The Isles are my own dark little corner I carved within the larger Warhammer: Age of Sigmar setting. It is an islolated group of islands in a perilous sea somewhere in Ulgu, the Realm of Shadows. On the Isles of Brume, people live in numerous small countries - many of them just a single fortified town with villages that feed it. The rest is forests and hills and bogs, with monsters and barbaric, wild peoples roaming about. The largest of the Isles is known as Erebos, followed in size by Nys and Morros, and then many more smaller islands and rocks. The point is to explore a tiny, out of the way bit of the Nine Realms, far away from where demigod Sigmarines fight legions of Chaos in giant cosmic battles... I've always been one for small-scale, contained settings.
I started this a year ago, so there's plenty to show. I'll begin by introducing some of the factions I've come up with so far, and their warbands. There is more about them, and more pictures, over on Gardens of Hecate blog (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.hr/p/dark-age-of-sigmar.html).

Some countries are ruled by necromancers. The Cult of Vvolos comes from one such country - Turm. They worship a mysterious Daemon Prince who calls himself Vvolos. The Cult's core is a council of necromancers. This is Iulia Docta-Sophosse, necromancer and summoner, with her warband:

Folda is a feudal city-state inhabited by deluded Ghouls who believe themselves to be human. The sovereign of this country is Abhorrant Ghoul Queen Ligia the Ever-living, a vampiric abomination. From the ruins of a large castle, she rules over a population of ever thirsty blood-drinkers and ever hungry flesh-eaters. The Queen, bestial Prince Arpad, and their ghoul soldiers:

The kingdom of Volmar sits on a mountain on Erebos, and is inhabited mostly by Duardin and Kobolds. People of Volmar are well adaped to their high-altitude life. What their own efforts at agriculture cannot supply, they trade for the riches they discover in their mines. These are some Duardin warriors in ceremonial armour:

I've been following your blog for some time and love your stuff. Welcome to LAF!
-
What a wonderful way to introduce yourself.
Top drawer eye candy galore!
:-* :-* :-*
As someone else who is putting together an alternative AoS fantasy themed project, I shall be folloowing this with much eagerness.
8)
Welcome to LAF!
Indeed.
Welcome aboard!
:D
-
Love those mins,great work 8) :-*
-
That is so much awesome, my head 'splode.
Very, very cool.
-
Phenomenal work.
-
Drop dead gorgeous conversion and paint jobs!
-
Ace - glad to see you posting here too.
You've done quite a few good iterations on those Hobbit goblin models, these are really good and I love the Duardin.
-
Wonderful stuff as ever! I think your blog is quite the best miniatures blog on the web, so it's great to see your stuff here.
It's all marvellous, but the ghoul soldiers are particularly, er, lovely.
-
It is WONDERFUL seeing you AND your incredibly inspiring work here. I have missed the folk on the Wyrd threads at WAMP.
Your forest photo stage was the inspiration for my own photo stages. Your approach to fantasy & story telling are motivating in the extreme. All VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thank you very much, everyone!
-
Fantastic! I love the setting you've come up with here. I get the feeling some Mordheim miniatures will fit in well for some of these factions....
I think the dwarves are the best, those masks / helmets are really creepy looking!
-
I'm not a fan of AoS but I can appreciate top quality conversions and paint jobs. Your work is giving me a John Blanche vibe - very well done sir!
-
Bloody amazing! A dark fairy tale given form!
-
Holy mother.
-
Thanks, everyone!
@ Diablo Jon - though I can't really blame you for the assumption, I'm not a 'sir', but 'ma'am'. ;)
-
Lovely work. I particularly like your take on the Flesh-Eater Courts. The royalty remind me of one of the Hellboy stories (high praise indeed). Nice to know I'm not the only one who sees those Hobbit goblins as the basis for some excellent conversions. :)
And of course Blasphemia is a gal's name. Doesn't anyone know their pseudo-Latin these days? :)
-
Thought I'd check this out after looking at your stunning Gothic Horror thread. There's a real John Blanche vibe about your work that I think is brilliant.
-
Thanks, everyone!
@ Diablo Jon - though I can't really blame you for the assumption, I'm not a 'sir', but 'ma'am'. ;)
oops awkward. Another life lesson, for me, about making assumptions ;D . My apologies Ana
-
missed this.
utterly brilliant.
-
Utterly fantastic, I love what you've done with the miniatures (very Hans Christian Andersen).

