Title: ECW cavalry colors
Post by: rampantlion on August 17, 2018, 07:39:36 PM
Did ECW cavalry units carry their colors into battle or did they store them during actual combat like some later cavalry units did?

Thanks

Reading Nigel Tranter's Montrose, he implies that colours are carried for all units.

Cornets (not colours) were carried into battle, one Cornet per troop.

... but none have survived, and no-one really knows what most looked like, beyond a few written descriptions. FWIW ECW Dragoon regiments didn't have cornets/colours.

Didn't Dragoons carry guidons in battle? IIRC swallow-tailed ones?

Yes, Dragoons had swallow tailed guidons which were carried into battle (as evidenced, for example, by those captured).

As for no cavalry Cornets surviving, you may want to the visit the City of London museum and look at the original Cornets  on display there? 😉 They are well worth the visit.
