This is my second Star Wars project. The first was in 10mm and inspired by the Rogue One Scarif attack. This was stopped when I got contract to write a book about painting WW2 figures. The book took about 15 months to write from start to finishing handover to the publisher. Now that the book is at the layout stage, I want a change of subject. Star Wars Legion has recently been launched and the figures are very nice, so I have started a Star Wars project in 1/48 Scale. Star Wars Legion figures are about 35mm tall for a standard human.

Many years ago, back in 2011, I made an Afghan village for Force on Force from cigar boxes that I had been given. I decided to rework these as the basis for a Tatooine village such as Mos Eisley.

Here is a drone view of the table - 120cm (4ft) square to give you an idea of the plan.
The table will be about 120 cm square (4ft) but can be rearranged as 180cm x 90cm (6ft x 3ft).
I also want to use this project to experiment with new ideas such as 3D printed bits and MDF kits.
The houses are mostly cigar boxes that I was given many years ago.
These have added 3D printer greebles (doors, electrical bits, ventilators) from Corvus Games Terrain.
There are printed propaganda posters and this one will look like a mural when it is finished.
Most things are just attached with Blue-Tack at the moment.

New small 3D printed doors were specially made for me by Corvus Games Terrain. These are printed at 80% of their standard set.
The old buildings were made for 28mm so legion size doors were too big.
This tower contained a protein shake. The plastic dome came from a hobby shop.
The pipes are from Green Stuff World.
The buildings will be coated with wall filler (Polyfilla or spackle) and painted by stippling with shades of umber and sand colours.
There are several walls made from XPS foam (this is blue or pink in some countries).
This can be cut easily with a bread knife and a ruler.
Some parts will have brickwork showing through.

Here is a view of the whole thing from last weekend.
This weekend I started to add market stalls The left hand stall is plastic rod.
This was quite fiddly to get the frame to stay together at right angles while the Revell Contacta Glue set.
Right hand stall is XPS Foam with bamboo skewers. This was very quick and easy to build.
Both have paper canopies. The tubs, buckets, plates and jars are dolls house bits as is the Persian carpet.
There is still a lot to do. Everything has been built quickly and had a quick coat of paint but, after a few games, I will finish the textures and details.
Please comment and add suggestions.

Looks good so far :)
Docking bay 94 :D
-
I love those buildings. :-* :-*
Well done.
-
Very cool tabletop. I must admit I like the 10mm versions slightly more, but your posters are awesome!
-
Thank-you everybody.
@Jim - I would need a 1/48 scale Millenium Falcon to do that.
@ Divismal - if you Google Star Wars Propaganda Posters or Star Wars Travel Posters, you will find loads of good stuff.
-

There's a lovely 1/72 one :D

Do you mean the Revell Easy Kit?

I'm not sure if it's still available, but Hasbro usdd to do a 1:50 one. Pictures on my blog - http://zemjw.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/hasbro-millennium-falcon.html
It is a big beast. I've been looking at Star Wars buildings myself recently, and there are quite a few desert ones that look promising.
Your Mos Eisley is coming along nicely, looking forward to borrowing some ideas :D
-
Do you mean the Revell Easy Kit?
No, the Bandai one.
-
If this is the kit that you mean, at £300, it is rather out of my price range for scenery. It is very nice though.

I already have Millenium Falcon in 10mm (Action Fleet) and also in X-Wing scale (1/300?). The 10mm project is not dead, just dormant.
I will probably go for something else in Legion Scale such as an X-Wing or possibly the Hasbro U-Wing.
-
You could still do 94 without the Falcon :)
-
I have a vague idea to use my existing 10mm figures and X wing ships to do higher level combat and then switch to Legion for resolving the infantry combat. I would possibly modify Rapid Fire for the 10mm battles.
This would mean that I could combine huge attacks involving several X-Wings, Tie fighters and AT-ATs at 10mm scale and then these act like off table artillery & airstrikes in Legion.

Sounds like a good idea :)

I have just ordered these 3D printed droids. This will be my first 3D printed figures.

You also have the following:

I was very tempted by the alien heads - they are from the same designer.
If the droids are nice quality when they arrive I will probably also buy the heads.
-
I have the heads and they are great.
Perfect fo SW Legion.
-
These are the droids you are looking for.
One year ago, I wrote that good quality 3D printing was too expensive to be used for wargames figures. Here is my latest purchase - a set of Star Wars droids.
These arrived today and have had a simple black wash with Citadel Nuln OIl. I have not done any sanding or filing, nor removed any sprue bits yet.

