Title: [Portuguese in India] Goa 1510 WIP (Update August 2021)
Post by: Byblos on June 19, 2018, 05:47:22 PM
Hi !

The beginning of my Goa , circa 1510 , at the time of the arrival of Afonso de Albuquerque

It's a very fascinating project for me , but it will take years to complete !

(These buildings are 10 per cent of the total of fortifications i will build , and a fort (Panaji) and a fortified ford (Pas de Banastri) and the city of Goa with 4 meters of walls (6 towers , 3 fortified gates and 2 great towers) some houses , the port with a redoubt , the Adil Shâh Palace , a Mosquee , and barracks for troups , horses and elephants , and out of the city some rural houses , a Hindouist temple in ruins (Ganesh dedicated) and some ships !)

But the number of minies will be relatively not hight (The Portuguese are not numerous)

It' a very complex and rich project , i will give you some details later !

Note that these buildings are not finished , i have to coat them with air dying clay , sand down and of course paint them !

Good start, you are not frightened to take on something big that's for sure!   :o Is this 28mm?

Yes 28mm : the minie is a Gripping Beast Timurid (Excellent range , i will use them , and others ranges and minies makers , for Muslim Indians)

Well, I guess I can give you a nearly unique wow.  I just posted some photos in my Tartar Wall thread on the colonial page here on LAF - it is a full 12' long but in 15 mm and not nearly so elaborate as yours.  So, I can really appreciate how arduous an undertaking you've set out upon.  Well done.  I shall peak in from time to time.

What range(s) are you planning to use for the Portuguese ?  The date is still a little early for morions (most helmets would be examples of sallets or kettle hats).

Exact but i have no really choice : Foundry Conquistadores , Eureka Portuguese (and some spanish).

For the Foundry it seems OK they have no morions , for the Eureka Portuguese a lot have hats or are bareheads others have morion , i thinks i will not use those with morions , or change the heads ...

Foundry Conquistadors a good choice for Portuguese, as they are really intended for the earliest phase of the conquest and fit in well for 1510.  Eureka Portugeuse without morion should work (if you stay away from any with trunk hose).  Another possible option are some of the TAG Spanish/Neapolitan troops (which are for the earliest phase of the Italian Wars) :

Yes , but you know the Portuguese in the early days of their India settlement were in low numbers , so the Foundry & the Eureka will be sufficient  ;)

And it will cost me less money ! Even a so small amount of troops cost a lot  lol

Just some options.  The Foundry Conquistadors are just fine.

Hi !

Goa belongs originally to the Bahmani sultanate , it's a Muslim city (The original hindou city was destroyed) so the troops are mainly Muslim troops , with a lot of mercenary (Turks , Persians ...) that the Portuguses called "White Turks"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahmani_Sultanate

But i need troops differents from the usual "Muslim Conquest / Moors / Saracens" and it was difficult to find them !

After a lot of research , i found that my Gripping Beast Timurids (I owned and began to paint sopme of them before) are really intersting for that !

I found that the Black Tree Design saracens are more armored and more "eastern" than the other existing Saracen range so i bought some of them , even in their Fantasy Saracen range ( Some of their command make perfect Turco-mongols !)

I have 6 armored saracen bowmen from FireForge : they are perfect but seems to be a pain to built  :(

And for some native troops i will use Foundry hindus and maybe Old Glory Ancient Indians bowmen

Then the Bahmani Sultanate Army will be , as in history , a "melting pot" army , with some conversions to make artillery men too , a very intersting army to build and paint !

I will make a description of the project but the problem is my english language   :? (I'm not fluent enought) : i have to work on it !

I've bought some of these Baluchis , i will maybe use them as Nayars , a warriors cast of Malabar (South West coasts of India) !

If you have the chance check the frostgrave bodies of the cultists and heads from Gripping Beast arabs.
Might work for some more muslim troops.

I wondered if you could make use of the GB Timurids. For a while I was buying up Indus miniatures as I wanted a late 16thC/early 17thC Mughal force and GB's Timurids were a little early- right in the zone for your project though. Some of the Indus minis, especially the Hindu militia and cavalry might be good for your native force: link. (http://indusminiatures.mybigcommerce.com/categories/WAR-IN-INDIA-%252d-28mm/)

Hi Cod !

For Muslim indians circa 1510 the GB Timurids are good , the Indus miniatures (very pretty minies) are too late i think !

But the Hindu militia bowmen could be very interesting , and maybe the elephants and moreover the crew !

I will consider buying some of these !

For the light hindu cavalry , i could buy some Foundry , and for civilians too ...

Yeah, most of their minis are about 200 years out of date for your project but the Pindari cavalry is generic enough that they might work as well.

