Traveller miniatures game announced from Mongoose - http://blog.mongoosepublishing.co.uk/?p=869
KS starts on the 14th November
KS now live - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/vanguard-boarding-actions-in-the-fifth-frontier-wa
Vanguard will be arriving in a massive box set, jam-packed with everything you need. We are still finalising the contents (we keep adding new bits and pieces, like we always do with a Kickstarter project!), but you can expect to see the following:
16 Imperial Marines in Combat Armour
14 Zhodani Troopers in Combat Armour with 2 Warbots
6 Large (A3 size) gameboards depicting the interior of a ship
64 page Rulebook, complete with never-before-seen background on the Imperial Marines and their Zhodani equivalents
A Card Deck with miniature representations of the gameboards (to randomly generate areas of a ship) and Strategy Cards
Many, many Counters to represent wounds, debris, barricades and a lot more
Stand-up Iris Valves in both open and closed versions to help or hinder forces fighting in narrow corridors
The miniatures of Vanguard are produced in ‘heroic’ 28mm scale, and will fit in well with any similar modern game.
No idea about price, but I expect "not cheap"
I'll see what the campaign looks like, but unless it's really expensive or delivering just before the founding of the Imperium, then I can see myself backing this one.
Cutlasses in spaaaace :D
edited to add link to kickstarter

I hope 28mm...

Mongoose though, aye?
So we can expect shit sculpts, worse casting and a list of broken promises.
So much for them moving away from the miniatures end of the hobby...

Porniens? Seriously? And they cannot even keep their filenames typo-free. Seriously, Mongoose.
-
I'd guess the Porniens have some interesting reading material...

You are talking about Prodos Games and the AvP-Kickstarter... I never had problems with Mongoose...

I think the good gentleman is referring to the ill-fated and infamous Judge Dredd kicksarter from Mongoose.
-
Quite right. Their quality control for the Judge Dredd stuff was pretty appaling and most of the sculpts it looked like they were in the same universe by accident.
I'm not saying I didn't buy any, but at that point there weren't any alternatives (hoping Warlord will come through eventually), and I heard a lot about delayed Kickstarter fulfilment and product that never made it into general release before they dropped the licence, despite repeated promises.
I'm glad you never had any issues, and I'm not going to get into an argument on the internet, but let's just say that Mongoose's track record doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
-
Fair play to Mongoose, they did as far as I know eventually supply all the kickstarter stuff unlike Prodos. I never forgave Mongoose for the terrible production quality of their RuneQuest books.

Don't forget sudden cancellation of the entire range with no warning whatsoever leaving whatever fans are left high and dry.

"I'm only buying it for the articles" has NEVER been convincing for porn. Err, I mean Pornien.

The new books from chaosium healed a lot of unsatisfaction, right? I forgive mongoose, because the keep the traveller flame still alive...

So it was not just me?

I'll wait for retail.

I don't think you need the comma there. Because typos and lousy editing ARE seriously Mongoose. Almost their signature, I'd say.
-
I have considered setting up a small proof reading service for gamers at various times over the years.
I figure correcting "it's" and "its" alone could keep me fed. Mongoose would probably be the first company I'd contact, and I reckon they'd fund at least one or two foreign holidays every year with money left over :D

+1
Bet it gets put on the top shelves though, probably with a black cover to hide the Pornien images.
Although Mantic might want to have a word about the name come to think of it with their latest Fantasy releases.

Base set for £90 - which seems to be the new standard price in gaming ::)
I don't see anything on what material they're using for the figures, but I guess it'll be the restic nonsense everyone's using these days :-[
Expected delivery date of July 2019

Given Kickstarter's infamously horrid search feature, here is a direct link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/vanguard-boarding-actions-in-the-fifth-frontier-wa?ref=hero_thanks (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/vanguard-boarding-actions-in-the-fifth-frontier-wa?ref=hero_thanks)

I only noticed today, but Mongoose cancelled the project on the 19th.
Updates and reasons - mainly they realised it was too expensive - here - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/vanguard-boarding-actions-in-the-fifth-frontier-wa/posts/2348286
Probably for the best. Hopefully they can do something with the sculpts at some point

Grenadier products still the best 28mm scale representation of Traveller universe (IMHO) (with Denizen, which are a bit smaller, coming in second). Almost unobtainable today (watch Ebay), and too bad Grenadier never made Zhodani.

