Title: VSF walker on my workbench updated Aug 31
Post by: Menelduir on August 18, 2018, 12:00:38 AM
Hi

While not in the same league as Tin Shed and his amazing cardboard creations, I offer up my re-purposing of toys and other junk. This is a project that has been hanging around in my mind and in junk/bits boxes for years.

As mentioned somewhere I have actually cleaned up my game room, and in particular my work table. Now I can finally get to work on some long over due projects. That said I woke up this morning and decided to tackle my walker project today.

I still have not figured out how to insert pictures into these posts except at the end...so comic life to the rescue again.
The green part is a farm toy from Dollarama from a few years back. I had always planned to use the excavators as tractor/tows for armoured infantry, but then realized the potential value in the arms as legs. Now I have far more tractors than I will ever need, but for the happy to have enough stuff to build two walkers.

I'm flattered. But it's misplaced. As it's alot harder to convert and recycle existing items(and end up with something where the original parts aren't glaringly obvious in the finished model.)Than to start totally from scratch.

So I'll be watching your progress with interest.(once Partizan is out of the way of course  ;))

Mark.

Big gun coming out the ‘front’?

Oddly uncertain how I will arm this. I was thinking of a sponson off the left side of the main structure (the elongated door), or maybe a gun from the front hull. Originally maybe just a machine gun, but I am looking at upgrading that idea.

Thank you for the comments, slow progress on the weekend, added some intermediary 'abdomen' between the legs and main structure. My big deep dive into my bits boxes became lets organize everything...I am so easily distracted. However weekdays are actually my more productive days, as I have plenty of alone time to work on stuff, so hopefully more work on Monday and Tuesday.

First picture show possible sponson location.
Second picture is a better look at the door details that helped to inspire me to use this as a walker
Third picture show front mounting option, either under the leading edge of the sloped surface on a roller, or on the front edge itself
Final picture just another idea I am toying with...

The arms as legs idea is inspired

Thanks

Thoughts on a name for this, how about The Iron Duke, the profile kind of has a hook nose look to it, sort of reminiscent of 'old nosey'.  :D

Having a large gun underslung on a central pivot would look cool. It would have to be trained/aimed carefully in order to fire in-between legs.

Might be too late given the build so far. Does the ladder fold up?

Interesting idea, I had not thought of that. Definitely something to ponder.
As for the ladder it is currently just pinned in place, as I continue to test out ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion, that is what I am looking for I had the basic outline in my mind for years, but not the details. I have enough arms/legs and torsos to build two of these.

A very inventive and creative use of parts; it's a great build! Can't wait to see how this one looks finished, and I've been taking notes, as your work is inspirational for future building projects. ;)

I had a bit of a gasp moment though, as I mistook the 'gothic' elements you used for the feet, for spires from the old plastic Epic Imperator Titan! Only on the second take did I recognise them for parts from the Pegasus Gothic Buildings/Ruins... lol

Couple of roughed in shots of the model with gun mounted.
Couple of options no real reason that the sponson could not be added to it even if one of the other gun options is selected.

Shout out to Pendrake the under slung mount is growing on me.

I think I prefer the chin mount as the underslung might cause a few leg problems if the timing is off  lol

A mechanical interruptor, as pioneered by Fokker in WWI on his planes perhaps? Except this one would not be working with a spinning propellor, but with moving legs... :D

Making the ammunition miss the legs isn't straight forwards but add to that when the hips move it looks to me like the legs would foul the barrel.

I prefer the chin mount too. The original plastic molding you are using for the body even looks like it was designed to house the elevation adjustment, with the lateral adjustment coming from the rotation of the 'head'.

I do think the chin mount would be better with a smaller caliber gun though. The engineer in me is looking at the very High centre of gravity and the amount of energy in the recoil and thinking you get one shot then you have to stand the walker up again. (mind you the engineer in me doesn't believe in walker robots either... but i have to keep him quiet sometimes)

I like the idea of the sponson, but the asymmetry of it means you get a very odd arc of fire with only one. I guess thats a judgement call.

