Title: The Daniel36 Chronicles - A Tale of Fantasy Adventures
Post by: Daniel36 on October 14, 2018, 03:05:47 PM
As were many with me, I too was a victim of Photobucket's destruction, and it took me a very long while to regain my will to start over.

I finally decided to start an Imgur account after some people requested pictures of my Frostgrave Dungeon over at the Frostgrave section.

Since this site has given so much to me, it felt only right to give back again. This time however, I decided to go to the "regular" Fantasy section, as I am going to chronicle all of my work, not just my Frostgrave stuff.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
What to expect?
Page 1 - Several Frostgrave models
Page 2 - A homemade Dungeon + A variety of Mordheim models
Page 3 - Zombies for Mordheim + Several Mordheim scenery pieces + Mordheim in-game shots

Let's start with Frostgrave, the game that got me to join this forum in the first place.

Chronomancer

Elementalist

Necromancer

Witch

Enchanter

I have all of the first generation of Wizards, as well as some later ones. I am planning on getting every miniature in the Frostgrave range as I kind of love all of them. These were the first wizards that I managed to finish painting.

I stayed close to the original paint schemes for these ones, as I really liked them and it was easy to paint from example.

Also, some special characters

Lich Lord

Ghoul King

I like how all of the models are subdued. Nothing overly crazy going on (Looking at you Nagash!) and they have that old school feel to them that I really like.

Anyways, I will post more pictures later tonight, spread it out a little.

Nice  :) Thanks for posting these and looking forward to more. Have to agree they have a nice 'realistic' aesthetic.

Great brushwork for great minis. The Elementalist is my favourite. Like this figures very much.

Thanks, guys!

In the meantime, some more pictures.

Wounded Soldier - I love this guy.

Bowman - Seriously, it's not that hard to add strings. These aren't even that nice but they add a lot to the miniature.

Crossbowman - Inspired by Rick and Daryll from The Walking Dead.

Meatshield

I love how easy the Frostgrave sets mix and match. I just wish I also had the Barbarians, the as of yet unreleased Female Soldiers, as well as all those Gripping Beast plastics while I was assembling. Alas, you can't have it all...

Another Archer

Swordguy

Thief

Other Thief and Apothecary

Templar and Barbarian

And their back

While the Soldier set kind of lacks different heads, they ARE very characterful!

Tracker

Thug

I am currently working on my first Frostgrave ruin. I am quite satisfied with it so far. I will post some work in progress pics soon.

I have a tendency of starting scenery projects, then finding out later that it is not quite what I wanted. Fortunately, by then it is pretty much a table full, so I can still be content. Let's see how far I can take this one.

Which reminds me, I should take some pics at my FLGS, where my "regular" fantasy scenery is currently stalled.

Thank you guys!

Personally, I am not a huge fan of my own painting style, but it is the best I can accomplish.
If it were me, I would be able to paint more like Blasphemia

and Cubs
Link here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=109712.0

Their paintwork has a certain sepia old photograph from the 1800's feel to them which I love and aspire to. Alas, I am still content with what I do, even if it is not what I aspire to.

Anyways, some creatures maybe?

My humor is... terrible... And now I am going to edit its name because it is just stupid...

You guys will be in for a treat though. I managed to recover about 100 pics of my Mordheim models, which I thought were gone. They will be re-uploaded soon!

So, I built this dungeon for Frostgrave, but also for any other fantasy skirmish or RPG game.

I use this special stuff that I haven't seen other people use much. It looks like this:

This is the product I have used for this: https://www . macleanproducts . nl/comfort-super-5mm-0-59mx0-79m-9-79m

Perhaps you can order it yourself, not sure if they ship internationally. It is much better than that blueboard stuff, cheaper too!

This is what it looked like at first. The white stuff is the regular cheap foam.

Layout unintentional, though it does make for a nice Weird War II bunker, I suppose...

Later on I decidd that the large black parts looked strange, so I gave them a "dirt" treatment.

Looks nice, no?

I also made bigger rooms with removable walls, so I could either choose to close them or make entrances.

I also once made a larger cavern system, and through pure luck they were the same height, so I made a connector piece.

Peekaboo

Spooky stuff

Dead stuff

You can find several more pictures here: https://imgur.com/a/KJLbsCr

Hey, it's Daniel36! :) Hullo. What a nice project. The Frostgrave minis look really neat, but I'm really looking forward to how the dungeon turns out. Kudos for taking on such a project; it looks very very promising already.

Oh, and screw Photobucket. There's this workaround for forums and such still showing the photo you uploaded, but still - screw Photobucket.
Title: Re: The Daniel36 Chronicles - A Tale of Fantasy Adventures
Post by: Daniel36 on October 17, 2018, 11:06:44 AM
Thank you Sunjester! And hello there Sigur! Long time!

Currently, the dungeon is more or less finished. I have enough tiles to make it playable, everything I have is fully painted and I need to get me new pieces of MDF and foam to continue, and I currently lack the will to continue building pieces for it.

That doesn't mean that I am abandoning scenery building, it just means the next pieces will not be dungeons.

