Hello everyone,
I painted one of the Orcs from the recent Greenskin Wars kickstarter over the weekend. I wanted to paint him with more natural skin tones than the Orc I posted in the painting party. I also tried to be a bit more painterly, not fussing too much over smoothness.

That's superb! The contrast between the pale, greenish skin and the dark armour and base works really well.
-
Whoah! :o :-*
-
Nice work!
-
That’s just plain gorgeous. I’d love to see more! :-*
-
Both skin- and metal tones are gorgeous and the overall effect is simply perfect.
I especially love the pale skin with all the subtle color variations; great work! 8)
-
Wow, that's really a fantastic looking orc. Love the effects on the armour and weapon.
-
You've achieved very nice effects with the metals and flesh. Great figure, too.
-
Many thanks all.
I started another Orc from the same set today. My aim was to finish him in one sitting, took roughly 6½ hours. Some areas are a bit rough and he's obviously lacking a base but I felt he's good enough to post.
-
Cool figure, i like his face. Terrific brushwork.
-
Another - ahem - beauty!
The face is very reminiscent of Kev Adam's very first range of Citadel Orcs - and the paintwork brings it out tremendously.
-
Hot damn, what amazing skin tones!
-
Agree - love the skin tones and his eyes.
-
when you say painterly you're not kidding.
that second face is so frazetta - ish. Fantastic.
it would be nice to see these showing at something closer to their real size as well as the close-ups.
-
That's beautiful. Is the texture in the face all painted on?
-
Thanks all!

I'll see what I can do.

Thanks, it's a mix, but mostly the texture is just painted on, or at least very much exaggerating the subtle texture that might be there. Unfortunately this low res image from the kickstarter is the only image I can find of him unpainted.

-
Either way, you did a great job with the texture. It looks painful! :)
-
Awesome skin!
-
What a perfect couple of Orcs! 8) They really fit into what I think of as Orcs. No flashy colours or stuff!
-
Wow! That skin blows me away! Lovely dark armour too, is it a dull metallic or just matte colours?
-
Thanks guys.

It's similar to the recipe I used on the Sepulchral Guard skeletons but with Scale75 Black Metal as a base.
Couple of pics of the finished Orc.
-
Shit the bed that's good.
-
This face, skin and his eyes are awesome. :o
-
Shit the bed that's good.
:-* what he said!

What I really like is the way you've crammed so much work into that small area around the face. It just goes to show you don't have to kill yourself trying to overwork every square millimetre of a model and it would be counter-productive anyway, drawing the eye too many places at once. That's damn good art technique right there with your decision to make the face the big focus, with the rest of the model content to fade into the background (but with lovely subtlety in the use of the dark shades and heavy, old iron feel) and damn good craftsmanship to wield the brush so beautifully.
I'm really angry with you right now.
-
I just ran out of superlatives!
One of the best orc faces I've seen so far!
Kepp on
Cheers

Thank you, Cubs. That was exactly what I was aiming for. The original intention was to challenge myself to finish a piece in one sitting, something I’ve not done in many years. I decided the best approach would be to treat the figure like a portrait, making the face the main focus of my efforts (and the viewers focus) and letting the rest of the figure frame it. Like you say, I think the rougher finish on the rest actually complements the face.
Big fan of your stuff so I hope you won’t be cross with me for long. ;)

Painted up one of Kev's old classic sculpt in a more classic style.

The rest ain't bad either :D

I love your take on this one :-* :-*

Your painting skills blow me away. From that angle the bow looks a bit rude, like he is getting ready to assault you with something he found in the naughty drawer. lol
-
Great painting! :o I really do love that skin colour choice! :-*
-
Took some new photos of an old Kev Adams Orc Big 'Un I painted last year. More angles on my instagram.

Lovely highlights and the axe head in particular.
-
blimey - these look fantastic at the size they're showing on (my) monitor, which is huge. Amazing.
-
Stunning work.
Anybody want to buy a load of minis, i'm taking up stamp collecting after seeing these! :'(
-
I painted up another orc from the Knightmare Miniatures range. I decided to paint him in a more traditional green but with tints of red and flesh where the skin would be thin or flush with blood. I also added some textures similar to the big orc with the two cleavers that I painted earlier. Snow was made with various snow products from AK Interactive.

Amazing work. Love all of them.
-
Wonderful. :-* :-* :-*
-
Gorgeous again.
-
Fantastic brushwork. Can I ask what sort of technique you use to do the mottled red effect, or is it just very controlled painting?
-
Masterclass - simultaneously inspiring and intimidating! o_o
-
Superb! They're all brilliant, but I think the paler, more naturalistic skin tones are best of all. Staggering work on the brighter green fellows too, though!
-
Thanks all!
Fantastic brushwork. Can I ask what sort of technique you use to do the mottled red effect, or is it just very controlled painting?
I paint on random dots and patches and then refine the shapes, adding highlights and shadows to give it a 3d effect. For the reddish skin I use a thin glaze of Scale75 Red Leather and then bring up the highlights by mixing in a Sc75 Harvester Flesh to the green and then White Sands (a warm off-white) for further highlights.
-
Thank you, it's very well executed.
-
You have created a bevy of inspiring pieces, all BEAUTIFULLY painted. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Wonderful orc. The colors are a rich ontrast.
-
Oh wow! These are some really top-notch paint jobs! Fantastic work on the highlights, and blending the redder, fleshier colour into the green!
-
Breathtaking...
It's very very rare that 25/28mm painted figures look this good this close.
-
Thanks for all the comments.
Thought I'd bump this thread with another paintjob. This time an old Citadel classic. I decided to go with a more "traditional" style with warmer yellows in the highlights.

