Title: Clearco's Prehistoric Things
Post by: Clearco on October 19, 2018, 04:28:49 PM
Hi!
I got my copy of Palaeo Diet and its first expansions several months ago and I'm eager to play. Unfortunately, I didn't have any suitable miniatures on my collection and my hobby-budget is very low these times so I was struggling with the idea of doing my own miniatures, then thinking about using paper-models, then again thinking about doing very simple and tiny cartoonesque minis...so it went on and on inside of my head for months...until today! Today I decided to sculpt a mammoth in 15mm scale and it went way smoother as I had thought! So it's on  :D The good thing about this scale is that I'm way faster and that I can sculpt lots of huge beasts :) :)

While I was sculpting it I remember some 15mm tribesmen I had secretely sculpted last summer for a Darkest Africa setting and thought about converting some of them to be cavemen. So I can now very easily have figures aswell ;)

Enough talk! Here are some pictures. The mammoth is still wip, I still have to make more details and ad the fur but the 80% is done :) The naked and bald tribesmen are for size reference and will serve as a base for further converting (lots of furs and hair  ;D )

This is my first (almost) finished animal, besides some horses in 28mm I'm working on  ;)

Thanks Nic! I must say, I was totally inspired by your rules, I like them a lot  ;)

So, I have been slowly adding fur to the creature:

I wanted to sculpt some wolly rhinos aswell but now I only want to work on some rather bald animals after so much fur...  lol

Thank you a lot for the nice comments guys! :-)

I'd like to see the little beast produced but I'd need at least ca. 25 people interested in having one so I don't know if that's possible right now...I'll keep sculpting some animals and hope to arouse some interest so they can be produced :)

Anyway, I have finished the sculpt! At the end I have have hated sculpting so much fur  o_o

Are you going to cast in metal or resin?
Title: Re: Clearco's Prehistoric Things
Post by: Clearco on November 01, 2018, 10:02:30 AM
Thank you all for your replies and your interest!!  :) I'm really glad you like the sculpt!

I'm going to try to cast the one mammoth myself and make some conversions so I'd have 2 or 3 models before letting it be proffesionaly casted ;)

@HerbyF: I was thinking about resin because the miniature is relatively big and hence cost of material (metal) AND shipping (because of the weight) could be both a problem, but I'm open to suggestions :)

I hope to be able to show you these days another beast I'm working on  ;)
Title: Re: Clearco's Prehistoric Things
Post by: HerbyF on November 04, 2018, 02:29:21 AM
Good to hear that you plan to cast in resin. Metal would have made the shipping cost prohibitive.

Great! I'm glad resin would be welcome  ;)

By the way, I have been working on my first 15mm hunters: bow(wo)man, spearman and the crazy one carrying fire  :D

Thanks a lot, guys!

I'll try  ;)

I have made a bit of scenery. I tried to do it fast and easy and that's the result of my pleistocene landscape:

The hills:

The broken terrain (patches of bushes and a windy marsh)

The only thicket on my pleistocene half-steppe:

Thank you guys!
Yesterday I managed to make the first homemade resin casting of the mammoth and it turned rather well. The tail was missing (I will have to cast it separately) but it had nor mold lines (only a bit on the inner side of the legs but they aren't specially visible so...) neither bubbles so I'm pretty happy with the result  :D
I'm thinking about making the copies myself and skip the resin caster... ;)

Thank you a lot for the comments guys! :)

After a while playing on 15mm I felt like my minis lacked a bit of personality, so I decided to switch to 28mm. I have been buying animals for months and made several attempts to sculpt or convert figures for the hunters...

Now I'm sculpting some Neanderthals as a side project and I would like to show you how it is going.
That is the first figure. He stands 26,5mm to the eye when actually standing (roughly 1,65m in real life). The head seems bigger on the photo as in the reality, I think. It's still wip as I have to finish the hand and do some clothing (and eyelids!) but I think you get the idea:

It may be unfair, but my first impression was "Benny Andersson of Abba!"...  ::)
In fact he looks peferctly good to me. I would take him for a Neanderthaler.

I don't know if I can afford to release the two options (clad and unclad) from the begining but there are more people interested in the naked version (I myself like it better that way). I was thinking about making the clothing of these figures detachable so you can have them with and without loincloth. Would that be a reasonable idea or is it kind of nonsense?  o_o

Detachable clothes are a bit off - 28mm is not Playmobil, I think. Actually I like the nude version better, because you sculpted her so nicely. The fur diaper does not flatter her proportions, although it might have looked just like that in the flesh. I will buy whatever version you cast though!
Title: Re: Clearco's Prehistoric Things
Post by: Fremitus Borealis on July 15, 2020, 12:29:52 PM
I took the "detachable clothes" bit not as a Playmobil thing, but rather like how, say, Victrix plastics come with a bunch of different options for assembly. In this instance I can see how that could be helpful; say you want your neanderthals to be European, they can have clothes, but middle eastern, not as much  :)

Hi!
Still figuring out how I'm going to do it (cloth-wise).
My initial idea was to do some Neanderthal for the summer time and/or for these regions that we don't asociate with Neanderthal so much (like Fremitus Borealis pointed out): around the Mediterranean and in the Middle East (the fact that I'm from Spain has nothing to do with it  ;D)
I would like to sculpt a warmer clad version later on, for the winter hunts or for the other European/Asiatic regions they used to live. I like the idea of switching miniatures according to weather  ;)

The thing is, I like the idea of the fur "pareo", but it doesn't look so great once sculpted on the minis (I agree with Michi on that). I have been reading that there is evidence of use of tanning materials among the neanderthals (and hence tanned leather), also of bone needles  (Edit: no needles, only awls), rope and most possibly leather cord. With this data I'm thinking about sculpting some simple leather loincloth, apron-like, for the "summer/southern-version". Some of these loincloths could be also made of fur...

What do you think? Do you have any ideas?
Title: Re: Clearco's Prehistoric Things

I think with clothing.

From what I've gleaned over the years Neanderthals were far from unintelligent. Just a different kind of intelligence to their Cro Magnon counterparts.

Just my tuppence worth :)

Hi!
Slowly and quietly I finished the first batch of my tribe  :)

I had to redo some things (some heads, legs, etc.) as I wasn't happy with them, that's why it took me so long.

As I said originally, these are intended to go with warmer climates/seasons/periods, hence the lack of winter clothing :) I added some jewelry found in excavations in Spain too.

As for weapons, I sculpted some as well:

Left to right: fire and hand axes, stone tipped spears, wooden spears (à la Schöningen), clubs, stone
axes*

*Please note: there is no evidence of hafting in stone axes at that age so these are hypothetical...because they are cool ;)  I used neolithic models as a base but with paleolithic cores instead of polished stone.

I hope you like them! :)

PS.: I finally went for the fur pareo :P