Right now I am building a snowy ruin for a "standard" Frostgrave table and the plan is to have enough pieces to get a table's worth. I am even taking pics of the process so I can share them here.

In the meantime, some pictures of my Mordheim models. They will be presented to you semi-randomly, as I do not have the heart to sift through 94 images in order to give a coherent story. Luckily, most of these file names associated with their warband or somesuch, so there will be SOME coherence... I am rambling, picture time!

Let's start of with an iconic model. Unfortunately, the Dark Elves were painted by me for a friend, so I no longer possess them. Maybe I can buy them off of him.

Reiklanders which are WAY too colourful for me, but I simply lacked the skills to paint them more subdued.

At least I have a Reikland gang. Not the original models, but those cost a lot of money.

I chose the Altdorf colour scheme, though now I am wondering if these colours were already Altdorfian during the Mordheim era... At least none of my models are wearing Karl Franz iconography.

I probably finished painting the cupboard at the same time... No idea why else I would put it in the background...

Beastmen, again painted for a friend. Maybe I can buy them off of him as well, since he quit playing...

Awesome models

Awesome

Even the plastics look awesome!

Extremely detailed shield design *cough cough*

Another icon, Bertha... Again this was painted for (yet another) friend, who luckily got her in a large Sisters of Sigmar lot. Though, this time, I have my own Bertha model as well, which I got in a trade... That one still needs to be painted though.

Uhh... her back...

Well, that's it for now! More later!

Cold Hounds or something for the Dark Elf faction

Originally a somewhat limited edition High Elf model, a shield swap turned him Dark. The hand was rather large but whatevz, the shield design is awesome!

See?

I had a lot of fun painting him

The entire gang was actually a lot of fun to paint!

Just enough variety not to get annoying

Do you believe in love after love? I very much dislike this model, but I decided I still wanted to Chér her with you... *wink wink*

Spirit

I used this guy for a mercenary... Not sure what they were called in Mordheim again, but any warband could hire him...

Johann the Knife - Found this guy in a super cheap lot of models, together with a relatively rare Witch Hunter model. Cost per model? 1 Euro!

Had this model for ages. Replaced his staff for two axes and his fave with a zombie head, and now it is a Darksoul for a warband I no longer have... OR a random encounter.

Marienburg warband!! Yeey!!

Somewhat unsafe for work picture...

Halfling Cook and my Pirate Leader!

Thanks!

More on the way:

I use this Fenbeast as a Chaos Spawn...

I have recently rebased this fella to be included in a Necromunda warband. I kind of regret having done that, as this guy is responsible for some very memorable moments in our Mordheim Campaigns.

And his disgusting back

Random pic of one of my Pirates

While these are obviously the old Ghoul models, I made them into Possessed Darksouls, as they seemed to fit that bill quite well. One walks around with a lump of Wyrdstone, haha.

Shake that booty!

I constantly forget the make of these models, but they were given to me for free and I loved them so much and decided they were excellent Tzeentchian Cultists.

A more or less scratchbuild Possessed model for one of those guys that you can buy mutations. This one has a scorpion tail!

Not my best conversion hahaha...

One last pirate, for good measure!

So glad I own a large Sisters warband.

One of my friends also has one. His are off white with old green. We gave them matching warband names... Uninteresting information, I know!

Not sure why I decided to give the shield a different colour, but here you go...

(http://i.imgur.com/IzTgAc5.jpg) (https://imgur.com/IzTgAc5)
The entire warband, I think. I am not proud of the blind girl conversion, but fortunately I have a very good replacement model for it, once I get back into Mordheim.

Them pesky Skeletons!

Now, I am glad I don't live in Australia, where spiders apparently grow the size of our heads, but every now and again we do get cool looking ones. This one has an evil red grin on his back so I put my skeleton next to him... Who will win?

Table made from a door

It just adds so much character to a room...

Next up, Witches, Warlocks and those who hunt them

Your painting style is effective, the minis look really good in the varying terrain. Do you play on such terrain too? Would be really cool!  ;)

Thanks guys!

I think you will like the next batch, Anselm van Helsing!

First up, a Witch conversion of sorts, for Mordheim.

And a warlock with some OSL thrown in for good measure. Not the best, but it works well enough.

And the leader of those that hunt them.

One of the models I got in the same lot as Johann the Knife. I was very lucky.

And now for a few pics of my OSL tryout.

And more OSL on my Priest.

Now, while the OSL on the Witch Hunter wsa somewhat difficult, OSL on silver coloured armour is easy. Just drybrush gold over it.

The hands were harder to do.

Two of my Flagellants

And a very fun little kitbash

He is quite full of bits

See? :D

I may at one point redo all the bases to round ones.

Thank you! There is more to come. I am trying to spread out posting all of the pics I have so far, so it gives me some time to take new pics too. Some of these pictures are several years old, but they were lost in the Great Photobucket Betrayal.

To round out my Mordheim Model Collection (or at least, what I took pics of, not sure if I have any more)

Some Zombies! Because every game needs Zombies!!

