Title: Roman Allies for Punic Wars
Post by: Hu Rhu on September 15, 2018, 09:43:23 PM
A couple of years ago I started painting a Roman Republican army based on the wonderful Victrix figures.  I used the Army Painter 16 as a spur to get the bulk of the army started so that my gaming buddy and I could run the Punic Wars campaign that we always wanted to do.

You can see my earlier work on this thread which covered the first two legions:  http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=92479.msg1142468#msg1142468

Since then Victrix have continued to push out some excellent Punic Wars figures and I have been steadily collecting them, but without the time to paint large numbers of figures, the project stalled.

However in time for the New Year and round 2 of our Campaign, I have started to look again at the missing figures.  First up are some Spanish Scutarii along with a command stand.  Units will be 16 figures spread over a larger base/bases to give the flavour of a wilder bunch of warriors than their Roman counterparts (who are all based in12 figures in two lines).

Then I was tempted to do some small conversions of their Greek light cavalry.  I have been waiting patiently for Victrix to release their Republican cavalry (still waiting) so decided to convert some Italian allied cavalry.  This was really simple - slice off the lower half of the light cavalryman and match him with half of an armoured Samnite.  Add an Italian helmet voila!

So I decided to convert a few more.  Here are the elements of the first unit of 6 figures including  some command figures.

Next up are some Italian allied legion.

Very effective. Exactly where plastics come into their own.

Nice conversions, well done!
And the scutarii shields particularly colorful!
Eager to see the cavalry painted! Cheers!

Nice.  How big are the horses in this set?  I have some of the Gallic cav and the horses are enormous.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Thanks.  I agree that good plastics are very effective.  It all depends on what you are working with as to how effective the conversions are.

The shields are from LBMS and once you get the hang of them are really effective. I certainly couldn't paint them to that standard freehand.

Don't have the Gallic cavalry but the Greek cavalry horses seem well proportioned to me, in relation to the figures, although one pose is quite long.  I'll take some close up shots and post later this week.

Just finished putting together the Italian Allied Legion and will post some shots later this week.
