This is a lovely set-up! Could you please give a list of the models you used? I recognize a few from Oshiro, but not the rest.
-
Really like the terrain pieces :-* :-* :-*
The bottleneck through the wooded hill looks like a death trap that will see a lot of action.
And no bridge across the river will be a nice challenge.
-

All the buildings are mine apart from the castle which is the Adolfo Ramos one which is out of production.
Dave (TM Terrain) has done a lovely job on them :)
-
Dream terrain , beautiful to look upon . I can only guess at the work and expense involved . The little waterwheel ,the river , and the fort are all superb.
-

Correct
My friend Dave Marshall did most of the stuff on this table, with the exception of the castle.
I also have a more arid layout for BoB games, but I will show you that at a later stage.

Ho Lee Chit, where fook did that hue come from :o
BLUE symbolizes exploration, calmness and immortality in Chinese culture, all important things to a Warlord in the back of beyond, so I will bluff my way by saying it was done on purpose.

Very nice AHs. Like that they are wearing helmets.
White helmets? I'm intrigued.
-
Very striking - they look really menacing! :)
-
Austro-Hungarian POWs ! Fantastic - really adds something different to the table. I love how a couple of them have a mix of Russian and Austrian uniforms.
-
Cheers guys
I got the idea for weathered white helmets from the Osprey Ottoman Turk reference which features a soldier from an assault party wearing what looks to be an off white helmet. I think the white works well against the blue/grey uniforms.
-
There is one problem))) Shoulder straps soldiers wornexclusively "White". In the Red Army during this period the use of shoulder straps is impossible.
-
Tell me more?
-
In the Red Army, shoulder straps and military ranks were completely abolished, as an equal sign of all military personnel. However, very quickly the “red” understood that it was impossible to do without any insignia in the army. Then there were introduced sleeve insignia and a special chest badge for commanders. Shoulder straps are preserved only in most of the "white" armies and became a symbol of belonging to the anti-Bolshevik formations. The Red Army returned shoulder straps only in 1943.
Former prisoners of war in the Red Army could retain elements of their former uniforms, but they definitely could not have epaulets (it was just dangerous in the red camp). Yes, and helmets and other equipment was hardly available to them. They wore red ribbons, bows, and bandages as insignia.
-
I am wrong. In the available photos, I see some shoulder straps (((

In theory you're not wrong. The Red Army did ban shoulder boards as 'Tsarist'. They only brought them back in 1943, when Stalin was instilling some Russian Nationalism back into the Red Army. It's why you should have one set of Russians for 1939-42, and another set for '43 onwards.
I remember reading why Red Army soldiers wouldn't have worn them, because if the commissars caught you wearing them, they were nailed into your shoulders...with nails. Those Russians ::)
-
A lovely, yet practical gameboard.

I pissed about with modular terrain boards for years, but you can't beat the flexibility that gaming mats offer.

Oh, believe me, I know about the Russians enough ;)
The fate of commissars and communists who were captured by the whites was also unenviable. Often, gentlemen officers cut out the stars on their backs or on their foreheads.
Do not forget that then people who lived under serfdom were still alive. This is when landlords could sell their peasants, flog them ... and could kill with impunity. Is it any wonder hatred grown over the centuries of injustice?
Not only the Red Army then abandoned the shoulder boards. Many anti-Bolshevik formations also did not want to use them. For example Komuch, the Siberian Army, the Czechoslovak Corps, various rebels, many nationalists. Shoulder boards have become a symbol of social inequality.

This model has been sitting in ShedHQ for a while actually, so no last minute rush to purchase before the deadline. I actually think Dave is making a mistake by only selling painted buildings, but I understand that he is trying to wind down the business anyway.

