Finally Warhammer Quest comes to 40K. I played the original WHQ a lot, and always looked for a 40K equivalent.
So you can imagine that I was very curious and also a bit exited about the game.
I have not played it yet, but started painting some minis...

Obsidius Mallex in Sons of Horus Colours. I really dislike the current look of most chaos marines, therefore I used at least some colours that I like. ;)
Pious Vorne, the pyromaniac zealot.
UR-025, the man of steel from an ancient forgotten time.
I painted him to fit my Mechanicus!

Looks like you're off to a great start. The alternative miniatures integrate seamlessly into the group as well.
-
Thanks!
The alternative miniatures integrate seamlessly into the group as well.
My thoughts exactly! ;)
-
They look AMAZING, Agis!
-
Nice painting.
-
Amazing! That robot is a really nice figure - and you've more than done him justice! The others are great too.
-
Impressive as always!
Love what you've done.
-
Fantastic painting work!!!
-
Really nice painting Agis, once again. :-* I purchased the game too, and plan to start painting them over the holidays. I really like the mix of miniatures, especially the traitor guards and rogue psykers.
What I can't understand however, is the topknot (?) on the big bad marine boss... I mean it's like pole stuck on top of his head with skulz on it? How does that thing stay up? lol
I am thinking I will cut it off and move it to the packpack instead? Or just remove it altogether?
-

I was thinking the exact same thing. Very silly bit of detailing there. Other than that I rather like the sculpt, not sure what the problem with the CSM is from Agis' POV.
Regardless, fantastic painting there. I particularly like the idea of Mister Super-Heretical AI Robot disguising itself in Mechanicus iconography. That's one way to avoid having your data cores violently deconstructed. :)
-
Superb painting Agis :-*
-

Well I don't like the warped armour, the backpacks, tooth and claws in the armour etc etc.
But each to his own. I will always turn Chaos minis a bit down...
;)

I must've missed the worst of those, but then I haven't been paying very close attention. The CSM above seems fine other than the silly topknot thing. I remember the Possessed were super-mutated and the Nurgle guys have always been twisted and dressed in armor that shouldn't still be powered (or sealed). I take it the more "regular" CSM sculpts have gone down the same rabbit hole as well?
Still, like I said, great painting.

The top knot might be a reverence to Abbadon...
-
that's some fantastic painting on some great figs. :-*
game seems to be getting some good feedback / reviews.
don't really like the whole 40k shtick, but am tempted.
-
The top knot might be a reverence to Abbadon...
Likely so. Chaos marines are noted for their slavish adherence to fashion trends. At least this guy didn't succumb to the urge to mount those idiotic trophy spikes on his armor. :)
I distinctly remember a local Tyranid player from the 3E days who entered a painting contest with a "Chaos vs. the Swarm" diorama that consisted of a converted Hive Tyrant standing there doing a belly laugh pose with Abbadon in front of him, jammed into the ground upside down by his spikes with his feet kicking helplessly in the air. It was sight to see.
-
Superb work...

What an interesting image.

Its not a full size skull.
Missing the back half.
And have you seen what stylists do with just hairspray? This has extras.
And as mentioned, the topknot is believed to be a homage to Abbadon.

Impressive stuff. I love a lot of the miniatures from the game and have been picking them up on eBay some really crackers in that game.

LOL, I am trying to sell Halfling twins atm...
And, a slight conversion…
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/Obsidius_Mallex_and_Marines.jpg)
Obsidius Mallex with Chaos Marine bodyguards. I painted them again in the colours of the Sons of Horus.
In addition I swapped the backpacks for Mk II packs and added a Mk II helmet to tone them a bit down, I just do not like horns and too many pointed trophy racks...
And the always welcome scale comparison shot:
From left to right - Classic plastic Marine, BF Chaos Marine, Primaris
...somehow they have grown on the Blackstone Fortress...
As always more on my site: http://www.adpublishing.de/html/blackstone_fortress.html

