I'm once again in such a stage in which I start dozens of projects that later on take me months to finish. I started this one like a week ago, but I've been out of home some days and I totally forgot about posting in the forum.
My new silliness starts with a pair of Sentinel legs and a serum vial...
I was aiming for some kind of tech insectoid mount, following some Rogue Trader or the like inspiration for aesthetics...

I used this old Kislevite as the rider, I had cast the mini into oblivion for ages, so it was time to do something about that.

OK, I didn't plan it so well. Once I had all the greenstuff work done I realised the head should turn in the same direction as the mount's. So I had to cut and reposition it afterwards.

After some additional details, I finally came to this:

Everything about it can be found on the blog (https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2018/03/wasteland-walker-pt-1.html).
However, this very morning I have replaced the rider's head as I've been thinking about its background and I had an even sillier idea ;D. Let me upload the pics from the phone to the computer and I'll post them over here...
-
That's a great little build 8)
Looking at the first couple of pictures I didn't think it was going to work but it's turned out spot on.
-
Love it, love everything about it.
-
Nice conversion work - full of character.
-
Brilliant! :D
-
Awesome. I'm really keen to see this painted up.
-
That is creativity.
So is it painted yet?
-
Love it!
-
Thank you!
So is it painted yet?
Shamefully not yet :(. But here you have the pics as promised, as I made a change in the interpretation of the character of the rider by replacing the head. When doing all this I originally had no clear purpose for the mini. But I suddenly thought of a Knight-errant, quite a particular one. I looked for this head in my bits box...
...and turned into this:
So please let me introduce Don Qirixote of Manchae Prime :D:
Ahem.
;D
Hopefully some paint during the week.
-
Are you going to paint Rocinante on the side of the walker?
-
That’s a cool build! 8)
-
Being new to this genre, I had to wait for the primer before I could understand it; it looks really fantastic, and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished...
I really like the knight errant on there now: it gives it so much character...
-
Are you going to paint Rocinante on the side of the walker?
I was thinking of the Greek letter Rho and then the number 102, but in Roman numerals; so Rho-102 would be RhoCII ;D
-
A great combination of pose and detail. I'd be very interested in how you get the paint to stick to that type of plastic - so many interesting shapes but all seem to downright repel any primer I've tried or to have it flake off later.
-
Halfords do a grey plastic primer. That could work mr.westfalia.
I like the headswap, it adds more character to it and breaks away from the flat monopose.
-
:o
Wow, that idea is brilliant and yours skills, too. So much little details.
GREAT WORK. PAINT IT NOW, please.
-
Love it, love everything about it.
+1
Looking fwd to the paint.
-
Fantastic work. Your combination of bits is absolutely inspired!
-
Awesome stuff! Will he have some windmills to tilt at?
-
I've finally painted Don Quirixote and Rho-CII ;)

Somewhere in the Segementum Pacificus, in a place whose name I do not care to remember... ;D
You can find more pics of the process and some more (absurd) explanations on the blog (https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2018/04/a-change-of-plans-wasteland-walker-pt-2.html).
Awesome stuff! Will he have some windmills to tilt at?
Now that you mention it... ::)
I'm now thinking of the loyal esquire who travels with our hero, but at some moment I will have to design something in that fashion, sure... (Gasp, this is escaping out of control quite quickly!)
-
Top job 8)
-
Fantastic work!
-
Awesome
-
Excellent! :o
That’s what the best models do, they make you want to know the story behind them! What kind of planet does a guy dressed like thatcome from? Why does he ride around on a robot? What lead to this? What’s he hunting for?
-
Excellent, lovely paint job.
-
Excellent! :o