Thatpanel you have created there, for background, is fantastic! Do you care to tell us how it was made? Is it only for photography and display?
-
Been following your blog for quite awhile, love your stuff especially what youve done with the shadespire stuff recently
-
Thanks everyone!
Thatpanel you have created there, for background, is fantastic! Do you care to tell us how it was made? Is it only for photography and display?
Yes, this was built to serve as a photo background. I documented the process, you can see it step by step in this post: http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.hr/2017/03/cxx-making-of-forest-photo-background.html
-
Been following your blog for a good few years now, And keep up with your posts on the dark age of sigmar group, But it's great to have you on LAF! it's my fond hope that all the painters whose work i really love will migrate here and reduce the amount of tabs i need to keep open ;)
-
I'm loving the moody-gritty feel and that backdrop is awesome.
-
Another long time fan here, lovely work, nice to see you here.
-
Cheers!
Here are some shots of my warband for Legen, a collaborative project I'm doing this year with a group of friends. The goal is to meet for a multiplayer game, for which we are specifically creating warbands, board, terrain and backstory. The encounter takes place on the isle Erebos, and pits knights of various Brumean realms against a herd of marauding Gargants in the midst of their raid on an unfortunate human village. As I'm adding new members to the warband, I introduce each new arrival with a little story of how they joined Sir Pelial of Turm. With pictures, of course. Such as these:
Sir Pelial is a wandering knight, traversing the isles in search of glory and gold, and hoping Vvolos is watching. When news of gargant invasion in the north reached the knight, he recognised it as a great opportunity to prove his worth. Pelial set off northward to meet the gargants.
There are three stories so far:
Sir Pelial and the Snake King (introducing the Aelf) (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.hr/2018/02/clviii-legen-sir-pelial-and-snake-king.html)
Sir Pelial and the Two Ravens (introducing the Murdered Knight) (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.hr/2018/02/clxi-legen-sir-pelial-and-two-ravens.html)
Sir Pelial and the Tracker of Holt Megla (introducing Westcott) (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.hr/2018/03/clxvi-legen-sir-pelial-and-tracker-of.html)
The others are creating some great stuff for the project, too. If you're on Instagram, you can find it under #legen2018.
-
Great to see the pictures here! I found your blog by chance and only then understood how awesome the possibilities for conversions within the AoS universe were. Thanks for posting.
-
A very nice and original take on AoS. The conversions are fantastic and I can't wait to see more.
-
So great to see your stuff here on LAF! Your blog is one of my absolute favourites it sets a very high standard of storytelling as well as stellar painting, and really inspires me to start some Dark Age of Sigmar.
-
Thank you!
Here's the first of the raging Gargants for the Legen event: their leader Nerod. Converted from a citadel plastic giant.

-
This is superb! Very fresh and just so well done. I love it! :-*
-
fabulous work.
such skill and imagination.
-
Astonishing how much character is hidden in the plastic giant, once you use only parts of the set and move away from the standard pose. Great job!
-
Great to see this here! There's a strong sense of Brueghel about it, i think - you could slip him into the background of Dulle Griete (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dull_Gret#/media/File:Dulle_Griet,_by_Pieter_Brueghel_(I).jpg) and he'd fit in just fine.
Terrific work!
-
I love this project! What a showcase of creativity! Not the usual grimdark grimness... More like a brothers grimm fairy tale. Gr8 j0b keep it up! :D
-
Cheers, people!
Finished another giant for the Legen event:

He's a pygmy giant compared to the first one:

Quite. Simply. Phenomenal. :o
-
Oh man, this makes me just envious! The little giant looks superb. Keep up posting.
-
Finding your blog and reading through has been so madly inspiring - It's made me look upon my own hobby efforts almost with shame.
It's great to see so much imagination and creativity poured into creating a unique world in miniature. It's very much a showcase of the ideal hobby to me.
Following this I've been going back to some old projects and rethinking them with an eye for being a bit more daring with conversion and setting.
It's always such a boost to morale to find projects like this. Thanks for sharing!
-
Outstanding project, I love the paint style you have.
-
The giants are magnificent. In particular, I love the way you've given them odd proportions, so that they look genuinely monstrous, rather than just big. And the blubbery flesh and slack muscle tone works really well: too many giant miniatures look like they've been spending a lot of time in the gym, which is an odd thing for giants to be doing, given that they're stronger than everyone else!

