Okay here we go...
Recently for fun I accepted the challenge to make an armoured train (amongst others). From the usual limited list of basic every day items.
For this challenge it's cereal packet card ,cocktail sticks, and very little else.
Now the deal was add some pictures of the train you'd like to see and I'll take a crack it.. Due to the butterfly nature of the hobby. The images haven't appeared. As I'm a man of my word . I'm ready to start this project on Monday evening. So I've two options either make one up as I go. Or ask you chaps to post some picture of a period train you'd like to have a crack at (challenge was for a tutorial) .
Any ideas?

Hi !
I love this one :

It's an Bolchevik AT on the Finland front, captured by the Finns, and used later by the Germans
-
That's a nice change from the usual boxy Soviet ones.
-
Indeed, I really like it!
-
Byblos,
Nice choice( surprised you've not built one yourself.)
It's a lot less complicated than it looks. So a tutorial isn't going to cause people to throw things at walls if they try it. In fact looking at the photographs. I don't actually see the need to even make wheels for a table top version.
Only issue I have is the line drawing as it contradicts the photographs . Do you know of any better pictures of the engine and tender? As the line drawing seems to be of a completely different one.

i will make this one later ;)
But sorry no more pictures about this AT or his engine :?
-
A quick google search popped up this one for me, I think its the same?

Yes it's another point of view from the first picture i think

I thought that as well at first, but the fence at the top of the embarkment seems to be missing? It might just be hidden due to a trick of perspective. In any case, more pictures!
-
It took less than five minutes. Of half bothered hang over searching. ;D
Between this one,and the one's already posted . There's enough info for an educated guess/ bluffing.
If your intent on build this train(Byblos) then I'll happily build another one. I've no actual preference as to which style of train I make. Or are you just after me doing all the leg work,so you can avoid the pit falls. lol
I'm quite happy to build this one,if that's of interest to anyone.
Mark.
-
You could built this one Mark !
That could be very interesting , and i will follow this work with pleasure :)
-
I'll start tomorrow :D
But don't be expecting too much. As I've Stav training tomorrow evening.( likely to get my arse handed to me by the nordic ninjas. But that's why her majesty insisted I learn to shoot straight lol)
-
Hi Mark , excuse me but : what is Stav !?
-
that last one does show the engine a lot better, I'm quite curious to see what you come up with mate!
-
YPU.
I was rather hoping for an armoured train model lol
Byblos,
It's a European martial art in the Norwegian tradition. (spear ,staff, axe and knife. The first two I truly suck at lol but the close quarter I can hold my own with.)
-
Thanks Mark ;)

YPU.

That's what they all say, but before you know it you are declaring yourself king of the railroad kingdom of new Shangri La out god knows where!
-
I'll pop a quick up date picture over the next couple of days. As I've decided its more time friendly to build and photograph the whole thing before I post a tutorial rather than a 'WIP' tutorial .
Mark.
-
"Editing"? What sort of rot is that?! lol
-
Just for you Fram, lol
-
lol
Already on a roll (with mustard), I see...
-
Wow ! Very interesting beginning !
-
Slightly more than a beginning. The engine is undercoated, and I'm building these in tandom.
As usual it's twenty four hours maximum. I'm roughly eight hours in.
-
Cracking! 😁
-
One last teaser, then its nose to the grindstone until after Partizan.
Detailing bits ,and wheel bead to be added at this stage in the picture. But this is pretty much the boring part of the train done.
Mark.
(forgot to mention it's finished :D)
-
Wow! Love it! :-* :-*
-
:-* :-* :-*
-
I'm chuffed. lol
-
Still can’t get over what you can do with just card! :o :o :o
-
Bloody hell TSG, is that really card? Astonishing!
-
lol
Yes it is, There's an idea's/challenge thread over on the workbench. With other bits of cereal packet silliness(if you haven't come across the builds before)
Plus there's also a list of challenge builds to see me through till Christmas. Which includes the armoured train.
Andy, and Fram have volunteered a couple of ideas, and I'm an idiot so ....
-
Oh great, what did I do now? lol
-
TSG
Yes I know this is an old thread ?
But not quite dead ?
Did you ever finish any wagons for your excellent train ?
regards Paul
-
Paul
I did finish it around the middle of October . Then got sidetracked with an mdf church. Its finished off being too long to photograph in the light box . I'll be posting pictures later in the year as I'm going to use one of the wagons for a Home guard themed game. As a railway coastal battery( unless I find the time to make a more authentic one or the civillian train I've been promising for years.)
There is a 'tales from the tin shed' thread over on the workbench that covers the build upto the undercoating of the first gun carriage/car (since they're both more or less the same it should give you an idea.) Ended some time in September I think. As the idea for the Home front stuff took off.
But I will take some pictures once its warm enough to set it up outside.
Mark.
-
TSG
Thanks for taking the time to answer , I will hot foot it over to the other thread.
regards Paul
-
lol well it's warm enough today. So here it is.
Although I've still static grass and texture to add to the brambles.
Mark.
-
Hooooo nice :-*
-
Came out quite well. Now you're going to have to eat more cereal so you can build additional rolling stock. :D
-
Lovely little scene :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
A lot of nice work,I take it, it is all your own stuff?
-
The wait was worth it :-* :-* :-*
-
Absolutely bloody-marvelous, sheer cereal cardy genius :-*
-
That's when the Tin Shed oeuvre gets truly impressive, when you look upon an entire table of scenery knowing it's pretty much all made from cereal packet card.
-
Sorry it took so long to update.
Yes its all me , with the minor exception being that the warehouse/factory started life as a knackered second hand Metcalfe HO card building thats been tweaked and rescaled to 28mm. It was an exercise in scale compression.
As its possible to get five rows rescaled card terraced houses for the price of one mdf row of three house's( £5.99 per row in HO card and £30+ for a 28mm mdf row.)
The track is card on a piece of wood. The traction engine is cereal packet as is the pawn brokers.
The railway station (not finished is completely card too.)
Will take it upto 1.3m of track which is enough for my immediate needs.
The rest of the town/ village is made and in various stages of paint. So by summer it should be ready for a full outing .
Unless I end up making another airfield( sold the last one) or a civilian train.
Mark.
-
You're a wizard when it comes to cardboard magic! Excellent model!
-
ooooooh, so nice. You can never have too many armoured trains...

