Title: Chema WWII gallery : 3/5/2023 Panzer II winter camo
Post by: chema1986 on August 02, 2018, 09:32:11 AM
Hi again guys,

Yesterday, I finished painting a 7.5 cmm Pak 40 auf Geschutzwagen 39 (f)... but we will call him Marder from now on haha,  Marder with Pak 40 on an old French tank chasis, the little Hotchkiss H39.  The model itself is Madbob models, a brand who produces uncommon vehicles, like this conversion or Hungarian tanks.  The quality is average, it came only in 2 parts; the gun and the whole chasis with tracks, so i very simplistic design in my opinion, you can choose If you want to use the 105 mm gun or the 75mm. I chose the latter.

I just added a plastic MG 34 and camo net as a "conversion"  The model was painted with AMMO MIG acrilic paints. It is the first time I use them and I am happy with their performance. I have been using Tamiya paints for years... but now I will combine both ranges. I was painted with airbrush, trying to modulate to lights, masking the different camouflages with "Panzer Putty", then I airbrushed satin varnish, put the decals, more varnish and the funny part: Weathering!
filters, oil fading, pin washes, streaking grime, chipping, dust washes, pigments... you now.

more here:

I painted as a tank destroyer of the 21 Panzerdivision in Normandy in June 1944.

Hello guys, I have painted a couple of little tanks this summer;
Here
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2020/07/bolt-action-manchukuos-type-94-tankette.html

Some months ago I decided to paint a small force for Warlord Games' Bolt Action, a defense force of the Empire of Manchukuo.  I know it is a rare subject, but I liked the idea of an auxiliary army fighting bandits, Chinese or Soviets in the steppes of Far East, with cavalry, outdated equipment and such. I started the project with a plane, a Japanese fighter in Manchukuo's service, you can see it here:

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/12/air-support-for-bolt-action-manchukuos.html

And next miniature is a "tank" well, a tankette, a type 94, also of Japanese origin, we know Japan supplied Manchukuo with at least 10 of these vehicles throughout the war, amongst other vehicles, but I found this one was the nicest of all (imho).

The kit is in resin and metal, by Warlord Games, painted with Ammo Mig paints and weathered in the usual way of enamel washes, chipping and pigments. This time I think I did too much dusting on the vehicle, but it is not a big issue given the dusty and sandy terrain of the north China/Mongolian plains.

I downloaded a Manchukuo flag from the internet and added it to the tank, following the Japanese way of attaching flags to vehicles, in order to give some colour to the little model.  It's not my best paintjob, but I like it anyway.

Next tank is a Panzer Hotchkiss H39, from Rubicon Models.
In Normandy there were several Panzer brigades armed with obsolete French tanks, which gave initial support to the infantry divisions in the firsts hours and days of the invasion, so I NEEDED at least one of these beauties in my army !

I painted a similar tank (well, a tank hunter) 7.5 cmm Pak 40 auf Geschutzwagen 39 (f) a couple of years ago, you can see it here:

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/search/label/Normandy.

Well now lets talk about the model, It comes in resin, super high quality resin, indeed, the best tank model in resin I have ever seen, so highly recommended. The detail is crisp, clean and very accurate in my humble opinion, so I could´nt be happier with my purchase.
The painting was made by primming the model in dark grey with Ammo Mig spray can, and then airbrushed with paints of the same brand; dark yellow modullation paints, and camouflage colours in green and brown.

Then I applied gloss varnish with the airbrush, and applied the decals, just Balkenkreuzes in turret and rear of the tank,  another coat of varnish in order to protect the decals... and then the funny part, the weathering!

-tan filter

-oil dots fading

-pin washes

-chipped paint in two tones

-streaking grime with enamels

-dust and dirt with enamels

-dust and mud with pigments

-oxide and smoke with pigments

-matt varnish

-grease and oil in enamels (as they are glossy, I applied after the matt varnish, because I wanted them to stand out)

-Graphite to the tracks.

It is great to see some Manchukuo represented!

My friends and I ran a small Japanese vs. Russian campaign set in Manchukuo using Bolt Action a couple of years ago. I personally play solo skirmish games using the Five Men In Normandy rules set in Manchukuo, pitting my little group of Chinese bandits against Japanese occupiers, Russian invaders, and even other Bandit gangs as they struggle to survive against the background of constant war.

