :(. Let me post a quick round of pics then.

I've been working on the Space Hulk terminators. So, for example, from this...

...I came to this:

Wich, once painted, translates into this:

You can see the size:

I got this other guy:

As he has some vials and stuff on his belt, I thought I could make an Apothecary out of him...

But I didn't envision the final result as I wanted it to be. So I changed my mind and got this other one...

And then tried this:

Why the strange pose? Because of this ;):

It makes more sense with some paint:

What happened then with the legs I didn't use? No problem, I can make something up...

I fotgot to take a pic of my original mini, so I have to steal this one from the internet. My starting point for the next one was this other termie:

Which turned into this:

More! I didn't need much to make this pose work:

I kept the way of the Maori inspiration...

Next one. The guy looking at his watch wasn't too menacing...

But with a couple of spiky blades he looks more Space Shark-ish:

Latest one so far:

Same attitude, different concept:

So the Squad is beginning to assemble:

This is so amazing. The finished product is so immaculate, really nice paint jobs. I think the medic with wounded marine is my favourites, I love a miniature that tells a story.

Just one more guy, this time a Chaplain. I used this Sarge as a starting point:

With some pieces from my old 2nd Ed Chaplain I got this:

That eventually turned into this:

I think I may have more characters than regular marines, hmmm...
