As a means to get through the small mountain of Oldhammer miniatures, I decided to mix my two favoutire things - Oldhammer figures and Mordheim!
Thus the city of Oldenheim was born, a place where miniatures from the 1980s (with a few exceptions as long as they are OOP) can fight and delve for treasure without fear of being too small or not detailed enough when attacked by a more modern plastic warrior.
In Oldenheim, the ruins of the Golden Citadel look down on the city and its 80's night every night...
To start with I have been working on a Carroburg Warband, always best to start with some humans before moving on too other things. The Warband of Gunther Drakos so far...

I like this guys very much. Really nice minis with a great paint job. Interesting choice of colours, too.
-
I think you've made those minis look just fine - they'd stand with any new stuff (well, maybe not in height... ;) )
without fear of being too small or not detailed enough when attacked by a more modern plastic warrior.
lol
-
Good show. 8) Cue the Banshees!
-
Great painting of great minis!
and its 80's night every night...
Cue disco music and shadowy figures with big hair and neon wristbands. lol
-
So a little appraisal as to where I am to date with the various Warbands intended for Oldenheim...
Probably the nearest to completion are the Norse Raider Warband of Harald Sitric, a long time menace to Oldenheim from before the days of the towns destruction...
Next is another local warband - a group of Ostlanders, with an Ogre Mercenary in tow...
Then we have the main opposition to explorers and adventurers - The Warbands composed of the followers of the Chaos Gods...

I feel like this should be a proper game! Oldenheim sounds like a game I would totally play!
-
Great selection of vintage lead and wonderful brushwork. Looking forwards to more news from the forsaken city of Oldenheim!
-
Great idea, lovely minis and painting, pretty cool.
Are you using any mods for Mordheim?
The Sommerlund Guard Captain is my fave :)
-
I like the ogre mercenary. It's a cool figure.
-
Very cool.
-
Nice. I used to have that devil. I always wanted that snakey chaos guy too.
-
Really cool. I too have a couple of those minis. They look great painted. Inspiring.
-
These are lovely. I really enjoy the mix of figures combined with your lovely painting. Those Ostlanders are the stand-out figures for me though!
-
Thank you chaps.
Another warband that is well on the way to be finished are the Goblin Raiders of Mama Zog. One of the first Citadel boxsets that I bought back in 1984 was the SS4 Goblin Raiding Party set and I've always had a fondness for that set and the associated early solid based Goblins from the C12 and C13 ranges. So with that in mind, one warband I wanted to feature (especially as my Dwarf Army always likes new opposition too) was one that was entirely composed of Goblins!
So the Goblin Raiders of Mama Zog was born...

So much goodness here.
-
Oldenheim also needs some ‘Hired Swords’ that suit the theme…
This one may not be that much use!

The first champion added to the Carroburg Warband for Oldenheim - An Imperial Pistolier released in August 1987 and sculpted by Aly Morrison...

Slowly getting there, the Captain, the first Champion and Youngblood are done, plus one of the Swordsmen and two of the Marksmen!

The imperial pistolier is a fantastic figure.
The paint job is terrific.
-
Lovely stuff Piers! Your old Lichemaster thread was what kicked off my own "oldhammer renaissance" some 10 years ago. Since then I've dreamed about doing something like this. Right nice!
-
phreedh...
Must get the Undead out for some photos... Did the last zombie a while ago.
Tracking down old Undead isn't as easy at it was... :'(
-
Wow, you've made a collection of really beautiful figures. Excellent brushwork, sense of style and color, figure choice. :o :-*
-
What a stunning collection of wonderful old skool goodness, all coloured-in to a seriously good standard.
What is not to like?
:-* :-* :-*
-
wow, cool painting, didnt know you had that many warbands painted up
-
Great painting on some lovely old skool minis, good work. It's always nice to see models from yesteryear given some love.

