Title: STAR BREACH: The Multiverse Sci-Fi Skirmisher (CoOp/Solo Expansion! Pg15)
Post by: Burma44 on April 12, 2018, 01:42:10 PM
Edited from Original Post.

Welcome to S T A R  B R E A C H.

Star Breach is a tabletop skirmish miniatures game, with a sci-fi multiverse theme. Players can use any sci-if models to play, building customized warbands of 4-12 soldiers to do battle within any sci-fi setting of their imagining. There are 20 different factions for players to choose from in Star Breach, covering nearly every sci-fi motif imaginable. Thus, players get to hobby and play with the miniatures they want to collect and customize, and not just the ones they have to buy.

Games of Star Breach are fought between 2-6 players, with tons of pre-built scenarios to choose from! Most games are kill-points based, with valuable bonus points earned for completing scenario objectives. Games are typically 6 turns in length, with two phases per turn: the Order Dice Phase and Special Actions Phase. Soldiers are activated by drawing and assigning order dice, an innovative system that keeps play order interesting and strategic, as well as balanced and realistic to the fury of combat. During the Order Dice Phase, soldiers each execute one of six orders, such as firing their weapon, running to a new position, or taking cover. After every soldier has an opportunity to take an order, the turn moves into a Special Actions Phase, where warband alphas and specialists alternate taking one final special action. Once these special actions are taken, players recollect the order dice and start a new turn.

Star Breach is best defined by its sleek and intuitive play mechanics, which are easy to learn and retain, but lend themselves to a whole new world of strategic play. Star Breach also involves lots of awesome customization and play variety, including hundreds of weapons, relics, skills and physic abilities that together make building your warband a fun and rewarding experience all of its own. Star Breach features both a tournament and campaign mode of play built right into the rulebook (both in the free PDF, and the hardcover). And if that's not enough, coming 2020 there will be an additional FREE expansion released titled Hunters, which will cover rules for Co-Op and Solo adventures in the world of Star Breach!

Thank you! And yeah... no. Haha. My life can only handle so much "create-an-entire-gaming-system-with-20-different-and-balanced-factions-and-then-release-it-and-support-it-for-free." Hahaha. There's already some decent-ish options for fantasy multiverse gaming, like Frostgrave or SoBH, so that's good!

Thanks for the love, Doug! Sorry to make your life decisions a bit harder! Haha. But I do hope you give Starfall a good read through and see it as worth at least a couple hours of your life to get it on the table! If you do, definitely let me know how you enjoyed it! :)

@Ockman: Thank you, sir! You and I are on the same page as calling it "work", but my wife is still convinced it's a hobby.  lol lol A labor of love! I didn't want to release something that wasn't truly "finished", so I've been hiding and working on Starfall for a good 5 months. Very excited to finally release it!

@Daeothar: Thank you to you as well! I do hope you find the rules and supplements living up to or exceeding the hype. It's an honor you'll be giving them a read/try! Let me know what you think when you do!  :-*

The more i'm reading these rules the more i'm loving the look of this game. I'm a big fan of the order dice system, it just makes games that little bit more random when it comes to planning so it feels like anything can happen.

Also thanks for the youtube clips its good to see the game in action and be shown how to play and not relying on my interpretation of things.... which can be way off sometimes  :D.

Looking foward to giving them a go!! :)

From the quick read through I've done this is looking very good.  I've been wanting a game system to play Dune with along with various other things like AvPvT (Alien vs Predator vs Terminator) and randomly facing off various sci-fi warbands against each other and it looks like this might just do the job.

So glad to hear it, Darathar! I knew you'd love it, and I would be honored to see your models in action for Starfall! Also very happy to hear you find the youtube clips helpful. Up to three vids, but hoping to add more as I can.

In my opinion, the order dice system or similar has become an essential mechanic to a genuinely competitive tabletop game. The system is absolutely ingenious and I am indebted to Warlord Games for creating and utilizing it. I do feel like the Special Actions phase for skilled soldiers as an addition is the perfect icing on the cake. Anyway, when you give Starfall a go, please PLEASE share your warband creations and battle rep! Would love to see them!

Glad to hear it, Giger! Starfall is EXACTLY what you're looking for if you want to mix and match models or play different universes against one another. The 20 different, "generic" factions should definitely be enough for you to find a warband for each and every one of your ideas. Alien=The Hive (or Hunters). Predators= Hunters. Terminators= Ancient Machine. Dune= would fit a number of warbands depending on your build. Have lots of fun! And please keep us posted with pics on what you come up with!

*Vigorously shakes can of primer whiled dipping paintbrush* haha.

I hear you with Rogue Stars. I wanted that game to be good so badly, and it was just...really bad. Someone deemed it "Homework: The Game". Lol. It's failings were actually a bit of the reason I finally hunkered down and wrote Starfall, so I guess it was good for me for something! Hopefully you will fall in love with Starfall! Lots of fun with building your rosters, but then the game play is fairly sleek and engaging throughout. The rules say 28mm, but 15mm would be just fine (even a bit more realistic with ranges) as long as your gaming crew is all down to play matches in 15mm.

Suitably intrigued, I've given Starfall a quick read and it looks like it could be a fun game - I particularly like the universality of it.  However, as a personal preference, the big stumbling block I'm having is I'm just not that keen on the idea of the single stat of Initiative covering for melee, shooting & psychics so the everyone is equally good at all three.  If you don't mind me asking, what was your reasoning for not breaking out shooty, punchy & crazy magicky stuff into separate stats?

Hey Genghis! First of all, I am very honored that you took time to check out Starfall and read through the game. It makes me happy to hear you're liking what you see. Thank you!

That's a great question, and I am happy to share with you a few reasons why I made Initiative a catch-all stat instead of breaking it into BS, WS and PS. First, and probably foremost, my reasoning was for ease and efficiency of play. With each player commanding an average of 7 units per side, that's 14 different soldiers to keep track of, often with unique load-outs and rules. I quickly realized in developing the game that the stat-line of soldiers were going to have to be more in the X-Wing Miniatures range and not so much in the Warhammer range in order to keep the game moving at a decent and engaging rate of play. I didn't want players staring at stat sheets every new order, but rather I wanted the stat-lines to become easy to remember and intuitive to use.

Second, from a game designer's perspective, keeping one stat in-check for nearly 200 unique units is much easier than keeping 3 different stats balanced. This is especially true as I am still a one-man operation doing this as a hobby! haha. It makes my job easier, but really it also protects the game from big imbalances and unnecessary errors. As you dive more into the ruleset and supplements (and I hope you do! Even give the game a play or two!) you will find that BS, WS, and PS are still present in spirit, but all three are significantly dictated by weapon and relic options, soldier's potential load out, and battlefield circumstances. These are variables that are much harder for "meta/min-max players" to account for, making the game much more safe from being "broken".