Top notch. 8)

Excellent!

Fantastic!

Wonderful. I really like his white eyes, they give him character and personalty.... love him.
-
'Real good treat' to see some bigger pics of your pleasing brushwerke!
- Wonderful stuff.

Many thanks for all the comments!
Painted up a Night Goblin as a small Sunday project, hope you like him.

:-* If only I could paint a tenth that well. Love the eyeballs nose and lip. Such great character!
-
Good god man; those eyes! :o
Marvelous work again; the excellent skin tones make him look almost alive...
-
Brilliant. You get so much expression in the faces!
-
Both the Orc & his Goblin friend have wonderfully expressive faces. The Goblin also has a truly magnificent nose. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
These are great. I'm inspired to paint my Battle Masters goblins in a similar way.
Thanks for posting,

More stunning work.

Excellent !
All different, but united by the color scheme.
It's always a great pleasure for the eyes to come on your posts and see your minis.

What a great unusual effect you've put on that sword. I love how you've used the watery paint and different blue shades to get that bubbly magical effect, so imaginative.
-
Thanks man! I've used the same technique before for rust and verdigris and realized that the same technique could be used to represent other effects as well.
-
Beautiful painting - top notch
-
Excellent figure with a great paint job.
-
Damn, they’re good, love the skin variation.
-
Thanks guys!
I've painted up a goblin from Knightmare Miniatures. I decided to experiment a little with the skin by using more realistic flesh tones. Really gives him an uncanny look I think! As always, moss is moss pads from MiniNatur. Mushrooms were sculpted with putty and wire.
(https://i.imgur.com/apBjxEV.jpg) (https://www.instagram.com/p/CAXLLrZHj36/)
-
He's great! And yes, the realistic skin tone makes him look much more like something out of an eerie folktale than a bright green ever could.
-
Marvellous!
-
That's a corker 8)
-
Simply stunning, from the 5 o'clock shadow to the nose 👍
-
That is an amazing paint job! :-*
-
Wow! :o
-
Those skin tones are superb!
-
Painting a gobbo with Bronzed Flesh was always a good way to make a quick creepy chaos creature, but you have elevated it to artistic heights of horrific proportion. Thanks for the nightmares!
-
These are fantastic! I knew I've seen some of those before - turns out I've been following you on insta for a while now :D
I will echo the general consensus - I really like the realistic skin colours. I think it makes the goblins seem more creepy, like some sort of twisted "uncanny valley" effect.
i also love that moss, better get some
-
Thanks guys : )
My growing tribe of pale skinned orcs and goblins. I'm really enjoying this way of painting them. Closeups on my instagram feed.

Spankin'.
-
The pale skintone is really really disturbing. But bloody effective.
-
Agreed, those skintones look so odd but in a good way.
-
Outstanding painting, love those faces
-
Cracking work, so characterful I love 'em.
-
These are amazing! The naturalistic skin tones (and superb brushwork) balance the slight goofiness of the miniatures perfectly, producing something rather eerie. Brilliant!
-
Ooh they look gorgeous!

-
Superb! Nice snow too!
-
Very nice! And those eyes are particularly well done too. Great work.
-
Oh wow - he look brilliant!
Just ordered these and can't wait now.

Great color choice. Makes them look a bit like Nosferatu. The paintjobs are really good, too.

Fabulous and amazing work! :-* :o :-*

Awesome face on that orc!

Superb, hard to remember that these are 25mm models!

amazing. :-* :-*

Great looking orcs and gobbos

Splendid 8)

I dont really like GW style greenskins, but your paintjob is outstanding!

Ah, now that warms the cockles of my heart. The way you've put a slightly different shade of bronze on each scale is very effective.
-
Thanks Cubs. I think I overdid the Verdigris a little on this one. Oh well!

Wow you've got some talent.....
-
That makes me want to paint Nightgoblins. Love your stuff!!!!
-
Those eyes are amazing - so lifelike
-
Yet another goblin! This one was part of the old Harlequin range but is now sold by Black Tree Design. I experimented a little with the eyes by adding a touch of blue to the white of the eyes, quite like the effect.
(https://i.imgur.com/UFrruQw.jpg) (https://www.instagram.com/p/CPcp4LtnEeD/)
-
Yeah, I've spotted how you make the 'white' of the eye really quite dark (which is much more realistic) which makes the light spot leap out and gives so much life to the figure. Cheeky bit of highlight on the upper half of the eyeball really gives it depth as well.

Thank you! The three orcs in the back row are Knightmare and can be found here (https://knightmareminiatures.com/product/orc-regiment). The rest are old Citadel from the early 90s and late 80s, with the exception of the armoured goblin on the left which is from 4A miniatures.

Oh thanks! They all look very good together. I would not have guessed they were from different manufacturers. I guess I need to hunt them down on eBay then.