Spent the afternoon sorting through boxes for more suitable types to base up and undercoat for Oldenheim... Managed to sort a few from the Chaos and Human Lead Mines, but still need to venture deeper into the mines tomorrow to sort out more Norse and Greenskins...
Human selection...
Naughty Chaos types...
Not sure they will all get done, but it's a lot easier to find stuff now. Though the trip to the mines has raised more questions...
How do I get a Chaos Centaur warband into the narrative?
-
How to get a Chaos Centaur warband into the narrative?
Why, good sir, have you been drinking too much in the tavern again? I really shouldn't have to remind you of the Black Forest just east of our fair town of Oldenheim, now should I?
Aye, the Black Forest, a place where evil dwells. If only they would stay there. No, the dark creatures have decided that they, too, deserve the riches our Golden Citadel has to offer us.
-
Not the Black Forest... Its too dangerous in there.
Granted the rewards are great, so they say, but that old Wizards Tower and the herds of Beastmen make it a dangerous place...
Just stop at the Coaching Inn on the Oldenheim Road... far safer...
-
Aye, and if it only were the Beastmen, but no... Travel deep enough and you will find the dreadful giant spiders. Not to mention the Forest Goblin tribe that calls the forest its home... Lucky for us they are frightened of us when alone...
Yet, they rarely travel alone, now don't they?
-
*Looks in box for giant spiders...*

The port town of Oldenheim sits across the junction of several trade routes of the Empire, both by road and by sea. When the invasion from the northlands hit the city it was partly ruined during the siege and then partly occupied by the Chaos forces. But the invaders were held in the eastern edge of the city when the seven bridges over the Tessel were brought down by the last survivors of the City Guard. In trying to bypass the Tessel outside the city, the invaders split force was brought to battle by a combined force of men, dwarfs and elves – Known as the Grand Alliance in memory of a former allied army that had defeated the Orcish army of King F’yarr many years before. Once the force outside had been driven off and routed, the forces of the Alliance began to invest the remaining invaders in the city. After four months of fighting, the entire city of Oldenheim was declared liberated.
Or so they said…
But the scars of ruined and razed buildings are not the only reminders of the short war. Now, a few months after the fighting has ceased, the work begins to reclaim and rebuild the city. But the East Quarter, once the bustling commercial heart of the city and home to both financial and goods trading houses, remains a ruined maze of buildings and strange happenings. With the casualties sustained by the City Guard and Alliance troops in the fighting, the Guildmasters of the city have begun offering high rewards to volunteer warbands who are brave, or some say stupid, enough to enter into the ruins and recover both property and treasure as well as clear out the remaining vestiges of the chaos army that had descended from the north.
But the fragile state of security in the region is cause for concern. Not only do small groups of Chaos followers remain at large within the city ruins, but some from the enemy’s field army sought refuge in the Black Forest which straddles several nearby roads and caravan routes. The forest has always been a place of dread and darkness, and in recent months this has grown ten-fold. The same Guildmasters are now recruiting those warbands to also guard caravans or even venture into the forest to eliminate threats. The bounty paid for the heads of Chaos followers can be lucrative, if a sometimes fatal way of making a living.
But the threats don’t stop there. From Norsca the war also brought an increase in raids from the Norse tribes near to the area. While not all are followers of the Dark Gods, all the Norse see an opportunity for pillage and plunder when it arises. The chaos and confusions has also seen the Goblin tribes of the Black Forest and the Barrow Hills become more confident in raiding and striking at the city itself at times. The lure of treasure, goods and slaves is high for all… even some of the hired warbands are not adverse to do some of their own pillaging and treasure seeking and it has become common place to see fights occur between the hired Guild warbands, with some of these feuds even spreading into the largely undamaged Western Quarter of the city.
To say the war and invasion was over might have sounded like a victory call to those far away in their castles and cities, but to those in Oldenheim the war seemed far from over.
Excerpt from A History of the Lost Cities of the Old World by Franz Stienhager quoting the report of Guildmarshal Klaus von Uberich on the current state of Oldenheim when he visited the city on behalf of the Moneylenders Guild.

I am enjoying seeing these oldtimers getting an outing.
-
That's a cracking selection of Old Lead there.

Back to Carroburg with three more 80s veterans...