Third, and finally for now, I found that using only 1 stat vs. 3 stats does actually not stifle variety or customization. As hinted above, ranged attacks, close combat and psychic abilities are all worked out with slightly different mechanics. The mechanics are related enough to make game play easy, but different enough that soldier load outs and battlefield circumstances significantly impact a soldier's options and abilities. While the initiative stat is extremely important in Starfall, it is also highly malleable/volatile within game.  Just one example: two opposing soldiers have the same initiative value of 4. One is more of a "heavy weapons specialist" while the other is a "psychic support", which means their initiative is going to be helpful in different ways. For the heavy weapons guy, his initiative will be helpful for attack rolls with his big guns, while the psychic uses his initiative more for making psychic power rolls. Their load outs are very different, and thus their initiative is valuable in different ways. Both use the same initiative for dodge rolls, sure, but this can be further manipulated based on battlefield circumstances, such as being behind cover and being "down". And initiative can always be manipulated by many different relics, as well, for different situations. Thus, it is easy to remember that each soldier has a base initiative of 4. That takes no effort on the part of either player. But it's the engaging nature of the game and battlefield that makes those stats meaningful in unique ways.

I hope that answer is helpful! What do you think? Love the questions and please feel free to hit me up with any more you may have along the way! Thanks again for checking out Starfall!  :-*

Thanks for the comprehensive answer.  I hadn't really considered how the weapons loadouts could adjust Initiative a bit, so that answers some of my concerns.

I get where you're coming from in terms of balance being easier with only the one stat, I guess I'm just coming from a different placein terms of what I'm looking for - I got back into sci-fi gaming through playing Inquisitor (in 28mm) and have been looking for a game that's a bit slicker in combat terms, but still has lots of detail and individual character.  I'm less concerned about competitive balance as I'm more after scenario-driven games (either friendly consensual, or GM-led)l

All that said, the game does look fun & I'll certainly see if I can rope my local club into running a few games to see what it's like.

Regarding Initiative values, you can always create some for yourself (unless Burma44 threatens to send the thought police over of course  ;D).

Mr Author, from your experience how long do these games play out on average? I realise this could depend on how many units in action.

*whispers into earpiece, summoning the secret Thought Police*

Haha. But in all seriousness, I think it all works really well as is, but peeps are always free to tweak as their needs require. As long as it's just a game with a friend, you could be playing with lego soldiers and rubberbands for all I care. lol

To answer your great question, Ragsta, the standard game time is 2-3 hours. The standard game limit is about 8-9 soldiers per side, on average, with 3-4 models for the most elite focused warband and 16 soldiers maximum for the swarmiest warbands. If you bring the limit down, as all are free to do, the game could be as quick as an hour or less. When playing in a campaign, there will be a "Post-Battle Regroup" with very light inventory and upgrade work, but even that wouldn't take more than 15mins max (and that's just as fun as playing a match, me thinks!).

Hope you give it a go, Ragsta! Thanks for checking it out!

Currently working on new scenarios for campaign play! Will work great for one-off games as well. Creating scenarios for 2,3,4,5, and 6 players. All of them include a secondary objective that involves securing "Illicit Caches", which is basically space-treasure that can be opened after a battle and the loot inside goes into your warband's inventory for later use.

What scenarios have you always enjoyed from other skirmish games? What scenarios have you always dreamed of playing, but have never seen before? Would love the hivemind's input!

Sweet looking forward to seeing these scenarios.
Probably my favourite scenario in any game is hidden treasure from mordheim it’s where there is a treasure marker in a random building and you have to roll to search to find it.

You have to search every building and roll a 12 on 2 d6 to find it and the last building searched auto has it if it can’t be found, it’s just carnage to play.

Wyrdstone hunt is good too just fighting over treasure that can be carried by warriors when found.

Other than that mainly scenarios that have civilians in are cool.

Used to love me some Mordheim! Those are all classic ideas for sure, and inspiration from each is definitely in the upcoming scenarios pack. I'm up to 12 scenarios for 2 player matches, 6 for 3 players, 6 for 4 players (3 team, 3 free for all), and a secret objectives system for 5 and 6 player matches (which also includes a teams mode) that creates an endless variety of crazy shenanigans. And then caches as secondary objectives in every single scenario... Campaigns in Starfall are gonna be epic.

Oh for sure! I was skeptical at first but when the exclusive character/alien models just started pouring out, I knew I had to bite the bullet start dropping $$$. Haha. It looks like they should scale really well with 40k. Absolutely stoked to use them all for Starfall! If you went all in, you should have enough models for at least 3/4s of all 20 Starfall factions. It's like it was made for it! Haha.

How'd you like the psychics video? Any particular Starfall warbands you're looking at getting into? (I know you've got the models for nearly everything!)

Yeah the video was great. Ther’re all easy to follow for the uninitiated... like me. Are you going to do a full example battle report after all the intro videos are done?

The warband I’m looking forward to getting done first is a hive warband made out of legion of everblight warbeasts, it’s been far to long since I’ve seen shredders running around mauling people on the table top  :D

But that being said there’s a tonne of other ones rolling around in my head nomadic raiders just look to fun to pass up aswell.

Awesome! Well, whatever warbands you come up with, do be sure to share here and everywhere! Love your work and I'd be thrilled to see it in use for Starfall.

I would love to do a full battle report someday, but at the moment I live in Southeast Asia, in a country where TT is virtually nonexistent. Hoping to change that as the months pass! 😉

I'm most looking forward to the campaign rules. We've just started up a Necromunda campaign, so anything new will have to take a back seat for a while, but what you've shown so far looks great and I hope I won't have to wait too long to try it out myself.

Just joined this community to let you know I think you have something special with your STARFALL project.

Hey Kontuz! Thanks so much for the love and support! Your kind words of encouragement are making my day! I too believe that Starfall is really something special. Played another couple games of it today (pic below) and I was quickly reminded just how fun and exciting it can be. Not too fluffy, but not too overbearing. Just right. Hope you get to play it soon! The campaign supplements drop in less than 24hrs!

Sweet! Thanks for the new packs, I'm printing out all the rules this week and then its go time!
I've decided to use my Infinity models for my starter games as they don't see enough play, because as much as I love Infinity... It is way to taxing on the brain  o_o.
It look simple enough to have a small lvl of UC for a couple of solo games to iron out the rules and take them up to my group to convince them to have a go.

Great to see the new supplements!

I tried to register on your forum, but got an error about the length of my password, even though it was longer than the minimum.

Anyway I quickly looked over the new supplements, and I like them, especially the idea of the gradually evolving Alpha during campaigns.

I noticed a small discrepancy with the rules for earning AP in the Campaign rules. Page 4 and pg 6 seems to cover the same process, but on pg 6 the rules seem more general, "applying 4 wounds or more" vs "eliminates by half the wounds or more (rounding down)." I'm pretty sure you mean for the pg 6 version to be the final one.

So jazzed to hear you'll be playing soon, Darathar! I am super jazzed to see your fantastic models in play for Starfall! I hear ya on Infinity, btw. I was instantly turned-off by it at a convention when I watched three friends debate over a single action for like 10mins straight.

I think you'll pick up Starfall super-quick with only a couple of small games, no doubt. Building warbands can, intentionally, take a long time because there are some many fun combos and options, but the game itself moves at a really decent and smooth pace. Maybe start with 60uc per side and go from there. Once you have the order dice and attack/dodge roll system down, it's all strategy and fun from then on! Do take lots of pics and let us know how everything goes!  :-*

Hey Kontuz! So glad you're getting right into Starfall! That's a GREAT catch on the rules, and thanks for letting me know early on! The ruling is actually meant to be the "applying 4 wounds or more" wording (as it's much easier to track). I had updated it in one spot, but missed the other. I just fixed the inconsistency and uploaded the new document! Thank you again!

