Title: OGAM 28mm Maori/Polynesian Project
Post by: nervisfr on December 30, 2018, 11:23:17 AM
A new year is coming , and a new project too. :?

Ok, i know, i didn't need a new one to add to my wish list's Projects  lol lol

But, with the help of agentbalzac and his friend Neil, I decide to rush in this new Project. Neil give me is OGAM list and researches that were very usefull to see where i'm going. He save me a lot of time .

As i'll use some stock from my leads mountain, this army will be a little, if any, original  ;) and cheap.

You won't see any maori warrior figurines in this army because i haven't any in stock, so i 'll use for the warriors, my Foundry Dark Africa as base for the converting work.
Yes, you read it right. African warriors as Maori ones  :-*
With some work of course.
The Gods and the Legends will be mainly provide by Reaper Bones. i have some idea of good figurines in their range to be use for this OGAM Project  ;D

As my first tests are very concluding, i'll drop you some pictures during the WIP.

first test, with tongue out, of course :

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tPXB0OmLzh8/XCipiV7fq1I/AAAAAAAABmA/vn5QV3YAQtAYeSUTlvoGaF4lQQDzgCOwgCLcBGAs/s640/28mm%2BFoundry%2BDark%2BAfrica%2Bconversion%2BMaori%2BWarrior%2B2a.jpg)

Hope you will like them.

cheers
Eric

A worthwhile project and it will be fascinating to watch it unfold. Pacific wars in general (Samoan, Tongan, Solomon Islands and Fiji) is definitely a market all but completely untouched. Keep us posted.

Looking good so far Eric, I am keen to see my OGaM Maori vision enhanced by someone else.

I hope these test figures are Hero's/Legends and not a normal warrior (Toa),Most Maori  would normally carry a short close combat weapon or a long one not both. I think Hero's/Legends can be excused.

Cheers Neil

Not completely untouched Unlucky General as Eureka miniatures have a Maori range under their Tribal banner. Apparently they are also about to re-release the Hawaiians as the sculpts were starting to show their age. http://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_866&sort=3a (http://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_866&sort=3a)

I love the conversions so far Nervisfr, look forward to seeing more.

Thank you guys !

Neil, thank you for your precisions.
I have in mind to create a lightly (visual) difference between Elite and Normal Warrior. May be with the use of 2 weapons for the Elites and  1 weapon for the normal warriors   ;).
You should propose to Ganesha Games to produce your list on their web site , like the Inca, Pre-Islamic Arabian and Japanse ones.

i actually working on Ruaumoko, god of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and seasons...with a little idea for represente him as emerging from earth throught a lava bed.
i'll add him a new trait from the Celtic supplement : Mountain Maker for the combine effect of Earthquakes and volcanoes irruption. :D

The base of this god 'll be from this Reaper stone Giant :

because he get the pose i wanted and he was in my stock at the moment  ;D

a rock, made from garden cork, is added in his left hand  ;)

Nice work Eric. I have recently got the same figure and am planning to use him for Whiro lord of Darkness.

Good idea for defining the elites and normal warriors.

I will look into the Ganesha Games idea

Thank you Neil.

The lava bed is complete and the paint work nearly finished too.

The God is a test about a small electrical handiwork with Leds for the lava bed  ;) to make it more impressive when he surface from earth !

I had modified his stats slightly since I sent you the list by adding Tremble before my might. I have not seen the Celtic supplement. I must try and track it down.

i'm thinking about to add a new character like a stone/Earth elemental or Golem  :P but more like a corail (or reef) golem from Reaper Bones.

like that

but scratchbuild like my stone/earth elemental , that's mean for cheap  ;)

I do like the Coral Golem and did consider it. Sadly New Zealand does not have any large scale coral reefs. It would be more suited to many other of the pacific island cultures which have very similar beliefs.
It could be used as a stand alone figure or perhaps a Taniwha.

As my goal is a Maori/Polynesian like Oceania OGAM army it could be a good add to my list, may be not as corail creature but an Ocean/seabed elemental..
Only an excuse for me to create one like that .... lol lol lol

Occasionally a single figure is enough to tempt me into a new project. That coral elemental falls into that category. Lordy, he's beautiful! Anyone know how big he is?

