Title: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on April 03, 2018, 03:57:24 PM
I'm sure some people recalled my older thread, where I assembled and painted many fantasy miniatures with the vague hopes of finally finishing a proper dungeon crawl.

Update: that didn't happen.

So, after a long break from doing much fantasy stuff, it's back to the grind.  The silly thing?  I sold off a bunch of fantasy miniatures I wasn't happy with, and have started replacing them.  I hope to get back into more fantasy stuff (playing Mordheim and maaaaaybe actually working on my dungeon crawl).

I'll begin this thread by re-posting a couple of the last images from the old thread, coupled with some new ones.

Random 'evil' henchmen...

Dwarfs, and snakes, and witches oh my!

The snake is from the Conan boardgame by Mythic.

Nice stuff. Are they mostly dip painted with extra highlights?

I do have to ask though why does the two headed ogre have an enormous log strapped to his back?

Thanks guys, and sorry I misread the question above - yes the witch is from the newer Reaper line and it's friggin' beautiful.  Highly recommended.

The log on the back of the ogre is banded like some kind of battering ram?  I guess...  I haven't even bothered opening my Massive Darkness box nor reading any of the monster cards so I haven't a clue if that's what it does in the game.

I've got three more beasties to work on, and then some smaller figures.  Expect more soon.

Yeah, the Kraken is a favourite of mine - wish I had more excuse to use it (hell, any of the stuff posted...).  I'm working on a few more models, and I hope this thread becomes busier in the future.  Most importantly I'm desperate to find a game worth playing that prevents me from producing one myself.

Dwarf gunners are from Black Tree.  Great sculpts, but typically questionable service from Black Tree (always feels like a risk when I order from them).

Update from today; the cockatrice (Cockatrix from Massive Darkness)

It's also one of the Kickstarter exclusives I believe, so you'd have to just poach one on eBay - shouldn't be too hard.  I managed to get a Minotaur I was desperate to have from Mythic Battles on eBay for around $12 shipped.

At a glance, it's a bit pricey at $20 at the moment.  Maybe keep an eye on it for the future?

Only been nearly a year since I updated this, but 2018 wasn't a super productive year for me.  I've also been in the Fantasy doldrums, basically throwing a fit because I don't have a good game to play with them.

However...it's 2019 and I'm also off to a slow start.  But, I picked up these lovely Skeletons from Games Workshop's boardgame Shadespire.  The game looks a bit "meh", but these figures were great for about $20.

The way you use washes is inspirational. Re rules, what about Vanguard by Mantic to pull some of these together?

I'm just slowly amassing a large fantasy collection with nothing proper to use it with.  I'll check out Vanguard, but thus far nothing has really hit home.  I have used the collection for a couple of various games thus far (Mordheim, etc.).

Your Underworld Skellies look fantastic. The paintjob on the bases almost looks like it has a subtle glow. Is that the lighting for the pic or did you do some kind of cool drybrushing and/or washing?
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread

Nope, nothing special, just drybrushing.  Maybe part of the white-balance in the photo editor, etc.

Not one that I've checked out.  I'm mainly interested in either:

A) An excellent long-term dungeon crawl with heavy role playing aspects (without being a role playing game)
B) A fun and interesting skirmish game, possibly with long term campaign aspects.

Yeah, the basic mechanics are from FG. The major improvement (at least IMO) is that all your characters can develop, as opposed to just the Wizard and Apprentice (Heritor and Warden).

Another game Suggestion:
Dragon Rampant or Songs of Blades and Heroes. Both excellent engines giving smooth gaming without having to look up rules in books too often.
I like those best für casual gaming and for presentations at fairs and conventions, too.

(blows dust off)

Been a while...been crushing other hobby projects (amassing obnoxiously large armies for 40K even though I don't play very often).  However, with a new abundance of free time (much to my chagrin) I will be renewing my efforts to develop a dungeon crawl to make use of my growing box of misfit toys.

To that end, I found a sprue of GW skeletons I'd quite forgotten I owned and slapped some together last night - to add to the lovely Underworld ones from the previous page.

I will be doing more fantasy minis over the next few months, excited to see what I have left hiding.

PS: Nothing like dip to show you the sprue joint you missed when cleaning minis...of course.

It's from the Conan boardgame.

Loving these skeletons. I must get some more skeletons I feel I have an obligation to collect them considering they were my first WFB army.

The Underworlds ones were top notch (in my opinion).  More ornate obviously, but sadly only seven isn't enough for a dungeon crawl encounter so I rounded it to 12 using the other ones.  I think I could figure out a couple more if I dug around on that sprue (I had previously used it for some other model stuff).

I got halfway through some goblins tonight but Christmas pudding they're tiny (Tre Manor reaper ones).  Not sure if I'll survive.  My eyesight isn't what it used to be.

I have some Redbox Tre Manor goblins. They are super small. When I based them on 20mm bases they looked like GW goblins based on 25's (thinking scale wise compared to the base) Very nice goblins though and I actually like the titchyness of them. Makes them look more mischievous.
I might have to spring for those Underworld ones before they go OOP.

Tried six of the twelve (Tre Manor) Reaper Goblins I picked up.  Sadly when I bought them I didn't know how small they were...and my aren't good enough for this kind of thing.  I'll try to do the other six, but I'm really not feeling these guys - despite enjoying the aesthetic.

The other six..and I enjoyed these even less (the archers being even smaller with more details).  I almost gave up on them, but now they're done and I can move on and forget about goblins for a bit.  These would have been marvelous had they been about 20-30% larger.  Tre Manor is a great sculptor but he doesn't sculpt to help the painter much!

After almost losing my will to ever paint again after the goblins...I painted...another goblin.

This guy was normal sized though, and I enjoyed painting him (super fast and easy).  I also painted my favourite Minotaur sculpt (from a Mythic Game's board game)

Most importantly, after 17 years of misfires...I may have landed on a vague concept for the dungeon crawl game I've been building.  Playtested a new idea this weekend and it was pretty fun.  Will maybe start down this road finally.

(and no, not using my sexy Dwarven Forge stuff for playtesting - way too time intensive and this is very early days, just testing our some core mechanical concepts)
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Daniel36 on June 11, 2019, 11:30:48 AM
Honestly, sometimes I wish I stuck with 2D tiles. Maybe not as sexy, but by the stars easier to store, set up and play with... Even now, it looks great!
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on June 12, 2019, 05:58:47 PM
Yep, there will be room for both.  For quick pick-up games, 2D tiles are far better, particularly with larger miniatures.  Every now and then I'll bust out the full 3D mega dungeon (as annoying as 2" hallways can be).  Also for rulebook pictures and promotional stuff, you can't beat it.

I think, in retrospect, if I had the choice to do over again, I'd go with some of the luxury flat tiles that you see people doing.  Really intricate base tiles, but no walls.  It's somewhere on lead adventure, but the guys who do the amazing WHQ tiles in nicer 3D style with gorgeous paint, etc.  That's probably the best method.  Particularly if you added some random chunks of 3D wall just for visual impact.

I admit I can do "more" with my dwarven forge, and I'll be having some levels so a visual game should look stunning.  These were test pics I took a while ago (read: five years back)

I was going to say the exact same things; lovely miniatures and ask where's the cockatrice from? It looks like the Massive Darkness one?

It's really nice to see those dungeon shots, very nice work.

Yep, it's the Cockatrix from Massive Darkness - it's actually the miniature which convinced me to get in on the Kickstarter.  I never even opened the actual box game (sitting on the shelf behind me).  It was for a half dozen or so of the bigger creatures.  I have a few more to paint.  Flogged the rest on eBay.  And yes...I saved the Unicorn. :D

Yeah I don't recall if it was a KS exclusive, but it was definitely an add-on.  Sometimes you can find them for reasonable money on eBay (the monsters, not the Cockatrix as I haven't searched for it!) ...actually at a glance, yeah doesn't really exist but it is from a boxed expansion.  That's a shame.  The minotaur above (my favourite minotaur) was from another Mythic game.  I managed to get it for $9 on eBay though so I was super happy!

Ugh...orcs.

So I previously had painted some Wargames Factory orcs, and didn't much care for the look.  I sold them off, and then tried to find suitable replacement ones.  I picked up some cheap Bones Orcs on sale because they were Tre Manor sculpts and I love his stuff.  Well they're Bones material and I really didn't enjoy painting these guys.