Thanks! I love putting some "Manchukuoans" in the table, I also painted some air support earlier this year, a Nakajima Ki 27 in 1/72 here you have pics : https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/12/air-support-for-bolt-action-manchukuos.html

for the miniatures I think I will use Copplestone Chinese, because I have heard that Brigade Games Manchukuo's cavalry is very poor quality in its sculpting...

Cheers!

Very inspiring. I for one would love it if you could produce a step-by-step tutorial for us lesser mortals to follow. Or at the very least explain how you did the flag!

Thanks mate!  You have a little step by step in the blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2020/09/bolt-action-normandy-44-panzer.html

The flag is printed from the internet, and then glued the two parts together with white glue and while it is still wet, fold the flag into the desired shape, it is quite easy :)

Cheers

Thank you, but what I actually meant was one with pictures for each step, haha.

Was the flag given a wash, or is that just a trick of the lighting?

Hi guys, I have just updated my blog with a new thread on Axis tanks in Sicily 1943:

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/03/bolt-action-italian-tanks-in-sicily-1943.html

I needed a rest of XVII c. painting, so I took a couple of kits from the pile of lead (or resin, or plastic) for my Bolt Action growing collection.  As an ex modeller and current wargamer, I love painting WWII tanks and planes, and I am also a fan of rare vehicles or not so well not tanks, so here you have my Italian tank force for operation Husky,  Sicily July 1943.

left: Semovente 90/53  right: Renault R35

I have built a small force of German Panzer force of Hermann Göring division (Panzer III and Panzer IV in plastic, Warlord and Rubicon) and now I need some Italians.   Italian armoured forces in Sicily in 1943 were very weak after their defeat in Africa, and most armor was in the Italian Peninsula, with their amoured divisions being rebuilt... So no M13/40 or Semovente 75/18 medium vehicles in Sicily, just light tanks and obsolete vehicles like old vintage Fiat tanks from 1920's or ex French  Renault R35, but also brand new Semovente 90/53 tank hunters.

 I have used both R35 and Semovente 90/53,  Warlord Games and Blitzkrieg Miniatures respectively. None of them is of great quality;

R35 from Warlord is just ok, it does its duty, not a bad model but not great either.  But I expected more from Semovente 90/53 from Blitzkrieg Miniatures, is my first vehicle from this company, and in the web I saw a nice render with smooth finish and crisp detail.... It was not like that in the flesh, although it had no flash, the sculpting was a little crude, and the gun shield seemed 3D printed in resin but the rivets were not properly printed so I had to clean and remove some of them :(   anyway, and despite those setbacks, both models were nice enough for me and when painted, they look good in my opinion.

The semovente 90/53 was a 90mm gun mounted on a tank hull, basically. 24 Semovente 90/53s saw service against the Allies in the 10° Raggruppamento Semoventi, which was stationed in Sicily during the Allied invasion in 1943. Following the Italian surrender in September 1943, the few surviving Semoventi da 90/53 were seized by the German Army, but were of little value in the mountainous terrain of Northern Italy where they operated. As a result, most finished their careers as long-range artillery.

French Renault R35 light tank was captured in huge numbers by the Wehrmacht in 1940, as it was considered obsolete by 1941, The Germans sent the Italian Army 124 R35s, with which the 4th Tank Infantry Regiment formed two battalions. The two battalions were assigned to the 131st Tank Infantry Regiment, which was deployed in January 1942 to Sicily. There, the regiment's CI Tank Battalion "R35" was assigned to the XII Army Corps defending the island's West, while the regiment with the CII Tank Battalion "R35" joined the XVI Army Corps defending the island's South. It used some of its R35s in defence of Gela on Sicily against US Rangers and British troops, with little success.

The painting process of both was the usual with tanks: airbrushing the colors, giving them some cenital highlights, then gloss varnish,  decals  (Warlord Games), and varnish again in order to protect the previous work, and then all the weathing with enamels and oils from Ammo Mig or AK interactive; filters, oil dots, pin washes, chipping, rust, streaking grime, dust effects, mud, and then matt varnish, spilled grease/oil and finished!

I like to base my tank models in order to give them some protection when using them on the gaming table.

Finally, although they were featured in an other post in this blog, I want to show you my full Axis tank force in Sicily.

My Hermann Göring division Panzer III ausf.M and Panzer IV ausf.G from Warlord Games and Rubicon Models respectively!

