Title: What is the best dragon out there?
Post by: nickelkers on December 13, 2018, 11:55:55 PM
Hi all,

So it has been a long-standing desire of mine to have a really superb dragon to be the crown of my miniature collection, and as I was watching game of thrones this evening that desire was rekindled within me.
I have only one question to ask you fine people - what dragon miniature do you think is the best out there? I’ve struggled to find many with the right mix of grandeur and detail.
CMON’s Cang is a strong contender, some of forgeworld’s offering are also very good, I’m just wondering if there are any other really great ones out there that I might not have seen. Let me know which you like!

Many thanks,

My favourite is the Heresy Dragon however you might struggle to get it. He recently had a kickstarter for it for final castings so you may be able to contact him and add a pledge in late.

I honestly liked the Red Dragon from the D&D prepaints years back.

What Beefcake said. If I ever had the money I'd want a Heresy Dragon, it just looks like it's crawled out of the pages of a fantasy novel.

It is a beautiful sculpt but that's a Wyvern not a Dragon  :D

It seems pretty affordable too...

I use Schleich plastic dragons in games where I need a big beast.  Most are available on the internet and relatively inexpensive

Judging from pictures and reviews Reaper Bones has some decent dragons.

Quality wise they cant compete with Heresy and Forgeworld but at the asking price they're supposed to be great value for money.

Wiz Kids just recently released some big dragons based upon Pathfinder and D&D designs for about $30. They might be worth a look. The look pretty impressive in person.

Or classic oldey,

http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=teronus-the-ultimate-dragon&cName=fantasy-2528mm-dragons

Metal of course...

and they have others in the old Grenadier range  available.

But some of the bones, ones, I have several are nice in the affordable bracket.

Nothing to match the class of the heresy dragon but that's in a class of its own, and well outside of my price-band or capability.

They have some really amazing sculpts in that range, and they repaint wonderfully (if you want to, you don't even need to).

The old McFarlane dragons are even better, though a lot harder to find now.

I've always been enamored by the old Confrontation Dragon (https://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/media/catalog/product/l/m/lm010-2.jpg), but I 'only' have the Wyvern/Cynwäll Dragon (http://nasthyr.free.fr/Open2006/HPIM4268.JPG).

The Reaper Dragon(s) have always been awesome and expensive. More than Forge World expensive even, so the Schleich route look spretty interesting when you're after a BIG dragon...

For their price, the Wizkids unpainted dragons are really impressive. Not exactly what you asked for, but since the Bones dragons were mentioned I figured it was fair to bring these up too. I got the Red Dragon recently, and it's pretty cool.

Guys, please, this is a textbook example of how to make the internet worse. OP asks a simple question, what is a "superb" dragon to be the "crown" of his collection, citing examples that the contenders would sit next to,  and half the respondents are listing the first dragon that springs to mine. Bones? Wizkids? Schleich?  Are you really putting these forward as superb specimens of miniatures?

I realize people are following an instinct to be helpful but consider the signal to noise ratio of the internet, and consider that e-ink also produces waste. A thread with four valuable responses is a hundred times more useful than one with four valuable responses and ten not so. Sorry to let my cantankerous nature show but I, too, am speaking from an instinct to make LAF a better place for all.  :)

There are some good responses here. The Heresy and Confrontation dragons are great suggestions. I can speak personally to dozens of other great dragons but none not already mentioned that could unseat these or the OP's examples for the specific criteria mentioned with examples so will save them for an appropriate thread. nickelkers, though, if you have a means to pick up Cang you may want to jump on it.

Really? That's your example of making the internet worse? Not trolling, threatening, doxxing, swatting or any of a myriad of actively harmeful shit that goes on, but people being TOO HELPFUL? Maybe, just maybe, someone else is also looking for cool dragons at a slightly different price point and is inspired by what they find in the thread.

This.

Love the Heresy dragon...will I buy one for my GoT project? Nope....well maybe...ok, probably yes.

Am i more likely to buy the one of the Bones dragons? Almost certainly.

