It's already that time of year again.
Are we doing the Build Something Competition 2019?
-
Yeah :)

Does it count if I get somebody else to build it for me ;)
-
Yeah :)
What's the theme?
-
No idea, got nowt to do with it, just agreeing with the sentiment lol
-
I don’t think I’ll manage this year! I’ve got too much going on in ‘real’ life! :'(
...but I’m happy to watch other people’s amazing builds take shape! ;)
-
I might have a proper go this year, health wise seem to be getting back on track.
My theme suggestion ‘speed’.

Only if the builder is a cat. That's one of the new regulations promulgated - just now :D

Still to be chosen!

Good to hear - and if we decide to do this, suggestions are welcome.

Resting on your laurels ;) :D

My cat is ready!
-
My suggestion is: different categories of judging, one being "HISTORICAL ACCURACY TO SCALE." That way I have a chance at winning ;) but I'm up for a new challenge.
-
I'll be up for it.
-
count me in!!!
-
Yerp, I'm interested.
-
Count me in, as apparently my pussy and/or beaver builder is ready and up for the challenge :D
NICE
-
There is going to be a BC in 2019 and I will be it's impressatio. Dates, theme and rules will be run by the admin board shortly and then posted for the general public.
-
By the way, feel free to post suggestions in this thread.
-
It's the centenary of the end of the first world war , what about 'WWI'or 'PEACE"?
-
It's the centenary of the end of the first world war , what about 'WWI'or 'PEACE"?
WWI may be to narrow a theme to appeal to a broad a spectrum of members as possible.
I like it when BC contains a particular terrain building challange. "Water", "fire", "flight" are themes which have broad applications and can all be tricky to make look convincing on the game board.
Any suggestions along those line?
-
Animal, vegetable or mineral :D
-
I’m up for it too, depending on the theme. Maybe I’ll even complete something.
-
How about 'Earth' or even 'Air', especially as you've had 'Fire' & 'Water'
-
Poisonous? Or something like spotted?
-
Production (as a theme that is).
-
Hey Guys stop Badgering Hammers!
He is working as hard as he can to get this set up.

Badgering him does not help.

Badgers.
Good theme that.
Failing that, how about 'noise'?
-
Poisonous? Or something like spotted?
I like that.
How about "Wreck"?
-
How about "Wreck"?
Maybe "Broken" instead? Wreck could limit the builds to man made structures. My suggestion would be "Movement". Modeling movement would be interesting.
-
Failing that, how about 'noise'?
How about "silence"? Or perhaps topically "exit?"
(Broken and poisonous both seem perfect though imho)
-
Poisonous? Or something like spotted?
I'm a fan of spotted. 2 different ways you could look into that.
-

I had a girlfriend once, who was particularly insistent that I understood the difference between exit and entry :o
-
lol Did the other girlfriends not care?
-
spotted would be a nice theme indeed
-

No smut!
-
lol Did the other girlfriends not care?
The rest have been Welsh, so it's never been an issue :P
Back on topic, how about wet and wild?
-
I'm a fan of spotted. 2 different ways you could look into that.
Especially if it's spotted dick. :P
No smut!
It isn't!
OK, maybe.
-

OK, maybe.
Love a good spotted dick.
-
Love a good spotted dick.
Ooh matron :P

Oh, shiny :-* Best part of the year. :)
Maybe the theme could be "small" ;) . That way I would be forced to do something small, and have a chance to finish it in time (not likely lol ).
One thing I would like to ask, is to make the deadlines clear in the rules. Last time was a little confusing for me o_o

Some years ago we the theme was "CD", which meant the challange was to build something using a CD disc as base (or in some othe way incorporated).
I like that constraint to the chaallange and we had some pretty cool entries.
How about 'Pringles tube', 'computer fan' or 'box of matches'?

I like that take on it Hammers.

And I’ve very nearly finished lol

Hammers,
Some of these kids might not know what a cd is. I think using a 78 would be good. Or maybe a 45. Having a constraint would be fun.
Snitchy sends.
-
Would DVD-s count? lol

I also like this approach.

If the theme lands on pringles tube. You should get extra points If You are NOT building a wizards tower from it. :D
If the final theme fits my mood and/or needs I am in.
-
How about 'Pringles tube', 'computer fan' or 'box of matches'?
Any of those sound good to me. I like the generic themes, time periods are for the LPL bonus rounds ;)

Sounds like the perfect excuse to build a model meth lab.