Exactly.
What a great creation! I want to know the answers to these things too.
-
Very nice! The colors are well done!
-
Simply brilliant! I love it. :-*
-
Wow! Stunning paint job and very characterful model. Even the robot is full of personality, like it's snuffling around to catch a scent.
-
Great stuff!
Well done.
tt43.
-
Very impressed with the PJ. I love yellow on robots.
-
Thank you all!
I have to put some work on it, but for the moment I can work with...
Somewhere in the Segementum Pacificus, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, a gentleman lived during M.35, one of those who has an energy lance and ancient power field on a rack and keeps a clapped-out technag and a rusty cyberhound for racing [...]. Some claim that his family name was Quirixada, or Querexada, for there is a certain amount of disagreement among the authors who write of this matter, although [...] this does not matter very much to our story; in its telling there is absolutely no deviation from the truth.
And so, let it be said that this aforementioned gentleman spent his times of leisure - which meant most of the year - reading data slates of Space Marines, Inquisitors, Rogue Traders and chivalry with so much devotion and enthusiasm that he forgot almost completely about the hunt and even about the administration of his estate; and in his rash curiosity and folly he went so far as to sell his land, his ships, land speeders and servitors in order to buy data slates of chivalry to read, and he brought as many of them as he could into his house; and he thought none was as fine as those composed by the worthy Richard of Priestley, because the clarity of his prose and complexity of his language seemed to him more valuable than pearls [...].
With these words and phrases the poor gentleman lost his mind [and] became so caught up in reading that he spent his nights reading from dusk till dawn and his days reading from sunrise to sunset, and so with too little sleep and too much reading his brains dried up, causing him to lose his mind. His fantasy filled with everything he had read in his books, psychic powers as well as combats, battles, challenges, wounds, armour save, lascannons, Orks, Eldar, and he became so convinced in his imagination of the truth of all the countless grandiloquent inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer.
So, in time, this Don Alonzo de Quirixada decided to clean some Imperial Guard armour of his ancestors, that had lain for ages forgotten in a corner, eaten with rust and covered with mould. He took his old techsteed Rho-102 (or Rho-CII, in Gothic numerals) and left his home in search of adventure, duels and undoing wrongs through the Galaxy...
:D :D :D
-
Simply wonderful! Great idea and excellent execution.
-
This is amazing!!
-
Wow, superb build and paint job too. 8) 8) 8)
I have one question: where is Sancho? :D
-
I have one question: where is Sancho? :D
He's the next one, haha! I'm undecided on him being a regular human or a Squat engineer ;D
-
Brilliant vibrant work! The paint job is really great and the fluff made me laugh, it’s a really nicely executed piece of work, Suber. I thought the steed body was going to suffer from lack of detail but you’ve really smashed it :)
-
This is art!
-
He's the next one, haha! I'm undecided on him being a regular human or a Squat engineer ;D
What about a 'droid, Sancho Panzer?
-
I missed this thread until now but I am very impressed with your work.a really unique and creative job. Well done.
-
Good timing ;)

-
Superb execution of an inspired concept :-* :-* :-*
-
Astonishing concept and work, Suber. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Excellent painting to complete an amazing creation.
Superb.
Me descubro ante vos.
-
Thank you all! I've started some work on Dapple, Sancho Panzer's mount. My first idea was using a pretty old Warmachine Deathripper as a starting point, but I had this other even sillier idea of using a Kinder egg (you know, those toys into egg-shaped chocolate). So, with the Deathrippers legs I'm starting like this:
You can see the size it has next to RhoCII:
I like the idea of making it chubby and short-legged, looks fun and into the role. I've begun to add some details...
But there is still a looong way ahead!
Good timing ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkRo5l8679g
Haha, I hadn't thought of that! I'm quite curious to see what's the movie like in the end after all these years!
-
That works 8)
-
Oh good, series 2 has begun on Suberflix :D :D 8) 8)
-
that is very inspiring indeed
-
It took me some time, but I've finished it! You saw some progress on the little beast, so let's go on.
Instead of a saddle, like the one on RhoCII, I built a full seat. This is a slow, quite mount, not a cybersteed. The head is from a serum vial again:
The idea of Sancho Panzer being a rogue Squat engineer was too funny to let it go. I didn't have any Squats, so this WHFB Dwarf had to do...
So I finally got this:
So please let me show you the Dynamic Appliance for Plural Purposes and Leverage Endeavours (D.A.P.P.L.E.) ;D
Let's spill some paint on it!
Ahem. Seriously, does anyone have the recipe for the dapple colour? ??? These two pics were taken within like ten seconds. The same mini, different light. Sigh.
This is the final result:
"What Gargants?" said Sancho Panzer.
"Those thou seest there," answered his master, "with the long arms, chainswords and guns, and some have them nearly two leagues long."
"Look, your worship," said Sancho; "what we see there are not Gargants but moisture vaporators, and what seem to be their arms are the sails that turned by the wind make the engine go."
"It is easy to see," replied Don Quirixote, "that thou art not used to this business of adventures; those are Ork Gargants; and if thou art afraid, away with thee out of this and betake thyself to prayer while I engage them in fierce and unequal combat."
So saying, he gave the spur to his steed RhoCII, heedless of the cries his squire Sancho sent after him, warning him that most certainly they were moisture vaporators and not Ork Gargants he was going to attack. He, however, was so positive they were Gargants that he neither heard the cries of Sancho, nor perceived, near as he was, what they were, but made at them shouting, "Fly not, cowards and vile beings, for a single knight attacks you."
:D
You can find the whole process on the blog (https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2018/05/dapple-wasteland-walkers-pt-3.html).
I don't feel I have the strenght to make a full Quixote ambientation into a RT-like setting right now, but oh, doesn't it sound like fun? :D Some day, some day...
-
Brilliant!
-
Sancho Panzer
Very good. Very good, indeed!
And now, to complete the pun, you must build the steed Rustinante.
-
Fantastic :-*
-
Great work. A very suitable pairing.
-
Impressive detail and execution of painting. Well done.
-
So awesome!
-
Those are great!
-
Fantastic! :o I didn't think it was possible to top the first one, but you have! Great work!
-
This is genious, Suber!!! :-*
-
Very nice.
-
Awesome Suber. Absolutely amazing. It has to be you that mixed Universal literature with post-apoc/sci-fi. Ave Suber!
-
Super stuff!
Well done.
tt43.
-
That is just great!
It's a grand design, the tail winch is brilliant, and the bandana just fits the bill. :D 8) 8) 8)
-
Wow, these are great!!! :-*
-
Oh my, what's breeding here?!
Really cool walker(s), very well done & painted.
Did you write somewhere what the walker does? What's its function? To me, the barrel form suggests some sort of liquid/gas container.
-
Thank you all! But oh, you can see there is no mystery to it, it's all made using rubbish an bits, anyone can build that! The key to it: just wire the damn thing up! :D Anything will look better covered in dirty wires ;D
I didn't think of a clear original purpose for any of the walkers. One could assume they both were used in some kind of agricultural duties. D.A.P.P.L.E. looks particularly like an auxiliary vehicle for multitask works. You can use it to plough, to tow broken machinery, for refueling purposes or any other kind of long-distance assistance. Both mounts are far tougher than they look :D, they are about to live some adventures along the galaxy ::)
-
Back to this project! Not yet to expand the Don Quirixote universe (is that even a thing?), but to repeat some stuff. Some weeks ago I was commissioned by a pal to make him another walker just in the same style than the first one I did. Fortunately enough I still kept another serum vial:
Though following the same basic steps, I thought it could be interesting having more exposed engine parts.
I went this way...
But my pal told me he didn't want a generic wasteland walker, but another sci-fi Quixote. Say no more.
I added some other different details from the first model. Pedals for the rider, for example, or external wiring, suggesting that the inner cooling system doesn't work properly, as one could expect from such an old techsteed.
So, the two of them compared...
Here you can find a few more pics:
http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com/2018/08/don-quirixote-rides-again.html
My pal will be painting it, and for sure he'll make an outstanding work. I'll let you know when that happens...
-
Most excellent 8)
-
Wonderfully Gilliam-esque!
-
Some of the best work I've ever seen on the LAF. 8) :-*
-
These are way cool. Really good job! Very coherent conversions overall.
-
Just the things to confuse some role players,
especially if they have never read the book.
Very nice work.
-
Nice job.
-
Epic modelling !
-
:o Amazing. I love your stuff. please expand with more and more.
-
Oh wow, I'm only seeing this now. Amazing stuff.
-
Just caught this thread :o :o :o
Amazing modelling and painting :-* :-* :-*
Love the story theme, keep it going please?
-
Thank you all! The idea of expanding this and building a whole range of Quixotesque creations is quite tempting :D
-
I just stumbled upon the thread as I was browsing. Absolutely top-notch from start to finish :o, the execution of the idea is simply marvellous and the paint job is really 'popping'. Now I shall go and mope at my own feeble efforts lol.
-
Oh, wow, that's beautiful. I look forward to seeing it painted...
-
That second Quixote could not be completed without a second Sancho, of course. So this was the other half of the commission. While my first idea was following my steps and doing a 'classical' ride with a saddle on the neck...
... I was convinced by a friend to do otherwise and put the driver on the back. With that in mind I used an old WH40K2 warbike:
Look at that glorious fat waist. Remember, 'panza' is Spanish for belly.
If you give the pic a really close look, you may see the contact key ;D
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/proxy/fBBuUBVRlBwnFpCDYUMSIrBqKI-mzfiMkVDcmRYjReUtT3_vNRxNT3kDraL_D-Lf09M-NwTJ=s0-d)
So, cutting the dapple's neck and repositioning the whole thing...