Also, did you manage to get into our forum, finally? Would love to have you there!

I'm putting together a quick "Path" themed warband to get a handle on how to build lists in SF. I have a general question, do the psychics take all known abilities of their school, unless otherwise restricted, and at no additional cost?

The band I'm working on has 8 uc to spare, and no optional equipment left to buy, is there anything I can do to soak up these credits?

[Removed comment on training rod, it's melee only.]

Hey Kontuz! Glad to hear you're jumping into Starfall!

All psychics, unless specifically noted, know and can attempt to cast all of the abilities listed in their Psychic School. Also, unless noted, these abilities do not cost the player any extra UC to use. The psychic typically knows all of his abilities listed and can attempt to cast them without cost.

The Path "Peacetime" is a super fun warband, but can be a tough one to learn the basic rules with, as they rely upon a lot of psychic power and close combat. The Path "Wartime" is a great warband as well, but definitely drops the psychic power and close combat reliance for more guns and troops. Not sure which selector you're going with, but sorry to hear you have 8uc left over! Since Open Play Matches can be fluid with UC limit from match to match, maybe create a match-up where the opponent to your Path list is limited to the total your Path warband is currently at.

Enjoy your game and be sure to let us know how it goes! Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. I rearranged a few options and was able to spend the complete 120 for the peacetime Path warband. Got a spare Android out of it, just under that 48 uc limit! :)

I'm planning out an Inquisition warband as an opposing force, and I've come up with a few more questions, if you don't mind.

Are psychic attacks allowed as fire actions in response to assaults? For example, attempting to "Push" the attacker out of charging range, or over a ledge, etc.

Can figures switch between primary and secondary weapons on the fly? Eg, advance fire with one weapon and focus fire with the other.

If a player can choose what to equip for primary and secondary weapons, are there any limitations on what can be called a secondary or primary weapon?

If a figure has already lost its primary weapon, does the School of Order power Dismantle destroy any secondary weapon?

Can a figure equip two Scripts of Retribution and reroll each attack twice? If it had one Script of Retribution and one Script of Balance could it also reroll twice?

Would the skill Weapons Mastery not apply to focus fire, but Deadeye 2 would?

Glad to hear you made it work! The Path peacetime is probably the most limited warband selection wise-apart from maybe Hunters- as it really focuses on the Jedi..er...Knight and his abilities. Fantastic questions, all of which I can help ya with!

1) Yes. As it’s a legit “Fire” order, this can certainly include attempting to cast psychic abilities. Just remember the focus of the ability must target the assaulting model and any initiative mods still apply. Push (or Halt) is a fantastic idea for this situation!

2) Yes. The soldier may fire with any single weapon or grenade equipped. Mechs get to fire both weapons equipped.

3) On page 3 of the latest warband anthology (the one with errata 2), there are listed clear instructions on how weapons should be slotted in “Primary” and “Secondary” slots. Be sure to check that out.

4) I don’t have the anthology on hand atm, so I can’t quite remember the exact wording of either script. I would say it’s legal as long as there are no other restrictions listed. I have not clarified if only one relic can be used in a “Down” order or multiple. For now, go with multiple being legal, as it makes sense to me and that’s how it would be played as written. Should be fine.

5) I believe that’s correct. Weapons Mastery intentionally only mentions “Fire” order and not “Focus Fire”, as Focus Fire implies a serious concentration on a single shot (two shots for mechs) and is this excluded.

Hope those answers help! Stoked to see what you come up with!

Thanks, I had the latest version, just overlooked that. So I guess secondary weapons are always safe from Dismantle, since it calls out primary weapons and grenades.

The entry for Script of Retribution is:"Once per scroll taken, when the soldier who bears this script rolls an attack roll, after the opposing player rolls his dodge roll, the controlling player may choose to re-roll his dice result."

I can see taking the Script of Redemption:
"Once per scroll taken, when this soldier executes an order that results in rolling 2D6 for any reason, the controlling player may choose to re-roll his dice result."

And combining it with any other scroll to get two optional rerolls for 3uc.

Title: STARFALL renamed/relocated to STAR BREACH: same great game!
Post by: Burma44 on June 22, 2018, 04:16:35 AM
So very long, very ridiculous legal story short, Starfall (The FREE multiverse, sci-fi, tabletop skirmisher) has been officially renamed Star Breach, and can be downloaded for free in all it's glory at our new domain: https://www.starbreach.com (https://www.starbreach.com)

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, Star Breach has a simple aim: Any Sci-Fi Universe. Any Sci-Fi Models. 20 Unique Factions. Tournament and Campaign Mode. Forever Free to Play.

Along with the name change, there have been some light rule tweaks throughout the rules and documents (but nothing too major). Whether you're a new player or a vet, thanks for checking out the game, and I'd love to see what you come up with in the comments bellow! Welcome to Star Breach!

One of the more annoying bits of the mandatory name change was having to rename our YouTube Channel, scratch all of our old promo/how-to vids, and eventually redo them. But I finally got the channel settled, and I’m excited to bring new content to the table(top).

Here’s the new “trailer” video for Star Breach! Enjoy! Share! Like! Subscribe! Play Star Breach! It’s free!

Played a few games of Star Breach over the weekend, blog entries to come, but a couple of points I wanted to raise.

How many of the available psychic powers does my Psyker get? Couldn't find that anywhere.

Not that it matters too much, as I soon discovered that the only one worth using was the "Freeze" Plasmid. My Ancient Machine Seer took the Psychic Prowess 1 Alpha Skill, which meant a 4+ roll on 2D6 was all that was needed to knock out my opponent's Alpha for an entire turn, rendering them useless.

I've played Bioshock, so I was wondering if the Plasmids were more the "thrown object" style from that game, but the rules seemed to imply that cover would provide no benefit.

If I'm not playing the game properly, that would make some sense, but from my reading, if I take Psykers and give them the Psychic Prowess skills, I can lock out my opponent's best units and win pretty easily.

Thoughts?

Hey Hat Guy!

First and foremost, thanks for playing Star Breach! Very happy to hear you’re giving it a go.

Fantastic feedback! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. For most psychics, they can use any and all abilities that are granted to them by their school. There are some exceptions, and those are specifically noted when present. It’s funny you caught and mention “Freeze” within your first games. That is an ability one of our longtime play testers just mentioned this week as well! Haha. It is probably too OP at the moment, yes. I may be nerfing it a bit so that it has a range of attack (thinking 18” to negate alpha strike silliness), and so that it brings the target’s movement and initiative down to 2. The effect will still remain for only a turn long. Try that in your next games and let me know how it goes! And yes, psychic abilities all around are not impacted by cover (one of their advantages since only one or two psychics are on the table per team, per game).