Really interesting thought...Im still amazed by what you can learn in forums about miniature painting!
-
This is great! Such stylish and evocative paintjobs (and conversions). I'm getting a Grimm's fairytales, the old BBC Narnia series (especially Prince Caspian) and even an Attack on Titan vibe with those bulbous giants! Watching with great interest. :-*
-
Those are so exquisitely creepy and weird.
-
Man, your painting style almost makes me want to give up.
Almost, because I feel inspired more than I am scared. Such gorgeous colouring! Well done!
-
Superb painting of superb conversions. Love the overall theme & the photo arrangements!
-
Yeah, this is absolutely brilliant.
-
Thanks, people! :)
Yesterday I started building the first of four houses for the village that will be ransacked by giants in the Legen event. Here are some WIP photos of the build:

-
Beautiful work as always. The masking tape is I presume a form to build a sagging tiled roof over?
-
Yeah, I'm using the same tape method as I did on my chapel two years ago. Only on these houses now it will be thatch rather than tiles as covering.
-
Just awesome! I am rather speechless. Creative and very well executed (even though it is just a wip).
-
Awesome looking building; nice idea with the tape for the sagging roof.
-
Cheers!
It's finished now:

Ooo...that is a characterful cottage. :D
-
Wow, very impressive. The roof is nicely done.
-
Indeed, a beautiful piece of scenery!
-
You've inspired me to get back into fantasy. Thankyou.
With regards to this stunning work...
No words- should have sent a poet.
-
Welcome to LAF! Am a fan of your work and your blog. Like your aesthetic very much and how closely you adhere to it.
-
Amazing stuff.
-
Your style, imagination and execution is incredible, loving this thread. How did you do the dwarf helms/masks? They're especially striking.
-
Thanks everyone!

I sculpted them from greenstuff and milliput:

Ah, just raw skill then! Very nice.

I hosted a game the other day. We had time afterwards to take photos of recreations of key scenes from the skirmish, so I made a writeup in my usual manner. You can read the full account here: CLXXV. The Hag's Hovel Carnage. (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.hr/2018/05/clxxv-hags-hovel-carnage.html) And here are some of the pictures:

Your work continues to amaze me! A fascinating approach to Age of Sigmar!
-
Brilliant stuff! The cannibal knight is superb - both the model and the fiction!
-
That is truly fantastic...
-
Great looking game :o
-
Superb conversions and brush work. What a beautiful thread to behold loving the blog as well!
-
Wonderful stuff! Love that cottage with the thatched roof. Amazingly imaginative and skillful stuff on display here - excellent!
-
Excellent blog, one that I look at often for inspiration. The modelling and painting are excellent.
How did you find the age of sigmar skirmish rules? Did you use the official ones or the Hinterlands fan made ones? Also which books if any?
-
Thanks folks!
How did you find the age of sigmar skirmish rules? Did you use the official ones or the Hinterlands fan made ones? Also which books if any?
We didn't use a points system when choosing warbands. I simply took warscrolls for Crypt Haunter Courtier and Crypt Ghouls from the FEC book and Dire Wolf warscroll from the GW site. Vladimir, who is more familiar with the rules, made up warscrolls for his warband on the spot.
As for the AoS system on the whole, I cannot say I'm impressed. What's good about it is that it's easy to pick up and just roll dice, even with someone who has never played it before.
I find the Malifaux rules system, which I adapted and used for the mini campaign in my non-Warhammer setting, tons better for this kind of gaming. However, it takes more time to get to know the rules, and therefore it's more work in advance for whoever I want to play with...
-
Hmm seems like my hunt for suitable fantasy skirmish rules continues! I must admit that I picked up the age of sigmar rulebook and the skirmish rules out of curiosity and also found the Hinterlands pdf online which funnily enough predates the skirmish rules yet seems almost exactly the same but with a better campaign system and was free! I was hoping that with my read through that there was something more to the system that I was just missing.
Having never played malifax or seen it played I have no opinion of it, I just assumed that it seemed a more competitive game.
-
I believe that GW hired the guy who did the Hinterlands to work on their skirmish rules, due to its popularity.
-
Wow! Such beautiful ugliness! Subscribed.
-
Thanks everyone!