I should be in for the new contest. 8)
-
You've won already Paul with that entry! ;)
-
I had another idea: trees are notoriously difficult to look good on the game board. As terrain pieces they are useful for most games.
-
I like that 8)
-
I like that 8)
Would that be because you've been working on trees lately?
;)
-
lol Possibly lol
-
Thinking about it, how about ‘generic terrain’. Hills, trees, hedges etc. Useful items to have.
-

....rivers, ponds, beaches, rocks, mountains?
-
What about 'Plant life'; build a piece of scenery on a base no larger than 200mm x 200mm to the theme 'Plant life'.
-
Or on a cd :D
-
Pringles trees on cds?
If the aim is to create terrain a more generic term might serve: "difficult terrain", "broken ground" or "obstructions".
Basically any of those terms wargames rules use to describe terrain features that hinder troop movements.
-
Wouldn’t the use of CDs limit the thematic range to the 1980s or ‘90s? I have no objection to that but I would ask that the material parameters be broadened to include Fax paper rolls and floppy disks.
Cos I actually need/want to build some, how about ‘bunkers’ as a theme? Any type, be that coal, Hitlerian or plain military style items.
-
How about 'Earth' or even 'Air', especially as you've had 'Fire' & 'Water'
I'd say 'Air' has been covered to, in the 'Flight' theme a couple of years back.
-
I'm being realistic I've even less free time than the last time I had to drop out. So I'll only be cheering from the sidelines this time.
So my thoughts on a subject is (and because I'm not entering I've no personal preference or good humored cunning plan for a topic)
To incorporate several of the musings already proffered.
It should incorporate part or all of a Pringles tube. Must include either in the design part of or as the maximum base size, a CD.
As for the theme sub surface travel not limited to transport.( that easily covers both earth and water)
Plus its likely to lead to builds that will continue to have a use after the comp has finished
Mark.
-
Well, I think that's enough of cute but irrelevant badger pics for now, thank you. :)
Speed
"HISTORICAL ACCURACY TO SCALE."
WWI
Peace
Animal
Vegetable
Mineral
Earth
Poisonous
Spotted
Production
Noise
Wreck, Broken
Exit
Small
Pringles tube
Computer fan
Box of matches
Trees
Generic terrain
Plant life, Vegetation
Difficult terrain, broken ground, obstructions
Bunkers
I came up with another suggestions.
Warmachines.
So, to make things a little clearer for myself in regards how I’d like to run this, I’ve categorized the suggestions in my mind and come to the conclusion that what I’d like to see is a theme which
a) Is a general challenge to represent on a gaming board scale
b) Has a general application across all LAF boards
c) Has a fairly obvious and restrictive interpretation as opposed to include pretty much anything
d) Results in something which is of practical use on the gameboard.
So far my favorites suggestions, with the above in mind, are:
-Plant life, Vegetation
-Box of Matches
-Difficult terrain
-Small (for example, like whatever terrain or marker piece you can fit on a 25mm washer, which is not a figure but looks amazing in all its detail)
So any last minute input before I post my rule draft on the moderators board for scrutiny?
-
I think that's a good shortlist there Hammers.
-

Agreed

I like warmachine simply because I have one on my to do list ( :D ) but i agree that the shortlist is good 8)

Me too.
At least if 'box of matches' doesn't mean something made solely out of one single box of matches... or maybe not, that WOULD be a challenge! :D
-

It's just a suggestion. There should be more challenges of the type "CD", "Box of Matches", "Pringles tube", "Whatever is at the bottom of your desk drawer".
-

I know, it's just that it got me wondering what could be done with a single matchbox and nothing else. I bet some of the guys could come up with something cool with just that.
I'm warming up to the idea:
Beer can
Cocktail sticks
Detergent bottle or jar or whatever other sort of container it comes in
Packaging
I'd like to add 'big old portable air conditioner that's getting in the way' to the list, as that would be useful to get rid of, but that might be a bit over-specific... :D
-
I think even if it's a general theme, some sort of limiting factor would be good, whether that's a base size restriction or a specified component.
-
Shortlist looks good to me. If my time allows, I'm in. Hell, a couple years ago I did the damned thing in one weekend.
o_o lol
-