Nice work.
Interesting comparison.
-
Tried to resist the Fortress buy....:)
Not so easy any more. Thanx Agis.....:D
Cheers,
Don
-
LOL, I am trying to sell Halfling twins atm...
yeah well not all the minis from the game are great ;)
-
Fantastic work :o :o
-
Thanks again folks!
yeah well not all the minis from the game are great ;)
LOL, so true, but fortunately it all depends on personal taste! lol
I am going to use 2 stand-in minis for the Halfling sniper brothers.
-
I quite like them but I have barefeets in space.
But when I was talking with my friends we could all agree that Missionary and Rogue Trader are great but we were very split with the rest. Seme people love halfings some despised them. Same with Kroot, Eldar and Robot thingy.
I am Kroot man but the Eldar gal was more popular :>
Your Rogue Trader is perfect match for GW miniature stand in.. like they were paying homage to this model :P
-
Yeah, the Blackstone Fortress heroes seem to be especially polarizing. I'm with AWu on the Kroot being good, and the Eldar is the only one I dislike to the point I may proxy or significantly rework her - the pose is just terrible IMO.
Agis' painting is marvelous, as always.
-
Excellent idea on the mkII backpacks and alternate helms for the CSM. They look much better. I have been removing all the spikey bit from the traitor guard. I like the red UR-025, further “blending” in with the Mechanicus.

Fantastic painting as always. I was tempted by BF. But I’ve got so much on the go at the moment. More than I’ll get games with.
-
Thanks all!

I have read that too, personally I like most minis and I really LIKE the Eldar sniper sculpt. I just painted her in Ulthwe colour and will post her tonight/tomorrow.
What is really BAD about the mini is the scalecreep, she is WAY too big... but as you said, just proxy her if you are not comfortable with her and all is fine.
...I was tempted by BF. But I’ve got so much on the go at the moment. More than I’ll get games with.
We all know the feeling, or?
For me it is ASoIaF, SMOG, Titanicus, Necromunda, Kill Team, WHQ Blackstone Fortress and all my personal side quests...
Sigh! :)
-
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/Amallyn_Shadowguide.jpg)
Amallyn Shadowguide, the Eldar Ranger! Since I got a big Ulthwe army I changed the craftworld colours.
Many dislike the sculpt, I really really like her.
The only downer is the size, absolute scale creep as you can see below!!!
more on my site: http://www.adpublishing.de/html/blackstone_fortress.html
-
More nice painting. I kinda like the sculpt, but hadn't noticed the scale creep before, which is, indeed, annoying. The Kroot is enormous as well, I don't know enough about their fluff to know whether that's reasonable with the fluff or not though.
I also like the new helmets and backpacks on the Chaos Marines, I'll probably steal that idea in due course.
-
Eldar really is growing on me when she is not looking like christmas tree..
I think you made her much more setting blend in than Eavy Metal painter..
-
That's a nice Eldar ranger very well painted but the scale creep is ridiculous. I guess if you use her as a character model rather than as a member of a unit its passable. Maybe Amallyn translates as "very tall" in the Eldar tongue :P
-
Great cats, that mini's absurdly overscaled. Must be a Primaris Eldar, eh? :\
-
Another angle:
And here comes the Spindle Drones:
I aimed for an ancient look.
-
All great as usual but I really like those drones.
As as aside: I'm glad I picked up Blackstone Fortress. I like the idea of co-op games. Problem is, there are 7 of us weekly regulars now so I guess I need two copies?
-
Plus, she's standing on her tippy-toes, which probably doesn't help as far as her height is concerned...
I think it's a lovely sculpt, though, and the paint-job is beautiful, Agis! Neither the game nor the miniature range has been on my radar, but I might have to take a closer look after seeing the work you've done on them!
-
Great cats, that mini's absurdly overscaled. Must be a Primaris Eldar, eh? :\
Maybe she's just a tall gal, it does happen!
Love the Spindle Drones! Inspired!
-
Love the Spindle Drones! Inspired!
Seconded - very Dwemer. Will be stealing that.
-
Nice work on the Spindle Drones. I also went with a metallic colour. Not a fan of the minis (way too demure/tiny/fragile) but that's an issue I have with several models in the box. I was on a roll painting them and then stopped...we haven't run the game in a bit.
-

Strange - I really like the drones, very unique alien design, but I have to agree very fragile...
-
I just finished assembling the minis. What a chore! The mold lines are an absolute nightmare, because they're hard to see at places, and still you want to get them off... I think they've tried to be cunning and hide them a bit, but still. Probably so that people might skip this phase altogether? But each mini can have as many as five parts, there's so many more mold lines to scrape off!
Plus although I like the minis per se, they're are far too fiddly, things gonna snap off... And painting is more difficult since there's so many more hard to get nooks and crannies.
I think weakest of the bunch are the beastmen. Even though they're multipart minis, they end up looking something like bulky single part plastic cast from the 90ies. Plus their details are a bit shallow too.
But I will keep on following your thread so I can get some inspiration for painting, Agis. ;)
-
Seconded - very Dwemer. Will be stealing that.
Totally agree
Really horribly brilliant paintjobs that make me cry tears of frustration.
Especially like the sons of Horus scheme on the CSM.
excellent work as always. Makes me hate you more ;)

