Title: Dreadnought/ Sci-Fi Walker (manufacturer unknown )
Post by: tin shed gamer on June 20, 2018, 12:36:39 AM
While I've been thread happy posting away merrily. I thought I might as well see if anymore can identify this ignoring the 40k tweaking it got decades ago.

It's white metal a very heavy and simply cannot support its own weight. It lives in the cupboard with piece of balsawood supporting it. If I left it out it would bend over and touch the base by morning.

In fact you can see how much its started to drop between photographs.

Nexus Raven Strider from the Kryomek range. Got two of those myself.

Those legs are indeed woefully inadequate. I've long pondered replacing them with brass tubing, but never got around to do so. The resin pieces, if a bit smelly back in the day with all that entails, are much better.

Thanks Chris,
I've a bag full of figures I bought roughly around the same time All bald heads, vest, and baggy cargo pants .I wonder if they're the same . I do remember how smelly that resin was especially when you sanded it.

Do they have a little ridge on top of their heads, with a lens-thingie on the forehead? Then they are probably the penal troops from the same game (I forget the correct name right now). Got a bunch painted up as Genetic Infantry and some for Strontium Dog - those sculpts are extremely 2000AD-compatible, if a little bit daft in their poses.

Awful stuff that resin. I got a couple of their bunkers when I first started out in wargaming back in 1995. Hoo boy. Let it air for weeks, always wet-sanded, used multiple heavy-duty primers on it - today, it is okay. I recently got some more of the bunkers and those were much, much better - must have switched materials sometime.

Yep.
They certainly do. I think they ended up in the lead pile because I never had time to make them fit the bases I had.
Are they still on the go? As I spend most of my time sculpting I've not really had the time to even think about a sci-fi project let alone look at sci-fi manufacturers.

Scotia Grendel still sells most of the Kryomek scenery and miniatures. The above are indeed their penal troopers, named "Cyclos Infantry":

That wide-legged stance has been a constant source of irritation to me, too. Mind that most of the vehicles and scenery are very much on the small side, and more suited to true 25mm figures (or smaller) than the heroic 28s that are the Kryomek troops - I've got a load of the Nexus SWAT for Fallout as Enclave troopers, and those, while a bit lanky, are still decent items. The bunkers are tiny, though. The larger not-AT/ST walkers would be good to go, though.

Now I remember the resin walkers I'm sure I had a couple once upon a time.

I made this for Graven Images, round about the same time.
So I gave the other one's away.

Hey! I've got that Graven Images walker too. You mean you sculpted it or you built and painted this one?
Very nice like this, with crew.

I don't think pictures of swastikas are allowed (due to the forum being based on German servers) so you might want to edit the picture?

I could have sworn it had transferred servers when it changed hands. But just in case image tweaked. ;)

No longer necessary. UK servers and all.

Although I have to fight the reflex all the time, too.  lol

Wow, that Nazi one is very good indeed, (I dont like gun hand, I would prefer something more german but the claw hand is perfect).

You can't really see from the angle but its as German as you can get.
There was originally a backpack exhaust inspired by the tiger 1's deck plate tubes and all. This was badly damaged during moulding. For reasons unknown they decided that they'd ignore the fact the master was designed for resin casting and cast in metal so it's miracle its cast at all. Ironically there were two additional drone robots to go with them, that Went off (After Jim died) to Wayland games in Gateshead that suffered exactly the same fate.
The German walker was intended to be in three variants ,Two claw hands,or two gun arms, and a combination of both.I only ever received the one casting of both the British and the German walkers. :?

Great stuff! I remember Jim sold me one of last ones he had left. I recall he wrote me very few were actually cast, just for friends i.i.r.c.

You did well to get one. I don't how many were cast but I suspect less than a dozen.
I never got the other ones that were part of the deal.( three more so I could have had all the variants planned.2 British, and 3 German) so I never made the others.
I've toyed with the idea of re sculpting them.So many walkers have been released in the last ten years  ,It alway felt that revising them, was a waste of time .  I had the drop on theses company's by nearly five years and the whole thing got shelved. Now it'd look like I'm hanging on their coattails

But I've also made this one for Dragon bait.(sort of a sculpting great grandson of the British walker.)