So of course, the day I'm finishing their bases I stumble upon the Reaper "Dungeon Dweller" line, a small line but one of really nice classical style sculpts...in metal, and not super-mega-expensive.  So...I ordered the replacements for these three before I even finished painting them!  I'll try to flog these dudes to soak up some of the cost, but I never thought it'd be hard to find good looking quality orcs!

Anyway...three new temporary residents of the dungeon.  Bones is really not ideal even on larger 28mm figures.  It's hard to get at the mold lines and the teeth on the big guy are just a nightmare I couldn't clean up.  Thankfully the inbound replacements are metal!

They were sprayed Army Painter Skeleton Bone as a primer, and then just dipped.  Probably a mistake since 90% of the models were not flesh, but...you live, you learn.

Replacement orcs, heyoooo!

I picked up some rather lovely metal "Dungeon Dweller" series orcs from Reaper (Bobby Jackson sculpts I think).  Hugely impressed and maaaaaan, so much nicer to paint than the other Reaper Bones ones.  Really enjoyable and lovely minis with just the right low-fantasy look I was hoping for.  Will grab one or two more blisters at some point (sadly on a few options exist!).

Better looking in person, I promise!

Also knocked out an additional hero I had sitting around in a blister.  A nice Tre Manor sculpt (only oddity being the long and curved grip on the sword...)

Again, the simplistic low-fantasy stuff I'm more interested in.  Nice addition.

Another day of playtesting finally, really happy with the results thus far.  Had a mad, difficult and intense couple of dungeons.

This second picture sums up the day pretty well.  First adventure was tough, but the Hero Party survived with only one of four heroes put out of action.  They had the crowns to pay for his recovery afterwards.

The second adventure...was a bit rough.  The picture shows the wounded Dwarf and the Warrior both turning tale to flee when confronted in the Objective Room.

Elf: Ripped to pieces by Ghouls (who were actually chasing the Wizard)
Wizard: Turned to putty by a Stone Golem which ambushed him...
Dwarf: Almost escaped the dungeon, only to be eaten by spiders a few paces from the stairwell.
Warrior: Survived to...recruit new adventurers.

This party was destroyed by some really poor rolls and unfortunate encounters.

Some more dungeon beasties.  A Reaper Bones snake that didn't turn out great (forgot to thin my dip!), and a really fun-to-paint Orc big boss dude from Reaper.  A big hunk of metal, but fun.

No problemo, and thanks Hobgoblin.  I admit...I'm a holistic gamer and it pains me a bit to play with a test dungeon and hand-written cards, but...needs must.

I have received colour coded dice this week, a few more miniatures, started work on a giant...hoping to get a load more baddies painted up, and have been working on a ton of encounter cards and a lot of art....sooo much photoshop work.  It's fun to be this motivated about something again, particularly something like a dungeon crawl where I have an excuse to buy any Reaper minis I want and paint them :D

Had another playtest today with some new players - some cracks were found, but we're plodding on!

Good game, in which the heroes were dispatched to locate the source of people gone missing from their garderobes :D (toilets) in the castle.

Got to use the lovely sea beastie from the Conan Kickstarter.  This creature created and used tentacles to grab and drag the heroes to the maw...they were able to defeat it before being devoured.  It was fun watching them scramble around while the Wizard was hurling fireballs (until he got dragged into the room!).

Thanks, Bloggard.

Had a playtest this evening.  Went pretty well.  Highlights:

-My Thief nearly being eaten alive by spiders...we determined he's an arachniphobe now.
-Tod, a Man-at-Arms ally to the Elf was absolutely vital in our group surviving.
-The Dwarf managed to dig a heck of a lot of precious metals out of the walls while exploring...
-We freed a captive lady who escaped...helping our campaign points.
-In the final room we drew three encounter cards: 1) treasure (hurrah!), 2) Brigands, and 3) Crone.  We paid off the Brigands and that left us just the Crone...whom Tod stabbed in the gut with a spear...while she was fireballed by the Wizard and the Elf finished her off with an arrow to the eye socket.

Good times.

I did another barbarian today - and it was a figure which immediately made me think of the old Chaos Archer from Battlemasters (a Warhammer Fantasy style boardgame from the 90's made with Milton Bradley(?) and GW).

I asked around on Facebook for a quick picture of the box art, and then tried to do a slightly subtle homage to the original figure.

I ran into an absolute disaster with the flesh tones :(

I don't detail paint, so I paint a base colour and I dip...just casual speed painting.  However, for several years I've been using Vallejo Cork Brown as my base coat for generic flesh.  I finally ran out of my first bottle and picked up another...and they don't match.  I added some Rose Pink to balance it out, but I may have to create a mix, as the new cork brown doesn't share the soft pink tone of my previous bottle.

:( Sad panda.  Time to clean out a spare bottle...

I'll look into it.  I've found most skin tones to be...awful for skin tones (as weird as that is).  I may even own Heavy Skin Tone, but I'll definitely take a look.  I also have to see how it fits under the sepia-tone of dipping.

I realize that some of my Vallejo paints could be up to 15+ years old, so it's inevitable that paint formulas may have changed, but I've had the same thing happen to me with VMC paints that I've gotten accustomed to  using for certain things. It's not the end of the world, but it is always slightly irritating.

Hey Neun,

Haven't had any sessions using the proper dungeon lately, but as the game progresses and is ironed out, it'll show up more often - and you'll see a load of pics :D

Cosmo,

Yeah, here's the silly thing.  I looked up the Heavy Skin Tone mentioned above, and it looks like a dead ringer for my older bottle of Cork Brown.  So much so, that I wonder if I had a mis-labeled bottle or something.  My Cork Brown would have been maybe 8-10 years old though, so it is possible the formula changed a tad.  Will be ordering a bottle of the skin tone to try.

The bottle I have of cork brown looks almost exactly the same shade as heavy skin tone, the cork is perhaps a shade paler. The Vallejo ranges are so large, and the naming often a bit odd, that I have ended up with various paints that are unintentionally similar to each other.

Yeah my new bottle of Cork Brown is "more" brown, and a little darker than the pinker/paler one I had before...so who knows.  Time to order some more paints and see what I can figure out.  Failing that...I'll just mix the Rose Pink /new Cork Brown.

I gots to have my fleshes!

I very much like the result you get on your figures from the dip.

You mentioned in an older post that you once forgot to thin your dip...  would you be able to go into a little more detail about your dipping recipe?

Army painter Strong Tone thinned down at a certain ratio perhaps?

Thanks thanks thanks!
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on September 14, 2019, 01:04:10 AM
Thanks, guys.

RE: Dark,

I do use Army Painter Strong Tone dip.  However, without fail the dip will eventually start to thicken (just from moisture evaporating, even when I seal the tins well!).  This is counteracted using mineral spirits (just as you would use to thin varnish which is what dip is more or less).  I don't measure it normally, but I pour a small amount in most times.

However, after doing this for so long the dip will start to lose some of its "dip" properties.  The two females above are a good example of this.  The dip is old and not terribly thinned...and on top of that the primer coat was a bit "meh".  The result is you can see the dip didn't seat or smoothly coat the minis like other ones.  Like anything it just ends up needing to be replaced eventually.

I'm a cheapskate though and I try my best to get as much out of a can as I possibly can (which is normally quite a bit!).  A fresh can of dip is often far better than one I've been using for six months and thinning over and over.

PS: Dip likes sharp edges for it to pool or drip off of.  The lighter the detail the less the dip works.  It's particularly good on crisp newly cut plastics or well chiseled metal miniatures.  On softer detail it just doesn't do much.  The two females above, while nice miniatures have very shallow details and it all combined for two figures I'm less than enthusiastic about.

Thanks!  I'll have to give that a try.

I've always liked the idea of shading and sealing in one step but i need to remind myself to dial up the brightness of the colours I use.

Also I always balk at the price of a small can of army painter dip.

You can find a 80% solution with some various wood varnish/stains.  I've tried a few but never found one which worked just like AP (and I agree the price sucks, it's why I end up sticking with one can too long!).