And Polynesia does have a lot of untapped potential for gaming: unique cultures, gorgeous, dramatic terrain, the chance to model lava and catamarans, along with the excuse to scatter numbers of tikis about the board...What's not to like? If one really wanted to go whole hog, think of the food and drinks (!!!) that could be served alongside any game. Yes, it is attractive.

Wasn't there a company doing a kickstarter for a Polynesian fantasy range? A quick Google search didn't turn anything up so maybe it didn't happen.

Fun project, Nervisfr. I'll follow your progress with interest!

Hope i won't disappoint you   o_o

here is the comparison scale with a 28mm/30 Bones reaper figurine

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/013/207/310/796c81f7e80085780fb63fb056f9f8ef_original.jpg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&w=639&fit=max&v=1469742987&auto=format&gif-q=50&q=92&s=466357195d13c2550759044575f7c2dc)

And as you, Arundel,  i can do an army only for one or two characters or ideas of conversion for some kind of troops....

For OGAM, i have ideas for Inuit, Hebrew (but for the monotheist's culture, the choice is limited for the God  lol lol lol), Conan, etc.....

cheers
Eric

If it also had Mayan & Pacific Northwestern Native Americans, then I think it was Paymaster Games. They have a US eBay store and I think a stockist comes up if you google them.

I backed a couple of Paymaster Kickstarters and own a box of their high-quality figures. Here is a link to their Ebay store and their current catalog:

https://www.ebay.com/str/paymastergames?fbclid=IwAR1b1pLaQ06NqQO2FlaEaiwjAyMN8Z_FbLr9GOOHsxBhB8cKUB2q6PqIqnE

From this link and from posts on Paymaster's Facebook page, I gather that many items that were produced for Kickstarters have gone OOP. What you see on Ebay is what you can order now. I see several sets of Hawaiian warriors, a toothy humanoid giant, a giant anthropomorphic gecko and a giant clam currently in production for Hawaiian subjects.

I gotta say, the sets of Northwest Pacific Coast Indian warriors that I received are highly multi-part for white metal castings. I think the Hawaiian warriors are the same. I got heads, torsos, separate arms, and a hip-leg unit. The design calls for a lot of drilling, pinning and gluing. There are some detail differences among the heads and torsos, and you can vary the poses to some degree, although there's only one angle of join that makes the torsos line up with the hips. I thought it was a lot of work for the result I wanted. The standard of modeling among LAF members is high, so maybe these Paymaster figure kits are just what you want to work with.

Um...there's a post on the Paymaster Facebook page from November 4, stating that Marc would be taking pre-orders for product from his most recently funded Kickstarter for *two days*, with a link to his 'pre-order store'. Some tasty stuff listed there, including Polynesian and Maori items not on the Ebay store. Might be worth exploring and IMing Marc, if you like the miniatures:

Thank you zippyfusenet for the informations about this range.

 ;)

As a collateral effect of this topic, i have started a new project for the......... Amazonian !  o_o o_o o_o
i have already for action a lot of painted Tupi warriors (Coppelstone ones) so i need only to create/find one God and some fun Legends.
So i have started tracking which ones could interest me. Like Mapinguari (a conversion is nearly finished), Lobisomem, etc....
i'm working too on an OGAM list to go with it.

a busy year is coming, i think  :?

1- Hot glue to give thickness.
2- then "No screws-No nails" Pattex glue, for designing hair (found in an Action store

excellent and easy way

Some problems with figure conversion are:
The limbs of the new model to have a natural posture
The cuts and joints of various add-ons and the original figure to be smoothed and invisible
To be convincing for the conversion it is purposed.

I think that you have tackled all these problems with great success!

If you had not shown the prototype, one would be sure that this was an original!