Can you bring it up into the 'glacis plate?  Give that poor loader some room to work!!

That’s awesome , and fair play for having a great imagination/vision to see  the walker in those bits  ;)

I like that a lot, although walkers ain't my thing. I am going to look out for one of those green (combine harvester?) bits for myself to use as an WW2 artillery radar fire direction centre, either on a wheeled trailer or on the back of a vehicle. Thanks for the idea!

Chin mount or underslung look good. Chin mount looks like it's firing down on infantry, which makes sense.

DEFINITELY include the sponson.

What are you doing with the glacis anyway? At the moment it looks oddly plain and thereby out of place - perhaps a bit low too, that forward area is going to be cramped, especially with a chin mount or underslung gun. If you're planning driver's hatches and so forth, remember to leave room for the poor loader/gunner as well as a driver.

Also, if you don't put the main cannon underslung, I would still put something there. Not a weapon, but perhaps a winch or something, so it can carry or extract something.

WOW! Thank you for all the comments!
LAF is the greatest.

Now to weigh out the ideas and suggestions.
I plan to work on this on Sunday, so hopefully will have more completed pictures by Monday.

I am leaning towards chin mount. I also think I will add something to the belly, most likely the belly mount without a gun, it would represent some of the mechanical workings.

I agree about the glacis right now it is just textured plastic card so I will be looking into that too, and yeah I am also thinking about keeping the sponson.

So I believe the main weapon will be a hotchkiss revolving gun with a mg mounted on the sponson. Hopefully room enough to turn a crank and feed the shells. Not the most powerful vehicle, but fits with my thoughts about VSF.

Room for the gunner? Hatches? Sod the gunner, he doesn't need to see just keep turning that crank  :)
May look at a viewing port or two as currently there is only the one at the top of the glacis, very limited viewing ability.

Again thanks everyone for the ideas and comments.

The best laid schemes o' mice an' men  gang aft a-gley...

So other matters required my attention this past weekend, and today finds me needing to leave the house for some non game related activities  :(

So all I can do today is tease with a couple of pictures of two other VSF items that I have roughly assembled, again these projects have been sitting around for a few years, but with my new found enthusiasm I hope to get them done this week. With plenty of rain in the forecast I will remain indoors and will have the time to complete these.

I have to be one of the most easily distracted people around. That said I have done more work on this project. The distracting occurs when I go looking for parts/material, then find something else that I had put away a while ago, and then pull it out. I now have a Martian tripod, and NEF or two, components for two more British tanks and some mobile gun platform.

But I have re focused my efforts on not one but two VSF walkers. I figure it is easier to make the parts for both walkers at once instead of trying to duplicate the efforts some time later.

I have reworked some aspects of the build. The glacis will be changing, as will the profile. I have moved the exhaust to the left side behind the sponson. The red hook thing in back is now part of a winch system. I have added wheels for a couple of pulley systems, one for the winch in back.  One the pics shows the belts attached (test) I have also located something to represent a periscope, and I have made vision slits out of slotta bases.

There may be further delays on this project as the missus is on vacation next week and appears to have plans to get me out of the basement, at least a couple of days.

Included below pics of the main project and pics of some of the distractions, a Martian walker with heat ray,  and a Driftwood tree WIP.

Hey like that tree!
I REALLY want one of those green bodies (is it a combine harvester type farm toy?) is it a Britains toy?

Thanks for the comments

The green thing was a very cheap no name dollar store find. At one time the dollar stores around here carried a selection of farm toys. Basically a tractor towing a trailer with either a tank, a dump box, the harvester or some other piece of equipment that I did not recognize attached to the trailer.

Sadly that was some time ago as I really wanted some more of the dump trailers. (and harvesters)
The first picture of this thread pretty much shows what it looked like prior to being mounted onto the four legs.

Raised on a farm I can tell you that the green thing is a round baler, for making round hay bales.
