The men of Ulster stood facing the Romanised British host. They knew the British king was young and inexperienced, and that their own swords were tried, tested, and thirsty for more blood. The coming battle was not going to last long. Behind the British lines, smoke tricked into the sky in thin wisps from the British village. The Irishmen could practically taste their new slaves.
The full write up is on the blog: http://irregularwars.blogspot.com/2018/08/dux-bellorum-one-for-annals.html (http://irregularwars.blogspot.com/2018/08/dux-bellorum-one-for-annals.html). Safe to say, it didn't exactly go as planned.

“ Stand up for the Ulstermen “ , great batrep on the blog , I really must get around to trying these rules. Reports like this should motivate me , well done 👍.

Thanks guys. Dux is a really fun wee game. Between every other project, it doesn't grace the table enough, but everyone it does it is s really good evening. And 10mm really is the perfect scale for it. :D

Great blog, another one to inspire. I went directly to the Pendraken website and ordered enought for two armies for Dux Bellorum. I have had the rules as pdf for years and always like the ideas but your blog inspired me to jump in.
Doing more figs per larger base. 12-13 for Shield wall nice two rank line and the Warriors will be 15-20 figs more irregular. Cav will be about 8 for formed and less for skirmishers.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for posting this. I might have to have another look at Dux Bellorum. Last played this years ago.

Terrific looking game and AAR. Thanks for sharing.

I liked your leadership tokens. Were they old coins?

Dux Bellorum is a seriously underated game ;-)

It's probably at the inappropriate end of the malleable scale of ethical numismatics... but on the other hand, they were cheaper than buying tokens.

We played another very enjoyable game of Dux Bellorum this week. This time, it was Angles vs the Ulstermen (a foreshadowing of the next 1600 years?).

We'd never played a game between two warrior armies before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. A lot of wild charges probably. Well, we got that sure enough. Happily, although both forces were warrior-based, they were actually quite distinct...

A quick note of thanks for the inspiration. New to Dux Bellorum myself, and your battle reports have motivated me to get busy in getting this to the table.
(My aim - although it's a bit past the rules intended period - is for 10th/11th century Scotland with some of the stuff I now have.)

Glad to be of help!
I'm sure 10th century Scotland would be easy to do with the rules. Dan had already suggested using Early Saxon sea raiders as Vikings against late Saxon shieldwall armies.