Someone made Zhodani, I have two warbots somewhere.
[edit] this keyboard is annoying.
-
Denizen made some figures that look very like Zhodani (albeit Denizen figures are 25mm and therefore a bit slighter than Grenadier 28mm).

Darkest Star makes very similar figs in both 6mm and 15mm, for those who like smaller scales. https://www.darkeststargames.com/15mm-dark-star-sci-fi-range--venturian.html
-
The old Denizen 25mm range were called "Venturian" and I think these 15mm "Venturian" figures are meant to be a continuation of that very line in 15mm.

Yeah, I don't think they ever denied it. The styling's obviously the same. They're nice figs, translated down to smaller scales well.

I remember them. Nice figures (no idea where mine got to).
I thought the 6mm ones were sculpted by the same person, but marketed by Adler (or at least on their stand). I used to get the 25mm ones from GZG. This was back in the days of the annual pilgrimage to Kensington town hall.
Edit: fixed quote

Must admit I wasn’t a fan of this primarily due to the scale (the mongoose thing I’m undecided about). I know it’s old school but somehow traveller is welded to 15mm in my mind.
This looked to me to be an ideal chance to reboot or be inspired by Leviathan or Azhanti High Lightning and have a whole series of different missions and set ups rather than what looked like Imperials and Zhodani board each other.......
That said, I had a look at the rules and even with the limited info, it did seem to work. I used a few figures in flak jackets with pistols and then some SPECTRE operators and cartel and the result was a fast moving firefight.

The neat thing about the Traveller universe was that it seemed almost unlimited (quite like the Universe ! ) . Although Impies vs. Zhodani certainly was a continuing trope, there was a myriad of factions (some engaged in civil war) and you could throw in as opposing forces Vagr pirates, Aslan troopers, K'kree (militant herbivores !), Droyne, Hivers (well, really mercenaries hired by Hivers - so they could be from any race), Davians (humans of a slightly lower tech than either Imps or Zhodani), Sword Worlders (more humans, of a somewhat lower technology rating than Imperials, Zhodani or Davians), and a host of lesser races (i.e. those without jump technology). I agree that Striker (the mass ground combat rules) certainly seemed designed for 15mm (and many were the plastic tank models converted to grav tanks and other hover vehicles), but the original roleplaying game certainly could be played at 25/28 mm.

One of the (very, very old) campaigns I played in had the group of PCs get involved (via a really bad misjump) with an impending invasion of known space by an alliance of photosynthetic and ergovore species (ie plant critters, mostly). They'd run into the K'Kree, who as we all know are militant vegetarians, and things had gone...badly. Really, really badly. It was funny to see the centaurs getting their holier-than-thou dietary elitism jammed down their throat by an even more legitimately irritated bunch of aliens, but the alliance didn't plan on stopping with stomping through K'Kree space and humanity is regrettably omnivorous by nature, so that was a problem. :)

You forgot the Solomani, though the least said about them the better (Ramshackle Empire).

And 15s fit nicely on the Ashanti High Lightning maps!
-
That’s the thing - while as kids we had a few citadel spacefarer figs, what we really wanted were those 15mm figs in the box set. You can do Traveller in 28mm but I suspect the core target public would support 15mm.
Also, Traveller isn’t all about Naval boarding actions, there’s salvage, hijack to name but two and for me it’s far more a paramilitary game of ex service characters than regulars.
A different figure mix - smaller forces with Vargr & Aslan there from the off would have got my attention