Those are absolutely gorgeous! You are very consistent in your design.
-
I am such a big fan of this thread that I had my own attempt at grimdark AoS (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=101286.75)!
Your work is so much better, however, that it gives me joy and inspiration! Please continue this thread.
-
@Lost Egg - thanks!
@Hammers - thank you. That's very important to me when creating worlds.
@DivisMal - Yay, I'm spreading the Dark AoS bug. Nice darkened armour on your Sigmarines. It looks especially good on Obryn.
-
Cracking thread! :o Such style and character! :-*
-
Amazing stuff, everything from the selection of models, the conversion and the painting comes together so beautifully to create this eerie world.
-
Jsut wow - amazing stuff!
-
It's a fine line between modelling and art. And you ( BB ) crossed it.
Awesome work, please keep 'em coming :).
-
Really enjoying this thread :o. These houses are beauties!! :-*
-
I love those sagging, ramshackle cottages. Very atmospheric but also quite realistic!
-
You are an inspiration. WONDERFUL STUFF!
-
Cheers!
An update: new faction on the Isles. A penitent cult formed around a lone Stormcast Questor who roams around, apparently looking for something. He ignores them most of the time as they follow him. Sometimes he talks to them a bit. They write down everything he says and does, and base their religion on that... As always, there's a full blog post about them: LINK (https://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/06/clxxvii-stormcast-questor-and-penitent.html).

Great terrain and minis :D

Love those cultists

This project is simply glorious, wonderful work.

Thanks!
A continuation of the tales of Sir Pelial of Turm and his retinue. A hound joins the party in a new story told with miniature photography, here in the newest post: CLXXIX. Legen: Sir Pelial and the Craven Cur (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/06/clxxix-legen-sir-pelial-and-craven-cur.html).

Superb! The whole Legen project is astonishing; I've been flicking through the Instagram stuff, which is jaw-dropping.
Oddly enough, I've just painted those two Ral Partha wolves - though with their riders.
Can't wait to see your Haywain devil painted up!
-
Fantastic stuff, love your style.
-
great stuff again
-
I love the forest. Terrain looks amazing. Everything looks great. Good job!
-
I'm really amazed just about how much this project still surprises me...in the positive sense. Great looking scenery!
-
Amazing looking models and scenery! I really like the way that the houses stand out from the rest of your collection being so bright but also ramshackle and dark in there own way. You will have to do a step by step when you get to the windmill!
-
This whole project just goes from strength to strength - just perfect!
-
Another fan here, amazing stuff all round. The building, the converting, the painting, the story telling, the art, everything is just astounding. :)
-
The evocative pictures continue to pull me into the Brume setting. Can't get enough.
-
A week ago the island Erebos shook from the fierce battle of Gargants and Knights, as the event we've been preparing for months finally took place here in Zagreb. You can check out my brief report on the blog: LEGEN-THE BATTLE (https://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/07/clxxx-legen-battle.html).

-
Wow, that looks like an impressive game.
-
Wow! That really looks pretty nice. A grimdark Arthurian approach that I really love.
-
Thats amazing stuff. I haven't liked any of the stormcast stuff GW have released. It looks devoid of any personality at all. BUT if they painted some of it like you have it might actually work for me. Reallynice.
I'm also going to steal your king in yellow paint scheme for my Nurgle sorcerer that has been looking at me for several years, really like that.