You are ALL welcome! :)
Kroot hero and Negavolt cultists soon!
-
And as promised more WHQ BF minis!
Dahyak Grekh, the Kroot tracker. Again a big mini, but not as big compared to other Kroot as Amallyn Shadowguide. See him below together with a old conversion and a hound.
My first Negavolt Cultist, I converted him slightly, since I did no like the heads cables pointing forward so much. IMO it takes a lot of the forward motion from the mini.

-
So cool!
-
Some more very nice painting there; I may well use these as inspiration when I get round to painting mine.
-
Nice :). I really like the kroot mini, pick of the box for me, might hunt it down on ebay just to paint it.
-
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/Ur-Ghul_1.jpg)
Painted the 4 Ur-Ghuls and the failcast Dark Eldar Ur-Ghul.
In comparison to the new BF plastic the old resin mini is really dated…
;)
And the remaining Negavolt Cultist are done, so far the most complex and time consuming paintjob, but I really like the result.
as almost, more on my site: http://www.adpublishing.de/html/blackstone_fortress.html

Gah! It's wonderful! :-* :-*
-
your stuff is so good!
-
Love the ur ghuls!
-
Lovely work on everything so far!
:-* :-*
You got me looking at these figures and I have already picked up the Halfings-in-Space to convert, but now you have me looking at the electro boys and the Kroot as well.........
::) ;)
-
Thanks folks!

Cool stuff. I bought some of the Negavolt Cultists of eBay with the idea to use them as the basis for some Arco-flagellant conversions. They do look better with the head cables cut off.
-
Negavolt cultists are great. I'm definitely stealing the idea of repositioning their cables.
-
Very nice.
-
Wonderfully painted! I really like the definitely-not-a-robot's paint scheme, and that cat!
-

LOL, same thought here, I was tempted to get another set, in the end I said no since I hope for a dedicated release this year together with the plastic SoB.
-
Ohmy... your Kroot tracker is going to be the painting reference for my Kroots. :-*
-
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/Traitor_Guard_1.jpg)
I started the Traitor Guard.
Good minis but IMO too big spikes, consequently I cut them a bit down...
;)

You keep on impressing us!
-
I have always avoided space marines and robots as I’m not sure how to paint armour without huge highlighting but Agis does it looking natural with apparent minimal highlights. Will have to study the pics...
-
Very nice... I like that red armour.
-
They are very good.
Again...
-
Yes yes they are very nice, now leave us alone you needy git!
Those guardsmen look fantastic, I might have to dig mine out to make a start.
They will be drafted in as grenadiers for my 30K cultist army
-
And the rest of the 1st TG squad, again slightly de-horned.

Great work on the guard!
-
So cool.
Would love to see some newly designed Imperial Guard (what's this Astra Militarum everyone is talking about?) when I see these!
-
Some rather splendid painting as always. I like the slight de-spiking they've undergone.
(When I get around to painting mine, I might use substitutes for the duplicate 7; given that the fluff says they come from a variety of regts, I won't need to worry about them looking too cohesive.)
-
Nicely done, as usual. :)
-
Wow. I really like your take on the BF miniatures! Both when it comes to your conversions and choice of colour. Look forward to see what you’ll come up with for the halflings replacement.
-
Fantastic looking traitor guard! With the reduced spikiness they seem to be more recently turned to the call of chaos. Well done!
-
Some excellent painting there!
-
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/Terrain_Marker_set.jpg)
An after market terrain piece, 3D print with as many print line as it gets, but somehow it fits the Blackstone look. I just primed it black and gave it some drybrushes.

Dammit, these are great!! :o

Great paintjob!
These remind me of all the unpainted Grymn hiding in my vault...

I painted my Grimm in a similar color scheme.

Excellent pj on this Ranger ( and the rest, of course ).
I don't mind this kind of scale creep as much, since she would make excellent commander/squad leader for the older, smaller models. The Primaris Marines, on the other hand, are a bit too much for my liking. But as you said, a matter of taste ;).

To be honest I do not even like the ladies ;) (big hairy feets etc are not my thing), I was tempted to use a pair of Imperial Guardswomen...