Thank you guys, ;) :D

For the Golem, the problem is adding the coral, sea plants and some details to give him the look of the Reaper's one.
i have to sculpt some of these "accessories".
One of his victim is already on the paint desk  ;D
May be a new one, placed under his left foot (the one on the beach sand. The other foot 'll be in the water).
the left hand holding the 1st victim and the right relying on a rock...

I've just been reading your thread and its is a great project. Here in NZ we used to have a giant eagle (called Pouakai or Haasts eagle) which may be a good addition. I've seen a life sized replica and its a big bird.

More details here

and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haast%27s_eagle

Also the Moa was a very large flightless in NZ.

Just being a little pedantic here, but there were several varieties of Moa, ranging from about three foot tall up the giant shown here. start of the work on the giant Crab......

as they are flat (like most of kind of products), you'll need to build a special base to make them stand up on their base (et on legs of course)  ;)

they'll be better and more alive like that. lol lol

Thank you FreakyFenton,

The crabs are at the painting step but i do it in two parts.
1st : under the crab then base the crab
2st paint the top of the crab.

As they are near the ground level it's easier  ;)

Thank you Bullshott.
The crabs are on the paint desk, for testing colors and basing.
I think, it'll be easier to base and paint the base before gluing the crabs.  o_o o_o
Some are too low on theirs legs because the body is too heavy for the plastic legs to support it.  ;)

Thank guys.

a new shot to see the base made from a strong paper clip featurig the manta's tail.

The shaman is pin in the manta's back (hard plastic) and the paper clip into the rear  >:D and curve at the end to give a base to the animal .

The shaman'staff is also pin in the back to give a second attachment point for the figurine

 ;)

Just to throw an idea, but of course, you are the creator and re-animator! (Cheers!)
You have found this so beautiful video showing the mantas flying completely out of the water.
You may have noticed the moment the tail is out of the water, leaving a strong water trail.
My idea is to use part of the paper clip for the manta's tail and part of it covered with elaborated silicone to represent the water trail.
We have the same idea perhaps?  :P

This is the idea, my friend  ;)

but i have to see several manta's video before starting the water effect.
Hot glue gun could be a part of the solution for water.....see my waterfall terrain

Thank you DintheDin.
all trees are home made.

the great palm trees are made form BBQ stick with string wrapped on it and plastic foliage from cake's palmtrees decoration.
The small one in the foreground is a small pine cone with plastic plants as foliage. ;)
All the plants are a mix of plastic plants.

All very well done and inspiring! (The pine cone I suspected  ;) )
Also well arranged and they give a representative picture. Congrats!

As requested by DintheDin, the water effect is in progress :

1 step :  the water

* Done with a plastic translucent sheet (for book cover).
* Shaped as require on the ray's wings.
* Stripped with glue gun on each face.

2nd step
* Glueing of  the water effect on the wings.

* Cut out some parts of the water tail to fit the water effect on the base.

3nd step :
* Go to prepare the base  ;)

Pictures are coming as soon as possible  ;D

first step for water

 paint the textured base!

2nd Step - Add something fun to make the base more original (if it's possible)

Add a shark shade on the base. Draw with an ikea lead pencil

3nd Step - Coat the base ;

Add the waves and sea relief....with hot glue gun  :D

The "water trail" is keep off the base during the operation. More easier to handle the glue gun without obstacles  ;)

4th step - Prepare the "water splash" ;

The "water splash" are made from a plastic bottle shaped into flame alike then coated with hot glue.
the hot glue will change the shapes under heat effect. The "splash" will get a more natural look then .

5th step - Add water effect to the base

Glue the "water trail" to the base and add the "water splash".

 o_o o_o

It is exciting to watch your imagination when put in motion!
The plastic bottle "water splash" is inspiring, but the touch of the shark shadow is super!
Good continuation!!!

here is the shark but i'm not very happy with the final result.

The shade must be darker to be seen under "water".
I have painted the shade with some light and dark grey as for a true shark, but with the thickness of glue, the color seems faded and the shark is nearly invisible under the waves, even with the shark fin...

here a close up :

Anyway i  :-* :-* :-* the final result !

i think the goal will be achieved ......in a few hours. ;D

Cheers
Eric