The other big thing is to find a suitable way to rid the model of excess dip.  Some people wring the models, some put them on drills and spin them in a can, etc.  I use small shreds of paper towel.  Dip the model and let it drip off - then hold it in the pliers and carefully wick away excess dip with small torn bits of paper towel.  If you don't rid the model of enough excess dip (harder if your dip becomes thicker), you can end up with large ugly pools around feet, knees, etc.

Like every other hobby thing it's all about figuring it out.  You'll screw up some minis and then figure it out and become more comfortable with it.  It does absolutely sepia-wash or tone-down the figures.  Some people go back and touch up the models after the dip for some highlights - I rarely do this, but it can add quite a bit.

Some extra stuff: A sorceress, a silly (ugly sculpt!) six-legged Pack rat, and I chopped/repainted a pair of terrain pieces to make floating stones/portals.

Most of the larger (tall) book cases and weapon racks, etc. are from Thomarillion, sold by Ziterdes in Germany (though available from a variety of retailers on eBay).  If you just eBay "Dwarven Forge" you'll actually find a ton of Thomarillion stuff listed.

Eeek, the mould line on the female elf's shoulder. Pet hate knee jerk reaction, but you need to be especially careful to do proper clean up if you're dipping.
Otherwise, good stuff.

The tiles were/are a superb quick and easy travel dungeon - sadly they look to have disappeared from production many years ago...replaced with nothing of an equivalent value/quality.  There are quite a few MDF tile/dungeon sets you can buy but you'd have to paint them.

Biggest news...my first test print of the initial 215 cars has been made, so...time to break the game and ruin it for six months to see what works/doesn't.

The plague doctor (there is a male and female version) are from the superb Dungeon Dwellers line from Reaper.  Having handled and painted several of them, they're extremely CAD designed, in a good way (I'd be shocked if they're hand sculpted).  really crisp and simple details.  Lovely to paint.

Reaper is pretty hit or miss depending on sculptors, but the Dungeon Dweller stuff has been absolutely excellent.  The lady plague doctor is my option for the female version of the Thief.

I bought some reaper models years ago but the were dreadful to paint so I passed on them,,

Lately bought some bones and I ma very happy with them but they are budget line and have some issues.
But those looks good (them being pair make them more attractive as I am thinking about them being wizard for Frostgrave)

Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on September 24, 2019, 01:28:15 AM
Yeah, Reaper has...a TON of sculptors doing work for them.  I've had a couple of turds, and a couple of gorgeous sculpts.  Tre Manor's stuff for Reaper is excellent, and the Bobby Jackson stuff I've had is excellent.

My main issue is that I'm a dipper...so if the finish on the model is kinda rough (occasionally on some hand-sculpted metals), or the detail is very light, the dip doesn't take/work.  You can see this on some of the lady figures up above.  The details are super thin/fine...and the dip doesn't show or hold/pool.  I can't always tell this when I'm ordering minis.  It's why some of the old Wargames Foundry miniatures are so excellent.  Some sculptors really sculpt so that painting is easier.  Large overhangs, crisp cuts, slightly exaggerated details, etc.

You just have to poke around and figure out who sculpts for the way you like to paint.

Yeah
This pair robes are perfect match for FG cultist bodies.

I avoid the dip but I prefer deeper details too. Painting Malifaux was a torture despite me liking the models a lot. I have to look for the details  on the nets sometimes during the painting.

A brutal day of playtesting...

We ran two quests, basically a simple eight-room dungeon.  The objective was: get out the other side, alive.  In the first quest we ran our existing hero party which had been through two or three other quests (had a bit of cash, had some skills, traits, items, etc.)

First room we encounter a Wyvern and a bunch of ratmen...we defeat them with minimal issues.

In the next chamber, the shit hits the fan.  Our saga scale elevates to level two and we encounter a Giant, while also being ambushed by Ghouls
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-icsB9ko5Crw/XZFLPsFB5BI/AAAAAAAAFQ0/7iZB5_qxTb8nC5Go11gUUvpCBDUEr0bYwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_20190929_145456.jpg)

We burn a bunch of luck and extra items to bash through the Ghouls real quick (though they took their toll), and then we fled...our plan was simple: outpace the Giant (if you put a full zone between you and the enemy they disappear into the dark, regenerating (but they stay in that zone)

This meant we had to hope the next room was easy or empty and we could make haste and get the hell out...

This didn't happen.  We ran into an Ogre and Lizardmen...in a chamber which neutered our Wizard's casting abilities...our beloved man-at-arms, Tod tried to delay the Giant without success...my Thief was smeared by an Ogre's club...that Ogre then threw a Lizardman at the dwarf, killing him.

So...they all died.  That's the only way a hero party perishes in the game, if all heroes die in a dungeon.  So we started a new hero party!

They lasted six chambers...

Abysmal rolling, a Thief who took three wounds while searching for treasures...and rolling '1' when healing herself...a Barbarian coward, rolling consistent 1's and failing to do much...and after fighting through a wave of Zombies, a deadly Vampyre, etc...the party was just bleeding out.  This is when a Dragon, a Gloom Serpent and Cave Spiders jumped them.  There was no point in playing it out - the party was consumed immediately.

Overall, really good playtest.  Some stuff came up, some issues.  These were some of the worst luck games yet, as opposed to some which have been far too lucky/easy.  So, many more games needed to see if it all balances out.

Yep, I've never bought into a Bones thing, and still don't find Bones Black to be up to the standard of metals, but seeing the Dungeon Dweller line on the Kickstarter, I'll probably throw $50 at it.  It's my favourite mini line in a long time.

Two at the moment, half-painted, and one more en route from eBay.  Got a few in the shopping cart.  I stopped painting mine because I wasn't super fond of them.  They're far better than normal Bones, and I think I'd be fine with them as baddies or NPCs, but for hero figures, the detail is still not up to par.  One of mine is sharper than the other (and the one en route looks even more sharp...but that's an online photo).

As usual, I think the stuff will shine even more the bigger the miniatures.  I've got my eye on a big crocodile thing in Bones Black, but I don't "need" it, so it's not ordered yet.

I humbly disagree. I personally agree that Bones Black is heads above standard Bones. But i think the Bones Black are pretty alright. From the painters i have seen on the various groups, and what they have done with figs from that line i they do just alright. The monk or ogre that Chris Spotts did for example, blows up my skirt.
Equal with metal? Nope, i am confident i can say no for the most part. But it is early in its life and only getting better. I am excited to see the new releases monthly to add to my collection.
I await the current release for a few reasons. One is, the Axebeak is better to be turned into mounts for different genres.
But i respect your position and hope you change you mind to paint more goodies to share.

I didn't get pics, but the Stone Golem nearly smashed the Thief.  The Thief is fast and can (on occasion) move through enemy models.  So the Thief is often used to draw away the big slow creatures (like the Stone Golem).  However, I spent several turns back up, and hid inside the staircase...where the Stone Golem followed.  Then I continued to not roll the action dice needed to move through him...he came within one space of pinning me and smashing me to bits!

Good times.

As with some other stuff I do, if it gets to the point where I'm really happy with it - the "print to order" stuff may be made available to people.  If not I'll just enjoy the game with friends and occasionally run it at conventions, etc.

Yep, the tiles are from the "old" D&D tile set. I recently purchased the re-launched one which came out a year or two ago, and was pretty disappointed.  The original set was incredibly useful.  The newer "dungeon" set is far less useful - though it makes a good companion to the old one!

The older set was full of large tiles and rooms, and was a bit more simple, but far more versatile.  The newer box includes far too many small pieces, cave sections, etc.  It's much harder to do a large simple dungeon room which is a shame!

An evil wizardfella:

Also, received and based some clear plastic Reaper minis for use as Wraiths:

I'm way too shit at painting spiritual or aethereal stuff so they're staying in their tinted plastic.

I did strap them to a box and light them for some pictures used on the dungeon cards:

Hadn’t seen them previously... it’s an excellent time to be building a fantasy project with all the options that are now available.

Yep, it's the first time in ages that numerous companies are producing quality Fantasy kits in plastic.  Frostgrave has maybe 10 plastic kits, Oathmark has five or six, and Fireforge is releasing their "not" Game of Thrones kits.  Shieldwolf also has a few kits (not a huge fan of those, though).