Since you’re playing Ancient Machine, there is a weapon that will also need to be updated: Searing Razors. Searing Razors should read range 6”, attack rolls per target 3, no wound mods, +3I in close combat. At the moment, it’s broken because it doesn’t list a range but says “melee” instead. It’s the only weapon we missed in the latest errata (40+ page anthology, with one editor and a few play testers, I count that as a win. Haha).

Very excited to read your review! And I do hope you play many more games and continue to share your adventures and thoughts! As a free and community focused ruleset, we’re always looking (and freely able) to tweak our beloved game until it’s just right! :)

Lots of fantastic, sci-fi skirmish games getting released lately. Awesome! But there is only one sci-if game that has rules to support every sci-fi warband imaginable, allows you to use any models, and is completely free to use for both tournament and Campaign play: Star Breach! Imagining Chaos Horrors vs. Aleph? Rogue Traders vs. Adeptus Mech? Gene Stealers vs. Strontium Dog? Yes to all, and so much more! Any sci-if skirmish is already imaginable and playable for completely free at starbreach.com.

Hey all! Hope you’ve all been able to recently enjoy Star Breach! Welcome new players who are just checking us out now at starbreach.com! Four super-fun announcements:

1) A very VERY small errata is necessary for the Warbands Anthology supplement (it’s for a weapon that is unusable in its current state). I will upload the small fix on Sunday. HIT ME UP NOW IF YOU CATCH ANYTHING ELSE. Also, the Psychic Schools supplement will be getting it’s first ever errata on Sunday as well, with lots of tiny balance tweaks. Those *should* be the last fixes for a long while.

2) I will be making a new video for game play mechanics (to replace the old ones from “Starfall” days) to help give visuals for new players. I’ve been super busy lately, but I hope to have the video up in the next few weeks!

3) If you have a TT gaming blog/vlog—or know a friend who does: I’ve got a very modest cash gift for those players who are willing to review Star Breach and feature it on their site before the end of the year! It is a free game, supported by an indie community, so don’t imagine too large a stack of cash. Haha. Hit me up for details!

4) I’ll be soon looking for a new, indie model company to do Star Breach Prize Packs for our Fall 2018 season organized play! James Sheriff with Brass Monkey was a fantastic first season supporter! We’ll have him back for future seasons, for sure! But yes, if you/a friend are interested in being our Fall artist hit me up ASAP!

That’s all for now! Have fun! Breach Stars! Play/Support free, indie TT games!

Been back in full swing at the painting table! Just finished a batch of Mantic Rebs models that I will use in Star Breach for a number of different warbands: Nomadic Raiders, The Resistance, Intergalactic Marshals, Continuum Syndicate, et al. Fantastic models for adding alien flavor to any generic space soldier group.

I have now moved on to a grip of GW Nids, which I will be using as Hive/Hive Cult models in Star Breach. Uniform in color and feel, like any good spacebug horde, but lots of fun weapon variations for different builds.

Enjoy the pics! Play Star Breach! Starbreach.com

Bravo sir, you've given me some direction for my RT miniatures that have been collecting dust for too long! I'll be having a play around with the rules soon, they seem perfect for the kind of narrative driven scenario play I enjoy so much - the only problem is, you've now sorely tempted me to start tracking down Dr Who models for a Dr Who/40k crossover campaign!  :o

Keep up the good work, good sir, and I'll report back when I manage to get a game in :D

***Model Sculptors Opportunity***

Star Breach is growing fast (FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/198523234074229/) and now has organized seasons of play for tournaments and campaigns. These in turn proudly support independent sculptors and model companies from all over the world.

We’re now looking for a new sculptor/model company who is interested in putting together a “Star Breach Prize Pack” for Fall 2018 (Sept-November). The prize pack can be old models you’ve already created and casted, or new ones of your own creation! As long as your models are 28-32mm and sci-fi, we’re game!

Here's the list of perks for our sculptors (there are no "downsides", so I don't have a list of those ):
-Star Breach organized play groups order through and pay you directly for a 3-6 model prize pack to support their campaigns and tournaments. They buy from you directly, and I take zero cut! (usually our sculptors charge about $20-$30 per prize pack, depending on what they are offering).
-Free web-flyer that features the models in your prize pack.
-Free promotion of your company and sculpts on our website, FB group, and YouTube channel!
-Opportunity to sell and move your sci-if model backline with new customers, while also potentially sculpting a Star Breach inspired model(s)!

If your an indie model sculptor or company and this opportunity interests you, contact me ASAP at elijahkellogg @ gmail . com. Thanks!

Hi Burma44, Haven't downloaded the rules I just watched the new introductory video, and wanted to get a couple of things straight. So the Order Dice Phase is NOT just the order which the characters are activated as I wrongly first assumed (ie which would be first die out the bag out is 4 and goes fourth, second die out is 1 and so goes first , etc) , and it is NOT random-you actually decide what action that character (and which character) will do and enact it there and then.
So if two opposing characters are directed to fire on each other , (or even 4 players on one team fire at one on the other) the EFFECT is that all combat firing is actually simultaneous, even though it's all done sequentially?
Did I get that right?
The one thing that I don't get is why there have to be 20 factions, if it is totally free and open why cannot I make up my own? Is there a system to generate characteristics/abilities? How does the game limit abilities to stop creation of invincible teams?

Ah I have just downloaded everything and so it explains most of my questions.  I like it that a targeted figure can take counter actions like dropping and dodging, he doesn't have to stand and be hit.
I did dislike the idea of ready made "factions" but I see they are very generic indeed, and they have a points cost with plenty of options for variation, so please ignore the last part of my last post!

It looks to me that the factions are there to address your question about creating unbalanced teams.

I would like to know the secret sauce that went into building the lists so they each have distinct play-styles but are relatively balanced among themselves. I bet it was a difficult though rewarding experience.

Thanks for your interest in Star Breach and downloading the ruleset! Happy to hear the rules and supplements answered your previous questions, but do know that I'm here to answer any questions that may be remaining. Happy to help!

Yeah, the factions are not really ready-made as much as they are just good directors into building on your favorite sci-fi motif. Lots of options all around and I'm glad you found it to your liking. Would love to see more from you: your first warbands, games, impressions... share it all! Thanks again!

Just out of curiosity... What made you decide to create a sci-fi miniatures game?

Hello casual tea and thanks for the awesome question! For me, finally deciding to sit down and fully develop a free, sci-fi/multiverse, tabletop skirmish ruleset came from a number of catalysts.

First, at the time (which was over a year ago now), there was really very few well supported skirmish systems for the sci-di genre. GW’s Shadow War Armageddon had all but fully collapsed, Necromunda had just started back-up but was still niche to the whole gang-war theme, no one really cared to play Deadzone, let alone buy the game, and other independent offerings were just OK to me—nothing special, and most not even that fun to play. (It’s funny how a year has changed so much for the sci-fi skirmish scene with the release of the new Kill Team and the increase of indie releases for the genre. I guess a lot of people  and publishers were also seeing a void as well.) So that was one of the main factors to sit down and see what I could come up with.

