Over the last couple of weeks I have been busy painting up some of the excellent Red Book of the Elf King miniatures.
So far I have painted up one of each of the six packs of Elf Companions and three heroes. Sally 4th are the official show stockists for Lucid Eye, so we have been making a demo board and painting demo armies so that we can have them on show on our stand at shows. The next couple we are going to are Claymore on 4th August and The Other Partizan on 19th August so if you're at either show do come over and have a look and a chat.

If you have not seen Red Book of the Elf King, it is the new set of rules written by Rick Priestly, you can check it out @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/The-Red-Book-of-The-Elf-King (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/The-Red-Book-of-The-Elf-King)

We only finished the board last night, so I just took a snap on my phone on the way to work this morning!
I'll take some proper photos over next couple of days and update the thread.

yes, fabulous board. Your terra-forming system is excellent.

Really brilliant terrain!

Do those trees have their own bases, but fit into pre-placed divots in the terrain board? Looks like a brilliant system, and a way to better store the boards when not in service. And re-use the trees on future boards. Without the trees' bases looking like they are hovering over the underlying terrain.

Great stuff!

Some lovely work there - thanks for sharing.

Yes, the trees are mounted on 40mm round bases. We then set a ring with a 40mm diameter internal hole into the terrain, plaster up over the ring which leaves a recess to drop trees into so that they are flush with terrain, but can be removed for storage. We can also swap out the pine trees for a deciduous forest or even jungle trees, increasing versatility of the boards.

OK, took some more photos last night, and Thursday night I have a game scheduled in the evening with Doug so I've decided to add a page to my Hobby Blog to collect together photos of terrain, miniatures and games.

Last night we got to try the terrain boards out!
First trial game of Red Book of the Elf King.

I'm glad to be able to report that the game played very smoothly. I was a little concerned that there would not be enough in the game (other than the back story off course) to make it unique, but I need not have worried.

We really liked the activation system, interplay of magic and combat and the way that casualties interacted with activation to show units hesitating and being harder to activate once exhausted.

If added a stack of new photos together with a description of some of the key mechanisms we used last night to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Red-Book-of-the-Elf-King (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Red-Book-of-the-Elf-King)

On Wednesday evening, Doug and I played our first game of Red Book of the Elf King with complete seven unit armies, i.e Thane plus six groups of three companions.

We played the second scenario in the Red Book of the Elf King rulebook. Both sides deployed on to the table with the intent of destroying the opposing Thane. If neither side achieved this victory went to the side that had caused the most casualties.

Dougs force was based around Meksant Farseer so was very magical, my force was based on Vachel Goldenhand so was based on close combat ability.

We had an exciting game, victory was in the balance right up to the last activation of the last turn.

I've added a right up of the game with lots of photos and descriptions of rule mechanics to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Red-Book-of-the-Elf-King (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Red-Book-of-the-Elf-King)

Doug and I had another great game of Red Book of the Elf King last night. In preparation for our participation game at The Other Partizan we tried out a 4 Faction game which worked very well. Photos to follow shortly, in the mean time we are going to be at Claymore on Saturday 4th August. As we are the official Lucid Eye show stockist we will have the complete range of Red Book of the Elf King, Savage Core, Plot Device etc with us together with custom terrain demo table. If you are at the show, do come and say hello.

I’m enjoying reading your battle reports - thanks for posting! I agree that the system is quick to learn, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

Hi James, glad you like it. I agree completely. The rules are very quick and easy to pick up, learn and explain but have a lot of depth to them. The interactions of activation's,  powers and magic use are very subtle, and some of the best magic is not necessarily the type that goes bang!

Last Saturday we ran a participation game at Claymore Wargames show in Edinburgh.

The scenario we played involved four thanes. None of the players had played before (or heard of Red Book of the Elf King / Lucid Eye) before we started. Within 20 minutes every one had a good grasp of the basic rule mechanisms.

The battle was won by Salian Trollblood, who was the last thane standing. Everyone had a great time and the game ran fast and smooth and was really good fun.

If you'd like some more details, I've added a report with loads more photos to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Red-Book-of-the-Elf-King-at-Claymore-2018 (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Red-Book-of-the-Elf-King-at-Claymore-2018)

The battlefield has changed from the mountains to the farmland but the action was just as exciting as ever.

On Monday evening Doug and I had another game of Red Book of the Elf King.

All of our games up until then had been up by the cliffs and waterfall in the high mountain passes.

We will be running participation games through out the day, so if you are at the show, please drop by and roll some dice, or at least say hello!

Here at Sally 4th, we are just getting packed up ready to head off to 'The Other Partizan' at the weekend with our Red Book of the Elf King Participation game and all of our Lucid Eye, Sally 4th, Pulp Alley, Otherworld Miniatures, Sloppy Jalopy, Statuesque Miniatures and all the other stuff we take with us. At our last game (on Monday), Doug suggested it would be great to have a free gift for folks who came along and joined in, so I've designed a handy little range ruler that has the measurements you use in Red Book of the Elf King. We are not going to sell it, but we will give one away for free to everyone who joins in with a participation game or buys a copy of the game from us.