Kit-bashing between them, and combining them with Fireforge historical kits, etc.  Loads of options.

In the race to 120 miniatures by the end of the year, I did these two dungeon crawl figures.  One is a really nice little Reaper Arabian-esque noble, and the barbarian caster lady from the Shadespire Barbarian box.

While not entirely dungeon-crawl based...this is where my progress for the year sits:

Thanks, Rick.  I started keeping this collage-style image last year, so eventually I hope to have several pages where I can see "at a glance" what I managed to paint each year.  Doesn't include terrain or building tables, etc.

Nice terrain and figures.  I am especially interested in the simple grey-tone basing.  It clearly works well in your dungeon setting, but I imagine it would not look out of place on a grass mat, in a forest  or even inside a building. I might change my basing!

Post by: Elbows on December 31, 2019, 06:44:53 AM
Thanks, kind fellows.

Regarding the basing, it was definitely a...weird choice, but this entire Fantasy collection has been geared toward one thing; the dungeon crawl.  My other miniatures for other games are given a more generic brown/grass tufts style basing.

I was playing a bit of Mordheim, but even then I was using a ruined cobblestone style mat so it looked okay, but yeah on a grass mat they'd look a bit odd/out-of-place.

For their main purpose though, and because I'm actually using photos of them in the dungeon for rules/card images, etc....the crumbled dungeon bases are it :D

The Warrior and Wizard are left behind by the Dwarf who flees...they awaken an angry Wyvern and escape by the skin of their teeth.  The Elf...he perished in the dark, stabbed by goblins.

This was the mess of a table after the game:

Thanks, it was a quick "toss this out without thought" kind of build.

I am excited to build a proper dungeon in the future though.  I have a lot of DF stuff and will be ordering some more (more interesting bits, more doors, traps, elevation pieces, etc.).  Right now I game on a table that has other uses so I can't spend an evening setting up a table for the following day most of the time.

There is a LOT you can do with the stuff I have, so some time I'll have to take a proper crack at it.  I'm flirting with the idea of buying a nice Ziterdes hard foam Tavern as well just...because. :D

No major plans for that at the moment.  I have a decent group here obliging me with testing, and when it's further along I may send a couple copies to friends around the country, etc.

Right now it's a pretty versatile game that seems to lean toward the right amount of difficulty...but many more games will be needed.  The goal is probably to be done by the end of 2020 (with the basic game, not my collection/dungeon or possible expansions).

Thanks guys,

With regards to the game...it's my usual fare; I build a game I want to play - but because I insist on top quality appearances/etc. I put a lot of effort into the cards, and components.  Because I use print-on-demand stuff for my games, it only makes sense to release it to the public if it's "solid" enough.  This means the games are not written with wide appeal or mass-market goals/aims.

At the rate I'm going it is likely the game would be available by the end of 2020, and I'll be sure to post up some overviews of it when it's closer to that.

I did another couple of games this weekend - though I'm excited by the second version of my cards should arrive by week's end!

The party starting its second (and final...) quest:

Our party perishes attempting to enter the final room and escape via the staircase...

I'll expect another 2-3 versions before it's properly ironed out.

Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on January 26, 2020, 04:33:10 AM
Thanks guys,

Just a heads up - Krass ships with a different sword.  It was a small metal joint I wasn't wanting to deal with so I gave him a random skeleton hand/sword (and picked a mediocre sword!).

The dungeon did indeed have a couple of options, but at the end our Wizard was going to try to escape in order to save the party (if one Hero survives the other Heroes survive as well, albeit while losing all of their money, items, armour, treasure, etc.).  The other exit was actually in the room with the giant...so he decided to try to run all the way back out of the tavern.

One of the game mechanics is that a Hero Party activates a random encounter whenever they roll certain dice - this is infinitely easier when the party is small...or a single hero. This mechanic is intentional, in order to keep the party relatively close and not have everyone running off on their solo adventures.  The Wizard actually ran into a Sorcerer in the Tavern...fell back into the caverns to ready himself for the fight...where he triggered the spiders.

The Quest room had actually had a giant chained up by a Goblin King.  We were so busted up we decided to free the giant (using keys we had located earlier) hoping he would kill the Goblin King...  Little did we know he'd attack everyone.  So he kicked my Thief across the room, killing him and then started chasing the Goblin King...who was chasing our Wizard.  It was a bad time. :D

PS: Regarding the components, thanks!  That is the goal...even if it's a simple game I've designed to run for friends I always want the presentation to be top notch.  I'm a one-man army when it comes to make the games, but I just spend a lot of time trying to get the stuff to look professional and exciting.  It's a part of the game, seeing good looking or attractive components.
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: beefcake on January 26, 2020, 08:44:59 AM
I completely agree. You need the components to look good. I've done similar for the old Warhammer quest. I think I may have used a photo of one of your models in it (used internet images) I imagine your background images are from your own models?
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on January 26, 2020, 04:51:10 PM
Yep, mainly because I can't afford to buy art.  I'd love to have a gorgeous old-school art look or something cool...but photos of my own miniatures are free.  The cards are small enough that my "okay" painting is enough to get by.  It does mean, however, that I need to paint/build every single thing that I want in the game...which is time consuming. :D
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread

Yet motivating I'm sure. I've not painted anything for a good few months (other hobby aspects taking precedence)
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread

I may be stagnating painting figures, but an order from Dwarven Forge showed up and...I painted it.

A relatively boring order consisting of a bunch of elevation pieces, so I can start with some variety inside the dungeon.

An hour or two later, it was done:

Not at all.  Their original resin stuff was nicely painted, the newer stuff is...supremely mediocre with regard to paints.  It also doesn't match the older resin stuff which I have.  I can't fathom paying the "painted" price for Dwarven Forge stuff.

Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on January 28, 2020, 05:42:18 PM
I just use Vallejo with no priming.  I keep mine simple.

1) Paint a few bricks randomly with "Khaki"
2) Dry brush heavily (more of a minimal wet brush...I just use my palette to limit the paint on the brush) with an Afrika Korps light green, not sure which (I can find out).
3) Hit a few random spots with a pastel green, or alternate colour (very light drybrush)
4) Hit the gaps between the top tiles with a black wash to make sure they stand out a little bit.

The paint is not tacky.  I did have some come off on my fingers while trying to pull one of their "modular" doors on another kit.  Other than that I've had zero issues with paint coming off, and I stash mine in piles.

After two weeks of being sick, I finally managed another playtest.  Yes, I know this thread is probably too full of playtests, but that's the nature of building a game!

Three of our party (of five) ready to run for a staircase.  Two of them made it out.  Two others were smashed by a giant...and the wizard was eaten by zombies on the staircase after falling flat on her face.

Caverns, Crypts & Catacombs had its first official public playtest yesterday at CoastalCon 2020 in Beaufort, SC.

Had a couple of great guys and we got in two games - some of the players even returning from the first game to play in the second! I suppose that bodes well for the interest!

Same dungeon, same scenario...two vastly different games.  Many laughs and much bloodshed was had.

As with all playtests I found some issues, some crappy cards, some weak monsters, some uninspiring rewards, some slight typos, etc.  But the main takeaways were:

1) The players all picked up the core mechanics within about...two turns.
2) One player said the game was "brutally fun" which is what I was going for.
3) Another player said that the game packed in "everything you get in a cool D&D dungeon adventure" which is also good news.
4) Two of the players from the first game returned for the second and we blazed through the second game, showing that the rules are very intuitive and once you learn them a group could easily do two or three games in an long evening or afternoon if desired.
5) While playing the same scenario on the same dungeon, both games turned out drastically different (albeit the end Quest Room was identical, but that's fine).  I hadn't planned on repeat players!

Overall the players had fun, got into the game easily...were already laughing and accusing each other and cracking jokes, etc.  It was a great day to game - even if I was exhausted (off my normal schedule).  Good times and very pleased for its first outing...beyond my local player group (I have about 6-8 players locally who have played it, but we're all friends - so it's great to see complete strangers pick up the game and run with it).

I was sick for most of February so I did almost nothing beyond computer-based work on my dungeon crawl.  First batch of super-easy minis I finished up today.