Yes , very interesting for the Nayars !

Note that Genevieve Bouchon a French specialist , wrote that in wartimes , Nayars had long hairs & beards , and wears "silk" jackets ...

Thats why i think about Foundry Baluchis ...

But the Hindu militia swordmen from Indus Miniatures could be OK too i think ...

The next step for the Adil Shâh palace

I think i will make two version of the roof top : one with a dome (for purely muslim city) and one with shingles (for Persia or India)

I will make a little garden in one portion of the inner court , with a basin , a fountain , some palm trees ...

I could use these building for WW1 / RCW in Mesopotamia / Persia / Turkestan too (Ex: DunsterForce)

1) Enjoyment 2)Diorama & 3)Gaming , this is the hierarchic order  ;)

But the gaming why not !? I think about using "Irregular Wars" rules !

If someone could advice me on a rule for big skirmish game during 16 or 17th century, i 'm interested !

Hi !

The work on the mosque continues slowly but surely (it is a complex building that takes time) and during that time I started the Fortress of Panaji.

I base the project on Surat Fort, built in the 14th century by a Mamluk sultan in northern India.

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0013.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2819)

I will make a basic revival, and I will provide some options to extend its use until the eighteenth century.

To be continued  ;)

Hi !

For the moment I spent some time on my Sengoku Jidaï project! (I have done a lot of historical research, and I am working on a campaign system) But gradually during the month of September, I will be sharing my time devoted to the hobby between Sengoku Jidaï and the Portuguese in India!

No worries, it's a subject that fascinates me! I will go to the end, but it will take time!

I will also begin to paint some figurines: the decorations I like a lot, but there must also be figurines!

By cons I would still receive my orders Black Tree Design: it's depressing to wait for months!

For the buildings I spotted very beautiful windows crafted at Shifting lands!

thank you for following me in any case, it's nice (really!)

In short, as who would say: to be continued  ;)

Title: Re: [Portuguese in India] Goa 1510 WIP (Upd February 16th)
Post by: Byblos on October 10, 2019, 01:46:40 PM
Hi all !

The following !

Maybe not very spectacular, but real!

First, I was brought to my attention a brand called "Shifting lands" which produces including MDF windows, and among the proposed models, some particularly interested me because very Eastern / Indian!

So I took my tools, and continued the mosque and the palace of the Adil Shah, adding these beautiful windows!

I took the opportunity to improve the interior, because I think it would be interesting in the future game system to introduce a notion of "role playing" (remember the number of troops will not be huge, especially on the Portuguese side) and "booty", so to offer the possibility to the troops to enter the buildings to make there booty, quantity and quality of the booty will enter the count of the points of victory!

So there is the mosque (with the big prayer room, the vestibule, the medresa ...) and the palace of Adil Shah with the guard room, the harem, the big room with its 2 alcoves .. .

I would realize a simple furniture but I hope that will make good, with benches, utensils, cushions, carpets ...

On the mosque there is still a lot of work: the tower / minaret and the roof, and in the big prayer hall the Minbar and the Mihrab, and the big oil lamps!

For the palace of the Adil shah: the court!

Then it will be plastering, sanding, interior design and painting!

(There is a problem: I am not very good at painting buildings: but I have at least time to take advice and improve myself: it is by forging that you become a blacksmith !!! )

And then: the houses, fortified towers and entrances, the stables, and we will end with the walls that will serve as variables of adjustment in terms of the dimensions of the whole!

And of course, it will not be over yet: a job but on the one hand I take my foot and on the other hand, I hope that the result will be both spectacular and exciting!

In short: to be continued  ;)

It goes like this : after pretending to praise him in English, I thoroughly insulted him in a foreign language, cursed him, belittled his manhood and smeared his family's good name over at least ten generations.

All in five words : that's how good I am  :D

What an amazing project. Your buildings are truly works of art!

May I ask what are the round towers made of and how do you get the clay stick to it?

Hello !

the tower is made of cardboard: I draw vertical lines of 1 cm wide, then I cut the first layer of cardboard with the cutter and partly the foam (I leave the second layer of cardboard intact) that allows me thus forming a cylinder, the length of the sheet of cardboard defines the diameter of the cylinder.

I then use hardening modeling clay to cover everything, that I wet slightly what makes it sticky and can better shape it!

Thank you all for your encouragements !

(Even Arthur who has cursed my name for 10 generations! It's not beautiful jealousy!  :D )

Hi Byblos,

When you say "cutter" do you have a special tool you use other than a sharp knife?

I'm thinking specifically for curves etc.