That's what outs him a level above all us mere mortals! :o
-
This is one of the best uses of cereal packet card I've seen! Great job! Congrats!
-
lol steady on.
You do know I just make this up as I go along ;)
I've decided I'll have to do a civilian train to. Having recovered from seeing the prices of O gauge . The wisest option ( which still allows me to eat and avoid being divorced/ murdered.) Is to carry on and build it from card.
I was contemplating the 517 class locomotives. As they've a service history that would cover both my VSF inclinations and my Ealing board.( which is what I'm plodding on with.) Admittedly it would be elderly by the 1930's. But if memory serves the last one was scrapped after 70 years of service.
Plus I'm never going to use more than 4ft of track. But I don't want to build another box on wheels such as a saddle tank engine.
Also I've just re watched 'Oh Mister Porter' which is pretty much the inspiration for the look of my railway stuff.
Other than walking many of the results of Mr Beachams musings I'm not in the least familiar with steam railways.
So if you've any idea's on a locomotive that has the feel of the bigger trains(as I woud like to be able to move it at least its own length on a 4ft table.)which isn't a locomotive with a full length saddle tank. As I don't want to build another box. ( the armoured train is just three pretty boxes.)
I'd love to hear them plus a pic wouldn't harm ( so I can at least pretend to know what your talking about ;) )
Mark.
-
No idea for your request, but those are some pretty boxes.
-

Don't we all! lol

How did you come to look at O gauge? From the pieces I've seen O gauge is FAR too large for 28mm. I prefer S gauge myself, but others prefer ON30, which is sort of S-gauge-y in terms of train size, but uses HO scale track. (IMO S gauge is perfect for rails, you can stand a miniature on a modest base between the rails without tilting - something you can't do with HO scale).
Mind you, S-gauge is prohibitively expensive as well, but it seems to at least be bang-on in terms of "looks right" scale for 28mm figures.
-
Oh and as for trains, You'd best decide if you're going to go with one locomotive or two.
With two, you can do a short-haul 0-3-0 tank engine without tender (a la Thomas) and a longer express/freight model, perhaps on a 2-4-0, 1-4-0, or 1-4-1 design, with a tender (there are larger, but then half your table length would be loco!).
If you're just doing one, a compromise is something like a medium-haul 1-3-0 or 1-3-1 setup, either with a longer built-in coal bin (tank-engine style again, just a bit elongated) or the sort with a half-length tender.
If you're baffled as to what I'm referring to with those numbers by the way, that's the nomenclature for locomotive wheel configuration, with left to right reading front to back of one side. So a "2-3-1" would indicate an engine with two small wheels forward of the driving wheels, three large drive wheels, and one small wheel under the cab.

Mark,
Michi is your man for all things train related. He has substantial knowledge in the subject and has done some pretty mind blowing lay outs