These are "ur ghuls" or some such from 40K, namely the Blackstone Fortress box.  I did a small batch of these (4) maybe a year ago.  Turns out they're pretty cheap on eBay so I picked up a dozen more just to fill in as ghouls for my dungeon crawl.

-Assemble...
-Spray prime...
-White on the spine and some teeth
-Bloody wash on arms
-Dip
-Base

Super simple for these fleshy gribblies.  No flat-coating either, since I want them slimy/ichory and gross.  Identical to the Plaguebearers I did for my Chaos 40K army.

Yeah, I normally like really limited palettes...but I went extra limited on these, as I wanted a vague wall of stinky flesh...wanted the unit to meld together into a simple mass.  Oddly I used way too many colours (like 12 different friggin' browns!), so it was a little more time intensive than I expected.  I'm happy with the result.  Still deciding if I'll do some pale blue eyes or not.

Cool. I too love that limited pallete look on the xombies. It really helps make them look like the peasantry and dirty too :)
I've thought about getting some of the ur-ghuls from blackstone fortress and doing some headswaps. Would that work do you think?

Depends a lot on your green-stuffing skills as they're all simple two-part models with bizarrely attached heads.  They're not like typical peg-n-hole heads.

If you think the painting is good...don't look at this next one!  Really...underwhelmed with these ratmen from Reaper.  Going to use them for a couple of pictures and then ditch them - will stick to the Skaven I've got painted up!

Been doing a bit of role-playing via Discord and it's spurred me on to try making some generic fantasy maps.  I really enjoy this kind of stuff - haven't drawn since I was in school!

May eventually try to scan some of these and post them.

I love making up fantasy maps when I DM'd my school D&D group, in my youth, I'd spend an inordinate  amount of time on my campaign maps. I still like to draw ones up for my fantasy projects it always helps me with the background story which is an important part of fantasy gaming/ modeling for me.

Yeah, I've been drawing these at random (without assigning a story to them) mainly for role-playing...basically letting our story decide what is what.  I think I may scan and include them in my dungeon crawl game if I can weave them into the campaign.

Another batch of Dwarven Forge stuff.  In my blog I explain why I rate this stuff more poorly than the original stuff I've been using.

Short version?  For the bump in price, the quality has gone down in my opinion.  Still want a few more DF sets but this set included some major disappointments.

Miniature painting has been a little slow here, though I've been assembling and priming some random miniatures.

Some Bones Black mercenaries and a Halfling theif in Bones Black material.  Again, okay for NPCs and some light work, but not my favourite.

So...I took an intentional break from the dungeon crawl for several months.  I wanted to get out from playing it constantly so I could view it freshly with the goal of Version 3 test prints.

Having fired it back up lately, I've been adding some miniatures to the horde...

Firstly a 3D printed Centaur that was a real joy to paint.
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2020/6/30/1067354-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1067354-.html)

Secondly, a new Monk from Reaper.  A nice Tre Manor sculpt.  I've added the Monk and Halfling as character classes for the game.

Thirdly some cultists...I'll be adding another six.  They're a new Magic minions - they can sacrifice themselves to boost fellow Monsters, etc.

A Halfling getting splatted by a Stone Golem...

The party interrupts a torrid love affair between a Stone Golem and a Minotaur...love knows no bounds!

So, I've been doing work behind the scenes for the dungeon crawl.  I received a new playtest set of cards...immediately revamped another 30 or so of them, edited some heroes, etc.  Started work on the actual glossary of terms and have taken baby steps into the storyline book.

Since I don't have any painting updates, I figured I'd throw in some random pics from test games over the past few months.  I figure everyone like pictures.  I do have some fantasy minis showing up next week which'll find there way on here.

A test dungeon...

Heroes fleeing the dungeon and leaving the warrior and an ally to a grisly death...

When I travel to friends' houses I often still take the simple D&D tiles for ease of use.

Needless to say, this ended...poorly...

The story to this last pic is...pretty fantastic.  After a proper ass kicking, our heroes decided to flee a dungeon.  We'd awoken a giant who kicked my Thief across a room, killing him - and the rest had fled down a hallway, kicking open a door to a room with an exit (this staircase shown).  We spawned two groups of baddies; ghouls and skeletons.  However they started at a decent distance so our group expended all of their action dice to flee up the staircase.

The final hero, a sorceress played by my friend Ashley had three action dice...but was reduced to two because of wounds.  All she had to do was roll a 2+ on either dice and she'd have enough to move off the table.  She rolled snake-eyes...and was immediately consumed.  She even made the mistake of saying "Eh, all I have to do is not roll double ones...."

Poor girl.  Poor sorceress.

Hoping to maybe playtest again this weekend and I'll try to actually take some solid pics this go round.

Sounds like a successful test
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on October 15, 2020, 06:03:29 PM
Oh, thus far I'd say...50% of games have been TPKs.  This is a bit biased as I've been playing large-ish dungeons, instead of smaller starter dungeons, so it's been a little lopsided.

The game is intentionally very difficult.

Hah!  You assume too fairly on my part.  I simply don't bother painting eyes because A) you never see them except in random close-up photography!) and B) I can't do them well...and weirdly nothing is worse than badly painted eyes!

They do look closed on that figure though and it makes sense given the pose. :D

How many players are in your group of adventurers?  Also, is it gamer that’s in charge of the "monsters" in the dungeon or are they generated automatically?
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on November 04, 2020, 12:14:17 AM
My playtest group consists of five or six local players.  The game is based around a typical four-hero party (and their subsequent allies along the way).  It is cooperative against the dungeon itself, however...the game contents will actually be suitable for GM play as well.

We tend to play the game with either two, three or four players.  It is technically solo-suitable but I find it becomes heavy on the player to be handling all of the decks/elements/etc.  Two is perfectly fine, and four is always fun.  When we have three players, the most experienced person runs the fourth hero and then if someone dies we transfer control, etc.

The dungeon/creatures are "automated" so to speak.

Thanks for the reply.

IIRC, you mention earlier in this thread that the rules you use are homebrew… or at least part of it. If so, do you plan to publish them at some point?

On a slightly different note, I cannot find gamers where I live and I’m always on the lookout for good, simple solo rules. Do you know of any?

Cheers! 8)

They will be published at some point, and I had planned to have it done by this Christmas, but..that didn't happen.  It'll be within the next year, but that's just because I'm a one-man hobbyist! :D

As far as solo dungeon crawls, I'm not entirely sure.  Hero Quest is being re-released.  Warhammer Quest is great if you can find it, though it's mechanics are a little old school you just get a lot of game for your money there.  Rangers of Shadow Deep is a co-op or solo game, but I don't think it's entirely a dungeon crawl.  I never got to try Otherworld's game, so I'm not sure on that.

Beyond that I haven't run into many that I found scratched the itch.  There is a thread above at the top for fantasy skirmish games, you might be able to toss in a question or two there?

I forgot, I finished up this Wyvern, but I had trouble getting a decent pic of it!

Is that the Nolzur's one?

I've been considering grabbing one...missed out on the Wyvern that I'd found a long while ago that I'd really wanted though. There used to be a feathered wyvern design that was pretty cool, but the company that made it first discontinued it and then vanished since then.

Great looking wyvern I’ve been contemplating using some of the Nolzur figures.

Yep, the Nolzur's model.  Nice, though it has the usual weird plastic which is hard to sand/trim.

I haven't had any issues with the material myself, I've had a few other issues with them, one I had an issue with due to WizKids being a pain in the rear to get replacement parts for (The hair and back of the head of the Marillith I'd gotten was missing), and the other was with the Beholder...the lens for the main eye distorted things (didn't use the spell effect eyes because I wasn't about to mess with them and the spell effects would have made it harder to paint.).

One of the most fun of the minis is their Shark one, because that was pretty cool to see, the pose is awesome, and the water part is cool. Their siege engines are also really nice for the price, and the raptors set was also fun to paint up.

But for a lot of their minis I end up doing very little cleanup at all, just base it with sand on a base and keep going through them. But I've tended to be painting them up for my needs with D&D games...so I haven't painted many for a few months (1 catapult and the raptors...I want to grab the Orc Adventurer set to add to my other D&D orcs along with the ballistas).