Should I start a separate thread, asking for reasonably priced dragons..whatever that means, because everyone’s “typical” spend is anything but typical? Why bother, when LAF is already such a vibrant and informative forum.  8)

The original post asked for 'superb' dragons and a few people threw some examples of what they use in. I can see what Spooktalker is saying but personally I'd rather have a friendly, helpful thread than a load of arguments and sh#t. There's some great dragons on this thread already but I'm always happy to see more. It was great to see that old Citadel dragon, for example. Let's try and keep the examples to what we think are good ones, as per the original post, but there's not too much harm done if a few others are thrown in.  :)

The Middle Earth Smaug by Games Workshop has always impressed me. Not cheap.

Sticking to Games Workshop, the Carmine Dragon by Forgeworld is also very nice but I don't think it's particularly big.

I personally think the Middle Earth Smaug by Minifigs (c1976?) is a good looking dragon.
Not huge, not festooned with detail, but very ...characterful.

To be fair he would fit in better with modern 15mm now, and his style is probably more Ivor the Engine than Peter Jackson, but I liked him.

For the bigger is better team I would probably say none of the traditional miniature makers would fit the bill. If you want big and impressive ignore figure makers and gamers, look at house furnishings. You get some decorative statuettes/sculptures that are sold to sit on shelves or bookcases that are more impressive (and often cheaper) than gaming pieces. They don't have the constraints that gaming dragons have, so may be less durable if you start pushing them around on a table-top, but they are designed to be show beasts.

No, not being too helpful, being pointedly unhelpful, but convincing one's self of the opposite. For most people talking on the internet I think deep down, it comes more  from a desire to put one's own self forward rather than to help. I can't tell you how many answers I have searched for on the internet to find four page threads of non-experts opining on the best answer they can come up with off the top of their head, and no answer of merit.

I didn't claim this was among the worst problems, just that each such post makes the internet a little worse rather than better, so your reference to threatening ect is fallacious. Though in my personal experience I never encounter those things or the danger of encountering those things, simply by choosing where I go. Whereas I encounter the problem I'm talking about all the time. And I only bother mentioning it because we have a cultivated community here where people consider other people. I'm highlighting the need to respect the time we are implicitly taking up in many other people's days by posting. Attention and time are precious commodities, more so now than ever.

Easy answer is easy.  Even after all these years, Grenadier's old Teronus the Ultimate Dragon is still, well, the ultimate dragon.  Accept no substitutes.  Currently available through Mirliton for quite a reasonable price.

Can we please focus on just posting excellent examples of dragons. I do understand both sides of the discussion but I'd rather just be made aware of great dragon figures I didn't know about. So, please don't fill the thread up with every dragon figure you've ever seen, and likewise, please let's not argue about what should be a pleasant thread. My main disappointment so far is that I can't afford that lovely old Citadel dragon.

It's in the eye of the beholder I guess. It would be boring if we all liked the same thing. It would be preferable if people posted what they genuinely considered to be good examples.

If you think the thread is pointless, don't read it, I've enjoyed most of it. Not these bits though.  :)

I stand by my Bones recommendation. There are better sculpts out there, but value for money I think they're hard to beat.

One of the large Bones dragons, well painted and based, could easily be the "crown" of a collection. Bones gets a bad reputation, but from my experience the plastic works better the larger the model is. Many of the human sized miniatures have weird bends (usually backwards) but the ogres are lovely.

While I didnt post the Sleich ones I think they're worth posting too. If you want a dragon that looks like the dragons on GoT they're pretty much spot on and different people have different ideas on what a dragon should look like.

Yes.  I presume you think "superb miniature" can only mean super-expensive cartoony like GW, right?
Hard to tell since you didn't make any suggestion yourself.

Asking what is the "best dragon" is 100% subjective, so you're obviously going to get dozens of answers.
What you like isn't what others like.

I like the Cynwall Dragon as well, and Warploque dragon for the wingless kind. They're a bit more original than some. These are of manageable size too, so you can use them in games without being massively overpowering...

Most Reaper Bones Dragons are huge, but then that was kinda the point, making BIG minis with cheap price tag.

Well, I like the classic kinda Dragons Ral Partha did ( and most are still available today from Ral Partha Europe or Iron Wind Metals ).

Draco Dracorum:

Niddhog the Wyrm and lots of others:

Also Grenadier did quite some niceties/nasties, as of course Tom Meier in his Thunderbolt Mountain range.

But basically, do a Google search on ad&d dragon, warhammer dragon, miniature dragon and gazillions will pop up  ;)