I think it is a reference to the white cupola looking like a Star Wars astromech droid.  With the Commander having to also fulfill the role of gunner and loader I would have though an R2 Unit would be really useful.

Title: Bolt Action Gallery: 19/07/2021 STALINGRAD PANZERKOMPANIE Flames of War
Post by: chema1986 on July 19, 2021, 09:59:47 AM
Hi guys!

I have updated my blog with this new post :

 https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/07/flames-of-war-stalingrad-panzers.html

I have painted some WWII stuff after a few days off, a bunch of Zvezda 1/100 Panzer III and Panzer IV, for my Flames of War Stalingrad project.

Last month I was painting more XVII c. stuff but I stopped without finishing my French petard team (but I will finish that soon) because I had several games of Flames of War with a friend at home, and my mood/interest switched from baroque period to World War 2, so I finished my half painted 14 Panzerdivision for Stalingrad.  I also bought Flames of War Scenery and some candy like a 15mm Junkers 52 for scenery purposes, also 3 Opel Blitz, 3 sdkfz.10 with flak, a couple of Stuig 33 and so on.

The Panzers are all Zvezda with some battlefront plastic and metal add ons, like stowage, tracks, guns (in the panzer IV).   Panzer III are of early type of shorter gun, for longer 50mm guns I will use Battlefront's plastic set of Panzer III.   And Panzer IV are D. version, I know they should be F1 models for Stalingrad battle, but I had 3 Zvezda nice Panzer IV D and "converted" them with F1 metal guns from Battlefront and turret rear boxes also in metal.

I painted them as If they were display models, so a lot of weathering. In the future I think I will put less dust and paint less chipping in the vehicles, because in this scale I prefer cleaner tanks (just a personal preference), but I am very pleased with the result of the unit.

As they are 2 platoons of 3 models, I will add a company HQ of a Panzer III ausf J and Panzer IV ausf F2 or even a captured T.34 mod.41 from the Stalingrad Starter Set of Flames of War.

I also have been inspired by the brand new Ammo Mig Stalingrad colors book :) very interesting and full of color profiles of tanks and vehicles of both sides:

Hello guys,

I decided to move back to WW2, to my Sicily 1943 project:

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/10/bolt-action-fallschirmjager-for-sicily.html

I am painting a platoon of Fallschirmjager in Sicily 1943,  I have painted 6 out of 12 so far.

The miniatures are Artizan Designs, from an out of production line of "Ramcke Brigade" paratroopers in North Africa, but I found them excellent for Sicily too, with their tropical uniforms, in summer shirts are so on.

I have painted six of them so far, deliberately changing the shades of yellow ochre on the different miniatures, in order to give more flavour to the unit.

the other 6 are just primed in brown, waiting in the painting queue ( I hope to paint them soon).

I already have a couple of Panzers of Hermann Goering division and another couple of Italian tanks in Sicily, some standard German infantry (in fieldgrey uniform) with mortar and HMG, but I wanted to add more "Mediterranean" feeling to the army with some Fallschirmjager in tropical uniform, and, in the future, Italian infantry too.

Hi guys

I have just updated the blog with 3 Panzer II in winter camo for my Flames of War Stalingrad project :)

https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2023/05/flames-of-war-panzer-ii-whitewashed.html

The detail of these little tanks is decent and good enough for gaming purposes, and they are quite light and small. I accidentally broke one of the mgs, they are very thin and brittle, but it was easily fixed with plastic glue.
I really enjoyed painting them in winter camouflage, with the white wash over the panzer grey paint.

By late 1942 (and almost 1943) Panzer II were clearly outdated and outgunned by enemy tanks, but they were still useful as rear guard actions or airfield protection.  As I am buillding a small airfield , inspired in  Gumrak airport in Stalingrad, or something similar, with a 1/100 Junkers 52 in the airstrip... I wanted to have some Panzer II as the defense force against Soviet hordes in my games.

I used  Ammo Mig Chipping fluid over the panzergrey paint, and the white paint over this fluid... then just brushed on some water, and the white paint began to tear off or "chip".

Then I applied the usual weathering on the tanks as follows...

Gloss varnish, decals, more gloss varnish to protect all the previous work... filters, oil dots fading,  pin washes, chipping, dust & mud, and matt varnish!

I hope you like these small tanks!