Two more arrivals in Oldenheim...
First up is Maximillian the Brave from the F2 Fighters range in Spring 1987. He will be taking the role of the second champion in the Carroburg Warband and his arrival brings the warband to its starting allocation and is thus complete... For now.
Next we start a new warband using The Moon Duke taken from the 1986 boxed set BC7 - Heroic Fighters of Known World. He will be the Captain of a new warband composed of soldiers drawn from the Deathjacks Regiment who are still serving in the city on clean up duties, though some would say that the mission happily dovetails with the regiments love of looting...
Captain Karl Mond - 2nd Company, The Deathjacks;

very nicely painted
-
Excellent new additions - also very much enjoying the lore you are weaving around the minis: inspiring stuff!
-
Lovely to see these, thanks
-
Excellent thread, love it. :)
-
The Carroburg Warband is amazing.
Like their colours very much.
-
I love this thread on so many levels:
1) Oldhammer
2) Mordheim
3) Paintjobs
I aspire to what you are doing here, beautiful work!
:)
What paints do you typically use and is it standard base/wash/highlight?
-
What paints do you typically use and is it standard base/wash/highlight?
I use a selection of GW paints, Foundry and Vallejo Model Colour. Inks and washes are solely GW ones with the use of AK and Mig Production enamel filters on some models.
I tend to use a base colour, with a wash and then several highlights following reapplication of the base colour. On occasion I then reshade with inks, as I did with the Moon Duke to accentuate the folds in the cloak which lost a little depth as they were highlighted.
-
This is an amazing log. Its so cool to see what you can do with old minis. Great stuff!
-
The first champion for the Deathjack warband… Julius – the warbands scout, guide and forager. The old man of the group and with the reputation of being able to source anything required... no matter what.

More great work. I have a couple of C07 Rangers waiting to be primed at the moment - the Forester and Gamekeeper. Some classic sculpts from the Perry twins!

Such is the bitter irony of the streets of Oldenheim...

a cool game and look forward to the next one

Classic Mordheim! I'd rather roll well on injuries in the after-game sequence than win the scenario!

Nice animated zombies in those pics, ironically. Mantic?

yes Mantic zombies, you can get a fair few different poses from the small sprue you get !

Lovely paint jobs for some reason my age addled brain wants to say that these four where originally Joe Dever Lonewolf Giaks?

So cool, so nostalgic.
There's a few new manufacturers now targeting the Giaks for a remake.

Back again with the start of another Chaos Unit...
As my Chaos Army is loosely based on a selection of cards from the 'Chaos Marauders' game, one of the units will be Chaos Dwarfs and Goblins!
Scarsol Smashskul, from the initial C16 Chaos Dwarf release during 85/86 by the Perry Twins has seen his armour rust up in the 35 years or so waiting to be painted... is seen here with Blimblam Blimblamblamblom one of the 1987 C12 Goblin Javelinmen... Get the feeling they were running low of naming ideas at that point.

Chaos army so far...

Lovely additions since I last checked in.
Those are proper Chaos Dwarves, unlike the strange chaps that wear chimneys on their heads.
AND they look proper gorgeous!
:-* :-*
Gotta love those two Goblin heroes too, so full of character.
:-*
-
That is a great looking army.
-
These look fantastic! While the modern miniatures are technically well done, there is just a charm to the older figures that has been lost over the ages. Glad to see new life put into these.
Chris

Excellent paintjob, Piers. Although I think that you wouldn't have picked that palette back in 1987. Those paints were much brighter back in the day, particularly with elves… I remember pink and blue horrors - LITERALLY!!! lol
-
Lovely additions, that is one of my favourite Orcs with his arms crossed, but.....
....that face on the Elf is amazing!!!
:-* :-*
-
This thread is a non stop ride from glorious to stupendous. You've made my inner child very happy.

Agreed (and a little jealous, the inner child that is as a grow man I feel no jealousy... ;) )

Been too busy with work this lockdown to do much, but finally painted a model this year. I did however acquire a large box of Oldhammer Citadel figures from my neighbour... lockdowns are weird in rural Ireland like that.
Anyway...

One of the Khorne Chaos Champions - Gurni Iron Arm - from 1988 based on an illustration in the Realms of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness book. He has a sword and steam powered mace fist... cos... well its chaos init...
-
Wow the metal looks fantastic, almost a hammered appearance.
-
Brilliant painting. The old orcs and elf are spot on.

Some of my favorite Dwarf figures
you have done an amazing job on them :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Those dwarves are something special
-
Back in 1987 the generic Elf1 range was released, sculpted by Aly Morrison and Jes Goodwin, it had a certain glam rock feel to it... or as I call it - The Bowie Years.