Probably the most expensive zombie in the history of miniature zombies. But he looks cool!!

Possibly the cheapest zombie in the history of miniature zombies. But it looks cool as well!

I LOATHE the GW Zombies, and they had some serious balls when they repackaged it AGAIN for Age of Sigmar, but whatever... I gave them my best, and at least they sort of fit the Mordheim aesthetic.

The hands... serioulsy GW, shame on you!

At least you could go nuts on the eyes.

Well, what else was I gonna do with those tombstones?

Too much detail for a zombie...

I quite like how the blunt trauma to the skull worked out on this guy, so here is a better view

And thus concludes the zombie infestation, at least for Mordheim.

Now that I have shown all of my Mordheim models, it is time for my a couple of scenery shots.

A Temple of Sigmar

While the outside is kind of boring, I am quite proud of the floor plan on the inside

Some cute details

At one point, I was going to build a modular Mordheim city on 20 cm by 20 cm MDF pieces. This here was one of those pieces. I ended up abandoning it because 20 by 20 was too small. I am reconsidering my approach now that I have some more experience in building under my belt. I think the fountain is from Thomarillion, but I am not certain.

A Ziterdes ruin. I have no regrets buying so much Ziterdes. It is a shame they abandoned many of their older products, as they were awesome!!

Such as these amazing city walls. They made new ones but they are just not as pretty. My only regret is not buying the ruined "end" pieces. I might make my own soon so my walls don't suddenly "stop".

Oh yeah, these are my Wyrdstone counters. They were silver Christmas decoration pebbles inked with green. Super simple!!

Next time I will show some in-game Mordheim pics of my favourite moments! :)

And now, my favourite part of the hobby. Taking atmospheric pictures of our battles to forever make us remember the awesome things the post-battle sequences let befall upon our hapless adventurers.

Marienburg, reporting for duty. This picture is really, really old. The scenery in this picture doesn't belong to me. We had fun times in these parts of Mordheim.

My Witch Hunters, furiously defending their location. Now, most of the scenery in the following batch of pictures does belong to me.

My leader was, at one point, captured and sent to fight in a gladiator battle. I think he won, but he did lose all of his belongings.

All seemed quiet, but death was about to rain upon the Shrine of Sigmar.

Though belonging to the same faith, the Witch Hunters branded the Sisters of Sigmar heretics, and thus had to be eliminated.

Not even the table was safe.

Wishing to suffer no more casualties, the Sisters had to run.

Nearby ruins become infested by the Undead.

But a gang of Pirates would have none of that. Little did they know they would face off against one of the most bloodthirsty vampires to walk the ruins of Mordheim.

Fortunately for Norton the Pirate Dwarf, he was somewhere else.

Snipers!

This was an awesome 5 player battle, where a dragon was central for the scenario. These guys, snipering from up high, managed to kill the dragon before he even had a chance to do anything. They then proceeded to snipe basically everyone. Awesome battle though.

Another moment to never forget. My Priest was taken out of action because of a Spawn that entered the field right behind me. When rolling for injuries, he ended up dead, naturally meaning the Spawn ate the Priest whole.

Some beautiful (and gruesome) figures there.

Let there be zombies!

My favourite is the Empire General gnawing on intestines and soaked in blood. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Great figures and terrain with grit and grime.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

I made a Frostgrave ruin.

This here is how I built a standard scenery piece. It was a test piece, but I think it turned out well.

I started with a basic outline of the floor. It was going to be raised a bit.

Next I made the outlines for the walls. Now, I don't like foamcore for stone ruins, but this was going to be the middle part of three pieces, the other two were going to be of the handy foam I also used in my dungeon build.

As you can see here. One thing I ALWAYS dislike about otherwise good looking commercial ruined buildings is that they are too thin. I wanted my walls to actually look like thick walls. These are roughly 1,5 cm thick this way.

It also makes it easy to "dryfit" your scenery as it won't fall over, plus the foamcore... core... makes it very sturdy.

Looks about right for a standard piece of scenery.

Time to draw in the wall. This stuff is perfect for it, as it doesn't damage very quickly but is still easy to apply effects to. An aluminium ball will give me the rocky texture I want.

In hindsight, I could've made the lines a bit more straight, as up close it looks kind of fake, but hey, it was a test piece so there you have it, lesson learned.

It is starting to take shape. Sure, the edges are a bit wonky, but whatever...

At first I was going to cut out the middle and replace it with the grey stuff, but it turned out removing the paper would give me what I was after as well. It ended up looking good enough.

Almost there!

Here you can see how I used additional pieces of foamcore to raise the building up and also give the illusion of snow building up against the sides.

Some bark pieces for exposed rock pieces, lots of PVA glue and simple sand. This part took a while.

Dirt cheap, simple black and white acrylic paint for the ruins, and just the white paint for the snow. It cost nothing and it looks absolutely fantastic, if I may say so myself.

My only gripe right now is that the snow doesn't go high enough against the walls, so I need a solution for that which won't require 400 layers of PVA glue.

Thanks for watching!