Second, I had just released a free skirmish ruleset (titled NCO) for WW2 squad v squad firefights, and people were really enjoying the game and the mechanics (which is a healthy mix of Bolt Action order dice mechanics with inspirations from Frostgrave, Mordheim and even X-Wing). I liked the order dice system at the skirmish gaming level A LOT and so did others, and since I was also really itching for a solid sci-fi ruleset, I figured I’d give it a go. It worked well! Even though both NCO and Star Breach now have crucially different feels, the core mechanics of both games are still similar and are, to me and my peers, some the most sleek, intuitive and balanced mechanics in TT gaming—free or otherwise.

Third, and lastly (for now, though many more factors were at play), I wanted to make the ruleset as player accessible as possible. That meant eventually creating 20 unique factions to cover every popular sci-fi motif imaginable so that players could use any models they wanted. That meant creating both a tournament mode and campaign mode, with a massive scenarios pack for games between 2-6 players. And that also meant the ruleset and supplements were going to be free to download and use. I live and work in a very impoverished part of the world, so I wanted the rules to be even accessible to those who would love to learn tabletop games, but never be able to pay the price for expensive rulesets. The other benefit of keeping the rules free and pdf based is that I can, and have many times, update the rules as feedback comes in from our players. It’s a living document that’s completely unlimited from a product line and unbound from publishing deadlines, which  both often taint a ruleset’s balance and playability.

So yeah! That’s why! Haha. :) Hope you give the game a go and let me know what you think! Cheers!

A. Thanks for checking out Star Breach!
B. Dalek models probably best fall under the Ancient Machine warband, but you could potentially make Hunters or Contiuum Syndicate work. Predators are obviously Hunters, but the models could work with Corrupted L’Orani or Hive Cult as well.
C. If you make that game happen, I need pictures.

Ha, wow thanks, that is quite the comprehensive response. I asked the same question of Sean Sutter of Relicblade and Ash Barker of GMG at Adepticon. I always am interested to hear game creators motivations. They are often surprisingly varied. I look forward to reading through these rules and giving them a try!

Well, it’s a fantastic question. I wish I was able to get out to conventions and plug the game more (I used to do a lot of demoing for Frostgrave when it first came out all over the WestCoast). Now I live in Southeast Asia and it’s tough enough to find a couple of guys willing to sit down and tabletop at all! Haha. I look forward to hearing what you think about the ruleset and game! Cheers!

Since the Star Breach ruleset launched in January, we have seen literally thousands of unique visits to the website and downloads of the game and supplement. Feeling really honored and humbled by such a fun year of sharing my project with the world and watching players fall in love with the system!

As for me, even as it’s creator, Star Breach has completely reinvigorated my love for the tabletop gaming hobby: modeling, painting, playing, the whole package! I decided to celebrate a great first year for the game by compiling a big ‘ol gallery of pictures from all the Star Breach projects I finished this year. You can check out that gallery here: https://www.starbreach.com/forum/modeling-and-painting/elijah-s-star-breach-projects-2018-wrap-up (https://www.starbreach.com/forum/modeling-and-painting/elijah-s-star-breach-projects-2018-wrap-up)

Bellow is just a small taste of what you’d find at the link. As for here at the LAF, I just wanted to say, “Thank You! Cheers! Huzzah!” to all the hobbyists out there who have loved on Star Breach and given it a fair go. Your support has been invaluable and I appreciate you all. Here’s to a wonderful new year of Star Breach in 2019! Don’t sleep on it. It may be your new favorite ruleset for sci-fi skirmishes, and we’ve got a lot more fun to come!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  :)

That's quite nice! I'm also happy to see The Terminators in there, i got the Genisys Starter and haven't done anything with it because no one in my area plays it, they were one of the reasons i got interested in this game in the first place (also can you do anything with the Endo Crawlers? they make sense on the original but not sure if here). The same should be said of a couple of out of print things i have around somewhere, the fact that their original game is defunct doesn't matter now (i'll finally be able to play with the Starship Troopers wargaming miniatures!), not to mention the possibility of getting stuff that wasn't ever in a wargame and using it on one (no idea what right now but it'll happen, i just know it lol ).

Now i gotta learn this game (from what i've seen it shouldn't take long), and then entice a few people into playing it too. I imagine after the holidays i'll get into this. Happy Festivus or whatever you celebrate!

Thanks for the kind words, jherazob! All of those minis have wonderful homes in Star Breach, no doubt! You can even use the endo crawler models in interesting ways, such as a “razorbot swarm” in the Ancient Machine warband. The Genesys Resistance fighters work perfectly for a couple of Star Breach warbands as well. Definitely get into it! Would love to see what you come up with here!

Np  :D. I find that the less complicated the AI rules are for your adversaries the easier solo and cooperative games run. Save complexity for games where you only have to worry about what your running.

I'm also looking forward to these new modules.

I've played Gloomhaven solo and I like its AI. Each troop type uses a small deck to randomize its current action. Bosses have more abstract actions that can be customized for the particular scenario they're in.

In terms of Star Breach, you could have various tables for the different types of units in each faction. When activating a unit, determine its action randomly, say by drawing a poker card and applying it to the unit's table. For simple units maybe only use the value of the suit, if it needs to be more complex you could also use the rank. Simple tables lead to streamlined play, complex tables, well, it might be hard to come up with complex but appropriate behavior, but the underlying mechanism for it would be there.

I still haven't tried out the rules, but for solo games I would take a look on Two Hour Wargames, they have a nice set of rules for solo games. I think good solo rules should have realistic movement (from cover to cover for example) and some randomness to keep the game interesting.

NEW ALL-IN-ONE, FULLY CROSS-REFERENCED, FULL COLOR PDF 2.1 RULEBOOK LIVE NOW!

AND FREE AS ALWAYS AT STARBREACH.COM (http://STARBREACH.COM).

Just a few days ago now I was honored to host the world's first ever, official Star Breach tournament! It was an absolute blast here in Chiang Mai, Thailand! We had six players at three tables, and played for a total of three rounds (per the Star Breach tournament rules). The event was unbelievably smooth, and the rules held-up near perfectly under the pressure of nine games and six completely different warband builds. We were able to track the few superficial mechanics that needed a little tweaking, and I am happy to say those changes have been already made and integrated into the new PDF, which is available right now!

Here's some pics of our fantastic day! I hope Star Breach can bring you as much joy as it does me in this new year of gaming! And there's still just so much more fun to come!

Thanks jherazob! The main rules only take up 12 pages, so I always felt like the project was pretty small. But when I put them together with all the supplemental materials, and was editing as one document—even being the author—I was blown away that that the book totaled over 100 pages! Was really taken aback by that. Thanks for the love and appreciation for the game and hard work! That’s what makes it all worth it to me!

Hey everyone! Update and a big question:

So my newborn daughter had a stroke three days after birth and was in the NICU for the past 14 days. By the grace of God, she survived and was left relatively unharmed in any serious way except for regular seizures (which are under control now by common seizure medication). She was released yesterday, and is now doing great. Naturally, this event totally put me out of commission for multiple weeks. Also, this event has drastically altered my family’s timetable for the rest of this year and next. I am going back to the USA a year earlier than planned and will then be back in Southeast Asia a year sooner.