To simply cut a thin layer of cardboard, a basic cutter is enough, on the other hand when I have to cut a thickness of cardboard, or in a relatively thick cardboard (1 mm) cut more complex elements like a window with X panels, there I use a cutter of model, with us it is called a scalpel, and as a rule new blade!

Right, so a scalpel or modelling knife.

I thought you might have some kind of special tool to cut curves.

I'm sure that I have seen such a device but I'm not at all sure. I might be thinking of a drawing device?

Or I might have dreamt it!!  lol lol

So for this house we have, on the ground floor: a hallway, which is also the kitchen and the room where the servants work (the floor is made of clay and there will be an oven) and a large room for the masters (the ground will be raised and in wood planking). There is a door to the street and another to the courtyard. The upper floor is composed of a vestibule, a small private living room (with moucharabieh) and a bedroom which will be separated by a wooden partition. the bedroom opens onto a balcony. The vestibule overlooks a staircase which descends into the courtyard. the courtyard opens onto a small enclosed garden (there will be 2 trees and flowers) which overlooks the market square, opposite the mosque and near the Pas de Banastri Gate. The trick is that the servants go through the entrance overlooking the main street while the distinguished visitors and the masters go through the garden and access directly to the masters' apartments via the staircase from the courtyard.

I still have to arrange the courtyard and the garden, as well as the painting and the accessorization of course.

I revised the plan of Goa by enlarging the surface of the city a little: I thus pass from 3 "blocks" of dwellings to 6. This house of merchant constitutes a block in itself. There will be in the North the main street (of the palace) which also gives on the River gate and the Port gate, in the West the garden will open on the Market Place and the Mosquee, in the East will be joined a 2nd merchant house which will be smaller and will have the distinction of having a warehouse on the ground floor which will have 2 doors: one in the North (will open on the River gate and the Port gate) and one in the South which will open on an alley behind these 2 merchant houses which will provide access to the Adil Shah palace via a postern that visitors and goods can discreetly borrow. This alley will be overlooked by the keep flanking the Pas de Banastri gate.

(I will put a plan to you later).

There will be 4 other blocks of dwellings: a shopping street (with 2 or 3 shops and small dwellings), 2 blocks of dwellings and a block that will have the distinction of being attached to the 2nd keep of the city (which will flank the Port gate) and will have a business and a home that will be "one" with the keep.

There will undoubtedly be a division into districts and "Quarter's doors".

There will of course also be the Palace of Adil Shah (already well advanced) and stables (for horses and elephants). The Port gate will open onto a commercial port / shipyard protected on the river side by a redoubt and artillery, and barracks will be built against the wall. In the South, I plan to make a suburb along the wall.

To be continued ...

What an amazing set of buildings - such elegant and clean builds. They hardly need painting (well apart from the calendar floors...)

You mention Irregular Wars as possible rules, and while I am a big fan of these rules they are really for small battles using mutlibased figures - I'm not sure they would really work great in such a complex urban environment. I'm envisaging some rules which allow heroic characters to run around (and up) the buildings fighting each other, rather than a unit based combat system.

Haven't checked in for a while - and I missed a thing or two, I did.  Superlatives fail here.  Though I must say you will need some proper figures for your 'booty call' portion of your games - hope someone makes appropriate figures, a nautch party seems quite appropriate given the setting.  That palace - and those fantastic balusters - and the fine window 'lacing' are truly startling to see in such a model.

One essential question, are you waiting to paint all the buildings in one go?  Really look forward to seeing these buildings when painted.

And now the less essential but perhaps insanity inducing question - any plans to do the Taj Mahal?  (and, yes, I know it is not in Goa for those who are going to try and spoil my fun!)  If there is modeler who can pull it off, I nominate Byblos for the head of the class!

Hi !

The rules problem is indeed a thorny problem, and I haven't solved it yet!

Nevertheless I make a few remarks:

- I would also like to be able to use these figurines, especially Bijapur's troops, to form a Mughal or Moorish Indian or even Hindu army, so I will prefer the multibased system!

- I make sure that the width of the streets, and the interiors of the buildings allow at least to place a base of 5X5 cm inside (and even 6 X 6 cm)

In short, I would really like to be able to keep a base system with several miniatures with a dimension of 5 or 6 cm per side.

What I appreciated in Irregular Wars is that it is a simple system but not simplistic.

It uses an event card system to modify the basic conditions of the scenario played, I will keep this system so that even during the game, events occur and modify the conditions of combat.

The one base = one unit system can prove to be very useful in this context of siege and urban combat because it allows the organization of the army to be better articulated, it introduces more flexibility.