Well, youre the master of junk! :)
-
Well, youre the master of junk! :)
Too kind! :D
I also have a treasure chest-style old wine box and bottle rack, a small plastic multi-level shelf unit on wheels and a large wooden barrel with rusting hoops, but I doubt these could be themes for the BSC...
And another suggestion:
toys
Would need a good set of rules to work though.
-
It probably would be too complicated as there's a time factor, but wouldn't it be awesome if we all had to send some junk to someone else and you'd have to include that what you were sent in your build.
-
Haha I second the ''big old portable air conditioner that's getting in the way" idea... for reasons :)
Seriously though, my desire is a theme I can squeeze into my Space Hulk layout. I already did plants for that, but I can do it again if need be :)
-
I second the 25mm base topic. I may actually have a chance of making something in time! ;)
-

I like it to, eventhoigh it is definitely bot the eaziest way to excel. I suppose it is the terrainmakers equivalwnt to a haiku.
-
Now I like that .
Something that's more twenty times smaller than my last try.
I could be tempted to find the time for a 25mm base sized project.
-
I always thought the aim of these challenges/ comps was to get folk to build something they will actually use. I suspect that placing an arbitary restriction around the material like ‘matchbox’ or beer can will work against that.
-
If you make the restriction a 25mm base, the topic could be to make an objective/casualty marker?
-
I like the idea of a War Machine.
I may even enter if it is :D
-
You can practically hear the cogs spinning in fevered minds. lol
These musings are nearly as much fun to read as the build threads.
-
While I like the ’Small’ the I think it is more suitablw as a round theme for LPL. The BSC is about process of construction and there is not a whold lot of it which can take place on a 25mm washer.
-

I like the idea as it would indeed be a challenge and would indeed put the participants to the test.
-

Hmmm, shipping costs for a portable air conditioner could be high.... ;)
-
I think size, as in "small" is relative.
A row boat is small compared to a tanker, or food stall on a market place compared to a two story building.
Of course this way is harder to regulate the theme in the rules and would require some common sense from the participants, but I don't think that would be a problem here. :)
Confining the build to a 25mm base has it's own challenges though and it would be an interesting competition as well.
-
I like the idea as it would indeed be a challenge and would indeed put the participants to the test.
Interesting idea but maybe just send a picture of the item that you need to use.
So people can try to source it themselves should save some postage.

Require a picture of the piece “in context” with other figures, terrain, etc. That should make it obvious if the project qualifies as “small”.
Besides, strict rules aren’t really necessary. This is about building stuff, not winning.

That's quite an easy solution hahaha could have thought of that :)

I know I am jumping into this discussion kind of late. But how about a barricade. No matter what period or type of game there is always a use for some kind of barricade.
-
Has to be a barricade of vegetables.
-
Has to be a barricade of vegetables.
A carroticade.
-
A carroticade.
A broccolicade would be especially effective against my daughter.
-
Extra points for someone that makes a barricade of carrots? :D

Well, you know there is quite a lot of little cutesy mammals in medieval gear out there... Do it!
-
Does Rommel’s Aparagus count?
-
Organic shapes are not my thing so I'll be ducking out this year, but I'm looking forward to what you chaps and chappesses can come up with - good luck to all! :D
-
Organic shapes are not my thing
Well, it is supposed to be a challenge. Come on, I know that if you put your creative imagination to it you'll rock us all.
-
Rich,
If you give it a bash I'll give up on the twigs drying on the hallway radiator(that'll please the Mrs) and not use any wood or wire for my tree's. Infact I'll be a total idiot and use cereal packet card.
-
Thanks chaps lol
There is also another small problem that absorbs all current free time... but I will have a think.
-
lol Im pretty sure A nine month head start on a build something competition is outside the rules , plus its way way off theme.
(You might want to let Mrs down gently though.)
-
OK I have a plan.
Well the start of a plan.
Like about 5% of a start of a plan.
-
Thanks chaps lol

Awww.... :-*
-
OK I've now got 5% of the start of 2 plans....
You realise of course that this pic was immediately followed by a 'poonami' of epic proportions.
-

Those organic shapes don’t fit this theme either ;D