Great work :-*

Added another model to the slowly growing Norse warband and this time its Gladius from the box set ‘Heroic Fighters of the Known World’ from 1986.
This is the original version of Gladius before the model was revised to cast easier.
After the initial releases the set was revised to make the casting process easier and less prone to failure. Gladius was turned slightly and had his head moved to be in line with his body for easier casting. I painted the second version for my mates collection...

WONDERFUL STUFF! So many of your beautifully painted treasures are new to me; the older Citadels were not all that common in my old hobby haunt. All are VERY WELL DONE!

Superb additions, as we have all come to expect by now.
Well really amazes me is the character you manage to get in those faces, the Dwarf above being a stunning example of this.
:-* :-*
-
it's all great, but I love those two 'warbands' a bit higher up (previous page).
-
First is one of the models from BC5 Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion boxset and its Elric of Melnibone carrying Stormbringer and the Chaos Shield…

Old as they may be, the BEAUTIFULLY painted members of the Thieves' Guild are all new miniatures to me. It brings home how few of the older Citadel miniatures ever made an appearance in my then local hobby store. OUTSTANDING WORK!

Truly were the Golden Years, weren't they
Outstanding thread.

That Gimli is stunning!
:-* :-*
I had not realised just how detailed that figure is until you had coloured him in so well.
A great sculpt, who will work really well in his new role.
:)
-
Continually great work!

Love that figure :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Dwarf Supply Train... made up using the Adventurers Pony from BC1, two converted Citadel War of the Roses horses and the Mounted Gimli along with three Dwarfs on foot including Borinn Fimbull from the Orcs Drift campaign, a C06 veteran from 1985 and then two Dwarf adventurers/miners from 1987.

Nice work.
Of course you can also get loads of baggage ponies etc from Foundry, and I think one of them is the old citadel one you've painted
All the best.
-
What a lovely look, beautiful paintjob!
-
Super cool
-
Wanted something different to do so painted up a rescue job.
This beaten up F9 Feudal Men-at-Arms was missing his slotta tab, needed paint stripping and had to have some cutting a reshaping done to remove the mess made when the shield stud had been removed.
But since his release in July 1986, ‘Dieter’ and many of the Feudal range, are now available from Wargames Foundry.

Blue and yellow is a great combo, one of my favourites.

-
Wow great looking cultists and striking color scheme.
-
I've often struggled to understand why Imperial citizens might want to join a Chaos cult, but I think I'd join that cult if I could look that cool.
-
Love 'em. I especially like the shield design.
-
I've often struggled to understand why Imperial citizens might want to join a Chaos cult, but I think I'd join that cult if I could look that cool.
They also have punch and pie at all the meetings.
-
Have you done work on the faces?
Very nice :-* :-* :-*

Another C04 series Thief for the Thieves Guild of Oldenheim. This time its the sought after 'Grimwald' that featured in Terror of the Lichemaster as a named character.

Perhaps my favourite ever figure sculpted by the Perry Twins for Citadel.
1984 Sir John Tyrweld, leader of the Knights of Origo, one of the original Regiment of Renown.

Stunning paint jobs :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I had some of these figures you are doing but I don't remember them being that good, must be your paint jobs that bring out the detail :-* :-* :-*

Not quite finished the Golem... but a work in progress seemed apt for him...

That's a superb pair! The flesh golem is splendid - and that face on the apothecary!
-
A Red Witch/Warlock... a very non gender specific GW wizard.
Clearly fron the Citadel Woke period. :D ;)

Nice painting on those miniatures. You have a great technique for flowing robes etc.
-
Some more Citadel Norse added to the rest...