If anything, I'd say the heroes are almost always up against it.  Being a co-op game, difficulty was a huge consideration.  I've found way too many fun co-op board games that become way too easy on the players.  This game has a lot of random chance in it, but overall the players have to play smart or you're dead.  During the hero phase in an engagement it's not uncommon for us to sit for several minutes planning the order to try to get out of a dire situation, etc.

In fact, part of studying the campaign play now is to make sure the heroes don't outpace the dungeons and become too powerful, etc.  Retreating or fleeing the dungeon is always and option, and in some cases you can pay off baddies to avoid fighting them, etc.

The bridge is the piece I was most coveting (and arguably the most over-priced...and thus cringe-inducing purchase).  The big double door sets are great and I may even pick up another in the future.  The other pieces are just floor pieces, which weirdly...I needed.

Cracking job mate, both on the figures and the Dwarven Forge Terrain. I have read the DF terrain can be difficult to paint.

Are those troglodytes the older white Bones or the newer Bones Black? They look great!
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on January 01, 2021, 05:22:30 PM
They're Reaper Bones Troglodytes (which is a misnomer since that really just means cave dweller - but I think they're following D&D style).  They're the newer 'Black' line, and detail is okay.  More than enough for minions/baddies.

Regarding painting the DF stuff - I've had zero issue.  I use a very simple method and it's all Vallejo straight onto the dark grey/black dwarvenite.  I do not prime, which is something you may have an issue with? Some of these plastics don't like the accelerants/alcohol in spray paints, etc.  Also DF states that they "only" recommend...gasp...their lines of paint.

Vallejo has worked perfectly fine, applied directly over the material.

Fantastic work!

Did you had to cut the Troglodytes from an integral base?

I thought they might be Bones Black. I really prefer that material.

Thanks for the info on the DF, that helps settle my mind on it.

I can give an in depth review on Dwarven Forge some time if people are interested (I have a lot from a variety of "eras").

Calimero: Yep, I always cut away puddle bases if they're big/intrusive.  Luckily with Bones Black it's pretty easy to do.  The cuts aren't super precise/clean, but then I just clutter basing debris around the feet to hide it a bit.

An Dwarven Forge review would be most appreciated, especially something covering how the DF outdoor terrain mixes with other types of outdoor terrain.

At the very last moment, I've decided to drive down the road and host some play-test games at Siege of Augusta in...Augusta, Georgia.  If anyone is there, swing by and say hello, or take the game for a spin.

Masks required, and sanitizer at tables suggested - but attendance looks low anyway.  CC&C is a four-player cooperative game, and I'm hoping to be siphoned off into a side room.  Goal is to host 2-3 games on Friday afternoon/evening, and 2-3 games on Saturday afternoon/evening.

Well, I decided at the last minute to attend Siege of Augusta.

I ended up running seven games (three on Friday and four on Saturday) of Caverns, Crypts & Catacombs for the baying masses.  As far as I could tell everyone enjoyed it at least a bit, most of them coming back for second or third games and asking if I was staying for Sunday, etc.  Seemed like everyone had a good time and we had some of the craziest finishes I've seen in the game.  Out of seven games, we lost two full parties, and a handful of other heroes where parties managed to escape.

One party, in particulary...escaped with three of four heroes on one wound each with the fourth hero dying ONE space from the exit door.  All is well. :D

A gentleman, who I believe works for Miniature Building Authority(?), donated me a cool little resin cellar after he partook in a couple of games.  Many thanks to him!

Another small local gaming convention.  Only three games this time (numbers/space were pretty minimal due to the coofridge).

Thanks.  Sadly I only managed three games (small con), but they were all fraught with silliness.

Game 1: The Hero Party did well, but when confronted by a final Chamber with poison gas...camaraderie fell apart.  The Thief, using his special ability, took all the Luck dice from the party to run clear across the chamber in a single turn, sacrificed a finger to open the Demon Door on the far side and then escaped.  The Barbarian and Halfling were a way ahead of the Wizard and legged it together - escaping.  The Wizard, alone...then drew an Orc encounter where he was slain on a bridge - cut off from escape.  He did well, taking three of the six Orcs with him though...

Game 2: A new party of four was doing well until they were jumped by Cave Spiders and Ghouls at the same time.  They were losing wounds left and right...the Warrior went down to one wound.  They managed to kill off the baddies and, exhausted, stepped into the Chamber to claim their rewards.  The very first reward was an event where they were ambushed...by Orcs (again!).  The Warrior and Dwarf were slain instantly.  The Wizard fled, again engaging Orcs by himself (note: these are totally different groups of players!).  The Thief...used his sped to leg it back to the entrance and left. :D  The Wizard perished in the first Chamber before he could escape - pinned in by Orcs on both sides of a passage.

Game 3: Another new party steps into the dungeon...confronted in the first room by Cave Spiders and a Sorcerer (we decided immediately that the Sorcerer was actually the Wizard from the preceding game who had been abandoned and gone mad - somehow he'd actually escaped death by Orc).  They dealt with the Cave Spiders easily and then the Sorcerer took almost half wounds off of every Hero, running around the chamber and setting everyone on fire.  They finally slew the Sorcerer and stumbled into the next chamber where they encountered the Stone Golem.  Big - nigh unkillable, but slow.  As seen in the photo posted (more on my blog), the Halfling and Dwarf ran circles around the Stone Golem and made it to the bridge.  The Barbarian and Elf were left behind...but the Barbarian was attacked - leaving a gap for the Elf to burn all of his Luck and run past the Stone Golem.  The Barbarian was smashed to pieces by the Stone Golem and the group eventually escaped by hacking their way through some Zombies.  3/4 of this group survived - but they only claimed a single reward because they chose to leg it instead of clear the Chambers and claim loot.

So I've let this thread dwindle, but mainly because I'm in full play-test mode.  Fewer miniatures are being painted, but all the work is going into design and behind the scenes crap (ordering more and more revised test cards, writing some PDFs, etc.).

I did, however, just paint some more Oathmark goblins (poor photo):

And some random pictures from more playtests over the past few months.

A party runs into zombies in the first chamber...

And....weirdly this band also ran into zombies in the first chamber.  With the added difficulty of running into them in a small single-space passage (they generate each turn so you have to kill X number per turn to avoid them piling up like this!)

The unrealistic plan is to possibly have a game on sale by the end of the year.

A few pictures from some games this week.

A Hero Party kicks in a door, coming face to face with a pack of Ghouls
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iHEW7amGAT0/YQh-YgNep5I/AAAAAAAAHLk/-mLVAzNJHao_fsVsNbFjzTJSTpQ_c1xpgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Dungeon%2BCrawls%2B%252810%2529.jpg)

A Hero party enters the Quest Room to find it filled with bandits and skeletons...

The Hero Party ends up falling back to fight on a bridge, allowing them to minimize the advantage of numbers.

In another game, a Hero Party sneaks past a Stone Golem, but only then realizes it will follow them, cutting off their escape route...so they turn to face it.  The Warrior providing defensive bonuses to the Dwarf who stands his ground (losing half his wounds), while the Halfling and Sorceress hurl stones and lightning bolts from the safety of a narrow bridge that the Stone Golem cannot cross.

Thanks.  The game balances nicely between Monsters (singular creatures with several wounds), and Minions (groups of creatures with single wounds).  The worst combination - big surprise, is when you get a bit of both.

It tends to cater to both the occasional desire to hack through a room of 15-20 baddies...or to face actual dangerous singular creatures, etc.  When combined, of course, it can become awfully deadly (by design).  Minions can often pin down or hinder the Hero Party while the Monster deals out its damage, etc.

One of the very first game decisions made was "Are three goblins a threat....or are ten goblins a threat?".  That dictated the feel going forward.

I'm reminded of some of the D&D games I played in back in seventh grade (roughly the dawn of time - D&D had just gotten an "A" in front of it) where it was perfectly normal to run into 30 orcs standing in a 20x20 room waiting for visitors.  :)

I love it when OSR fans bitch about how modern D&D isn't "realistic" any more.  Must be terrible when you get so old you can't see through your rose-colored glasses any more.

Oh yeah, this is proper "hack n' slash" level territory.  However, players are encouraged to justify stuff with whatever role-playing ideas they have.  It's up to the players to build the story as they go...or don't and just throw dice and kill things.

