Title: A work in progress sci-fi building
Post by: StreetBushido on September 16, 2018, 12:23:02 PM
I've been working on this sci-fi building for use with 28 mm figures.

The three miniatures used for scale are a Goliath ganger from Necromunda, a Genestealer Neophyte and a Spetznatz dude from Infinity.

The materials used are foamcore, card and plaster moulded in Hirst Arts moulds.

The roof is detachable. And the little box on top is going to contain a roof garden.

Here's an interior shot with some random stuff.

I'm not sure if I want to have anything permanently added to the interior of the building. However, there is a big blank wall there that could use some sprucing up.

Finally I'm considering cutting away the excess MDF outside of the building. A friend I asked about this thought I should keep it as a sidewalk-type deal, but I'm not sure.

Thoughts?

Looks good so far  8)

I try and keep enough of the base round the edge so a figure can be placed on it (we count them as in soft cover).

Nice work, very promising.
It looks very 'playable' too.

Leave the extra Hardboard as a walkway, it suits your build.

Impressive! That's quite a load of work, but it totally paid off. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Looks great! Will look amazing when painted!
Personally I would leave the interior wall blank or have low level detail so that loose detail can be placed flush to the wall.

That is very nice indeed!

large enough to convince it's a real building, nice detailing (I especially like the greebling of the outer walls), but small enough to be used freely on the tabletop.

How will it be painted? In a very bright utopian way, or a dystopian grunge instead?

Cool - and I'd leave the edge - you can actually put that on top of another structure ad raise it to first floor level, if you don't mind risking dropping the models.

Nice work! Would like to see it when you have it all painted.

What size pipe mold do you have from Hirst  Art?

Thanks for all the comments, guys! It's really gratifying and is getting me all fired up to finish this project!

The consensus seems to be to keep the edge around the building, so that's what I'll do. Any thoughts on how to paint that bit?

I'm glad you asked about how I'm going to paint it. I don't think I've ever painted a modern or sci-fi building before and am thus at a bit of a loss. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Thus far I only have vague ideas about concrete, grafitti, steel, rust and water stains. But I also want the edges around the windows and the corners of the building to be painted in some other colour than the rest of the model.

Ideas? Advice on how to paint concrete?

Nice work! Would like to see it when you have it all painted.

I have both pipe molds, but for this project I've only used the one with the smaller pipes.

Thanks, I have been thinking of getting a few set of Hirst Art's molds, just trying to figure out which ones I wish to get.