From now on it's all a matter of adding stuff and details until you get something like this:

You have it all on the blog, with a couple of additional WIP pics :P:

As soon as my pal paints them I'll be sure to share ;)
-
So cool 8)
-
:o Really outstanding modelling, not least in your imagination of these wonderful wanderers of the wastelands...
-
I love your understatement of the difficulty,
'From now on it's all a matter of adding stuff and details until you get something like this'
Wonderful work.
-
Nice balance you've achieved on the second Sancho.
-
Very nice.
-
That is indeed pretty cool. Very creative!
-
Absolutely brilliant creations. :o
From now on it's all a matter of adding stuff and details until you get something like this:

-
Snorted tea out of my nose there, Cait Sidhe. So thanks for that.
Those walkers are marvelous.
-
lol lol lol
Thank you all, guys. The process is fun, and really pretty easy. I'm simply way too lazy to make difficult stuff ;D
-
Excellent modelling and painting.
-
Amazing work, Cant wait to see more!
-
You're creating such a wonderful world with these marvellous machines! :-* You should think of making these from scratch so you can cast them and sell them.
-
What AndyM said.
Beatiful pieces Suber

Absolutely brilliant creations. :o

These walkers are awesome! 8)
(Good thing I haven't sold those Sentinel sprues with all the other 40k stuff...)
-
Thank you all, you are very kind, gentlemen :D
You're creating such a wonderful world with these marvellous machines! :-* You should think of making these from scratch so you can cast them and sell them.
Haha, thanks, but I think that's way out of my league!
(Good thing I haven't sold those Sentinel sprues with all the other 40k stuff...)
It's one of the most versatile sets ever. Those legs have endless possibilities. I could buy them by dozens!
