Title: Muscovites for Pikeman's Lament (commander July 9th)
Post by: Thaddeu on December 19, 2018, 04:23:14 PM
Hi all,

Since my Ottomans thread is wrapping up for now due to having painted all the minis I have for it, I'm starting up a new thread to chronicle my Muscovites and keep me motivated.

First, a quick overview of the project so far:

Streltsy form the backbone of this project, and hold a special place in my heart since one of them is the first historical model I ever painted. These are all Assault Group (aka TAG) minis, and in Pikeman's Lament they could either be Elite Shot or Forlorn Hope.

While I initially made these peasants to represent Ukrainians for the Khmelnitsky Rebellion, there's no reason I couldn't field them as Russian Clubmen in PL. Kitbashed from a variety of kits, but mostly Gripping Beast Dark Age Infantry.

The "Agitators. Priests or Heroes" rule lets you add a little extra miniature variety, while also toughening up a given unit. These are all TAG freeby minis.

And that's it for completed units, but here are some Border Guard conversions that I will eventually expand into a full unit of Raw (or perhaps Commanded) Shot.

Thanks for reading! Comments are appreciated, and apologies for the inconsistent image quality. Keep an eye out for Boyar Cavalry over the next week or two...

Those are very nice! My friend had Muscovite and Cossack armies for the WRG "green book" renaissance rules, so I've played with and against them many times. Will you also be adding the mobile screens for your Streltzi?

Thanks!

On the one hand, I'm hesitant to spend money on something I could just scratchbuild out of coffee stirrers in an evening. On the other hand, it's been six years and I haven't scratchbuilt them yet. So... yeah I'll probably just get some whenever I make my next TAG order.

Those are very nice!  I have the same TAG Russians sitting around with only a few painted, this might be the inspiratation I need to get them done!  Where did you get information for the uniforms or the flag?

Thank you!

Where did you get information for the uniforms or the flag?

A quick google image search is my source for those, sorry. Historical accuracy is not really a major priority of mine, so I rarely do more research than, say, Wikipedia, or perhaps buying an Osprey if I'm being really ambitious.

Thanks everyone!

Here are some Dvor cavalry, just Assault Group straight out of the package. Elite Gallopers in Pikeman's Lament.

A beautifully painted army, and of a rarely depicted subject.

Wow, love your Cav.
I have looked at TAG figures, they are nice.
Your painting takes them to another level.

Aww, thanks everyone! Regarding the painting, I really must admit that I think Nick Collier's sculpting and GW's washes do most of the heavy lifting.

Anyway, as a special Christmas treat, I've quickly painted up a Saint Nicholas mini. I declare it relevant and on-topic for this thread because Nicholas of Myra is venerated by the Eastern Orthodox churches.

Fun. Are you sure he should be in red, not white, however?

A perfect photo to end Christmas.
St. Nick with his bag of presents for the men.
Or is their pay?
I am sure the troops will be happy. ;)

You're probably right! However, being pressed for time, I just replicated the color scheme on the box.

Meanwhile, here's more feudal cavalry. All TAG except one converted from a GB heavy Arab cavalry kit.

Hi all, now that I've cleared up my Xmas stuff and painted two more light musketeers, it's time for group photos!

There's more on the way, but this is a full 24-point Pikeman's Lament force and I think that's worth documenting. Apologies for the missing standards and proxied commander...

Well, it's been a while (thanks 120-day warning!) but I have a new batch of Muscovites!

They're kitbashed from a mix of medieval Arab, ECW, and WSS cavalry kits. Regardless of their historical tactics, I'll probably field them as Trotters to contrast with the feudal Gallopers already painted.

Awesome painting. Thank you for sharing. I have them in 15 mm, but these miniatures really show why 28 mm is the real deal. Any chance for some close up shots of you peasants?

Cheers