Finally snapped pictures of two new warriors and a sweet arab merchant with his camel.  The two warriors were built from the superb Frostgrave Knights kit (arguably the best generic fantasy sprues I've ever used).  The merchant/diplomat is a 3D print shipped to me by a buddy...the camel is from the older Conan kickstarter game.

I don't even think he rides the camel...if we're honest. :D

Yeah the Knights kit is super crisp (on par with stuff like GW).  But, as with many Frostgrave kits, its beauty is that you get like 20 different heads, every conceivable weapon (clubs, maces, knives, swords, axes, double-handed axes, double-handed clubs, small crossbow, big crossbow, normal bow...a dead chicken, bags, pouches, canteens, shields, etc.).  It's just a superb kit for anyone doing dungeon crwals, D&D, Mordheim, etc.  It's everything you need on a sprue.

Two more additions.

A 3D printed Arab thief/smuggler/salesman...which sadly was a bit "iffy" with the dip and flat-coat combo.  I'm a little unhappy with the result, but not enough to strip and redo it.

And a Hasslefree female dwarf.  Gorgeous sculpt, though I was a little sad to find my Hasslefree order being all quite small compared to everything else I own.  I'm going to make use of some of them, but sadly won't be buying more in the future.  This one is on a 25mm base and you can see how tiny she is.  She'll be pulling double duty as a halfling.

Disclaimer: I'm chuffed to bits.

I don't love painting.  I find it...bearable to paint to the level that I paint to (a nice...Table Top+ level).  I'm always daunted by miniatures, particularly detailed ones and big ones.  90% of the stuff I paint I find..."okay".  However, every now and then one of my miniatures just makes me smile.

This is a Tre Manor sculpt from Hasslefree, and I simply love the result.  I love the miniature and I love the colour scheme and I'm just...genuinely happy.  That's rare for me, but it always cheers me up. :D  He was even picked up specifically to be painted up as a bad guy encounter in the dungeon crawl.  Love this figure.

I know it's foolish, but there are times I don't paint for maybe 3-4 weeks...and I genuinely think to myself "I don't even know how to paint anymore...".  It's illogical and stupid, but that thought inhabits my mind which then makes me want to not sit down and paint...stupid brain.

I've got similar feelings about painting... In may case, maybe the repetitive process of painting armies is the reason for it. But sometimes, a gem comes, and I feel happy again!
Tre Manor and Kev White are my favorite sculptors, I love that one too! Their work is grim (without being stuffed full with unneccessary skulls and other details...) and realistic. But I still dont risek to order anything from Hasslefree, because of their reputation...
And Your paintjob is really awesome! The desaturated look fits really well, and makes the golden details pop. Its great!

My order took a while, but turns out I ordered a "pre order" miniature.  I think their prices are pretty high...but this was the guy I had to have and I ordered 4-5 minis just to justify the shipping.  I don't do much in the way of armies anymore - beyond 15mm stuff.  Doing dungeon crawls is nice because I designed the game, so I set all the minions to maximum 12 minis per card :D I can paint 12 of anything and not hate my life generally.

A new party demo at the local store - and the Hero Party dies in a room surrounded by zombies and on fire...You'll note that the Warrior on the right even made it so far as to opening the door to abandon the quest - but burned to death before he could escape.  Good times.

Excellent photos, looks like the kind of game I'd love to play.

Great consistancy in your painting, you produce a lot of good solid paint jobs. Keep them coming.

I can empathise with your motivational problems when it comes to painting, sometimes it's a slog, especially when painting stuff that I don't actually like, but want to get on the table.

Been on a bit of a painting hiatus at the moment - working on rules, revisions...and another game.  Yes I took a break from designing my dungeon crawl, and chose to relax by...designing another fantasy skirmish game.  It's more or less a rapid fire replacement for Mordheim.

Managed to get in some games recently.  Good excuse to bust out some of my old Mordheim terrain:

Also managed to get in some games working on a generic fantasy battle system with a buddy who wants to run some conventions:

Well I've come full circle...I'm now stripping down and repainting some of the miniatures I started with on this dungeon crawl project.  My rule of thumb is essentially...if I overlook a miniature for several years because I'm "meh" on the paintjob and it never sees the table...it's being repainted or sold off.

I redid these guys recently, including one Reaper Bones Black monk figure which I only painted a few months ago but hated it so much I just tossed it in a bin and it never made it on the blog.

He's a 'Mule Handler' from the Otherworld Miniatures 'Henchmen & Hirelings' pack.  I think they sell him separately, and in a couple different versions.

I decided to build a beastman/chaos themed warband for use with the new skirmish game.  I snagged the beastmen from the Beastgrave box and a spare metal one from eBay.  I have some ungors (satyrs) on the way as well.  Maybe add a few chaos warriors and call it a day.  These will also potentially find use in the future for dungeon crawling as well, hence the basing.

Shocking to no one...I love desaturated colours.  I have a whole host of model paints sitting on my desk unused because they're too vibrant or colourful.  I do occasionally break them out for stark contrast, or the Arab/Indian themed miniatures.  Many of my friends bemoan my choice of colours...or lack thereof.

Always a treat reading through this thread. I absolutely love the last two battle reports, they looked like cracking games.

I'm sure you've answered this before, but where are the dungeon tiles from? They're sublime.

The dungeons are a mix of old Dwarven Forge pre-painted resin...and then a bunch of their new plastic stuff that I painted to match.  The older resin stuff is much nicer sculpt-wise, but the new plastic stuff is more useful and easy to transport/toss around!

Yeah, two of the four models from the Warhammer Underworlds box for...Khagra's Ravagers(?).  I've deblinged them as much as I can without major surgery.  I don't typically like GW's "turned to 11" style, but I can appreciate the nods for classic Chaos.  I've snipped some horns from shields, snipped some dangly bits, removed some spikes from weapon pommels, etc.

I really like the end result.

I like the realistic gritty paint jobs on your stuff and don’t like high fantasy. Also look good on flat bases.

You and me both.  I was hesitant to even buy them, but I wanted just a couple Chaos Warriors and this box had only three. :D  I'd still prefer them about 15% "less" of everything.  Even the ones here I've chopped/trimmed off excess dangly bits, spikes, etc.  Thematically they fit together in my head as a warband; my warband is more or less a few Chaos warriors who have recruited a Beastman tribe to fight for/with them (more in line with old school Chaos from the 90's).

I have a few human cultists, a human mage, three Chaos warriors, a minotaur, a few beastmen and a bunch of ungors.  So I can make/alter my warband as my games progress.

Got in several games of Merciless on Christmas day, though I only snapped a few pics.  My buddy has assembled a Frostgrave Barbarian/Viking themed warband and I ran my Chaos Warriors + Beastmen group.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhgKviHKoYqEAjWCm9ZzDBTDX2ycLVfWV_-wSNyLYrHW_Tw3VcgK6N7gECfWJYRtALCN1d1P61mIidM7IkXIKQRQ2sxsmfpYH2Ff2ElxyG5tBxb0FftEmoLVt1xLlXcpevaCBdCqh2Q8h-n3ntKBCXtbj81qk8CjKEAMg-2riX7DzmbobdxbYnxkGcOFw=s4096)

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgPoRmauBDiAMjE_Km8frL9kNbTa0dJ8ymtvbN-bm7Md4JpdDbKaQqUBhMtvOn4j5AEkX2kq8KfSWI1toGg3mwzcR3Q5GTmgbSPuJtaJgMMX9dgIyrCujdht-fDqNAC7P6Cld8qBvkW4PaYhuM45bs53qsL-pEG1Cn2Tzf4FoMu0Y9zLlDyWaAZB9Anww=s4096)

I also started the first three figures of an "opfor" or loaner warband for Merciless - using a box of Frostgrave Knights and Fireforge soldiers I received in a Secret Santa exchange.  I'm going to be looking for decals to do the shields in the future - but haven't found a suitable source.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFKpuOoLCcjVSd7jfBsUNR10QQvQr7xtTUejcrUvOtBjKHl_7ALnMK-PKbIWT066daFofKka6XeRRWWT71pqPq5HvSqHdCK09LdLDeZncom0j5YBl8avAv4viS2H4oSJAgYQQug0NHlz6CWcHgFBUB5D9HioCnnyYGW3ECEXxrGHT7OxSYq1Bnoa0nig=s2000)

Because these guys will inevitably serve double duty in the dungeon crawl, I've continued the same basing theme.