It really is amazing how different the Stormcasts feel with a gritty paintjob. When I was in art school we used to joke that if you wanted to make something creepy, just paint it yellow... Perfect Nurgle color, haha

Been homebrewing rules for my Flesh-eater Court warband, and that inspired me to paint something for them again. This grisly trophy is made up of remains of a yellow-robed cultist of the daemon Vvolos.
Janos the Cannibal, an infamous mordant witch hunter, likes to display these to strike fear into the hearts of worshippers and creatures of chaos that would threaten the kingdom of Folda...
I used a Chainrasp, brass rod, antlers from the Blightking kit, and putty. I'll make more of these, eventually.

Brilliant - the pillory is a particularly inspired touch.
Janos is one of the loveliest (?!) of your creations - great to see him again!
-
Gorgeous in all its gore!
-
Gorgeous indeed. :)
-
Scary. That's a reminder of who you must not mess with!
-
You really make something distinct out of the figurines everyone has. I'm loving it! :)

Would you care to do a tutorial over at Workbench on how you achieve your decayed and 'sepia' results? They are quite lovely.
-
Love your thread's theme, so much ideas
-
Absolute :o.
-
Absolutely fairy tale-like. Love and the conversions and painting. Beautifully executed.
-
Cheers!

Thanks! I like sharing my proces via tutorials, but can you please be more specific about what you'd like to see? In the meantime, I have a corroded plate armour painting tutorial that's proven quite popular, perhaps you'll find it useful: LINK (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2017/12/cxlviii-tutorial-corroded-plate.html).
-
I think he means basically every single paint stroke you make, haha. Your models have a certain quality that makes it look like your pictures were taken somewhere in the 1850's.
I, for one, am hugely jealous of your painting style.
-
Fantastic thread, very evocative painting, I think your work is a great example of how a handful of miniatures with a strong theme and tone can create a whole living world in the imagination, just looking at a few of the diorama type photos and I can almost smell the Isles of Brume :)
-
Cheers!

I have only read parts of your blog thoroughly (I've skimmed almost all of it) so perhaps you've already done other tutorials I, and I am sure others, are interested in. I am particularly interested in how you go about painting dramatic, horror faces and body parts with pale, decaying skin.
-
Yep, that can be arranged. It's good that I'm planning on expanding the ghoul faction with some more models soon-ish, so I can use those new additions as models for the tutorial.
-
Some new additions to the Folda force, and that skin tutorial I promised. You can find it both on the blog (LINK (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/10/cxcii-ghoul-knight-kazmer-defiant.html)) and here on the forum (LINK (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=112969.0)).

Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous!!! Keep it up, your plog never ceases to amaze me. Always inspiring!
-
Stunning work!
I do love your colour choices.
:-* :-*
-
Great work as always. And those Nurgle Bloodbowl models are excellent conversion material 8).
-
Agree - the witch hunters have a very Jackson's Mouth of Sauron vibe going on.
-
Did you mention somewhere what miniatures you're using? Are they converted or sculpted for this project specifically?
-
I've spent a few hours trawling through your blog and I really like you Folda faction. Very creative use of miniatures from different lines all tied together by cool plot and lovely paintjobs! :)
-
Thanks everyone!
@ van Helsing - it's mostly moderately to heavily converted GW miniatures. I do have a few of my own sculpts and some from other sources.
-
Like the new additions very much.

Folda witch hunters' newest recruits. Full post here: LINK (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/11/cxciv-ghoul-gaoler-and-bloodtracker.html).
Cruel and callous interrogators of witches, Ghoul Gaolers inspire terror. Their mastery of creative ways of inflicting pain is infamous across the Isles.

Just like their vampire overlords, ghouls can end up giving in to their feral side and gradually metamorphose into monsters with lupine features. This is the legacy of the pact made with the Duke of Wolves in the final days of the Ostrom. Janos utilises these agile predators for tracking his quarry, hence the name 'bloodtrackers'.

"The manacles and torture implements had to be sculpted from scratch." Nicely done.
-
Wow. Just wow. I really like your subvtle use of what looks like pure white hilights on the fur. That's not easy to pull off.
-
Really like the skin tones and rustyness on this page :-*
-
The ghoul gaoler is amazing. Great work.

New arrivals: moorland harpies of Folda. Thought my ghouls could use some air support, and rather than going the conventional route of giant bats I attempted to think of a satisfying alternative.

