Title: 28mm Samurai: Sekigahara Project
Post by: Smoke Frog on September 09, 2018, 09:45:36 PM
Greetings!

Big fan of medieval Japanese history here, and I am hoping to continue working on this project for some time. Lots of great inspiration on this site!

I purchased Warlord Games' Test of Honour main box about a year ago. It looked like a neat idea for a game plus I always wanted to collect some samurai miniatures and add them to my wargaming collection. My experience is Warhammer fantasy/Mordheim, and in tackling this new game I wanted to figure out a way to make the figures compatible with regular Warhammer, and potentially other game systems I would like to try in the future such as KOW. I will be using magnets to switch some bases from round to square bases.

For color schemes, I decided to go with a historically inspired set of heraldry for the samurai/ashigaru banners, inspired by the Battle of Sekigahara. I have been doing a lot of research on the different leaders, daimyo, and clans who were involved in this battle, and will be picking and choosing between what I have found to be “accurate” and what looks good to me.

My friend has the Sekigaha board game from GMT , which we,ve played several times . It gives a good account of the campaign and might be used as a background for tabletop battles . It comes up secondhand on EBay from time to time .

Sir Belisarius I looked at the Sekigahara board game (which I am pretty sure was 15mm?) and considered getting it, but that was after I had already bought the Test of Honour set (28mm)  :(

Research

I have been enjoying working on the "fluff" for this project by researching the different clans that were present during the battle. I already posted a link to the screen that I have been taking inspiration from, here it is again with labels for all the clans I have been able to identify:

I was able to ID most of the major clans. The trickiest one was the Fukushima clan, which I originally thought were the Toyotomi clan based on the symbol. Turns out Fukushima Masanori was Toyotomi Hideyoshis cousin (https://samurai-world.com/fukushima-masanori/)... makes sense they shared some heraldry. I hope you can actually make out the labels, if not you can also find the image  here (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/89860955050091175/).

Using the screen and a map (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/89860955050091310/)...

...I was able to make my own decisions for what clan heraldry I was going to use. Here are my rough sketches of the battlefield, the clans, and their heraldry.

Zoomed in map for the battle:

Here is the clan information:

Western Army: Ishida Mitsunari and his allies, the Shimazu, Ukita, Konishi, Toyotomi, and others

Eastern Army: Tokugawa Ieyasu and his vassals/allies

Here the clans are all cleaned up for easy reference:

Army Size Planning

When I finally decided on the battle and using square bases, I was very curious to see just how big of an army I could eventually create (given enough time, money, time, painting skill, and time). I decided to do a little powerpoint-wizardry to make paper tiles to mark each unit that I could possibly make to create this army in 28mm.

Here are the block sizes I was working with:

Infantry (missile ashigaru, spear ashigaru, foot samurai): 40 x 40 mm; 4x infantry per base
Cavalry (samurai): 50 x 50 mm; 2 mounted samurai per base

Each tile has a picture of the clans I have been researching.

The Clans, starting with the Western Army:

Western Army Traitors (Kobayakawa and his allies who went over to Tokugawa and swung the battle in his favor):

Eastern Army:

Western Army to the rear of the Eastern Army (who never showed up in the actual battle but I may model them anyway):

...After everything was cut out, here is what it looked like on the game table!

And here are the generals I am thinking to lead the forces. Not sure if one or two of these were actually present, more research is required!

Magnetic Basing

In order to make these samurai miniatures functional on both square and round basing wargames, I will be using magnets. I bought a metal sheet and some tin snips to cut out dime-size circles.

The metal is magnetic, so by the addition of a small hobby magnet in each base I will be able to move the miniature on the metal circle onto whatever base I want!

Not all the samurai minis will be done this way of course, that would be too much work. Most will probably be going onto straight up square multi bases.

The first set of ashigaru that I based were for the Ukita Clan:

They look pretty good on the movement tray!

Also here are the square basing options:

Looks like a fun project, I like your approach. I have started samurai in 15mm twice, and 28mm twice. I never seem to get very far before moving onto something else.

10mm. That way it looks like a battle, not a skirmish. Sekigahara had nearly 200, 000 participants!

Ambitious project! What will it be ultimately, 700+ figures all told?

All your generals were present at the battle, except Kato Kiyomasa. He was fighting on Kyushu.

The mon for Otani Yoshitsugu (in case you wanted it for your general's card) was:

Good catch with Kato Kiyomasa; I have yet to see the actual Kato commander at Sekigahara featured as an actual model, so I may just cheat and have the legendary Kiyomasa stand in for him  :).

And good guess with the total number! Based on the test-tile build I did up it came out to a grand total of 776 total figures needed to cover all those bases (four per infantry square, two per cav square). This is the upper limit of figures I would ever reach in this project though... I don't think I will even get close to that far! Casting extra bodies and legs does help keep the costs down and use all those extra arms/legs/heads that come in the kits.

That being said... I only currently have 64 ashigaru/samurai fully painted up, with another 64 ashigaru on my worktable slowly painting through as I test new paint schemes. Long way to go!

10mm. That way it looks like a battle, not a skirmish. Sekigahara had nearly 200, 000 participants!

I have considered it! If I enjoy this project I may go back and do another historic samurai battle in another scale... maybe the Siege of Osaka!

There's some photos of a statue of Kato Yoshiaki here if you want to convert a figure for him:

Thanks for the resources!

I was also inspired by this one over at Burton and District Wargamers (http://badwargamers.com/bad/?p=1534), they did the entire battle of Sekigahara at a much smaller scale (6mm I think?). Really great stuff, and a good list of the contenders in the conflict.