Brilliant work, really bringing those pieces to life!
-
Excellent work :o :o
I love the Vikings, very inspiring!
-
More beautiful additions!
:-* :-*
You do know that you are asking for trouble having that many Norse all together like that?
I suggest you send a few to me to separate them and help keep the peace.
:D ;)
-
Your painting really makes those old Citadel figures "sing."
-
Back with another installment from the Oldhammer Mines...
This time, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly...
First is the good ‘Young Fighter’ from the 1985 BC1 Adventurers box set...
In Warhammer Fantasy they don’t come much more bad than the original ‘Lord Krell’.
This is his first incarnation as a pre-slotta model from 1984 in the C17 Series of Skeletons. He would rise to prominence in 1986 as the named Lord Krell in the Terror of the Lichemaster campaign pack.
Finally the ugly ‘Gotalot’ from the often overlooked 1985 C48 Gargoyle series by Aly Morrison. Want more of them… fancy a unit of stone gargoyles to cause panic and mayhem in Oldenheim.

Again excellent stuff, although the gargoyle just knicks it.
I agree, more of them please and I especially like the Ray Harryhausen vibe he gives :-*

First unit for my 2ed WFB Empire Army... this shows how all the random models completed for various Oldenheim warbands come together to form units for the army.
Gives a real rag tag and varied look to the units of men at arms this way and reminds of the old adverts with everything painted differently!
So... a unit of 20 Men at Arms, with hand weapons, light armour and shields;

Loving that orc! Something about that sculpt speaks to me...
And of course, as usual, the paint job is excellent again!

Superb additions all round!

Nice looking unit!
-
These units are spectacular!
Quite agree on the goblins - I think Kev Adams once said that even he prefers the Perry versions!
-
Well, after taking September off completely from painting, back to this year's Oldhammer count!

‘Maximillian’ another from the F9 Feudals in 1986 and the mid-level Female Fighter from ADD12 of the same year.

Amazing project (and painting!).

Beautiful work on those figures!

I've been following your progress on Facebook. I have to say your progress is quite impressive.

Eye candy 😍👌👌👌
-
That blackened metalwork looks amazing, I would have struggled not to keep adding rust effects and ultimately spoil it.
-
That's a wonderful collection you have there, V, and the PJ is just so.
I look onto myself and notice my taste for the miniatures of early days of the hobby is growing.
-
Takes me back to Wargames Illustrated magazines in the 80s where the Foundry add was the highlight. Beautiful.
-
I haven't commented on here before as it's obviously all brilliant. But just so you know, I think this is all brilliant. I'm a big Oldhammer fan, so there's so much to love about this thread.
-
Those are beautiful! I look forward to the updates in this thread, your beautiful paint jobs on these old figures are a treat.
-
So while 2022 was very Oldhammer focussed, its more WW2 this year,.but a few fantsy bits still cropping up.
Coming up first for 2023 will be a few models from the BC2 Monster Starter Set released in 1985.
First up... the Manic Hobgoblin Hero!

You’ve really brought out what an amazing miniature that always has been!
-
Great figures and superb painting.
And the project planner in me loves the counting approach - thinking about which range I’d like to apply that to this year lol
-
Amazing work as always!
-
Very old fella this one, and seems the mould on the left hand always failed, but as he is Fantasy Tribe Fighter FTF54 'Adventurer in Leather Armour' from 1982, that then moved into the C01 Fighters range in 1983 from Citadel... we will let him off the poorly moulded hand!

After so many more from this range, that seems overlooked to me as it contains some really stunning miniatures.
-
Fantastic work as always... I do enjoy seeing these old minis brought so vividly back to life - keep 'em coming.
-
lovely stuff.
-
Gorgeous painting as always
-
Not really doing much on this project in 2023, needed a bit of time off from it but have completed one of the old Citadel C26 Men-at-Arms with pole arm. This range was allegedly the best selling of all the ranges in the mid-80s and its still available with Foundry at present.
The range has tons of variants for each pose and it’s a great War of the Roses or late Medieval range. It was handy for any generic human force in fantasy as well as being popular with historical gamers…

Not much going on this year for Oldhammer but the occasional model, and here is the Ogre Champion from the 1985 BC2 Monster Starter Set…

That’s a great figure and I love your paint job! The skin tones you used work really well.
-
The paintwork in this thread continues to deliver. Awesome stuff.
-
Exceptional work as always, what a lovely model.
-
He’d be the size of a goblin these days! Looks great
-
Another C01 Fighter from 1984…

Excellent stuff, The ogre champ and the fighter in the turban particularly stand out for me, I wouldn't have noticed the fighters hand if you hadn't pointed it out, so great recovery painting.
Beautiful figs, keep them coming.
