My first Vikings are finished. I had done some on commission before, but these are my very own archers:

I'm really digging that vibrant yellow of yours! Great stuff :)

More than one and a half year later I finished some more! Here is my Viking warlord:

He does not come alone, but brings his retinue of berserkers too:

Superb work!

I recognize some of those Foundry vikings! Always nice to see them. And admirable free-handing on the shields as well. Nicely done! :)
-
Lovely stuff mate 8)

Love those bright shields! Well executed!

Thank you! Quite a few of them were formerly owned by you... ;)

And I started the new year painting Vikings too! Here they are - another band of warriors (1 point in Saga terms):

Excellent warband Michi.

I suspect that green could have been sold for the price of three ships in the dark ages. It certainly wasn't something anyone would have seen before!
-
...green... It certainly wasn't something anyone would have seen before!
Just curious, what is your basis for this statement?
Edit: Here is a study with citations saying that green was known. https://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikdyes.html
-
This was interesting, something I'd never considered - "The chemical evidence of textiles from several different sites seems to point to a preponderance of particular colors appearing in particular areas: reds in the Danelaw, purples in Ireland, and blues and greens in Scandinavia proper".
-
There are plenty of sites showing the colours you could get from pre-industrial revolution sources.
-
Various greens could be achieved by dying materials with common yellow dyes and over dying with woad or indigo
-
Interesting link, thanks for sharing. Also, note that trade was widespread during that time, so especially the elite troops could afford a wider range of colors than local available.
-
I live under the impression that particularly the Vikings were great traders as well as ruthless plunderers and loved to show their wealth to both their kin and everybody else. If any dark ages folk would have had access to anything I can image it would have been them. I will continue to clad them in bright and gaudy fabrics and give them vividly painted and ornamented shields... :D
-
Michi,
These are great looking Vikings!
I'd hate to run into them on a dark and stormy beach.
I love the hand painted shields, especially the monster face [dragon?] on the one third from the left in the photo below.

Vikings were the 'metros' of their time. Contrary to popular belief, they bathed more often than most Christians, generally favored bright and flashy clothes if they could afford them, and spent a lot of time on personal grooming (tiny spoons to clean out ear wax have been found in grave goods as well as combs, razors, tweezers, and more).
It was a way to display wealth and importance as well as considered good social form (offering a weary traveler a hot bath to wash the grime off was considered good form). Blonde hair, as an example, was more prevalent due to using lye to wash their hair and kill off lice. Not because they were all intrinsically platinum blonde.
At any rate, really excellent freehand work on the shields.
-
Great stuff Michi, love the hand painted shields also, particularly your monster.
Cheers
Matt

I love resurrecting my own old threads... :D
Therefore I painted more Vikings. This happens from time to time and one can never have enough variety to choose from for the composition of the best warband to deploy against a specific opponent. So like every good Viking chieftain I like to pick my warriors from plenty of the best to man my longboats!

Very nice 8)

Charming brushwork :-*
Who makes the miniatures with the Dane axes? They look very familiar but I cannot place them ???

I'm very sorry, but I can't put my finger on that too. They could be fantasy miniatures by Reaper or Hobby Products rather than Vikings. I bought them second hand from the bazaar. I simply assembled a couple of Vikings with axes in one group of 8 warriors (1 point value in Saga terms). The only one I'm aware of, is the Not-Ragnar Lothbrok by Brother Vinni.

Damn.... From the left it's no 1 and no 8 that I'm curious about ???

And for something completely different, here is another point of Saga Vikings:

Fantastic looking figures! Superb brushwork!

lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Some very lovely brushwork on display here :-*
-
knock-out - :-*
seems to be almost de rigueur for shields on LAF to be free-handed now ! Brilliant painting.
-
I love that red/white/blue striped shield, consider that idea nicked.
-
Beautiful shield work. Glorious colours all round.
-
These are just wonderfully colourful, I love them and your free hand shields - well wow!!
-
Looking good mate!

I painted a few more levies for my Saga Vikings. 12 men are worth one point in the army. These are armed with spears and shields instead of being archers like the other point of levies that I already had painted.

I tried to have the levies' clothes and shields less flashy than those of their wealthier comrades.

I love 'em.... Lovely smooth tonality :-*
Also, you cannot beat very well hand Painted shields!

Splendid painting. Bright and beautiful :-*

Like 'em especially the way you have done the wood on the spears...

Another addition to my Saga Viking warband, although there are some more miniatures lacking to make a full point. It will be quite a task to find matching comrades to complete that squad of heavy infantry.

Wonderful Viking collection. I have many, many Vikings in my future and will be coming back here for some inspiration.