All the cards on the table: I wanted to Kickstart a proper, small-batch, full-color, hard-covered Star Breach rulebook in the fall of 2020, when I was back in the states late next year. Now it looks like I’ll be back THIS YEAR in August 2019, but gone for another two years starting January 2020. So I’m in a bit of a weird timing issue: I want to make a book, but I wanted some more time, but now If I wait, I’ll be waiting for waaaaay too much time. Haha.

Apart from some *exclusive* scenarios and rules expansions, the text of the book is pretty much ready to roll, and I have five incredible artists from all over the globe currently making artwork for the book (very small, incredible sample below by one of our artists, PanPingTing). It’s gonna be fantastic. The core game rules will still remain forever free online in PDF, but without the artwork, expanded scenarios and expansion rules, and legit rulebook feel (plus other tabletop goodies).

SO HERE’S THE QUESTION:

If an official Star Breach hard-cover rulebook was printed THIS FALL/WINTER, along with other cool things like special order dice and tokens, would you Kickstart it and support it among your gaming circles? And if you did, what would you hope to get and how much would you pay for it all?

Thanks for helping me out with this and supporting our beloved game! Cheers!

Damn, dude, that's tough, glad she's OK now.

As for the KS, i for one would let people know, no doubt about it. I'm in Europe though, so not sure i'd go with a physical pledge as shipping might raise it too much, i'd probably go with whatever digital-only pledge is available.

I was following a just completed KS for Zone Raiders (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/346620204/zone-raiders-a-miniatures-campaign-skirmish-game/description). I think it used a good format that you might want to pick over for your own use. That campaign got a very nice boost when they were able to show it off at the Las Vegas Open convention while in mid campaign, where they demoed the rules and made a youtube video to share on KS.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Damn, dude, that's tough, glad she's OK now.

As for the KS, i for one would let people know, no doubt about it. I'm in Europe though, so not sure i'd go with a physical pledge as shipping might raise it too much, i'd probably go with whatever digital-only pledge is available.

Thanks for the love! My daughter is now doing absolutely wonderful and showing very little signs of residual effects. Very thankful.

I will be launching the KS this fall, indeed. I think you may be surprised by the price (in a good way) when all is said and done. Will keep you posted! And, as always, the digital PDF version of the ruleset will still be free! :)

Sorry to hear about your daughter, glad that her seizures are under control.
RE the kickstarter, I probably wouldn't be a backer for much the same reason as jherazob, being in UK.

Thank you for the support! My daughter is doing wonderful now. As I had mentioned to jherazob, I think you will find the price point fairly competitive when the KS launches in the fall. I'll keep everyone posted! :)

I do suspect it'd be a good idea to have somebody spreading the word in the wargaming conventions, even if it's just a friend running demos somewhere. Adepticon and Salute are over, what's the next one, GenCon? I've never been able to attend any so i'm not keeping tabs on them

Great news. I look forward to the launch.

If you haven't already you should consider reaching out to people who put on good independent reviews of miniature skirmish games and see if they have an interest in reviewing your work. I'm thinking of people like Joel Eddy of Drive Thru Games and Ash Barker of Guerrilla Miniature Games.

Best of luck in all you do.

Yeah, I live in Southeast Asia, but I am from California and will be back in August through January this year and next (thus squeezing in the KS sooner rather than later). I hope to hit at least two or three large, local conventions within that time frame before and after releasing the book via Kickstarter and then returning back to Southeast Asia. I wish I could do a booth at the "REALLY BIG ONES", but I'm simply not in country during those times, unfortunately.

Thank you for always being super supportive, Kontuz! Since the rules are already available and free, I would love to have a bunch of people--especially a few "bigger names"--give a proper review and promotion of the system before going live on KS. I hope to have a least a couple!

A couple weeks ago I had the wonderful privilege of doing Star Breach’s very first podcast interview with my new friend Sam from Paintbrush and Dice! The episode is now LIVE at http://paintbrushanddicepodcast.com/ and if you love talking about miniature gaming and rules design, I think you’ll really enjoy it. Hear about some fun stories from my personal gaming life, how I came to create Star Breach, and why I think Star Breach is such a great game for all TT gamers everywhere. Check it out!

Just came here after skimming the rules to show some support.  I found you via a thread in the Fantasy section here that mentioned Realitys Edge..so i went to look that up and discovered this gem instead.

The weight of the game seems just about perfect for me.  I'm fairly new to this hobby and my preference is for SOBAH weight games at the moment.

I backed the zombicide invader KS and i think this will be a perfect way to make use of the minis outside of the boardgame itself.

I echo the sentiments of others pertaining to reaching out to independent youtube personalities.  I've jumped into more than a couple of games based on Ash BArkers videos.

Good luck!

Wow! Thanks for reaching out and sharing the love, Dark choda! I actually went all in on the ZI Kickstarter as well, literally just for this ruleset (as well as just buying a bunch of old AT43 models, as well as just buying a bunch of SW Legion models... wait is this model agnostic thing with a game of 20 factions a blessing or a curse? Lol).

I think you've joined Star Breach at a really exciting time, and I hope you and friends love what you find. As you build warbands for the game and play a few matches, definitely feel free to share with us here, on our FB group, Instagram... wherever we're found! Enjoy, and thanks again for the kind words and excitement!

We’re coming to Kickstarter!!!

This October, Star Breach is launching a VERY limited edition (350 copies) full color, fully illustrated, hardcover, 130+ page rulebook! It’s going to be BEAUTIFUL, with illustrations from talented artists from all over the world (like this cover image from Jean Francois Robert -incredible right!?) Along with the rulebook campaign, I will be touring around this fall in the Southwest US to demo the game at a number of stores and conventions!

Much more to say and many fun surprises to come, but all in good time! And don’t be mistaken: the same exact rules will still be FOREVER FREE on our website in a plain PDF at starbreach.com (http://starbreach.com)!
Spread the word and thanks for all the support!

So here’s a super fun reveal for the upcoming Star Breach KS in October! As many of you know, the game’s initiative system is an order dice draw. You can always use regular D6 dice for order dice, but these KS exclusive sets are gonna be an awesome alternative! The symbols are useful for other games as well, and since they’re numbered, they’re still great for active rolling as well!

These are the factory pre-production samples. The black dice may end up with a lighter blue ink in the end. The sets will come in packs of 12 dice. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

That currently is the only drawback I can see to, beyond possibly postage..

Still nice dice idea, and always can use another cap

I certainly hope we can move 350 copies! And I hope you can help us! Haha. I think you’re much more optimistic than I am, as I think there will be enough for everyone who’s currently interested, and then some. But I’d love to be wrong! Haha.

If I am wrong, there is a very strong possibility we can expand the order number in increments of 10 or so. So if we see enough overage interest, we can most likely work something out.

Thanks! We have an interesting solution for international shipping, which will involve a flat rate (at the expense of a bit of my profit margin for those more difficult locations) and introducing international pledges a bit higher in the tiers, where enough material is sent for a group of players and not just one. Thus, if friends go in together, they will get a WAY better shipping rate than if I allowed single bits and bobs to go out in expensive small packages for only one player at a time. I think peeps will dig it! :)

I can see the Star Breach demo events are now listed on the Strategicon site. What's the format for the demos?