Gorgeous, BB! You are really making someething wonderful with this AoS malarky which I otherwise have no truck with. Did you modify the wings anythinig? They look much more artificial in the GW product photos.
-
Wow. Great work on these (and the art work too - really thought it was real on first flick through). And thanks for the tip of Borgnine's blog. I've painted a lot of Nurgle/zombies in my time - but you're making me think of creating something in this vein. Thank you for sharing.
-
They look brilliant!!
Before even following the link to your blog I was thinking Ronja the robbersdaughter already, soyou truly captured that feel!
-
oh my goodness, extraordinary work. Very gifted.
-
I painted these GameZone harpies years ago. I though I made them scary enough at the time, but I like you finish much better.

Thanks!
@ Hammers - The birds are very nicely sculpted; I didn't need to change anything on the wings. It's the studio paintjob what makes them look so artificial.
Your harpies look good. I like the black markings on the wings.
-
Last week I hosted the second game in the AoS28 campaign I'm playing with a friend from abroad. My ghoul witch hunters had an encounter with another witch. This time things went a bit differently.

By Sigmars pearly white teeth!!
This is amazing! I just found this thread and had to go through it all. your blog is definately on the watch list now.
-
Brilliant write up.

Totaly jaw dropping :o
-
Love the harpies and all the rest!
@ Hammers - The birds are very nicely sculpted; I didn't need to change anything on the wings. It's the studio paintjob what makes them look so artificial.
Hadn't seen those "Aetherwings" before... the studio paintjobs make them look awful and I wouldn't have looked at them twice had it not been for yours. In fact, maybe I had seen them before and they immediately passed out of mind as not worth of committing to memory. At first glance I was wondering if you were using the Malifaux shikome figures but that didn't look quite a match, so was wondering until I saw your note. Plan to get those shikome, and was just putting together and basing the Malifaux raptors this week. If you are looking for smaller winged creatures I recommend them.
-
Thanks, everyone!
@Spooktalker - the Shikome are very nice. I have looked into Mlfx Raptors, but I found them inferior to the Aetherwings (at least as far as I could tell from images). Their wings and legs look incredibly awkward to me.

I was at a gaming show a few weeks back, doing all-day painting demos again. There were sprues of sea elves, and I decided to see what can be done with minimal converting and an unconventional (for high elves) paintjob. When my test model turned out surprisingly cool, I wanted to make some more. I allowed myself greater freedom with the others, though - they were converted using putty. You can find the full post here: LINK (https://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/12/cxcviii-unplanned-aelf-warband.html).

Amazing! And great to see that old Rafm beastie again.
Your elves look properly sinister - as they should be! These look much more The Broken Sword than The Lord of the Rings, and that's a very good thing, I think.
-
Nicely done - some very effective converting to change what those sculpts protrayed.
-
Sol and Luna are members of a mystical knightly order named Knights of the Firmament. The order is dedicated to a demon named Giger, who allegedly dwells in a subterranean palace beneath their keep on Erebos. The knights travel around the Isles, spreading Giger's cult by doing great deeds, including interfering with schemes of other demons (using their followers for such tasks is is nothing out of the ordinary for demonkind). Knights of the Firmament have been known for abducting musicians, singers and songbirds, for the demon Giger is incredibly fond of music - and likes to collect performers to entertain him.

These guys are converted Perry medieval plastics. I'll be trying out The Dolorous Stroke (https://www.wargamevault.com/product/249660/The-Dolorous-Stroke) rules soon, so I'm making a few minis for the occasion. More about them in the blog post: LINK (http://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2018/12/cxcix-knights-of-firmament-sol-and-luna.html).

Okay, things just escalated quickly.
Nice sculpting of the face. For some reason they are more unsettling than your other stuff. I think it's because they remind me of the mask in Zardoz. (Or maybe it was Sean's outfit.)
-
Yeah I love your stuff. Awesome. I can't wait to see what you create next!
-
I have a feeling that I've seen those heads before, possibly in a painting, but I cant quite place them.
They're disturbing but in a good way, if that makes sense :)
-
...the sun from Teletubbies? ;):D
They do look earily familiar and kinda disturbing, especially the moon ones.