-
So you are happy with your purchase?
-
Yes. I am very happy. Scale is perfect. Detail matches the best miniatures brands. Very little clean up is needed. They are expensive compared to standard war games figures but actually cheap compared to Games Workshop, FFG or Hasslefree character figures.
-
Wow. Those droids are pretty cool. In fact, these may be the droids I have been looking for! :D
-
Indeed, they look great. Thank you Mick for posting pictures!
I wonder if Mel could be persuaded to make a version in WEG 25mm scale.
-
They look very good indeed
-
@Yoda
I recently bought some doors from Corvus Games Terrain (see page 1).
The first set were too large for my existing buildings so I asked them to print me six doors at 80% (I also gave them dimensions).
This was no problem to do and also cheaper than the first set.
I had them within a week.
I am not sure how this works on Shapeways but If you can contact Mel, I am sure that he will be able to shrink the files.

Hmm....if 25mm is possible, maybe 15/18mm is also an option...don't tempt me, dark side!

Here are the droids with some paint.
I tried to black line them using powders from the Revell Weathering Set. This was partly successful.
I tried again with a pin wash made from Payne's Grey artists oil paint and odourless mineral spirits.

Here is the latest addition - an MDF Imperial Bunker for Endor.
https://www.multiversegamingterrain.com/imperial-bunker-p-251.html (https://www.multiversegamingterrain.com/imperial-bunker-p-251.html)
At Euro 25 this is very good value.
The building was built according to the instructions. I did not like the roof machinery in the kit so I decided to make my own. I used photocopy paper to line the walls to hide the construction tabs.
Here it is assembled and roughly painted. I still have not decided whether the domes will be made from a Prosecco cork (left) or a measuring spoon (right).
Still more painting and weathering to do
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/934/28803741647_7fc115d206_o.jpg)

Now with weathering and rust.
I am still looking for a better solution to the roof domes.
The one on the right is made from a fruit shoot drink bottle top that I got in England.
Unfortunately I only have the one. I need to find something similar.

I decided to rebase the figures.
The bases are 25mm diameter and 2mm thick. The brass pin is 1.2mm. I drilled an exactly 1.2mm hole in the base and the leg. No glue involved. I will matt varnish the edge to reduce the shine.
I did try some with superglue and no pin. These were very delicate if dropped or banged and broke frequently. After repair, you can see the glue splodges and that looks untidy.
Also - drill by hand using a pin chuck and not a Dremel. Slow and accurate is the way to go, especially on the figure.
EDIT - I am now working my way through about 60 figures and droids. I start with the pin chuck and then drill with the Dremel. This is a bit quicker.

Nice.
Have you thought about using gloss varnish as an adhesive? It is very popular in the model railway world to fix name plates and handrails (the latter combined with friction fit holes like your pins).
-
Ultravanillasmurf
The tight fit appears to be enough. I don't think I will need glue or varnish.
However, I do like the idea and will try it sometime.

Todays progress with transparent bases.

I ran out of bases so ordered some more from https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50-Laser-Cut-2-3-or-5mm-Clear-Acrylic-Circles-Discs-War-Games-Workshop-Bases/122026378459?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=422573691233&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50-Laser-Cut-2-3-or-5mm-Clear-Acrylic-Circles-Discs-War-Games-Workshop-Bases/122026378459?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=422573691233&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649)

I have not painted anything for ages. Too much going on in real life.
However, this week, I have painted some Shore Troopers and that was fun.

Indeed. Lovely miniatures. :-* :-* :-*
-
Very nice indeed
-
Excellent work on both the scenery and mini's.
-
Thank-you everybody

I am not sure if this is finished or still WIP. It is a Star Wars Legion AT-ST and I am trying to get it to look like a well worn machine in active service in a warzone rather than a dilapidated wreck.
What do you think? How can I improve it.
EDIT - I have just found out that the shields on the upper leg should be facing down, because I have the parts on the wrong sides, so I have changed them but I will have to rework the weathering so that it looks ok.

Very nice. Weathered but not overdone. I have a difficult time stopping at the rifht time with weathering

Looks good 8)
Some blaster scoring would help.

Thanks
I am not sure how to do blaster scoring. I will have to try it on a scrap piece first.