I'm thinking I can bring a warband or two, if that fits in with how you want to run the demos. What point levels will the games be played to?

Hey Kontuz! Excited to see you there!

The demos will be on 2x2’ areas of play, and players will be playing with precomposed warbands that equal up to 90uc total. Basically, these games will give players a quick taste of the action without overwhelming them. It also means I can help teach up to 6 players at a time (in 1v1 settings) in a limited space. Gonna be super fun!

Star Breach had an AMAZING weekend out at War Room Games in Las Vegas and MaricopaCon in Phoenix! Overall, we demoed the game to over 35 different players and many, many more came by to checkout the action and get info on the game. Many players enjoyed the game so much that they came by to play again later in the day! It was a fantastic three full days of gaming, and now I’m even more excited to be demoing this week at StrategiCon’s Gateway in LA this weekend. Come out an play if you’ll be in the area!

Kickstarter for the hardcover coming October 2019!!! The PDF is as free as ever at starbreach.com (http://starbreach.com)

Star Breach had yet another wonderful weekend out at StrategiCon’s Gateway LA 2019. Got to demo the game for another 20 new players, and I even got to play with lots of you guys here from the forum, which was awesome!

After seeing 25+ games between brand new players over two different convention weekends, we were really pleased to find just how well the ruleset held up. There was not a single major issue found, and many players came back for two or three games. Indeed, many players mentioned that they’d be very down to back the hardcover rulebook. Awesome! That being said, I did find a couple things that I think need a little tweaking towards perfection, so I’ve gathered my data and will be putting out one final version update (v2.3) this Thursday. This will be the last update to the PDF before the final draft of the rules for the hardcover book in October. Hope you all enjoy it! And thanks again to all the players I saw over the past couple weekends! It was a blast playing Star Breach together!

1) As promised, v2.3 is now up for download on the website! This is the last rules update before our final draft in October for the hardcover book KS. Specific rule edits in comments.
2) I got mail. (See picture.) These lovely order dice will be broken into sets of twelve and available in different quantities through our Kickstarter in October. Looking good!

So the final of three **STRETCH GOALS** for our Kickstarter (starting October 15th) will be a custom sculpted model, crafted by Patrick Keith at Bombshell Miniatures! If we hit the goal, all Kickstarter backers will receive this Star Breach exclusive mini in their order! Yay! BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP IN CHOOSING THE DESIGN!

We'd like to base the model on one of the book's illustrated soldiers. I've chosen four personal favorites, and then I’ve invited everyone across our social media communities to vote for the final choice! You can vote and follow the results via Instagram or in our FB group (search Star Breach for either) or you can vote below! The soldier illustrations are listed below by number. Just post a reply with the number(s) you like best and why!

*Note that the model will not be necessarily posed like the illustration, but whatever model is chosen will be posed dynamically and, possibly, with a couple of optional bits.

POLL ENDS ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 7TH. The model will be decided on shortly after. Cheers!

And the winner of our Illustration-to-Model vote (soundly taking first place across all platforms of Star Breach's social media) is Jens Bengtsson's Reptilian Soldier! Congrats Jens! Thus, if we reach our final stretch goal for the KS (starting Oct 15th), everyone will be getting a free 28mm soldier model inspired by this illustration and sculpted by Patrick Keith at Bombshell Minis. It's gonna be fantastic!

So as many have already found, last night, with great certainty and a new hope moving forward, I chose to cancel the Star Breach Kickstarter campaign. We had an incredible first 24hours and hit over 40% funded, but there were a number of crucial mistakes in the structure of the project which would have ultimately made for a bumpy road towards final funding, if funding at all. For a more detailed assessment as to why I decided to cancel, you can check out the KS's second and final update. But, really, I think the reasons why I cancelled are actually best understood in light of the reasons why I am super excited to be relaunching a Flash Fund for the project on our website, at starbreach.com (http://starbreach.com)!

From next Tuesday, Oct 22, to Nov 12, Star Breach will be running a Flash Fund: where players can order the hardcover rulebook, a deluxe pdf rulebook, and any sets of order dice they wish, all in any bundle combination of their choosing. No limiting pledges. No minimum funding required. Shipping will be personalized for each backer, and everything ordered will still be shipped by early December this year, right in time for the holidays! Woot!

I'm also exploring the idea of regular distribution for order dice (with NEW COLORS!) and the deluxe pdf in the coming year. And of course, I am still planning on releasing HUNTERS, our co-op and solo missions expansion set in the Star Breach multiverse in the new year as well!

So all that to say, THANK YOU. Thank you all for your love and support of Star Breach! I really appreciate you sticking with me on this journey to put out some cool stuff for our beloved, FREE FOREVER, ruleset! By picking up a deluxe rulebook, you'll be supporting the game's growth and blessing our amazing artists, sculptors, and painters who put a lot of hardwork into making Star Breach look just as amazing as it plays! See you on the site next Tuesday!

What'll be in the deluxe pdf rulebook? The same content as the freely available one, but with the new illustrations. or something else?

The Flash Fund is now LIVE on our website! Check out starbreach.com/flashfund to pickup some order dice sets, a deluxe PDF, and a signed/numbered limited print hardcover rulebook. Extremely limited quantities, so order soon!

And here’s a big announcement: Starting next year, Star Breach and I will be officially joining the Slow Death Games family! This opportunity is incredibly exciting for me, as Chris and his team are longtime fans of Star Breach and masters of all things tabletop. In 2020, Slow Death Games will be publishing, stocking and distributing a Star Breach full color paperback and game accessories world wide as part of their games family, and I will join the team as a writing partner and games consultant. Lots of cool stuff to come, but one thing both Slow Death Games and I want you to know now: Star Breach will still have a stripped down PDF version of the rules on our website--FREE and forever available to players all over the world, from all walks of life. Thank you for the support and for celebrating this great news with us!

I still have no idea what sets the deluxe PDF apart from the standard "stripped down PDF." Did I miss it mentioned somewhere on your web site?

Hey Kontuz! So sorry I never got back to you about that. The Deluxe PDF includes all the formatting, artwork, and images of the Hardcover. The text content is virtually the same as the free, stripped PDF, but it looks a lot nicer! In the new year, the free rules online will be further stripped just bit, reducing the amount of scenarios that are included in the free rules. But that’ll be the only difference, long term. Thanks for the support, brother!

Hey all! So we’ve just finished up our first week of the Flash Fund! Thank you to all who have backed the project thus far and made an order!
Starbreach.com/flashfund (http://Starbreach.com/flashfund)

Two things:
1. There are only 18 limited edition, signed/numbered hardcover books still available. Once they’re gone, they gone for good. So don’t wait to order one! Two weeks left!
2. Slow Death Games is helping us take credit card Flash Fund orders for those who don’t do PayPal. SDG is also publishing and distributing the book and accessories in early 2020, but this will be the retail paperback and will not be available until a few months from now. Plan accordingly.