The latter game was 15mm. You get a better appreciation of scale in the photos featuring stands being lifted up. Plus I recognise the wooden palisades models. An impressive looking game. Thank you for posting the link.

Earlier this month I was able to finish up a few blocks of infantry from the Ishida Clan:

I am hoping to build this project with enough flexibility to do multiple unit configurations (24 man units, 20 man units, or even horde sizes):

I also had fun putting the musicians together with extra cast bodies:

My first five Samurai cavalry were also fun to paint up; it gave me a chance to experiment with a few different armor colors.

From left to right: Ishida, Konishi, Ishida, Ukita, and Shimazu; all Western Army.

Got this off Wikipeda:

Looks like two crossed long-leafs. I have seen this clan before in color, couldn't find a picture. The mon itself was yellow and the background was red. Hope this helps!

Those really do look magnificent. Along with Aztecs, I think samurai are the most visually striking armies out there. Stunning work!

Agreed, those two army types look great.

Cool additions, I like the daimyo.

Working on another side project: a small samurai-themed terrain board!

Totally was inspired by the designs from the internet that I have now can't find the link too  :(

Also made up my own cherry tree test:

Cherry blossom foilage is from Huge Miniatures based out of Ohio.

Been away for a minute, and while I was gone I got a package of Daimyo from Steel Fist Miniatures (https://www.steelfistminiatures.com/product-category/samurai-wars-c1550-1615-product_cat-19/daimyo-product_cat-19/)!

Ishida Mitsunari:

Shimazu Yoshihiro:

and Honda Tadakatsu:

They are all 28mm and have two bannerman each tagging along. I have never used these brass banners before so that will be an experiment.

Size wise, they are roughly the same size as Perry in scale without the base, maybe a tad bigger:

The size difference is more obvious against the horse from Warlord Games, the warlord plastics are more obviously smaller.

Honda himself is huge!

No issues though, as these models are all daimyo and will rightfully so stand out from the masses and the rank-and-file. The quality seems great and I am very excited to start painting these guys. Thanks Steel Fist!

Update for my samurai, I have been gone for over a year and just this past month I made it back to working on them.

I got three of my samurai heroes painted up.

Honda Tadakatsu (Steel Fist Miniatures):

Ishida Mitsunari (Steel Fist Miniatures):

Ishida's Bannermen:

and Tokugawa Ieyasu himself and his retinue, to include Honda on foot (Perry).

Thanks!

Most of the credit for this research is definitely from the old samurai archives (http://www.samurai-archives.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1638&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=e29981be50aa77181c14c63f17f2895b), as well as a few other sources.

Some work on Tokugawa Ashigaru:

Alas I am too stubborn to go buy and learn how to use transfers for the banners.

Along with the ashigaru came a few samurai on foot:

And progress continues on the samurai board.

That is a tremendous amount of lovely looking stuff, I hope to be in a similar position one day, well done.

If I might give you some feed back and that is a coat of matt varnish (testors dullcote or Mr Hobby Flat are my preferred choices) would just take that sheen off your models and lift the paint jobs further. (of course you may prefer that)

Really appreciate you sharing the effort of all that is immense!

Funny you mention this, I meant to pick up some matt varnish yesterday when I went to the paint store, but forgot about it until I made it back home   :?

I do like the paint jobs as they are now (in my own barely tabletop worthy level of painting  :D ) but want to experiment with it some more, specifically for applying water transfers in the future.

Got some more Perry and Kensei miniatures over the weekend and have started working on them, they will be enough to finish off three more daimyo: Ukita, Fukushima, and Shimazu.

The Kensei model will fill in for Fukushima Masanori of the Eastern Army

Planning to base his armor off this historical example:

The Kensei model is 32mm, so quite a bit bigger than the 28mm warlord games Ukita on the left. He is nearly the same size as the Steel Fist Honda model I already painted, mostly because of how big the horse is.

Also got some progress on the banners and on Shimazu Yoshihiro himself:

really nice project, where did you find the color schemes for the uniforms, please ?

thanks

To be honest the color schemes are from all over the place. I find examples on the internet and try and duplicate them with the paint on hand. Since my goal is creating two roughly-equivalent forces of equal size depicting the two sides in the Battle of Sekigahara, I decided to make the Eastern Army have a "red" theme, and the Western Army a "blue" theme. Granted this doesn't always match up, but its the goal.

Some examples:

The banners (sashimono, nobori, etc) are mostly modelled off of the sekigahara screen (first page of this thread) and banners found on either google search or in the samurai archives thread (http://www.samurai-archives.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1638&sid=b9bc94c080aa81cc83855ef65db1a2dc).

Also good reference on armor is this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BnBtJIR9HU); turns out most armor of the time period didn't actually match as it was mostly colored based on what was on hand, except for specific circumstances like Ii Naomasa's Red Devils.

Progress continues on the daimyo, they are nearly finished.

Also finished up six more samurai on foot.

Bases are magnetized, now I have enough for six blocks of samurai infantry.

More work has been done so far this month starting with some more ashigaru, this time for the Fukushima clan:

Twelve more samurai cavalry are also complete:

Most excitingly I have completed four cannons to add to the army.

**Disclaimer: these guys aren't really period accurate  lol

That is because I found these super-cheap cannons from Wizkids for about $4 for two cannons, and I couldn't find any feudal-Japanese era cannons that spoke to me for the same price. Plus I have enough spare bits lying around I could easily convert up some close enough artillery crews!

Ukita Clan:

Shimazu clan:
