Title: The Completionist's Guide to Frostgrave Scenery
Post by: Daniel36 on October 15, 2018, 08:40:16 PM
-Last Update:08-09-23
-Previous Update: 01-04-19

Welcome weary traveler! If you came upon this thread through Google, there is a 2nd edition of this thread now available here: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=142647.0

Old edition:
What I want to do is have very short descriptions of the specific type of scenery (aside from the regular ruins) needed for each particular scenario. Then, if there is either a product out there or a very good tutorial, perhaps a thread started by someone here or maybe even some inspirational pictures to get you started, then I will add links below that.

Let's make this a community effort so if you have anything to add, just add a comment and I will see to it that it gets added to the list.

Also, if you have built any of the scenic pieces, please do share pics here!!

(Obviously, if the mods dislike this idea for whatever reason, feel free to delete)

MAIN RULEBOOK - 2ND EDITION
The first edition has half of the scenarios listed here, but it felt unnecessary to keep that list
------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1 - The Well of Dreams and Sorrows
- A well

Product - http://adrianswalls.co.uk/epages/0208e13d-a967-46c1-ba72-2df35cc0f9a6.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/0208e13d-a967-46c1-ba72-2df35cc0f9a6/Products/FCB-07

I think this thread is a great idea. I'll grab my rulebook and read the scenarios carefully again. Maybe i can have a try.

Thanks! I am currently building a small ruin, and I am hopefully getting some new material later today with which I can build the canal banks for the Battle on the River, which will be an interesting thing to build and share pictures of.

My idea is to try the silent tower but that might be a too tough nut,  for a wannabe terrain maker, like me. But i sketch a plan first and then hope i can do it.

If I can offer a very unhelpful tip as a slightly more advanced terrain maker, is don't overthink it nor underthink it.

The most important part in the planning on a scenery project is your choice of material, as that will dictate what you can achieve and more importantly how you can achieve it.

I don't think the silent tower is extremely difficult, just rather large. By far the most important decision is what material you will use.

These for example should make your life real easy, while not being overly expensive: http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/104-model-bricks

I wouldn't use it for a straight wall section, as I can make those easier and cheaper and still good looking enough, but these could be quite high on my list for a round tower.

10" diameter is quite big for a piece of homebuilt terrain, but depending on where you live you might be able to get heavy cardboard tubes that size at a building supply store - they are used as forms for pouring concrete footings.

Thanks guys for your tips and ideas. My material is the blue styrofoam with 20 mm thickness.
Well with 10" or 254 mm it will be big, that's true.

I have officially begun working on a huge piece of scenery for the scenario The Living Museum. Obviously will be usable for other scenarios as well, but it will be a 12" by 12" ruin with plenty of room in the middle for the 6 statues. I also finished a small piece of regular scenery today, I will be uploading pics of that tomorrow.

Anyone else working on scenery from the list? Anyone have a book that I don't have yet, to add to the list?

It's going to be a fun build from a gameplay point of view as well. Since it is built atop a "rock" of 5cm high, with only the stair on the front giving access, things like Leap will grant you a fun advantage.

This might be very helpful some day. I am fascinated by the maritime objects there - a floating ship and a lighthous in a building...

I started making a list for the Lost Colossus campaign, and I think I gave up at the second scenario because it has so many large and specific pieces that it's just completely impossible.

I don't make progress with the Silent Tower. Because i was busy. Maybe i should try something smaller for the Start.

Edit: I have the Maze of Malcor here. You want to add the Campaign Scenarios, daniel?

Thanks! Yeah, it can be helpful when you are stuck for ideas and here you can easily skim for scenery that also has a purpose.

I started making a list for the Lost Colossus campaign, and I think I gave up at the second scenario because it has so many large and specific pieces that it's just completely impossible.

Well, even if I DO make it to the end of the list and have every piece of scenery herewith listed, it'll probably take me a good few years, but it's a nice list to have for reference, if anything.

I don't make progress with the Silent Tower. Because i was busy. Maybe i should try something smaller for the Start.

Edit: I have the Maze of Malcor here. You want to add the Campaign Scenarios, daniel?

Starting small is probably a good idea! Especially since you are going to need more "basic" scenery pieces anyways, if you want a good filled table.

Yes, please do tell me what specific scenery the Maze of Malcor has! I probably won't get the book very soon, and it would be nice to have the list ready before that.

Ok i have to read it first. There 12 scenarios and aftermath. Well i'll do it tomorrow Daniel. I'm too tired today. Hope it's ok.
Title: Stone huts
Post by: gnomehome on October 21, 2018, 07:59:03 AM
Here is my version of the stone huts. A very quick build - rather self explanatory

Materials needed

- Cardboard tube
- MDF (for the bases)
- your choice of base texturing mix
- textured paint (inside of the hut)
- air draying clay (for the outside)

Cut the carboard tube to the desired height, add a doorway.

Roll out a thin layer of air-drying clay, texture it with one of the many  "stamping tools" that are available these days. Press the textured slab of clay to the outside, cut of excess, rework the texture a bit where there's an overlap.  Alternatively add the clay to the tube first and apply texture tool later. Inscribing the texture manually will also work when there's no stamping tool in you collection.

Glue onto the MDF-base and paint the inside with textured paint and texture the base.

Let dry and paint.

I finished construction in a couple of hours (2-3 max. I think) . Not the greatest looking terrain, but serviceable.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

#3 - The Silent Tower
- A ruined tower, at least 10" in diameter, at least three stories high
- Two smaller ruined buildings with walkways running from their top to either the first or second floor of the tower

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I interpreted this differently, I thought the height should at least be 10" I'm not a native speaker so maybe the 10" refers to the diameter - this is the exact phrasing in the rulebook.

A ruined tower, at least 10” and 3 stories high, should be placed in the centre of the board.

Yeah, I am editing it right now. And of course it is okay Tungdil, you don't have to do anything you don't have the energy or time for.

Thanks for all the help anyways, and Gnomehome, those are some excellent huts!! I love them!

I read it again and try to shorten the Text. Because i can't write down the whole book here.
Title: Re: The Completionist's Guide to Frostgrave Scenery
Post by: Daniel36 on October 21, 2018, 09:49:04 AM
Yeah, you don't have to type over the entire book, just the basics of the scenery requirements.

Now, I did look at Malcor in a Youtube book review, and I do know that the scenery requirements are a lot more detailed than they were in the other books, so I won't hold it against you if you have to take your time.

Actually, I remember having written down some of the scenery requirements as I paused the video. I might already have some of them ready. I will have to take a look where I wrote those down.

Edit: Found them. I have the scenery requirements for Scenarios 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

I will make a headstart, but if you see something that is wrong, let me know.

It's more text, that's true. But it's good that you have the Video. You can check up what i write down here, later. Because i don't wan't to spread rubbish.

Edit: Ok i look at scenarios 1,5,7,11 and 12 first.

I figured I might as well use this thread to show off my Frostgrave scenery as well!

This here is how I built a standard scenery piece. It was a test piece, but I think it turned out well.

I started with a basic outline of the floor. It was going to be raised a bit.

Next I made the outlines for the walls. Now, I don't like foamcore for stone ruins, but this was going to be the middle part of three pieces, the other two were going to be of the handy foam I also used in my dungeon build.

As you can see here. One thing I ALWAYS dislike about otherwise good looking commercial ruined buildings is that they are too thin. I wanted my walls to actually look like thick walls. These are roughly 1,5 cm thick this way.

It also makes it easy to "dryfit" your scenery as it won't fall over, plus the foamcore... core... makes it very sturdy.

Looks about right for a standard piece of scenery.

Time to draw in the wall. This stuff is perfect for it, as it doesn't damage very quickly but is still easy to apply effects to. An aluminium ball will give me the rocky texture I want.

In hindsight, I could've made the lines a bit more straight, as up close it looks kind of fake, but hey, it was a test piece so there you have it, lesson learned.

It is starting to take shape. Sure, the edges are a bit wonky, but whatever...

At first I was going to cut out the middle and replace it with the grey stuff, but it turned out removing the paper would give me what I was after as well. It ended up looking good enough.

Almost there!

Here you can see how I used additional pieces of foamcore to raise the building up and also give the illusion of snow building up against the sides.

Some bark pieces for exposed rock pieces, lots of PVA glue and simple sand. This part took a while.

Dirt cheap, simple black and white acrylic paint for the ruins, and just the white paint for the snow. It cost nothing and it looks absolutely fantastic, if I may say so myself.

My only gripe right now is that the snow doesn't go high enough against the walls, so I need a solution for that which won't require 400 layers of PVA glue.

It's a cool looking ruined house. It turns out very well and the snow adds the Frostgrave feeling realy good.

Question about the Alu Ball. You rub it over the Wall?

Yes, I press pretty hard. Works even better on bluefoam, but then bluefoam also damages more easily.

This is a great idea! I have been thinking about something like this myself. I will get some pics together and share what I have created too. Thank you.

Yes, please do! If you like, add them in this thread. That way people can get inspiration from different people all in one thread.

I came across a preview page of one of the Spellcaster Magazines, for the dragon scenario. It had the scenery requirements in there, so I updated the list to include this scenario's requirements.

Really like your list! I have the Ghost Archipelago book, I may go through and make a terrain plan list now too. And for Lost Colossus when it arrives in the mail.

Now that I am the proud owner of the book The Maze of Malcor, I was able to add the flavour text scenery ideas to the list, so the list is now updated.

If you have any pictures of your work you want to share, please do! :)

Thanks for keeping and updatng the list. It's very useful, especially when I don't have the books on me.

Thanks! I kind of like to try and get most of the "official" scenic pieces one day, so this list is handy for me, and I might as well share it with others, right?

Plus this way at least I still do something hobby related, as right now I am not really painting or playing much of anything.

My gaming is pretty stagnant at the moment too, alas.
I try to follow a different path and scratchbuild as much scenery as I can for as little cost as possible  ;D

Oh yeah, I mean that too, scratchbuilt,  but official in the sense of whatever the scenarios ask, as in the "right" flavour.

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=116046.0 - This here museum thread has sparked some newfound enthusiasm, so I added them to the list in one of the Malcor scenarios.

As of myself, I haven't had a lot of time to do much with my hobby as of late, with life and other endeavours being in the way. Who knows I will be able to pick it up again in a few months time.

In the meantime, I continue to check the forum here for possible additions to the list.

I have this thread bookmark because I eventually plan on trying to make the various scenery. Good job in collecting it all in one place. Lately my focus has been on making stuff for Rangers of Shadowdeep and more general odds and ends. Once I get more of it done I'll be back at the Frostgrave scenery. It'll work for other games and scenarios too.

Can anyone point me to a miniatures line that has Statues or give me some ideas for some cool figures I can bronze or granite paint into statues?

I have searched some forums and some people have resin cast some actual statues but nobody ever responded to where they got the statues.  Over at Hirst Arts there are some excellent pictures of statues but again no response as to where they were sourced.

Ideas welcome.

I just used any minis I had no use for. I roughed them up a bit and chopped off the odd limb and then painted them a stoney colour. You could get some cheapsh minis from the Reaper Bones line maybe.

For larger statues I used some Reaper Bones minis and a Mantic Elohim as statues. I was thinking of doing the same thing like jp1885 with man sized extras too but haven't got around to it yet.