Reading through Star Breach. I'm liking what I'm seeing, but, I'm having a hard time creating teams. I have mild dyslexia and I'm wondering if anyone has some sample team sheets they would be willing to share so I can see how things piece together. (Most of my games I've been shown how to play, but this is one I'm going to have to bring to others to get them to play).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi! Quick suggestion: On the homepage you repeatedly state "Forever Free to Play", and above the PDF download link there's the "Purchase deluxe PDF" one, but i don't easily see why would a random passerby choose the Deluxe version over the standard one, you might want to put somewhere visible a clarification as to why would anybody choose to pay for it, differences and all that.

Tabletop Minions just released a video giving out "Awards" for various hobby related events or products for this past year. Star Breach made it in there at the very end, with a good summary of why it's worth a look over.

Hey Star Breach Gamers!

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying the Holidays! Just a quick update on the status of the Flash Fund Hardcover books and then a couple of cool notes.

The official 1st Edition of Star Breach was released a couple weeks ago. This will be the definitive edition for at least the next several years. The limited edition hardcover books and all remaining Flash Fund orders will ship the week of January 6th. They are currently with the printers now, and the book is looking fantastic! Many of you have already seen the deluxe PDF and are enjoying that. All the rules in the Free PDF, deluxe PDF, LE Hardcover and soon to be released retail Paperback have been perfectly synchronized. To some of yours questions: the deluxe PDF is super beautiful and thorough with additional/auxiliary rules, and the free PDF is straightforward and condensed.

Another awesome thing that happened recently (and many of you have already seen) to help close-out a wonderful 2019 for Star Breach was that we won an award! Uncle Atom at Tabletop Minions chose Star Breach as a best game of 2019!!! That’s awesome! We all already love Star Breach and know just how fun it is, but it’s very cool to receive some recognition from one the industry’s big influencers. Very exciting!

And 2020 is going to be another fantastic year for Star Breach, as we partner with Slow Death Games to put out our official softcover rulebook and order dice for retail. Star Breach will for sure be featured at both Adepticon and Salute this year, and we hope to have games popping up all over the world at different conventions and gaming groups. And so much more is still to come!!! Thanks for supporting Star Breach and playing our game!

With the limited edition hardcover in the wraps and fully delivered, very excited to announce that the Star Breach retail softcover, published by Slow Death Games, is officially taking preorders RIGHT NOW via Kickstarter!!! With less than 24hours into the campaign and well over halfway funded, the preorder price has gaming groups snapping up books like hot cakes! The campaign is also selling the Star Breach custom order dice, which is especially cool for those who missed out on getting a few sets during the Flash Fund. And there’s retail pledges, and add-ons... and, ah! Just go for it: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/slowdeathgames/star-breach-soft-cover-rulebook?ref=co9zdw&token=8a2326e4 (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/slowdeathgames/star-breach-soft-cover-rulebook?ref=co9zdw&token=8a2326e4)

Also, in other news, a one-sheet FAQ has been released on the website today to help with a few common questions. This FAQ will be updated every few months or so if/when a new situation or question comes up. Also—Star Breach will indeed be featured at both Adepticon and Salute this year, so be sure to track us down! Thanks for supporting our beloved ruleset. Enjoy!

I have backed it and as a result, two of my friends have as well.

Played my first game recently and love the simplicity.

For those who want a sort of very brief overview I would say it's a mix of a few different games you may know - watch a youtube vid to form your own view just in case mind.

It works on the basis of competing die rolls. In a similar way to say, Frostgrave. Roll 2d6, add your initiative. The defender rolls 2d6 and adds theirs, then add bonuses. Activation is random dice draw at which point you give one of 6 orders to one of your units. So for me, Frostrave with 2d6 and no treasure meets Bolt Action / GoA.

The mechanics are so simple it allows the detail to be in special rules which arguably makes the factions more unique but without being overly complicated.

Fast and furious too. I'd say that with experience you can easily get a couple of games done in a typical club night of 3-4hrs at least - we tend to chat a bit at our club.

There is a favorable review and play-through (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1JmTHZ9Zvc)  video made by Gaminggeek this week.

Spoiler, he finds StarBreach a 9/10 for sci-fi skirmish. :) I think he may have got a few points of the rules wrong, but can't fault his enthusiasm.

For fans of Star Breach and co-op/solo tabletop adventures comes our latest release announcement: Hunters! Hunters uses a lot of similar Star Breach gameplay but moves the action from “player vs. player” to “players vs game” in a high-stakes, multiple objectives, missions based rpg-lite. The free demo rules are entirely complete and come with the first full mission: “Mission 0”. Eventually the game will feature 12 full missions. All missions can be played with 1 to 5 players.

Get your free demo copy now, play through Mission 0 a few times and let me know how you like it! starbreach.com/hunters (http://starbreach.com/hunters) Enjoy!

Hey Star Breach Gamers!

So I am well aware I’ve been super quiet/secretive over the past couple months. There’s the global level things *glancesandshrugsinliterallyevery direction* of course, but my personal life has been very busy as well. That said, I have also actually been very busy (late at night) on tabletop game creating! I’ve been writing and editing like crazy, and I’m genuinely really excited for what’s in store for the rest of the year! I can’t spill everything all at once right here, but here’s some listed updates:

1. As foretold many moons ago, the official Star Breach Errata (from March) has now been fully integrated into the Free PDF ruleset on our website! Yay! So just download one doc and enjoy. The official FAQ/Errata will still be on the page as it impacts the printed works. From here on out, we’ll probably update the game with two further errata over the course of a couple years. Those updates will be to strictly to keep all warbands competitive as balance issues come to light with mass play. We won’t be doing a second edition for at least three years, so take it slow and enjoy!

2. Hunters is coming along great! We should have Missions 1 & 2 added and a beta version of the free book released online sometime next month! This will be the foundation on which we want to see more play-testing done before finalizing a 3 Mission Free PDF of the core game and then launching preorders for the full 12 Mission Deluxe Rulebook in the late Fall/Winter. Woot!

3. I’ll be honest in that I’m not certain where we’re at with our translated versions of Star Breach. I’m not being pushy considering the circumstances of the past 6 months and the fact these teams are doing the work for just for fun. I’d love to see Star Breach in French, Spanish, Italian, and German, but I think those all need a bit more time now than we originally planned for.

4. SDG has a really cool “merch” update coming down the pipeline. Keep an eye out!

4. Last, but definitely not least, I’m almost done writing the alpha version of an entirely NEW tabletop game! It should be ready for a soft announcement and serious play-testing by next week. Slow Death Games and I are going to put together a private group of testers who will get super early access to the ruleset and be responsible for reporting playtime reflections over a 4-6 month period. The group will be small (roughly 30-40players max). If you’re very serious about putting a new game through the fire, then contact Chris or I directly sometime this week. We’re gonna be choosy, so no offense if we can’t fit ya in. All in good time!

That’s what I’ve got for now. Exciting stuff in the months to come! Thank you for playing Star Breach!

This looks pretty great, it would be a great way of saving money too, that way I could make my army smaller so it could be divided into warbands instead of having to follow all the army structuring guides they have in Wh40k

Thanks TripleBackflip! Yes, many of our players really enjoy the game for that reason: it's model demand is not too heavy, and you can play with whatever models you’d like. Every time you purchase new models for another sci-fi game, they have an opportunity to pull double duty with the free Star Breach rules. :)