Red Cavalry Squadron from the 1st Cavalry Army, also know as Budyonny's Cavalry Army
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BCJ1k9-iu8I/XHbPAImh7FI/AAAAAAAAMgo/-BBJa-_VtXkmBOk2dAd4i6hdSAfV0ly2QCLcBGAs/s1600/thumbnail%2B%252840%2529.jpg)
This army played an important role in winning the Civil War for the Bolsheviks, driving the White General Anton Denikin back from his advance towards Moscow. In 1920 Budyonny's Cavalry Army took part in the defence from Poland during the Polish-Bolshevik War, at first with remarkable success. The 1st Cavalry Army pushed Polish forces out of Ukraine and broke through Polish southern frontlines, but later was bogged down at Lvov. This in turn led to a heavy defeat of the rest of the Bolshevik forces in the Battle of Warsaw. When Budyonny's Cavalry finally joined the battle it was also soundly defeated in the Battle of Komarów, known as the last great cavalry battle in history. At this point, the 1st Cavalry Army's morale and discipline were at a low point and robbery and violence against the civilian population became commonplace. The 1st Cavalry Army also became known for periodic outbreaks of murderous anti-semitism.
The remains of the 1st Cavalry Army were sent south to fight Wrangel’s White forces in Ukraine and the Crimea. In May 1921 the 1st Cavalry Army was moved to North Caucasus. This movement was the basis of myth about the invincible 1st Cavalry Army, which has been cultivated by Soviet propaganda. On 4 May, its field headquarters was used to form the headquarters of the North Caucasus Military District (2nd formation). However, troops remained subordinated to the army staff until its dissolution on 11 October 1923.

The march of the 1st Cavalry Army became popular after the Russian Civil War and was celebrated in a song, We are the Red Cavalry (Russian: Мы красная кавалерия). Other titles of the song were "Мы красные кавалеристы" (We, Red cavalrymen) and "[Марш Буденного]" (Budenny march), and "Марш красных конников" (March of the Red horsemen). In commemoration, a monument to the 1st Cavalry Army was constructed in Lvov oblast, Ukraine.

This topic illustrates the folly of not reading topics on subjects you don’t game. Just clicked on it in a moment of boredom and Wow....! Just stunning and gorgeous and lovely....! So impressive. Congratulations..... :-*

I am looking forward to doing a batrep on the arid layout, it will look very cool.
There is also a fortified sea harbour in the pipeline, which is going to look the business ;)

If you want to imply dominance in the Caucasus, then build a dirty big Russian Orthodox Church in every town.

Time for some water features next, so I need some nice looking boats/ships, any suggestions?

Love this.

Ainsty Castings have some nice boats, and useful quayside stuff.
-
Cheers guys!!
I am good for a quay and jetty, plus I have two large stone bastions for either side of the habour, so just the boats to obtain going forward.
-
Lord Raglan, I would suggest you reach out to Dan from Last Stand Boatyard. He makes all sorts of Gunboats, steamers, steam launches, sailboats, and Dhows. I know he’s planning to branch off into other boats as well.
https://www.laststanddan.com/
-
That's a good recommendation JB, but I am looking for something a little more modern and bigger.
-
Raglan, understood. How modern and how large. I think the L70 could do duty into the 1930’s painted grey with some updated hardware and guns. That’s actually what I plan to do with it. He can also make custom boats as well. Either way I’m really looking forward to what you come up with.

You and I are in the same boat.
It's Hollywood all the way, button counters be damn. ;D
I purchased some Colonial British awhile ago.
The reason, the Model As or ts.
Soo... cool, had to have them.
My early version of the Rat Patrol. :D
-
As I have got older, the Hollywood approach is even more appealing to me, simply on the basis that it’s what most people find the most relatable.
-
Those Brits are superb
-
Lovely Brits Raglan! I can be a real history nerd and button counter sometimes but I've spent too many years chasing the perfect. Now I'm increasingly inclined to go more for having some nice figures on the table, and to let the small historical issues slide. Of course what is a small historical issue is quite subjective. :D

The Dervish War 1900–20 - Beja Tribal Group. Each tribe is led by a mounted Emir (tribal leader) and contains two native war bands. A war band is comprised of a Sheikh (leader) and 24 warriors. There are 4 Beja Tribes in the collection.

Really like your war bands.
What rules are you planning to play, using them?

"When did the Brits start using motor transport to move
artillery and Infantry?"
They certainly used them to move both in the Third Afghan War in 1919, so easily canon for BoB I'd have thought
-
Hi Peterem,
Thanks for the answer to my question.
I figured that was the case.
Even if it was not true, I still would used them. ;D
Too cool not to. 8)

The Dervish War 1900–20 - Beja Tribal Group with mounted Emir (tribal leader). These fearless Somali Warriors fought against British and Italian soldiers who were all armed with the most modern weapons of the era. They get my respect.

Dervish War. A Somali Gun Captain encourages his men to increase their rate of fire against the British invaders. I love the interaction between the two guys on the right, that’s top-notch job satisfaction right there boyo!!

Mounted Dervish Tribesmen. The battles between various sides over two decades killed nearly a third of Somaliland's population and ravaged the local economy.