And on a large classic table (2.4 mx 1.8 m) you can place up to 3 commandments for each protagonist: as the Portuguese will be few (I table on a large hundred figs divided into 3 commandments)

3 commands, this will allow me to propose 3 command bases per army, which will give great importance to at least 3 "heroes".

For Bijapur troops I would need between 400 and ... 2000 miniatures! It will be difficult so I imagined 2 things:

1 °) The Hindu archers are very numerous, but totally ineffective in melee, so I will not materialize them on the table, they will simply provide support in the form of dice rolls in ranged combat. Once the melee troops of their command destroyed or on the run, these archers will also be automatically eliminated (they flee or are massacred).

and 2 °) I will use an assault wave system! So, instead of having to buy / paint / put on my shelves between 400 and 2000 miniatures, I would have, let's say, only 200! The waves of assault will follow one another: once a command is eliminated, it can return to the table again (unlike the Portuguese who will permanently lose the eliminated units)!

Am I not great !?  lol

There is still a lot of work for the project to take shape, and I would also like to imagine a campaign system. In 2020, I will notably dissect my documentation, and I hope to even draw a small booklet from all this research!

In short, to be continued!

Hi !

No I'm not going to paint them all once, that would be too much work! And I'm going to start painting work this year, especially since I still don't know how to proceed with the colors used, I'm reflecting on all of this ...

For the Taj mahal no it is not planned: my project does not take place in this region, nor at the same time! It is already a sufficiently complex project requiring a lot of work so I will "limit myself" to what I would really use in this context: the Portuguese in Kerala and the Bijapur coasts between 1500 and 1515.

On the other hand, in addition to the miniatures and the buildings, it will also be necessary to count with many elements of ground, and ships (One or 2 carracks, 1 or 2 caravels, smaller ships, but also Sambouks and other local ships!) .

And for the miniatures: there are of course infantrymen, a little (not much) cavalry, command bases / heroes, elephants, artillery!

Regarding the buildings, there will be Goa but also at least one farm, the fortress of Panaji (with optional elements allowing it to be used until the 18th century), the fortified watchtower of Banastri ... And, why no, we can even imagine later that I could model the fighting in Kerala (this time in a Hindu context and not Moorish from India) and let's be crazy: the taking of Malacca (the city of Malacca, junks , etc ...)

And I would love to put together a campaign system!

This project, in addition to its exoticism and originality, is also typical of drawer projects: it is a large cabinet with drawers, and there are plenty of drawers to open: one is Bijapur, the other Kerala, another still Malacca, and yet another Hormuz, and I'm not even talking about the city states of East Africa!

I will surely dedicate the 30 or 40 years of life that I should have to it !!

Anyway ... to be continued

These stables can accommodate elephants (used for pack and war) and horses.

Goa was one of the 2 ports of Bijapur which received Persian and Arabian horses (With Chaul).

Horses acclimatized poorly in India, and they had to be imported regularly in large quantities. their wounds did not heal, and they could not reproduce ...

Horses could be traded ... several hundred gold coins one !!!

It was a capital market: Albuquerque was not mistaken in seizing Goa, the Portuguese subsequently continued to supply horses to both the Hindus of Vijayanagar and the Muslims of the Deccan!

The Mosque: Continuation & end (There will still be the interior design to be done)

This mosque is a mixture of architectural elements from Gujarat (Main body and tower) and Deccan (Minaret and dome, with floral motifs carved in stone).

The mosques in these regions are of Indo-Persian architecture (The mosques of Kerala, of which I will make a copy later, are very different, of architecture very specific to Kerala).

In the main body there will be the large prayer hall (with Mirhab - Alcove showing the direction of Mecca - and Minbar - preacher's pulpit), a small medrésé (Koranic school) and a small storage room. the tower will contain the preacher's bedroom and a storage room.

The minaret is purely decorative (the muezzin launches the call to prayer from the tower).

The mosque will be located on an esplanade, and on the side there will be a small basin for ablutions ...

Door and porticos:

A door, of the Central Asian type (it will be perfect for my future Samarkand, I could use it as well for my Timurids as for the DunsterForce in 1918!) But usable in India, and porticoes, always welcome everywhere from the Middle East to India ...

I would also make a square portico that I would use as a forge building on the port of Goa ...

The porticoes accommodate in particular merchants, money changers, etc ...

The roofs are removable ...

Well, I know, the Portuguese said that at the time the walls of Goa were low and poorly maintained BUT that is no reason to represent them as walls of dried dung!

So, I resumed work on the walls by expanding the architecture a little!

Please note this is work in progress, it is not finished, and therefore not the final appearance which will be less crude!

And I also started to work on "coastal" modules which can also be rearranged in river ...
