Title: Galactic Hero’s first play
Post by: flatpack on December 16, 2018, 05:39:09 PM
Round at Has.beens den today.
First play of Galactic Hero’s.
Got the fist full of lead rules but first time we’ve played the sci fi version.

So 4 players, and plenty to investigate on this abandoned planet. Crashed satellites, abandoned mines, water works, failed space trucks etc.

So we all land on the planet, so let’s see what happens....

My 50’s Rocket me, advance to the tomb.

Garry’s Sandmen advance, “hugging” the rocks.

Ian’s boys encounter a Sand Witch - not cheese and pickle..

James robots go for the sewage works - no swimming.

James robots then try to climb the rocks. With poor dice rolls, they prove again and again that they can’t climb rocks.

Garry’s Sandmen, creepy creepy, (not like Garry)

My Rocketmen approach the waterworks.

James Robots get attached by the super spider.

But with great dice roll, he shows it who is boss.

Ian and James battle for the abandoned mine...

Ian gets a good shot in on the waterworks after James has layed into it with every gun he has. Unfortunately the water works finally blows and takes out Ians trooper that was firing at it. Bad luck sir.

My Rocketman takes on a Robot in hand to hand as I had now worked out that tommy guns don’t work that well against robots.
Had to hand and a win for the boy from the 50’s...one Robot out of the game.

Unfortunately I did try this agin, and got gunned down...oh well

Games ends with a win to Ian, as he still had all his troops and he had equipment that he had found too.

Great rules, good fun, and a great run in to Christmas...now to paint all those figures that are still lying around..

Yep that was it in a nutshell! Great game and the rules ran very smoothly for a first game. Ian and I particularly enjoyed the Joker cards which we used to put random monsters (chosen by the Umpire) in each other's way.
Great to see everybody once again.

Very nice looking game. I am very interested in this ruleset, and painting now some figures. Who is the maker of your matt?

Thanks to Flatpack for the nice report.
The mat was a Christmas present from my lovely wife last Christmas!
It came from those nice people at Deep Cut. It is about 6' x 4' but I
covered some of it up to give a 4' square playing area.
The rocks are from an aquatic shop.
The water purifiers (the blue bubble filled towers) were handles on a cutlery set.
My wife lets me have options on anything she otherwise would throw out.
The power plant that Ian blew up at the end of the game was (in a previous
life):-a water bottle, Games workshop empty paint tub, half of a broken Christmas
bauble & a few other bits.
The various types of flora (Orange, white & green) were from a pet shop (aquarium bits).
The two Star Wars style towers on round bases were toy laser rifles that came with a
poundland alien, he is waiting to become a large statue.
The ruined temple was eight pillars, that were too small, so I mounted them onto plinths
& some bits of MDF.
The land rovers were £1 each from Sainsbury's, Martian rovers, with some bits added.
The hover raft (next to the land rovers) was from scap bits, as was just about everything else.
Oh, the Sand Witch was down to me hating to waste mixed miliput. Each time I had a bit
left over from something else, it was added to the 'Witch'
I enjoy making Sci-Fi scenery, few people say it is not accurate, unlike historical stuff.

Awesome report. Really shows what the rules are good for: taking whatever you have and putting on a fun game.

We enjoyed your rules a lot.
I have the fist full of lead version, and has.been got these just reciently.
I was thinking of getting your Mexican revolution rules to use for ww1 East Africa skirmish ?
What do you think ?
Would that work ?

Should be enough in Galactic Heroes rules-wise to put together a WW1 in Africa game. However, not gonna stop ya from buying more stuff!
I've been working on a Big Battle version too:

An excellent report, Flatpack, and I agree with what all have said about your striking terrain. All sorts of inspiration there.

Would these rules be a good fit for Dr Who gaming? I'm especially interested in statting up Daleks and Cybermen (and the good Doctor himself, of course!) - UNIT or companions are easy under any system.

I'd say it would be good for Doctor Who, just set the Doctor up as a full blown Galactic Hero, you could use traits to capture the main qualities of each incarnation.

I have been working on just such a thing.  I have a full PDF thrown together with background, pics, and cards.  Still hashing out the 'stats' as both the Daleks and Cybermen are really powerful and are slightly beyond the scope in GH (with regards to weapons/stats).  I'm trying to find the right balance to make them usable versus normal humans.  GH weapons work well within the normal sci-fi genre (humanoid v humanoid), but the Dal/Cyb weapons are really powerful.  Trying to avoid creating new weapons, but the problem is that by giving them the standard weapons with GH rules, any other combatant has access to them as well.  Making them less unique.

Very nifty, I love a good retro SciFi.
I've never played Fistful of Lead - how does Galactic Heroes play?

Ironhead, thank you for the response. Your points are well taken regarding Daleks and Cybermen. They are tricky things to replicate on the tabletop, partly due to the fact that they are represented in widely divergent ways in different serials: one minute they are world conquering terrors, the next they are manhandled into a pond by some extras and blow themselves up. I sometimes toy with having them become easier adversaries as the Doctor and his friends learn more about them/acquire more stuff, but that requires linked scenarios, which isn't always possible, and does make for more finicky rules.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread!   ::)

Did you check out the Codex? I have some rules already for the Doc.

Plenty of reviews of Fistful of Lead around LAF. Here's my own GH links:

You'll find we use it for all kinds of SciFi and not.

No you didn’t hijack the thread, it’s fine.
It’s all good that everyone can chat, ask questions, and get directions off each other.
Pete (has.been) do you want to comment on how Galactic hero plays ?
I know I enjoyed it.

(Thanks for being such a gentleman, FP!)

Well, due to copyright issues, the Codex covers "Darloks" and "Robotons..."

I originally purchased Fist Full of Lead, Horse & Musket & Galactic Heroes, for use by the
School War-Games club I help run. They seemed to offer a fun, simple, but challenging game,
with added bonus of a result within an hour (all the time we get). Having played them, with a
variety of gamers, all have had an enjoyable time. Setting up your 'team' is a lot less stressful
than say Rogue Stars. I would recommend RS if you only intend to paint a few Sci-Fi figures,
but use them a lot. It is a good game with some very nice ideas. GH though has galvanised
me into painting some more of my Sci-Fi lead mountain AND making more scenery.
I recommend buying (at least) one of the stable of FFofL rules, and give it a try.

Steady on chaps, outer space's not rocket science! Get yer Daleks out, but make 'em a tad vulnerable to Faversham's Funnies. After all, these days there's a girlie Doctor got 'em squawking...

Galactic Heroes is a great set of rules and the Codex that BaronVonJ references is invaluable. I've already used the rules for Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who and Judge Dredd.

The last game we played was the 'Aliens' inspired scenario and we managed to play it twice in one evening.

Use the ruleset and codex and you've got a great toolkit for sci-fi gaming, that just about covers everything.

Currently I'm working on fitting the Who types into the Savage Worlds system; the last thing I need is another rules set! Oh, but the temptation remains strong.   :D

Fantastic game you have set up there. Brilliant use of the knife handles.

I've got to say that I really like the GH rules. Our small group has played our first game and have a second planned for after the holiday. We really liked the rules and the way they played. Its the first game I've played in a long time where there wasn't a single suggestion afterwards about "what could have been done better" with regards to the rules.

That’s a good comment about the rules, because if people are happy with the rules, they can just get on with enjoying the game. Nice...
