I don’t know if people know this (or if it’s old news or not) but I just popped in to the local art shop to get a W&N No 2 and was told that there is a sable shortage so getting your particular size brush might be a problem.
cheers
James

What else is horse hair used for? Edit: To cause the shortage.
-
What are those weasels doing to us now, eh?
-
All joking aside, I just found this: maybe this is now being enforced in other areas as well?
Beginning in 2013, shipments to the U.S. of kolinsky hair brushes have been halted and in some cases seized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to the kolinsky's inclusion in the international CITES agreement.

Jeez, and to think that every time the wife shaves my back we just chuck the hair away! I could be growing a goldmine!

No that is why he doesn't sharpen the tip of his brushes with his lips. :D
In all seriousness that is why we need to start shaving Badgers!

Snitchy sends.

Well, Snitchy, please go out and shave a badger and come back and tell us how it went, if you please.
And, perhaps, a note to a near and dear to report to us your demise if it doesn't quite work out.
hmm, I wonder how the herds of taklons are doing? :?

No problem getting series 7 here in Canada.
Had a rather unfortunate loss of my no.1 brush, replaced it no issues.

Kolinsky sable has been on the CITES list for almost 2 decades.
This issue pops up every couple of years or so. The problem is the way that the US recognises the CITES classifications and applies restrictions in quantities on import licenses. There isn't a shortage of kolinsky fur - there are problems in distribution. This only applies to the USA. Europe, and as far as i know, everywhere else, is unaffected.
There's a pretty good article on it here... https://www.artistsnetwork.com/art-techniques/kolinsky-sable-brush-availability/

I could be growing a goldmine!
Or a source of for rubberizes horse hair.
-
How can there be a shortage of sable? You must get hundreds of brushes out of just one of the creatures. Or do they only use the eyelashes and chuck the rest away?

No; just the tip...

No shortage in Oz that I’m aware of. Maybe it’s the population explosion in Pademelons that Tasmania has suffered since the demise of the Thylacine?
Do a quick google btw and you’ll see said shortage was being reported in the US four years ago.

Never trust a weasel. Particularly not a bald weasel.

There IS NO sable shortage. There are SOME restrictions on distribution in the US.
Read the link I posted above...
