The latest project allied to collecting figures for the French in Indo-China. This construct is being done by Geoff Lacey of Purple Lion Creations for me.
It's in 28mm scale, you will see a Gringos40 Black Flag casting for scale
-
Wow :-*
-
Looks superb.✔️✔️✔️
-

Beautiful work of art. :o :-*
Mark
-
Thanks Mark, this project is for the Son Tay campaign 1883, the Citadel is an abstract the compound is 16 inches by 16 inches cost dictated I didn't go larger or include walled pagoda, I am however going to have a free standing watchtower /flag Octago all in shape based on the one I. Hue but minus the observation cupola.
-
Ooh that's a really pormising start. Very interested to see how it turns out. :)
-
Here are the Gate treatments
-
Render going on, bricks etched and battle damage
-
Superb :-* :-* :-*
I'm currently building from scratch a big gunboat (A french Crocodile class) to bombard your Indo-Chinese citadel ;D
That fort will be no match to us ;D
-
Ah but I will board your gun boat at night via my fleet of sanpan on The Red River
-
Its only true if you have pictures Shipka lol lol I need to see this fleet of sampans
-
Its only true if you have pictures Shipka lol lol I need to see this fleet of sampans
I have pictures of my Gunboat :D
But I have to admit that I had not thought of junks: foutues jonques !
I am going to have to make also armed rowboats to protect the gunboat :D
-
Post some pics of your gunboat please
-
Post some pics of your tugboat please
Belle tentative : it is not a TUGboat but a GUNboat : i know you prefer that is a TUGboat but no , it's a GUNboat :D
I will post pictures today or this weekend ;)

First undercoat on
-
Very nice indeed. Makes me think of the Alamo.
-
Excellent :-*
-
Really nice! :-*
-
beautifully done. can I guess construction is foam?
-
Cracking build and It looks like a good start on the paint job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Is this based on a real building?
It is a bit strange to have so many doors on a castle, being the weakest point and all that?
-
This is a condensed Vietnamese Citadel, it is an abstract build based on elements seen in eyewitness drawings along with remnants of period gates. A citadel would be encompassed by city walls and embrasures. The Citadel was not a castle! And would have historically four gates.
-
You are crazy good at this.
-
Still being painted, ignore the yellow
-
Wow it's really a good job :-*
-
It's coming along great- beautiful work.
-
How did I miss this?
The job is superb! Cheers!
-
Once this is complete, I have to look at the practicality of building the main wall that encompassed Son Tay, this is not as easy as it seems the overall shape of the perimeter was a kite shape and this will take up all of a War games table!!!!!!
-
Build it as the edge or a corner of your table?
-
Get a bigger table lol
Seriously, it would be worth it for something this magnificent :-*
-
Build it as the edge or a corner of your table?
That's the idea !
-
Just some extra paintwork to walkways and bullet holes to externals to be done
-
Superb , very inspiring :-*
-
Sturdy yet elegant construction, its geometrical features very well calculated! I like the stonework where the rendering has fallen and the weathering as well! Very nice! :-*
-
The gates are accurate representations of Vietnamese gateway's as are the Gate doors, the sweep above the North and South Gates are as seen in period de Lonlay etchings, the gun ports unify the lot
-
This is a truly inspiring piece of scenery! I can already see the Gringo range fighting for it.
-
Great painting :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I don't think this would work as a corner piece, so just go ahead and build the whole town walls ;) ;) ;)
-
It was never meant to be a corner piece but the kite shaped perimeter walls are a huge build not in complexity but space wise...
I am looking with the builder Geoff Lacey how to achieve the right look but saving space, meanwhile there is The Black Flag redoubt to consider, paddy fields, outlying Pagoda and village dwellings!

Sounds really interesting :D
-
Excellent finish :-* :-* and so quick for the quality of the build! I look forward to your additional builds and to see them on your table.

Final pics
-
Looks very realistic! The wall damage, the doors, the weathering!
Well done! A supeb item for your collection! Cheers!
-
It's accomplished :-*
-
Wonderful work Jeff from the model maker. Looks a treat! Your attic must now be full of these wonderful creations you have been commissioning?
Best wishes,
Helen
-
Wow, an excellent building.
So well done.
I am always amazed at the talent people on this Forum have.
-
Work has begun on the octagonal observation tower, which is an abstract construct
-
This octogonal tower is very special and sympathetical !
-
Nice model! The Hanoi citadel has one of those octagonal towers, I visited earlier this year, it’s right next to the main military museum. It seems the rather curious circular apertures were not a unique feature. Up close they are round windows with radial spokes, like a cartwheel.
-
Carlos this is an abstract construct, some elements might be changed!
-
Beautiful artwork. This would be worth having as a showpiece even if it wasn't for wargaming. :-* ;D
Mark
-
Tower construction early stages
-
Wow !
Where are you found the round windows !?
-
They were a special order, based on a Vietnamese window design I supplied to Geoff who is building this for me, they are 15'mm mdf
-
OK thanks !
-
Current progress on the tower
-
Superb work :-*
The "bricks and mortar" effect is by engraving !?
-
I believe Geoff made a stamp he uses!
-
Further work on the tower
-
Love the shapes you have with that building
Looks like it will paint up nice as well
-
Terrific build :)
-
Well the roof line on the plinth did not work, so we have gone back to the flat plinth
-
Priming and understating being done
-
Well done :)
-
Very beautiful and interesting build!
-
That's looking great! Can't wait to see the finished project!
-
Well within next few days the Observation tower will be finished, just weathering and the Windows to paint
-
Excellent work Shipka !
-
It already looks very realistic! Cheers!
-
very nice :-* :-* :-*
-
The completed tower
-
Brilliant Shipka ! Brilliant :o :-*
-
In situ within the citadel
-
Most excellent! :-* :-* Those round laser cut windows really make the tower pop.
Lon
-
Excellent fortress.
It is sure to be the center point of many battles.
:-* :-* :-*
-
A village house under construction
-
looking good Geoff :D

Beautiful work. Keep it up and please keep posting.
-
Coming out great! Very realistic walls, eager to see it finished!
-
There will be some further buildings to come, Pagoda, village farmers house, etc
-
Stunning work! Love how this is coming together
-
Work on roof has begun
-
Work continues, I have included a pic of a Chinese structure which was used for inspiration for some of the elements
-
Fantastic little structure- so much character! What are you using for render on the walls?
-
Whilst I commissioned the model, I am not privy to all of the builders secrets, sorry to say!!!
-
Excellent stuff!! ;)
-
Great stuff! :)
Mark
-
Superb and realistic modelling, a great thread. ✔️
-
So realistic, those windows are gorgeous. And the brickwork looks just like the real thing!
-
The finished dwelling, the first of the village which will be defended by Black Flags
-
Love it! You must be very happy to have that on your table.
Lon
-
A so perfect miniature! :-*
-
What gorgeous builds! Could you expand on wehat techniques that are used? are the walls foam boards. How are the masonry and brick work sculpted?
-
The builds whilst not my creations have sub structures of foam core , mounting board, externals are worked in polymer clay