I'm interested to see where Merciless goes, development-wise. Since everything is round based, is it safe to assume you ditched the flank/rear arc rules?
Title: Re: Elbows' new Fantasy Thread
Post by: Elbows on December 28, 2021, 03:53:57 PM
Yeah Merciless is a different project, a skirmish game akin to stuff like Mordheim.  I took a break from the dungeon crawl rules after becoming burned out ....so I decided to relax by making, another rule set.  That then also spawned a post-apocalyptic version since my buddy wanted to play "Necromunda" without Necromunda rules, etc.

Sorry, I was referring to a specific rule in the original Mordheim- they actually had rules for flank and rear attacks. They wanted to have a justification for square bases when most games of that scale used (and still use) round bases. While I see the appeal for more "realism" (with finger quotes), for the most part I think it's a relic best left in the past.

Ah, gotcha.  Yeah, mechanically this has nothing to do with Mordheim - other than it's a fantasy skirmish where you buy/build your warband and they develop over time and gain skills, etc.  Filling that itch without any connection mechanic-wise to the game.  Mordheim is one of the many games that...I love in theory, but disappoints when I play it.  In typical GW fashion, the minis, the idea, and the lore/IP were great.  The game rules broke down pretty quick (particularly when you have a friend who enjoys lightly abusing the rules and making it incredibly unfun). :D

If you're looking for another play testers, I've been looking for a dungeon crawl game. Been thinking about adapting Sellswords to a dungeon crawl, but that would be a tonne of work. Yours looks really interesting.

Hey Burg, I'm squared away on playtesters - just in the final portion of having to write down the rulebook.  Also, it's a game reliant on hundreds of cards of various sizes/shapes, etc. so it's not just a PDF game, etc.  Had to keep the playtesting to the local area and some friends in another city, etc.

The plan was to have it done this Christmas, but got burned out.  So...maybe by the end of 2022 it'll actually be a thing. :D

Yeah they have a strong...not necessarily Greek, but ancient-civilized vibe to them.  If I use them in Merciless with my others, I'll probably pretend they're a separate tribe (with obvious animosity).  Didn't stop me from pointing out the leader with blood on his horns - a pre-battle ritual or some such (ala head canon).

I really like these. It’s nice to see beastmen types that are not necessarily “feral bloodthirsty savages”

agreed.

can't see what didn't turn out great either - superb miniatures / prints (seem better quality than the ones I've bought off ebay / etsy so far - but it could just be your paint-job).

While I've been cranking out science fiction minis lately, I've been scheming behind the scenes with more fantasy stuff on the way.  This is range I picked up off Etsy.  He'll be joining the human force against my Chaos Beastman warband.

Played some games of Merciless, but my buddy ran them as dungeon crawls - DM'ing some scenarios, in place of normal skirmish games.

Hope you're ready for some serious exictement!  Birds!

I needed something to cover vultures, carrion, hawks/birds of prey, and proto-hawks for both Merciless and Scrapheap.  These raptors from Malifaux will serve until I get ore dedicated and interesting models.  Only compllaint is that they're typical Malifaux - read: super duper slender/delicate/fragile.  Borderline not suitable for gaming, so I don't think these'll last many games.

Their legs in particular are sub 0.2mm or so...and will snap at the slightest snag, etc.  So, this may be a wasted $20 in a few weeks time.

Soooo...it's been a bit (just under a year).  Figure I'll play catch up.

Explanation first.  Simply put, what started as a simple dungeon crawl project became a massive game (Caverns, Crypts, & Catacombs) endeavor...which then burned me out after I worked on it for something like 2.5 years straight.  I got real burned out and shifted gears to a "quick and easy" game to just get back into the flow.  That game (Merciless) then became two games...gaining a sister game (Scrapheap) set in the sci-fi/post apoc genre.

Then Famine, Sword, & Fire happened on a whim...by accident. Next thing ya know, I'm designing and playing four games...none of which have been properly completed or put on sale. Good thing this is a hobby and not a business.

Anyway, over the past year I've been doing 'some' fantasy stuff, though I went hard into Scrapheap when I decided to finish that game first (which will be followed by Merciless).  I've been playing some CCC, and even ran it at Siege of Augusta, etc.  Was planning on running it at CoastalCon (but they closed down).

So, just some updates:
Been playing a lot of Famine, Sword, & Fire (which is an Imagi-Nations/Fantasy rank-n-flank).  I have a separate thread on it here on LA.

Amassed a solid army for the game, a fictitious/fantasy army basically.

Thanks all.  While not the most exciting stuff to paint, I've decided my ancients/fantasy/medieval table should have the same level of scatter and silliness that my Old West towns do.  I normally just steal my Old West scatter terrain for stuff like that -- but figured I'd give them some more appropriate stuff.

I haven't gone to "Old West" levels on most of my other projects but since this stuff will be so versatile (including use in other settings I don't even play...yet) I think it's all been worthwhile.  May grab a few more sets of scatter to really get it all going.  I'd also like to build a small wagon/cart caravan which I think would prove very useful for scenarios.

Thanks, lol

These trees started a long time ago in a simple desert sand scheme:

Then I started using non-beige mats and eventually re-based them:

So...I assume in another couple years I'll re-paint or re-base them again.  Can never have enough trees.  I use them in all of my games.

I will let you know when I find out.  lol

I took a break for the last 24 hours from painting terrain (I have family coming into town).  I only have a little bit more "scatter" to do, and then finish two large structures...it's all coming together.

Also a quick review: Wizkids 4D 'D&D' Sets.

I was scouring the internet for quick and easy scatter for my ancient/fantasy stuff and I stumbled upon these kits.  I'd seen them before but completely dismissed them as their MSRP is often pretty silly (in the $50 USD range).  They're aimed at role-players and not necessarily tabletop gamers.  Most of the components are available in white primer through their "Nolzurs" range and similar.

I dismissed them until I found that on the Wizkids store on Amazon these are frequently dropped to $25-30 a box.  Far more palatable than the $40-50 they normally go for.

Overall, pretty pleased. I ditch about 20% of the stuff in the boxes, and then just repaint/rebased/fiddle with the remaining stuff.  I de-base the fences and epoxy them onto better bases, etc. (those are coming soon).  I don't think they're particularly good "out of the box", but with simple re-paints etc. they do turn out some good scatter.  Some of the kits are better than others and some look relatively useless.  But $25 to get some nice hay bales, some oxen, cattle, hay feeders, a little manger, some fences, etc...not too shabby.

In short: recommend if you get them on sale, do not recommend if they're MSRP.

That’s a pretty deluxe set of scatter elements! Those are exactly the kind of details that may or may not have a direct impact on the game (as objectives, for ex), but really add to the flavor of a game. I’m slightly envious of your gaming associates…

Yeah, these will see service for both skirmish - where they'll be more integral, and rank-n-flank where they'll mostly serve as background settings.  I do want to build a small set of ox drawn carts for a convoy of some sort.

In skirmish games the boats could be used for approach or escape, the bell could be used to trigger an alarm, the wells could serve as objectives to poison, etc.  The set of six chests are "Treasure Tokens" for Merciless, a key objective, etc.  Most of my games, including Merciless, have sentry rules so having the alarm bell is a nice bonus.

And at various stages I add in some Vallejo armour washes (which are really filters and do not act as washes at all).  Green for some damp/moist/stuff and some light browns and greys to add a little variety to the wood.  It's dead easy and I've been happy with it thus far.  I also started adding dark brown vallejo armour wash around some of the nails (particularly on the jetty/boat) to show some rust from the hardware.

Screwing around with my "almost" complete village.  I have some more scatter and two more large MDF buildings to put together.  I'll probably ditch the neoprene road for this set-up, but it should be useful for skirmishes and I can clear it up for games of FSF.

Thanks, I stumbled upon it by accident.

Vallejo Field Grey spray (easy)

Thanks for sharing your technique. I will have to give it a try.

Your village, like all of your work, looks brilliant.

Not the best pics, but I added some Oathmark Orcs to replace my metal ones for the dungeon crawl - and a 'big bad'.
