I picked up some V&V minis last year and finally made a start on the painting. These two are half a unit of berserkers. The other two are under way and hopefully will be joining soon.
A few notes and more pictures on my blog - https://paintsngluenrocknroll.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/berserker-brace.html (https://paintsngluenrocknroll.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/berserker-brace.html)

Those are really nice very muted colours which suit the subject really well.

Gorgeous. Love the tats.

Wow, that pale skin with tattoos!!! :o :o :o Unbelievable!

Thanks for the comments, nice feedback.
Here's a link to the mini company. If you do order, be aware that they take about a month to ship them to the UK. Worth the wait.

The painting is superb . My attention was caught by the haft of the axe carried by the wolf skin clad figure . I think it’s the first time I,ve seen wood painted in a believable manner .

really nicely painted minis. They look fierce!
-
Damn they look good! :)

Thanks all, very nice of you to comment. I get a lot of ideas from pictures of re-enactors rather than other minis.

Indeed, wood is not generally brown, unless varnished. Though obviously, I must try a bit harder with my BEAR skin. :D

That pale Scandinavian skin tone is just superb. Makes me cold just looking at it!

Yep the skin tones and the toned down tats are lovely :-*

Indeed, fine brushwork, though I thought the tattooed gent was an 'undead' at first glimpse and then I thought, maybe a Woad with the tattooing. However, curious of why the tattooing for a Viking - I know there is some possible evidence of Viking tattooing but curious of your inspiration to 'go for it'. The evidence is ambivalent. Though, saying that, it certainly wouldn't be surprising given how many ancient cultures practiced the 'art.'
Does the current popularity of skin art mean we are regressing rapidly towards being ancient? :?

Good question. I would like to be able to back up my decision to paint tattoos with some obscure academic reference, but truth is I thought this guy looks a bit plain with his top off, he needs tatts!
I generally go for whatever I think looks good rather than what history dictates. And there's a good chance that my choices are as accurate as any historian's interpretation of the scant/non-existent "data" on the vikings. With the clothing I reckon the re-enactors give us as good a window into the real world as anything else, some of them go to huge lengths to use ancient dyes and methods, though again this is as much guess work as anything. I am currently painting shields and there is a real dearth of information. One Norwegian(?) shield had traces of blue paint, and in one (saga?) reference shields were painted black and yellow, while in another red was used to signify aggression. I have only read second hand accounts of these "facts" so could be re-circulating urban myth for all I know. I just go with what looks good to me but that is not anachronistic, in my mind at any rate. As I say, it's all pretty much guess work when it comes to vikings.

Well, that's good enough reasoning for me. Just wondered if you'd delved deeply into the history - and it certainly appears you have, even if via secondary sources. Very few of us go beyond that. And, as you say, history is as much perspective as it ever is fact.
